Surma Tribe, Ethiopia, Omo Valley

Surma is the official Ethiopian umbrella term for three ethnic groups in South Ethiopia: the Suri people, the Mursi people and the Mekan people.

The Surma children devise creative head ornaments from leaves, branches, seedpods, fruit and seeds. The Mursi tribe use horns, bones, shells and skins. Body painting, as practiced here in East Africa, the cradle of humanity, seems to me to represent a way of life that dates from prehistory and once enabled humankind to overcome the hostility of nature. Art was then a means of survival.

In Tulgit and Kibish you find many children by the riverbank waiting for photos in the afternoon. The usage of flowers for decoration is a wonderful habit of the children. The kids decorate themselves with flowers, blossoms and green plants they can find everywhere around the villages. However, as nice as it looks, the decoration with the flowers is not an old tradition, you cannot see this kind of decoration in remote Suri villages. The kids, also the boys, are doing it for photos and for getting a little money. But anyway: it is beautiful and funny. Especially the boys are very creative, they climb any tree they find and make bizarre faces or funny poses just to attract the tourists for a photo.

We are an Culture Inspired Urban Lifestyle Brand. Founded in 2015 by us, two free thinking pioneers. The African philosophy ‘Ubuntu’ inspired us to create, share and connect.

Our clothing and jewelry collection is inspired by different cultures around the world, religions, traditions and spirituality.

We use African cotton wax prints, Java prints and natural materials as bamboo, seeds & gemstones. All items are eco-friendly and fair trade produced. By using partly vintage clothing we want to point out a sustainable way of consuming. We like to offer customers a choice between buying new items or restyled vintage. We want to create consciousness in roots and unity.

All our items are handmade in our studio, based at Rotterdam, Holland.
