When I lived in my hometown after Japan I started playing guitar at our church, which was a pretty small one, and over time it became smaller and also less healthy, consequence being I became more involved (lack of volunteers) and by the end had started arranging services and music with my wife

This being exhausting, when we moved to do my PhD we decided to go to a big church were we could blend in and be anonymous (mission accomplished) but when I got back from London last year my wife began to insist that I start playing guitar again. This church was big enough that I had to go through a rather elaborate audition process but in the end I fooled them and they plugged me in and now I play about once a month.

It is a big church, they do things differently, I don't like all of the differences, but the surreal thing I have encountered is that they put me on "lead" guitar pretty nearly exclusively. Most of the time I am playing with another guitar player who is also singing, consequence being he plays less and usually defers to me. In all my musical existence I have never been the guitar player to whom is deferred, I usually get out of the way of other people

I say all this to say, that the sonic liberty of my last two musical positions--less so at my previous church, which had less interest in electric guitar--has meant that I've had to get a lot better at improvisation and also learning parts by ear, as the chord sheets are not especially useful, and there is no sheet music, and no tablature. The best I get is sometimes a hipster worship guitar player will make a youtube video "tutorial" that consists of him playing the guitar in front of you and you kind of intuit based on his hand position and your knowledge of what strings and frets make what sounds to piece together what he's doing

What is the point I am making

A little while ago I shared a video of a man talking about how you "fake" playing piano and then he proceeded to explain how you actually play piano, because if you know what "buttons to push" (in his case, if you know how to play a C major scale) you can push whatever ones you want

I've been kind of amazed at the extent to which, true enough, the whole thing is a confidence trick. In Western music there are twelve different notes total. Just about every piece of Western music you've ever heard since the monks figured out the circle of fifths in the middle ages has consisted of some combination of those twelve. A major scale has seven notes.

You just have to push those seven buttons. And even if you push one of the other five, if you do it with enough confidence, people will just think that you made a bold, if confusing, choice to introduce dissonance.

Was looking at refs and since Viktor has two different leg braces I was wondering, do we think he wears them simultaneously?? The refs don't perfectly line up perspective-wise so it's hard to tell but parts of the one he wears during the Hexcore scenes look like they could maybe line up with the brace that he wears over his clothes, but also some parts really don't and look like they'd be super uncomfy. Also HOW does he take these on and off. Experts weigh in

as much as I get why lucanis is positioned as the one needed to kill ghilan'nain as the mage killer etc, I can't help but feel like it should've been davrin

like. there's something about the dalish elf with andruil's vallaslin, a grey warden, a monster hunter, hunting down the mother of all monsters, who creates monstrosities with the blight, who was once andruil's beloved.

ghilan'nain created the halla. she still cares for the halla, despite what she's become, despite being unable to create them anymore. davrin cared for the halla under his uncle's tutelage. assan cares for and nurses a sick and dying halla. assan, who's name means arrow in elven, when andruil's weapon was a bow, who's hunting instincts give way to something more protective.

davrin was taught the way of the three trees. it was created by andruil. andruil, the goddess of the hunt, also known as the goddess of sacrifice. davrin feels like a weapon sharpened to make that final sacrifice against the blight, a tool that once drove andruil mad, and has twisted ghilan'nain into something unrecognisable. andruil, blood and force, who loved a mortal for her creations and raised her to godhood.

would ghilan'nain see andruil in him? would that offer something more to her character than just oh she's evil?

the dalish tell a legend of ghilan'nain and a hunter who bested her. maybe it was a prophecy instead.

one of the Batfamily's protocols for someone going suddenly evil actually is what they jokingly call a percussive reset (slamming the evil person's head into the wall just hard enough to scramble any potential mind control but not enough to cause serious brain damage) and Bruce absolutely hates that they call it that. does that stop him from doing it? absolutely not, but he tends to default to throwing an explosive device close to the evil person's head instead (make that brain jiggle like Jell-o) and plays it off as a "distraction." this is step 6 on his potential mind control protocol/checklist, immediately preceding step 7 (calling Diana) and step 8 ("this isn't you, don't do this").
