Thoughts regarding the Scifos

i felt like gathering some ideas that ive had and discussed with people in the past, combining them with what we have available from the novel translations of dnk. it'll be under cut for if you havent read the novels yet and/or havent finished tov.

this goes without saying, but obviously since this is all found within side content and not in the game directly, this doesnt mean its 100% canon. its only canon to a person if they choose to believe it!

also. this is all speculative so do keep that in mind!

but i want to take note of how much flynn's parents' influence (in the brief time they've spent with flynn) could be felt on him. obviously, this wont be an ideal look at it, as writing and ideas about flynn's parents wasn't a thing in the game, and instead started with the first strike movie (unfortunately, some plot points contradict with things within the game. this is not the post to talk about that though). flynns past is explored further in the novels, which released around 2015/2016

firstly, it would be good to try gather whatever confirmed info there is on flynn's father. flynn's father in dnk doesnt even have a name attached to him! but i decided to stick with the name we get in first strike: finath scifo. for starters, let's stick with only the information from the novels.

it's heavily implied that the scifos all come from the citizen's/public quarter. finath's death was enough of a blow to norein and flynn that they needed to part with their former lives and move to the lower quarter. with how sickly norein is shown to be, it becomes apparent to me that finath was the sole breadwinner of the family. you could argue that he probably wasnt a very important position of a knight too, since becoming a captain is pretty hard. (flynn is the spiders georg of knight promotions) hence, finath probably wasnt even that rich (but still doing fine when compared to the lower quarter residents). if he didnt earn much to begin with, then it would make sense why norein had to resort to selling most of her and flynns possessions and move out.

as to how he must have been as a person... clearly, his own sense of justice affected norein enough for her to wish to follow the same principles, even if it meant her death. the question i want to pose though, how much of his sense of justice can we infer? was he actually against people stealing? how much of his worldview has influenced flynn in the novels?

with how flynn seems to act about the dark wings in the novels, its possible to say yes, finath was against stealing. but even then, i cant find myself saying this with complete certainty. this is because norein makes the choice to not drink the panacea, and it's already been years since finath's death. i feel her memory of finath and the choices she makes must have been motivated by her own mental state, too, besides finath's morals.

when it comes to flynn, finath actually started teaching his son swordsmanship before age 7. historically speaking, trainings for knights in noble families started from age 7, when the child is considered a page, whose job became to serve the senior knight, as well as learning swordsmanship. with flynn even having a book on techniques that he continues learning diligently from, its apparent that finath had ambitions for flynn to follow in his footsteps. i feel i could argue this could also be part of the reason why flynn is so adamant about not besmirching techniques for the knights, and why he chides yuri about it (both in the novels and in the game). by doing the same techniques, it's like flynn is able to honor his father's death, even if knighthood itself is a sore spot for him at the time.

i also want to note the words norein uses in her posthumous letter to flynn: [source from this chapter]

You may not be able to understand the choice he made, or the choice I made, right now. I’m sorry for not being able to stay by your side until you did. Even so, I still hope that you will understand one day.

(emphasis in bold by me)

once again, it all comes back to choices and living (or dying) by them, a central theme of vesperia!

the wording here is fascinating, as we never quite get an explanation as to how finath died in the novels.

but ultimately, it was still a choice he made that lead to his death. norein probably knows how finath must have perished. does flynn? with how dodgy he is on the topic, it could be argued for either way. in my opinion, with how the novels follows flynn's perspective sometimes, it doesnt seem that bit in particular turmoils flynn. it makes me think he is probably aware of how finath died, but simply hasnt been able to fully come to terms with it (much like how he later struggles understanding norein's choice to not drink the panacea)

i feel like such an honesty on how and why both his parents died is a double-edged sword for flynn. while he is able to know the truth, it also makes him close off with his thoughts at his lowest. granted, this isnt fully visible in game, but id argue its one of the possible reasons he spends so much time coming to terms with different things and ruminates about it even when in the party (such as yuri's killings). in fact, in-game, he takes alexei's betrayal pretty badly, still wishing he could understand why alexei made this choice even in the latter's boss fight, much to yuris surprise!

let's move on to norein for now. we know she is sickly, and it's clear that she hasnt been the same since moving to the lower quarter. flynn tends to her on many days, and she requires his help on many things even as he is young. she's made the hat for flynn in the past, but you never find her making anything similar again. if she had any particular interests and passions, finath's death took them with him.

it's when she is able to teach the lower quarter how to read that she briefly regains a spark of life, and a purpose to do something. and when she is hit with the (presumably aer-related) sickness, she sinks back to how she'd been. she refuses the panacea from jiri, because it meant going against finath's ideals, and chose to die.

it's easy to infer that she was an incredibly depressed woman. and when she was hit with such a deadly sickness, i think she was simply waiting to die from it. obviously, it's a painful and a pretty terrible choice to have, especially as she does ultimately leave her son all alone. on the other hand, she believes flynn wouldnt be alone in the community of the lower quarter. its hard to completely rationalize her choice, as it all seems motivated by her own mental state. such as the fact she may also display some form of self-deprecation? how low would one have to be doing to think their child will be ultimately alright after their death?

what does all of this say about flynn later on? you see this as soon as chapter one of the novel. he doesnt wish to be a trouble for, or have his negative feelings be known by his mother. he puts on a smile, and isnt entirely honest with her when the other boys pestered him. he goes for the river escapade for his mother's health's sake, and not for any other known reason.

even when she dies, flynn is never able to get out of that behavior. as is noted in the last chapter for part 2, it's like he had no desire for anything. this was said about him not spending money, but this line seems to ring true about flynn throughout the novel. this is obviously due to the grief he's been dealing with, but it's also indicative of something flynn struggles in the future too. he is never able to be a very selfish person. arguably, when he expresses selfishness, it actually ends up causing some things to go differently (such as when he insists going with the party to baction rather than lead his brigade up until the heracles scenes) (or how, arguably, his own insistence to learn knight techniques evolved into norein willingly teaching literacy to the lower quarter residents)

especially in his position as a knight, taking any time as distraction even to speak to yuri for a bit costs him valuable time. this is already an issue when you become a captain of the knights, but its even further amplified when its an issue flynns been dealing with since childhood.

but when it comes to it, it seems to me that there have been some vague attempts for flynn to stop concerning himself with knighthood, from noreins end. i dont mean it in a "she was against it", but in a "she didnt encourage him" way. for one, flynn didnt have his first sword back for quite some time, until chapter 3 of part 1 in the novels when he and yuri bought it back. so he wasnt able to train with a sword by looking at his manual. and yet, the manual was the single thing flynn had left of knighthood and of his father.

finally, i want to invoke the reason the first strike movie gives for finath's death, and how it may have affected norein and flynn.

(this is incredibly speculative)

the movie says finath "disobeyed orders". for a knight who seems to have had astrong g sense of justice that affected both norein and flynns sense of right and wrong, it makes one wonder:

a) was he truly uptight about morals, and made an exception that resulted in him dying?

b) or was he more lax with strictness, but thebreader is getting a warped sense of his views through norein in the novels? a more back or white reading of his views, as opposed to nuance?

when norein declined the panacea, was that her way of affirming finath's morals when he didnt at his death? was the memory his family has of him sculpted into an ideal, rather than remain that of a person they knew?

we dont even know his name in the novels.

when looking back to the game, flynn is textually treated as the shining light of the imperial knights, and the light to yuris dark. yuri also has, by act 3, put him on a pedestal, undermining the equal standing they otherwise are shown to have in game. because yuri thinks too little of himself as a person, and thinks flynn of more than simply the person he calls his best friend.

and ironically enough, flynn in his youth makes the choice of sticking to knighthood, and ultimately, sticking to his beliefs. in the future, its a path where he has to numb down most of his desires for the sake of following his principles. he unknowingly may have made the choice of sacrificing his selfishness.

for his beliefs, finath had made a choice that resulted in the separation from his family. for her beliefs, norein forgot all that she had to live for, and gave up.

is it for a similar reason that flynn doesnt protest his commandant position? (there are hints that the commandant position broke alexei, after all)

...here is a final thought to chew on in regards to finath. stage play spoiler. its in rot13 cypher:

The Old Guard comics are good at adding some extra depth to the characters. Of course im most interested in Joe and Nicky.. but like theres a lot good there.

Like Nicky is pretty scorched-earth and unhinged... Hes pretended to be a wounded confederate soldier to earn the trust of random troops to slaughter them (all the while lamenting he couldnt be with Joe who was obviously back where it was safe to take care of people... due to him being very visibly a target in this time.

sidenote- this was the first it really sunk in about Joe for a while being the only obviously not white member of the group and thus being more of a target on their jobs. Like the Nazi chapter was shown first but I guess I was more distracted by Joes sweet, romantic heart than the implications of a North African man being in Nazi Germany which I guess is dumb...)

Or going around to kill every one tangentially involved(?) with some guy killing some gay kids, in particular the cop who didnt follow up on a lead because it was too cold to bother for 'some fairies'... (This story was super interesting seeing Nicky and Joe kinda fighting about it. Or rather Nickys in the dog house for being kind of unhinged while Joe was sad sitting at a bar with Andy waiting for him to call. (Booker was there like 'My OTP is fighting... ???' its actually pretty funny seeing Booker try to get Nicky to call Joe he even suggests Nicky lie about what theyre doing which Nicky says he'd never lie to Joe which is very cute. Then eventually saying he'd take care of the rest of Nickys list and he should just go back to Joe. )

The Nazi one was interesting too. It shows that Joe can be just as unhinged doling out justice but more so when its like... direct. Joe was mad he was sitting in a club that a Nazi was chilling at and Nicky for once was like... 'Cant we have one night of peace?' but then the Nazi comes over to mock them and says Joe was 'a dog' and THEN Nicky gets pissed.

Nicky especially from that one with the cop feels like he doesnt DO forgiveness... which is a bold position to take for a Templar Knight from the Crusades...

Where as Joe is more... take out the source of evil and thats enough. He doesnt want more death. Might be why he looked so upset killing Keane in the movie.

this is the one time i will address a reply, since i am seeing a lot of this coming up in my notes and do want to clarify that i agree w you wholeheartedly and i NEVER made any claim that i was happy with the ending or that gaining his sight back served the story any justice.

i would go more into how irked i was with some of the takes and how they put other people in the disability spectrum down, but ppl have done a better job of conveying my exact thoughts/criticisms in the tags already so i'll direct everyone's attention below

#okay i had mashed potatoes and now i'm back and i want to make this the first post i reblog about it#because it's such an important perspective to keep in mind when phrasing analysis/rants/disappointments with the choice made with the endin#states of ability come and go across people's life times#and nobody has the right to diminish those experiences or dictate how people manage/treat their bodily challenges.#it *is* a nuanced conversation in disability spaces#it *is* a nuanced thing which is rarely considered in disability policies in larger systems#that said - and i can only ever give my own opinion with the consideration of other perspectives - last twilight did not tell that story#and to say it did feels like an incredibly generous-hearted read. and maybe i'm just too jaded to read this text that way but#15 minutes at the end of 12 weeks. with the tone of a dcom pairing the spares that look inconveniently gay.#as a tidy bow or cherry on top to complete a state of happiness#or the only way to fulfil on the message of hope. it was slapdash and insulting#and if the people involved wanted me to read that as a nuanced subject treatment then they had a lot further to go before they earned it#but again: that's just my opinion#and i will not be villifying people who do identify with day's recovery trajectory because that's fucking real#but as a story? in execution? for the permanently disabled AND the temporarily/episodically disabled? this was a failure to me#and i feel like i've been made a fool of by a creator i respected (if did not totally trust)#he bit off more than he could chew and i won't be swallowing it unfortunately#last twilight (via @icouldhyperfixatehim)

tl;dr we are on the same page, it's all good.

i don't want to go into too much detail about my life and how i connected to LT, but just know i am not entirely comfortable with what i am seeing on my dash. a few years ago circumstances lead to me losing my hearing for majority of a year and then became hard hearing for a period of time before i regained my hearing back. its not fully where it used to be but that loss, that hope, and what you take with you on the other side stays with you long after the recovery. i know because i see it every time my mom is in remission.

and then a few months ago, i got a concussion which lead to me being momentarily unable to walk without an caregiver/walker/cane. i worked hard on my PT and now am able to manage on my own two feet again as of three weeks ago.

all i am saying is sure hating on part 4 is your opinion and might not be for you but there are people in your life and maybe on your dash that are reading what you think about people who were disabled at a time of their life, are on their way to recovery now, or got the treatment they've been waiting for. the hardships, the journey, even all the good that happened during allllll that still matters after recovery.

[ 🧱 ] how would you describe your muses’ morality? what are their core values?

((Qrow's morals are very, very grey. Overall, I'd say that he's very humanist in his beliefs: overall, humanity is good, and has the potential to do good and great things. He wants people to be able to live happy and healthy lives without the Grimm or Salem hanging over their heads. Politically and economically, Qrow is egalitarian, and believes those in positions of power have to earn that spot and continue to prove that they're fit for the job. Wealth and property mean nothing to him, and honestly, if you're stockpiling either for the purpose of just having it, dont come crying when someone steals it so they can feed their family.

Qrow is not naïve. He knows that law is not the same thing as justice, and that sometimes, bad things have to happen. There is no such thing as all good, and the only thing in this world that is all bad is Salem. He's not above doing things like murder in order to protect the community. I wouldnt say he's altruistic entirely either, because Qrow has also been known to take things just because "I want it".

Internally, Qrow views his moral center as this: "I bring pain into the world by dint of my semblance. If Misfortune is a curse on everyone, my actions need to counterbalance that by making the world better. Maybe it'll even out the scales." To day, Qrow has never managed to mentally balance those scales, and probably never will.

All in all, he's got a very complex moral code, and because of it Qrow is very glad he's never got to be the one to make decisions. He has a feeling his decisions are going to rankle some.

[ 💛 ] how empathetic is your muse? how compassionate are they? is this something people expect from them, or are people surprised when they find out how compassionate or empathetic they actually are?

Qrow is extremely empathetic and compassionate, and this does catch people off guard because of his very caustic personality. It also seems odd because Qrow doesnt show vulnerability often, and in some regards in order to show compassion you do sometimes need to show that vulnerability.

But Qrow wouldnt be able to do the job of a Huntsman without it. As a Hunter, you're looking out for people who look to you for stability and safety. They're looking for comfort. And standoffishness, or ego, or cold professionalism is not comforting. A uniform also isnt comforting, but thats for a different day.

I am not over it. I am SO not over IT. I read the SNK manga YEARS ago when it was only chapter 100 and one day I had the dumb idea to continue that shit. however, yeah, i do kinda feel you :/ like the way yams keeps glossing over hange's death is actually a bit weird? like i know they're at war and i know that they have no time for grieving etc but the kids were literally bawling their eyes when hange died but no mention of her sacrifice at all after that? like in 136, gabi said that they should stop the rumbling to repay azumabito's kindness and that's ummmmmmm.... a little bit weird. sure, gabi is a little girl with no connection to hange but reiner, jean and connie were there, when gabi said that and they saw hange’s sacrifice, so why not say something like “yeah, we can’t let commander hange’s sacrifice go to waste?” like come on. what did azumabito do? let falco transform on the board of her ship, so now she travels on a boat? i don't think that can compare to hange's acts though. she literally brought these mfs who were ready to jump at each other's throat together and then she sacrificed her own life to give them yet another chance at success. a sacrifice that was proved to be utterly meaningless in the very next chapter? why did falco learn about his ability to fly only after hange died? why didn't he discover it upon first transformation? :/

oh, and speaking of hange's character arc? like i get it, she was depressed, she struggled with her role as a commander (even though she did everything she could and she did a damn good job at it). and i guess that this plotline was kinda resolved when she heard that erwin approved of her actions? and that's cool, if what we've seen was actually an afterlife and not hange's hallucination. because if it was indeed a product of her mind then that's, um, kinda depressing bro. hange was so desperate for someone's approval that she dreamed about it while literally dying. i just don't understand why yams didn't include a scene where kids tell her how much they respect her and what an honor it was to serve under her command or SOMETHING. but as it is, hange died, thinking she was weak and useless and, um, yeah, certainly not the end you want for your favorite character :)

Explain: To Meninas, the Wandenreich are a means to an end; a way for her to be placed in a position where she might exact her revenge on Soul Society for the deaths of her parents during the original Quincy genocide 1000 years prior. In addition, being recruited into the Wandenreich also puts her in a closer position to Yhwach himself, whom she firmly believes is equally responsible for the deaths of her parents due to his ineptitude as a leader and “god”. She has no loyalty to Quincy as a race, and only greater purpose is to become the Strongest of all Quincy (not even particularly the “Strongest Quincy”, as she prefers her fists over traditional Quincy techniques). She is exclusively motivated by her own personal sense of justice, and will do whatever she must to attain it.

Explain here: Soul Society is a corrupt government body that uses methods of fear, torture, and suppression to uphold their very self-serving ideals of justice. Already armed with this perception, Meninas also sees this firsthand while captive to Mayuri Kurotsuchi and must personally carry out such tactics firsthand. While she doesn’t in the fullest capacity know how to change Soul Society because the root of evil is much deeper than anyone would think, she believes that a number of practices and traditions and captains ought to be destroyed; torn out, root and stem. She also hates the nobility that control many of the policies and buy their way into the Gotei ranks. Those who fight and do the work have earned their place at the top, those who do nothing and hoard their wealth while watching those at the bottom suffer have no place in policy making, regulation, or enforcement.

Why is that?:  This goes for pretty much all locations/bases in her life after leaving her childhood home at the age of 12- she doesn’t regard anywhere as home as much as shelter. She doesn’t like Silbern, but grows used to it over time (hence the neutrality), but is miserable while trapped in Soul Society.

Share here:  She despises the class differences between the weird racist blood purity and nobility schemes of the Quincy to Nobility in any of its forms and greatly begrudges those of high noble status. While she does a good job at hiding this disdain while residing in Silbern and around large numbers of Quincy elite (in wealth and breeding), she resents most of them for what they are. Her young life was shaped by the perception of a person’s worth in the world ruled by pedigree and wealth, and she as a result that a person’s worth is dependent on how useful they are as a tool or object to others. She wants to live in a world where those currently at the bottom stand at the top, and those in power are beneath their feet. As far as plans, she’s spent her entire life living with the purpose of revenge, and acting as a tool or an object. Meninas struggles to reconcile this way of life with any dreams for living in any normal capacity.

Quill’s Swill - The Worst Of 2018

Congratulations dear reader. You survived 2018. And you know what that means. It’s time for another best of/worst of list. Welcome to Quill’s Swill 2018. A giant septic tank for the various shit the entertainment industry produced over the course of the year. The films, games, TV shows and various other media that got on my bad side. As always please bear in mind that this is only my subjective opinion (if you happen to like any of the things on this list, good for you. I’m glad someone did) and that obviously I haven’t seen everything 2018 has to offer for one reason or another. In other words, sorry that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald isn’t on here. I’m sure it is as terrible as some have been suggesting. I just never got around to watching it.

Hold The Sunset

The news that John Cleese would be returning to the world of BBC sitcoms was incredibly exciting, being a massive Fawlty Towers fan and all. Unfortunately Hold The Sunset was not quite what I had in mind. It’s one of those rare breed of situation comedies that chooses to offer no actual comedy. It’s not a sitcom. It’s a sit. Like Scrubs or The Big Bang Theory.

An elderly couple plan to elope abroad only for Alison Steadman’s son to barge in, having left his wife, and forcing them to put their plans on hold. Hence the title ‘Hold The Sunset.’ It’s like a cross between As Time Goes By and Sorry, but if all the humour and relatability were surgically removed by a deadpan mortician. The characters are weak, the plots are thin on the ground and the humour (hat little of it there is) feel incredibly dated. The middle aged mummy’s boy is something that hasn’t been funny since the 90s. It’s an utter waste of great talent and what hurts even more is that this tripe is actually getting a second series. I can only assume the people watching this are comatose. Either that or there’s an epidemic of people in Britain who have lost the remote.

Avengers: Infinity War

Yes this is one of the worst movies of 2018 and no I don’t regret saying that one little bit. Avengers: Infinity War was fucking terrible. Period. There were too many plots and characters going on, which made the film hard to follow (and what staggers me is that the so called ‘professional’ critics have condemned movies for having too many characters and plots before. Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice and even Deadpool 2. But because this is an MCU movie, it gets a free pass. Fuck off). The characterisation was weak due to sheer number of characters they try to juggle, resulting in characters coming off as one dimensional caricatures of themselves and scenes where characters such as Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Star-Lord sound completely interchangeable. The villain, Thanos, is a stupidly and poorly written villain, but that’s hardly surprising considering what a shit job Marvel have done building him up over the course of these 20+ movies. And let’s not forget that pisstake ending. A bunch of prominent Marvel characters die and it’s all very, very sad... except all these characters just so happen to have sequels planned, which makes this ending fucking pointless and have less impact than a feather on a bouncy castle.

I don’t know which is more shocking. That Marvel and Disney think their audience are that stupid and gullible, or that their audience are actually validating their view. Fuck you Disney.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

I’ve always wanted a Harry Potter RPG, where you could customise your character, choose your house and actually live a full school life at Hogwarts. This year, Warner Bros and Jam City gave us just that.

That was a mistake.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is the epitome of everything that’s wrong with the mobile gaming market right now. The gameplay is boring and involving where you just tap images on a screen until a progress bar fills up. Wizard duels are little more than rock-paper-scissors challenges that require no kind of skill. Bonding with friends and caring for magical creatures just consist of pathetically simple pop quizzes and yet more boring tapping. Oh and of course you only get a certain amount of energy to complete these tedious tasks. If you run out of energy, you wait for it to fill up... or pay up for the privilege. So determined are they to extract your hard earned cash from your wallet, there’s actually a bit where Devil’s Snare strangles your eleven year old avatar and the game effectively tries to guilt trip you into paying micro-transactions to save them. It’s sleazy, gross and manipulative. Honestly, you’re better off just playing Candy Crush.

Agony

When the developers of this game said they wanted to give the player a trip through Hell, they had no idea how true that statement really was. Agony is dreadful on a number of levels. The design for Hell itself, while visually interesting at times, is often not very practical and gets quite dull and repetitive after a while. The stealth mechanics are a joke and the AI of your demonic enemies are pitiful. All of this alone would have been enough to put this game on the list, but then we also have the casual misogyny. Agony is a gorefest trying desperately to shock the player. We see men and woman get tortured, but it’s the women that often get the extreme end. The violence inflicted on them is often sexual in nature and the game seems to go out of its way to degrade and dehumanise women at every turn. The orgasmic cries of ‘pull it out’ quickly become a staple of the game’s experience as we see naked women raped, tortured and murdered, all for the purposes of ‘entertainment.’

I would call Agony sexist, but honestly that would be giving it too much credit. Agony is like a little child trying desperately to be all dark and edgy in a pathetic attempt to impress everyone around him, and we should treat it as such. Go to your room Agony. No ice cream for you.

Peter Rabbit

If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of Beatrix Potter rotating in her grave.

Yes we have yet another live action/CGI hybrid, but instead of something innocuous like the Smurfs or Alvin and the Chipmunks, Sony instead decides to adapt Peter Rabbit, with James Corden in the title role.

It’s about as bad as you’d expect.

Their attempts to modernise the story are painful to say the least with pop culture references, inappropriate adult humour and twerking rabbits. Plus rather than the gentle, but slightly mischievous character we got in the source material, here Peter is a sociopathic delinquent who seems to revel in making the farmer’s life a living hell. He’s unlikable and unwatchable as far as I’m concerned and the film doesn’t in anyway earn the emotional moments it tries so desperately to sell to the audience. And the worst part is it’s getting a sequel.

Wait. Do you hear that sound? That’s the sound of Beatrix Potter tearing out of the ground, ready to kill whatever idiot came up with this shit.

Fallout 76

I was excited for Fallout 76. A MMORPG where players band together to rebuild society after a nuclear apocalypse. Could have been great. Pity it wasn’t.

Fallout 76 is a dreadful game. Not only is it a buggy, glitchy mess that requires a constant online connection to play, which could result in you losing hours of progress if your WiFi went down, it’s also unbelievably tedious, and that’s because there’s nothing to do in the game. There’s no other characters to interact with, the various robots and computers you come across are really little more than quest givers, there’s no actual plot so to speak, and because of the sheer size of the world and the number of players allowed on a server, the chances of you actually meeting any actual players is remote. And let’s not forget all the behind the scenes drama. Bethesda falsely advertising Fallout themed canvas bags and players getting shitty nylon ones. Bethesda accidentally releasing the account information of various players trying to get a refund for said bag. Bethesda failing to program the year 2019 into the game code, meaning that the game’s nukes don’t work.

Maybe there’s a chance that Bethesda could pull a No Man’s Sky and fix everything over the coming years with various patches and DLCs, but the damage has already been done. It’s incredibly disappointing. The Elder Scrolls 6 is going to have be fucking incredible to win everyone back.

Mama Mia!: Here We Go Again

I can’t stand jukebox musicals anyway, but Mamma Mia was always one of the worst. Its boring, meandering story with its one note, obnoxious cast of characters screeching out ABBA songs like they’re at some drunken karaoke session at some poor sod’s hen party has always grated on my nerves. So imagine my delight when they announced we were getting a sequel. Ever wondered how Meryl Streep met her three lovers and founded her hotel? No? Well tough shit, we’re going to tell you anyway.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is basically just Mamma Mia again. The actors still can’t sing, the characters are still annoying and story is still boring and meandering, completely at the mercy of the chosen songs rather than the filmmakers using the songs to compliment the story (you know? Like proper musicals do?).

How can I resist you? Very easily as it turns out. Gimme, gimme, gimme a fucking gun so I can end my misery.

The Cloverfield Paradox

A lot of people were unhappy about the direction Cloverfield was going. They wanted a continuation of the found footage, kaiju movie from 2008, not an anthology series. I was personally all in favour. Partially because I thought the first Cloverfield was a tad overrated, but mostly because I thought it would be a great opportunity for more experimental film projects and could be a great launchpad for new writers and filmmakers. 10 Cloverfield Lane was a great start. Then The Cloverfield Paradox happened.

The Cloverfield Paradox is basically JJ Abrams trying to have his cake and eat it too. Maintaining the anthology format whilst connecting everything together in a ‘shared universe’ (yes, yet another shared universe). The result was a cliched, poorly edited and idiotic mess of a film that actually took away from the previous two films rather than added to them. Everyone hated it and, as a result, 2018′s Overlord, which was totes going to be part of the Cloververse, was made its own standalone film and Abrams double pinky promised to make a true sequel to the original Cloverfield. A complete and total disaster. No wonder it was a straight-to-Netflix film.

The Handmaid’s Tale - Season 2

This is probably going to be the most controversial entry on the list, but please hear me out because I’m not the only one who has a problem with this season.

I was reluctant to watch The Handmaid’s Tale simply because of how gruesome the original book was, but I forced myself to watch the first season and I thought it was pretty good. It remained faithful to the source material for the most part and included some nice additions that helped to expand the story and mythos. If it was just a one off mini-series, everything would have been fine. But then they made the same mistake as The Man In The High Castle and Under The Dome did where they commissioned another season and attempted to tell a story that goes beyond the book.

There’s a reason why the original story ended where it did. The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t meant to be an empowering story about women sticking it to the patriarchy. It’s a cautionary tale about how fragile our civil rights truly are and how easily they can be taken away from us. It’s designed to shock, not to satisfy. So seeing a handmaid blow herself up in a suicide bombing feels very incongruous and just a little bit silly. It would be like doing a TV adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 where the first season followed the source material and then the second season turned Winston Smith into this heroic freedom fighter trying to overthrow Big Brother. It would represent a fundamental misunderstanding of what the book was about in the first place.

And then of course there’s the increased level of violence in Season 2, which many have complained about. In Season 1 and the original source material, the violence was justified. In Season 2, the motivation behind the violence has gone from ‘how can we effectively demonstrate how easily a fascist patriarchy can happen in the West?’ to ‘what brutal act can we inflict upon Ofglen to shock the audience this week?’ It’s purely for shock and nothing more. And with the showrunner (who I feel I should mention is a man) announcing that he has planned ten seasons of this, it seems that The Handmaid’s Tale is going to go even further with this depravity until it effectively becomes the equivalent of a Saw film.

The Handmaid’s Tale exists as a way of shining light on and critiquing misogyny in its most extreme form. Season 2 however demonstrates that there is a serious risk of it becoming the very thing it’s criticising in the first place.

The Predator

I love the Predator franchise, but The Predator is the worst.

People thought that this would be good because director Shane Black had actually starred in the first Predator movie back in 1987. Instead we got this bloated, confusing, obnoxious and insulting mess of a film that seems to go out of its way to ruin everything that makes Predator so good. There’s no tension. No suspense. No intrigue. Just a bunch of gore, explosions and shitty one liners from annoying and lifeless characters. They essentially took this big alien game hunter from outer space and turned him into a generic monster from a bad summer blockbuster. It no longer hunts for sport. It wants to take over the world and splice our DNA with theirs. But don’t worry, a rogue Predator doesn’t want to kill humans (even though he himself kills a bunch of humans), so he gives us a Predator Iron Man suit to set up a sequel that will probably never happen because this movie was a box office bomb and it fucking SUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKKEEEEEDDDD!!!

This film also has a very nasty streak towards those with disabilities. There’s a lot of jokes at the expense of a character with Tourette’s and it has an extremely ignorant and patronising view of autism, portraying the main character’s kid as being a super genius who can decipher the Predator language and even going so far as to say that he represents ‘the next stage of human evolution.’ Presumably the Predators want social communication difficulties because apparently it helps them hunt somehow.

What with Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox, the future of both the Alien and Predator franchises were very much in question. This film needed to be a success in order to make a case for Disney to keep making more of them. It wasn’t. Congratulations Shane Black. You might have just killed off this franchise for good. Thanks arsehole! :D

also like way back i made a post abt this but idk if its still on this blog but for the assigned posing spots i concluded that basically heejin is always in the middle bc shes center, kim lip acts more of a leader so shes in the middle, and yyxy are also in the middle since they are considered the most popular subunit

the whole script/uniform thing with loona needs to go i h9 it so much its so unnatural - which includes having the same uniform but diff colors for performances (its so cute but for like only a week tho) , letting the girls wear more casual clothes when they do variety shows, radio shows, otw to music shows, etc instead of the obvious coordinated outfits (which also make them look like they wear the same thing to every event), letting the girls post whenever they want on ig (like how red velvet do) and not have their captions look obviously edited by staff, and more that i cant think of all the top of my head

even tho i love loona’s relationship with their choreographer (they gave him notes and a cake on teacher’s day uwu) he rlly aint giving them the best choreo and it just stunts loona’s dancing potential. i rlly want them to work with wjsn’s choreographer bc they know how to do good choreo for a big group!! 

when loona did seventeen’s choreo they seemed more in sync and more composed compared to when they do hi high and it just suited them more so yah!! diff choreographer pls !!!

ioi, wanna one, fromis_9, and izone have pretty decent distributions that fit with their roles (main vocalists have the most lines, rappers have their fair part, dancers get a focus part, etc) - bbc literally could care less !!

A/N: I’ve been watching Ghost Adventures for hours, this show is just such a good meme. Anyways, here’s a fic for ya! I really hope I did the request justice, and I hope you like it! I’ve been having trouble coming up with some ideas lately, so send me some requests !!

The typical chatter and clatter of dinner filled the air. You were at the far end of the table, Bucky on your left and Tony on your right. Vision and Wanda had made a fantastic chicken dumpling soup and salad for dinner, and as the rest of the team ate, they talked amongst each other about their days, recent missions, and other things while you tried to keep to yourself like usual. It’s not that you didn’t like being a part of the team, but you were incredibly shy, and being put on the spot or trying to make small talk gave you pretty bad anxiety. You frequently stumble over your words and can’t really register what someone had said because of it, and honestly, it was embarrassing. You haven’t really been on the team too long. It’s only been about three months, and most of the time you’ve been at the compound has been spent reading, training, or hanging out with Bucky.

The “Lone Wolf” - that’s what they call you. The team gave you the nickname a few weeks after you joined. The name makes sense for you because, like a wolf, you live in a pack. Throughout your life, you’ve only been close to a few people at a time until they would leave you. Eventually, you’d drift back into another pack, but the endless cycle of drifting and being lost has left you with not only trust issues but a shy, nervous demeanor, as well. When you joined the team, you were scared shitless. The combination of all the new faces and people with having to adjust to a new surrounding sent you into a weird state. At first, you spent a lot of time by yourself. You would spend most of the day in your room, reading, drawing, doing whatever you wanted to, until the late hours of the night when you would head down to the training gym where you would spend a few hours releasing your built-up anxiety. Every so often, you’d find Bucky down there. He’d have earbuds in, either lifting an insane amount of weight or sometimes sending a punching bag flying across the room. When you first started going to the gym, the only contact you and Bucky would have was a nod of the head or the flash of a quick, often forced smile, but after a while, you started talking.

Bucky would tell you about his nightmares, and you would tell him stories of your past. Opening up to him felt more natural than breathing for you. You have never trusted anyone so much before. It was like you two had known each other for years, not just a few weeks.

Around him, you feel calm, like even just being in his presence drains you of anxiety. It’s almost like without him around, you’re stuck, locked in a cage of your own shyness, but with him, the lock falls away, and you’re free. He makes it easy to talk to him, and even when you can’t seem to find the right words or a topic to talk about, he still sits with you. The silence between you two isn’t uncomfortable like it would be if it was any other member of the team, but instead, it’s comforting, like you’re both just happy to be near each other. But, around the rest of the team, it was a whole new story.

You frequently stumble over your words, and whenever someone says anything to you, you can’t really register what they had said quickly, and honestly, it was embarrassing. So most of the time you were around the rest of the team, you let them do the talking while you would spectate and occasionally nod or shake your head. Even at dinner, you did your best to keep out of conversation, being too shy to really make any small talk with another member of the team besides Bucky, and tonight was no exception.  

“What do you think, Y/N?” Tony’s voice brings you back to the dinner around you. You look up from your bowl of soup to find everyone’s eyes on you.

“Wh-What?” You blink, sinking down into your seat. Heat quickly pools beneath your skin, and your face is burning.

“What movie should we watch tonight? Pulp Fiction or The Princess Bride?” They were still staring at you. You could feel the anxiety starting to bubble in your veins.

“O-Oh, I, uh...I-I don’t really c-care,” you mumble. The weight of their collective gazes hangs heavy on your shoulders.

“What was that?” Tony arches an eyebrow. “I didn’t quite catch that.”

“Speak up, pipsqueak,” Clint says before taking a sip of water. A few of the other members chuckle. Your gaze drops back down to your bowl and a muscle in your jaw twitches.

“I-I said,” you try to force some more volume into your voice. “I d-don’t really care.”

“Did you guys...hear something?” Clint cups a hand around the outside of his ear. “Some wind, maybe?”

His remark earns even more, stronger chuckles from the group. Now, it felt like flames were licking at your skin.

“I-I, um...I’m tired,” you mutter as you push away from the table, still looking down at the table.

“It’s only six,” Steve calls from down the table. “How are you tired?”

“I j-just…,” you choke as you clutch at the bottom of your shirt.

“C’mon, L.W.,” Tony says through a mouth full of salad. ‘L.W.’ was short for your nickname. You’re not sure who had started to shorten it or when, but the team seems to use it more than your actual name. “Calm down.”

“Yeah,” Clint laughs. “It’s about time you break out of your ‘shy’ shell.”

“I j-just….,” before you can finish, you hastily walk away from the table and head for the elevator to go back to your floor. You push the button, tightly hugging your chest as you wait for the door to slide open. Keeping your eyes glued to your feet, you step into the elevator as soon as it dings. You slowly turn around, the front of your body facing the open doors. As you watch the bottom of the doors close, something catches between them. Your head snaps up at the sound.

Bucky’s metal arm was in between the doors, and they slide back open. He takes a few steps and stands next to you, then hits the button for your shared floor that Steve also lives on. The doors finally closed.

“Hey,” he says gently, placing a hand on the side of your arm. “You okay?”

You could feel a few tears start to prick at your eyes. Your eyes fall again as you avoid his concerned gaze.

“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” you mumble, then clear throat. A few seconds later, the elevator doors open to your floor, and you quickly duck out, leaving Bucky behind. You rush past the open living area and kitchen and into your room - which is across from Bucky’s - and kick the door shut behind you. It didn’t click shut. You turn around and find Bucky standing in the doorway, his metal hand on the doorknob.

“Buck, I said I’m fine,” your tone sounds like you’re warning him under your breath. You sink down onto the end of your bed.

“It’s pretty obvious that you’re not,” Bucky sighs, crossing the room to sit next to you. The mattress dips under his weight. “I don’t blame you for leaving dinner. I would’ve done the same thing if I were you, doll.”

“I…,” you sniffle. “I just don’t get why I’m treated like this. I c-can’t help it that I’m shy and people make me nervous. It’s like I’m just some kind of joke to them.”

“C’mere, doll,” Bucky slides a strong arm behind your back, then gently grabs your arm and pulls you into his side. You rest your head against his shoulder, leaning into his embrace. “I’m sorry I didn’t say anything. I should’ve told ‘em to stop.”

“It’s not your fault,” you whisper. “It’s not your job to protect me. Besides, I probably overreacted.”

“I know it’s not, but I care about you, a lot, and I could’ve at least helped you back there.”

“It’s okay,” you sigh. A few moments pass without either of you speaking. You can feel your mind start to settle as the warmth of Bucky’s hold and his calming presences flushes over you.

“Do you wanna watch somethin’?” Bucky nods towards the T.V. in your room. “I can grab some snacks from the kitchen.”

“Th-That sounds great,” you smile through a sniffle.

“I’ll be right back, doll,” he smiles back and presses a light kiss to the side of your head. He stands up and walks over to your dresser. He opens one of the drawers and pulls out some pajama shorts and a t-shirt, then tosses them over to you.

“Thanks, Buck,” you chuckle. He hums in response and turns out of the room.

By the time you’re done changing, Bucky had returned with his arms full of snacks and a few different movies. He had also changed into more comfortable clothing, opting for sweatpants and a loose-fitting t-shirt. After putting La La Land into the DVD player, Bucky climbs under the blanket of your bed next to you, handing you a bag of your favorite chips. Throughout the movie, Bucky would sing along with you to the songs and make jokes about the apparently cheesy storyline. Near the end of the second movie, you could feel the tug of sleep pulling you away from reality.

“I’m so glad you’re in my life,” you groggily mumbled into his chest.

“I’m not goin’ anywhere, doll,” a light chuckle rumbles in his chest. His arm around your shoulder gently squeezes you. “I’ll always be here. I promise.”

You hum, smiling, as you drift further into sleep. Then, all that remains is the warmth of Bucky’s existence and the thought of him lingering in your mind.

until jaehwan got sick this one time and one of you had to replace him

when you realized that you sucked at rock paper scissors though, it was too late

did i mention that this was not just an animal costume

it was an actual piece of fried chicken

you made a mental reminder to yourself to both praise jaehwan for having the guts to do this everyday AND to beat his ass for coming down with a cold

so now here you are in the middle of the busy street in a chicken costume dancing around and handing out flyers

you swore that you felt a little child bite your hip to see if you were edible

for the first hour, things were going ok

until this group of 5 boys came

dONT GET ME STARTED,,,, ok so

these boys were kind of regulars in the restaurant and in short they were dicks

they would always tease jaehwan about the costume, be super loud while you eating, and basically be rowdy frat boys until they left

except they werent frat boys because they were a dance team

they always tried to hit on you with all different types of pick up lines

which never seemed to match the one on your arm so you were silently thanking not only God but also Jesus

trying to keep in your calm, you turned to them and welcomed them into the restaurant

unfortunately they recognized you as one of their usual waitresses and were like “woah, she’s always been a hot chick, but now she’s literally become one ;)”

how did they even do that

pushing their fuccboi remarks aside you smiled at them and said “welcome inside”

for the rest of the time they were there, you could hear loud whooping and cheering and you swore that you could feel jihoon trying to breathe in and out trying so hard not to slap all of them in the face

by the time they exited, all of them were already quite tipsy

as they exited, one of them actually ran into you, sent the flyers flying all over the place and vomited on the costume

yeah it wasnt pretty

although he mumbled a small “sorry” before walking away with his friends, you were still fuming and you really just wanted to claw his eyes out

but knowing that you’d probably lose one of the most stable things in your life rn, you decided against it and just picked up each flyer very aggressively

you noticed though,,,,,,,,,you werent the only one picking it up

in front of you was one of the boys. the one with the snaggletooth

you see, unlike the others, this boy was sweet and silent

whenever you would put down his food in front of him he would smile the most adorable smile in the world that undeniably made your heart dugun dugun if u get what i mean

anways denying you had a crush on him, you two continued to pick up the flyers until all of them were back in your hands

you two spend the whole walk just talking about yourselves and getting to know more and when you finally arrive at your house it felt like it was only 10 seconds when in reality it was actually like an hour you walked really slowly ok

before you go in, you realize that you didnt even know his name??

so you ask him and hes like

alright so sorry if this is disorganized i swear ive thought this out, and also this involves a lot of speculation considering we never see kami (i know that’s not actually her name and it’s a translation error but im just gonnna use it) but i think that itself is a clue, anyway--

let’s start with the fact that spirit has a need to please. we mostly see this with maka, considering she is his daughter and she kinda despises him. but i think we can also see this after the eve party nightmare arc, when he’s cleaning the hell out of everything to please shinigami. sure, it’s again driven by maka, but he still wants desperately to please.

and actually, let’s talk about that, too. why was he so sure that he would be sent away? consider that we know he’s death’s most powerful scythe. it’s said several times in canon. so why would he be sent away over making a mistake about where to go? if you think about what he knew when the lock was coming down, he made the right choice. he had no idea when death would be able to leave, he just knew medusa was a witch and she was escaping and stein and the kids were being jettisoned out of there to probably fight her

he made the only choice that made sense. chasing the witch.

and death would know this. so why was spirit so sure that he was going to be sent away from the city and his daughter? because of insecurity, and he had been shown that mistakes bring the ultimate punishment: loss of contact with maka

the only reason spirit sees maka as often as he does is because she goes to the school he works at. but we know how loving and devoted a father he is (if a little silly and overprotective). so why did kami get full custody? because the justice system always sides with women, no matter if they are the better parent or not. and what did kami do with that full custody?

in fact, she might have already been gone while judges were deciding that somehow she was the more responsible parent. because the series starts just after the divorce was finalized, but from how maka acts when she gets a postcard, her mother has already been gone for months. what kind of parent leaves their child alone when theyre in the middle of a divorce?

and yes, kami is a meister, so maybe she was away on important meister business. but still, wouldnt the very recent divorce at least earn a visit home? or a phone call? in fact, what parent stays away for months at a time, doing a dangerous job, and knowing that their child is doing the same dangerous job, would not constantly call for check ups? what parent just sends a postcard every few months, with no other word of “hey maka, how have you been?”

you cant deny that, objectively, spirit would have been more responsible. yes, he’s an alcoholic--but he’s an alcoholic because of the divorce, because he has no custody of maka. he’s right there in the city, to support her. but because he has no custody, he barely has the chance to rebuild a relationship with the most important thing in his life. even if kami hated him for cheating, she would know how good of a father he is. so why did she take custody?

spite and punishment

she hates him for cheating. which, is warranted. but she also hates him for getting out of his control. here’s where it gets pretty speculative, but stick with me. we know they had maka when spirit was ~18. they probably found out about the pregnancy when he was 17. which is fucking terrifying in the first place, adding onto the fact theyre in the middle of a dangerous war, and we dont know if spirit was a deathscythe by this time. either way, terrifying. they dont know what to do. so they get married. and we can all agree 18 is too young to get married, right? so already at a young age, spirit was tied down to kami through pregnancy and marriage (and her to him)

consider again spirit’s irrational urge to please, and his belief that mistakes will cause him to lose maka. i think that kami would use maka against him. if he did something she didnt like, she’d remind him that they were married, he had a responsibility to them, if he didnt do what she said he wouldn't be seeing maka again. (she’d also kami chop him, which i think arguably could be said is physical abuse, but idk since it’s played as comedy within the series. interpret as u will). she wanted him under her thumb, because she was his meister and he was her weapon, and meisters control their weapons

i also think she was turning maka against him. we know from pictures and flashbacks that spirit was a doting father. he loved her more than anything. but ask maka, and all she can remember is the cheating. which is valid, but it seems like she completely ignores the good memories. i think all this was reinforced by her mother, that her father is awful and doesnt love them

now i know this is all conjecture, but consider maka. we know her personality is a lot like kami’s. spirit says so. so,we can kind of infer kami’s personality through hers. let’s go down the list. stubborn, confident, strong, temperamental. consider how her and soul get along at the start of the series. they fight constantly. soul gets maka chopped pretty frequently. consider the fact that soul and spirit are actually a lot alike. laid back, kinda emotional, obsessed with a certain image (cool, flirty). i think we can infer spirit and kami’s relationship from maka and soul’s. and i think that shows a lot

consider if soul and maka hadnt improved their relationship. consider if suddenly they had a kid and had to get married. consider if soul was just a little less stubborn and a little more submissive (and a little more like spirit)

what you’ve got there is an undeniably toxic relationship

now, to address the cheating. it wasnt right, no matter what, it was especially awful that maka saw. but i dont think that changes the fact that spirit was cheating to feel loved. if kami was like i say she is--if she was controlling, and belittling, and using maka against him. do you think he’d feel loved? not at all. so what does he turn to? the only thing that he can think of, that will make him feel loved: sex and women. kami didnt provide him the support he needed. he was already emotionally unstable bc of stein and his whole deal. kami should have been understanding, patient, loving. instead she kami chopped him into a shape she liked

spirit turned to cheating bc sex was the only thing that made him feel like he was wanted. and kami--kami didnt like losing control. so she punished him the best way she could: taking maka

in conclusion, spirit is insecure and afraid of rejection and losing his daughter because his exwife took custody just to make him feel like shit bc he left her control, thanks for coming to my tedtalk and im sorry this is so long
