The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective.

WUSB always had a history of dee-jays finding new music off each other. This was and always will be no issue. Thanks to Alice of Nightmare Aquarium, I’d never know who Ariel Pink or William Onyeabor were, and quadruple that for Black Marble, an act that’s become one of my best discoveries of the decade. Others had always asked me for playlists and “that one song I played fifteen minutes before the end of my show”. Our lives are a little more tolerable thanks to our station.

Shaerie, our dee-jay and resident astrologist, decided to create a secret group to post finds for only us to listen to. The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective was established in August 2016. She bestowed our dee-jay Conor (Headless Elvis) the title of admin- and the two started letting their closest friends and station volunteers in. “If there’s shitty music in this group, I will delete the fuck out of it”, she declared. Their first order of business? PWR BTTM’s “New Hampshire”. That was back when everyone and their cat loved them, until they were outed as sexual predators and then became shitty. A month later, I was in. The SRS (“serious”) collective took off and we posted on a near-endless basis that almost everyone at one point had some catching up to do. Shaerie and Conor shared many a Bandcamp and d.i.y. find. They provided our daily allowance of acts in Downtown Boys, Ty Segall, Slowthai, Slothrust, Kal Marks, wosX, Car Seat Headrest, Saint Pepsi, Really Big Pinecone, and more. Cornflower posted some Argentinian musicks; and many others pitched the obvious, the classics, and some obscure finds in Brian Eno, Neu, Velvet Underground, The Fall, Richard Hell, Bush Tetras, Suicide, old-school hip-hop, alternative, shoegaze, and other nutritious pieces of good music. Other posts of theirs in Future Islands, Rolling Blackouts C.F., Speedy Ortiz, Idles, Snail Mail, Algiers, and Fidlar were ones my show Omega WUSB already played beforehand. They had our phases of Mac DeMarco and Frankie Cosmos worship. Did you know she was Phoebe Cates’ daughter? Shocked the shit out of me.

Some things dropped off on SRS became essential not only for Omega WUSB but for me personally. Conor’s why I’ve played Cende, Marijuana Deathsquads, Machine Girl, and Ghost Spell, and why I’m now a huge fan of Water From Your Eyes / Rachel Brown. He’s also the one responsible for me discovering Post Trash which helped influenced my show’s format and made me find the beauty of d.i.y. music. You can thank our friend Toasty for Palm’s “Dog Milk” that became part of a personal soundtrack to a wildly surreal summer.

Sharing is caring collecting, so I spread the wealth, too. I posted anything you could think of in hopes of resonating with our own. Most of the time it hit. Other times I struck out. Who was the only one who came though if others didn’t half the time? Spooky Christmas, the other (female) dee-jay who cares about sample culture as much as I do. Hooded Fang and Javelin were two which people jumped on board. Conor saw my post for Unstoppable Death Machines and he was floored: the billboard shown on Know Tomorrow was a real one very familiar for those driving west on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and he was a fan of theirs.

We didn’t just post music, we posted current events, too. Our staff were (and still are) very into the meat of the city scene. They were sad to see Shea Stadium close down for good. That’s the venue, not the former home of the New York Mets but that’s been gone. Citi Field should also close down, too. (Go Yankees!) As Shaerie left, Conor took over and gave SRS an important edge. Leave it up to him to post pieces from the Washington City Paper, where Priest’s Katie Alice Grier questioned how safe safe-spaces really were; or from the Creative Independent about Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale living in, owning, and being evicted from d.i.y. venues. See where our mindset is?

Even there were a few moments that I found my fellow staffers’ actions (besides posting PWR BTTM) questionable and grounds for expulsion from the SRS and the station. Toto’s “Africa” but with vocals one step out of key and off-beat. Marcus Mixx’ “My Oui Oui (New York)” for fuck’s sake. Smashmouth’s “Allstar” but every word is “somebody”. Yeah, somebody should’ve deserved a caning for that one. Mac Sabbath? Really? Thank Based God we didn’t post Okilly Dokilly, either.

But, they redeemed themselves when they really hit a few out of the park. Conor’s bandmate Jasko found Black Merda’s self-titled album. I thought I was the only one who knew of them. Cornflower found The Avalanches’ “Since I Met You”, which solved a mystery of what that song was I recorded on cassette 15 years ago. Conor once again wowed me when he posted Pigs’ You Ruin Everything (Unsane-related), because again, I had that all to myself. Kleenex’ “Nice”, Elite Gymnastics, Thee Oh Sees, and Death’s “Politicians In My Eyes” were other finds from our staffers which Omega WUSB played beforehand.

If not for Shaerie and Conor, I wouldn’t have a read on where some of the best dee-jays and selectors stood and what we’re all about. Some of what they posted for all to see was what I essentially wanted. What I wanted, like everyone else, was a connection with ourselves and the music. And I got it all in spades and diamonds. Thanks to everyone involved, I wouldn’t have summer memories, a newfound appreciation for the local / city scene, or the feelings I get for hearing specific sounds, vibes, ideas, and projections from certain artists. These are feelings I want and what they come with is a vision that makes me see and imagine things others don’t. As an aside, it was great to see what we’d come up with and how excited we were when we got it. It was a joker’s-wild goin’ on and we didn’t know what the fuck would happen.

For anyone keeping score, here’s what we took with us and what we gave back. Now it’s yours. It’s been a ride. SRS took off and ran well for a year-and-a-half. It slowed to a halt when everyone moved on and activity dwindled down. With six months of no activity at last year’s end (and a couple of autopsy posts after the fact just to see if anyone still cared), I finally gave SRS a proper eulogy. It’s sad that it came to an end. Hopefully, it will come back as a hologram one day.

I have a problem with Rook: He speaks French. Rook, where did you learn French? Is there a France in Twisted Wonderland? How is French cuisine a commonly known thing in Pomefiore? And if so, where is this France? How can there be a place that speaks French or a Japan for Lilia to learn about natto if Crowley has never heard of our world in his 100 year career? Random Spacefiller Before the Cut: Leona living up to the phrase “cats hate collars”

[Spoiler 5-10] Jamil: Kalim, it’s fine if you don’t (clean gym with ADeuce)……This line really stuck out to me because although we’ve seen Jamil be concerned over Kalim before, it’s the first time he’s showing signs of caring AFTER their incident in Ch 4 (AKA new relationship standing is: we are not friends) and it also invokes a different attitude.

Part of it is still probably out of habit, old-Jamil would say a master shouldn’t be doing the work of a servant. Another part I feel like is guilt. Having Kalim follow his orders (even though it wasn’t directed at him) might’ve triggered Jamil to how he treated Kalim in Ch 4. And his discomfort shows that he’s reflected on his actions and knows he was in the wrong. Grim comments the change in Jamil is extreme (duh Grim, his quick turnaround is thanks to his maturity, unlike some Overblotters…). The thing with Jamil is his growth will never by shown explicitly due to his nature, but the small snippets of focus on him give enough to read between the lines.

And throughout Ch 5 we see Jamil still keeping an eye on Kalim from afar, and his expressions are pensive. Kalim is showing signs of putting himself as an equal with Jamil by doing the same tasks as him and learning to put in effort at improving himself so that he may compete with Jamil on equal footings. And Jamil has to fight back old habits of giving in his victories to/coddling Kalim (thereby enabling his ignorant helplessness) and learn to let Kalim (and himself) go through the process so that they can both mature as their own person. And I think this growth between them will develop further in this chapter. Also I high key love Kalim’s reasoning for picking his favorite story. The boy believes in 2nd chances and redemption arcs.

It’s a bit of a pity that Jamil’s frustration was directed towards Kalim instead of the social system of the Land of Hot Sands itself, because he clearly is grappling with himself on his opinion of Kalim (yesss Jamil, be friends. He’s a good guy and you know it). But then again, he’s a teenage boy so it’s understandable that he’s unable to see past the oppression in his immediate space to see the issue in light of the big political picture of it all. And it seems that our overblotters suffering from twisted oppression(s) of this world outside of their control seems to be a common theme.

[Spoiler 5-21] So at this rate, we’ve technically had a sleepover with Savanaclaw, and Octavinelle, and now with Heartslabyul/Scarabia/Pomefiore. Will we get to finish the set with Ignihyde and Diasomnia? Will Malleus finally get invited to something???

Thoughts on Vil so Far: Coincidentally, while playing through Ch5, I came across an article talking about how ultra-Independence is a trauma response and while reading it, a lot of it resonated with Vil from what we’ve observed of him so far. From what I gleaned, characteristics of ultra-independence is:

A survival mechanism stemming from a past trauma (neglect/abuse/bullying/grief/etc.)

Tend to be the rulers of the household (They run the show)

Take on all the responsibilities/decisions because they don’t trust others to make the correct decisions (micromanage)

Results in too much responsibility on one person –> Become overwhelmed/unable to cope with the pressure

Asking for help/Admitting they are not coping is terrifying

Tend to take on codependent relationships (allows them to fix others which gives them a sense of security/control rather than a person who tries to help them)

And in the same order, I’ll relate the observations and how it pertains to Vil:

He holds bitterness to his past/hometown for whatever he experienced there (humiliation?) and is disillusioned by the concept that hard work will bring good results (the falsity of which he is currently experiencing due to, despite all his efforts, Neige is still “#1″). In Deuce’s SR Lab Coat story and other instances, he always scolds those who ask for help without putting in their own effort first.

Same as above, the strictness of his lessons in Fairy Gala, the nitpickiness of the smoke color in his Lab Coat Story, his critiques during lessons as well as managing everyone’s diet and skincare

We’re seeing him slowly slip and act out of character like standing blankly in the middle of the hall (every time that ink blot drips yo). Also I could add in the way his severity towards Epel is becoming more and more unreasonable and more of living a projection of his own desires through someone else (tiger mom anyone?)

Rook knows what’s up. Despite others seeing Vil as a very strong and confident personality, Rook’s description of him suggests something fragile and needs to be looked after. More so especially if the person in distress is unable to ask for help himself

His interaction with Azul in Azul’s SR Ceremony Robe story and Jade in Jade’s SSR story shows he is another one of those who hates being indebted to others. He will not be a charity case. His general relationship with Rook is also very quid pro quo. And the whole nosiness of him constantly getting involved in improving others to reach their full potential (he wanted to continue Fairy Gala boys’s modeling career even when it was unnecessary).

Rook mentions how he and Vil are excited for the first years to break out of their shells and show their true beauty and tbh I hope that means one step closer to finding their Unique Magic. Let it happen dang it! Also, when Vil OBs, I see Rook reacting in 1 of 2 ways: him with his beauty optimism will still find OB Queen as Beauté! in its own way OR  he’ll call it out that Vil has strayed from his true beauty (AKA: for once, you no beauté!). But he’ll help get his Roi de Poison come back to his senses and back on track. Yah I’m leaning towards option 2.

First Take Review: Audiovector SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté Speakers

As previously chronicled, a move to a new residence last year challenged my undying devotion to 2-way monitor speakers. Though I had two great ones at my disposal - the Silverline SR17 Supreme and Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté - asking these relatively compact speakers to fill a large living space with the weight and scale of a symphony orchestra was unreasonable. I needed something that could move more air, but far too many big speakers I’ve heard sound slow, discombobulated or opaque vs. a quality 2-way. Enter the Audiovector SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté (USD $25,000), which confidently assured me of no such compromises during an audition at Audiovision SF. After a bit of listening to some alternatives and the requisite spousal approval, I traded in the SR 1’s and placed an order for a pair of SR 6 AA in piano black with the intention of keeping these as my long-term reference speakers. I’ve logged about 3 months with them and while they’re still taking their sweet time to break in, it’s time to gut check: are they turning out to be everything I had hoped they would be?

Design & Setup

IMO this is a gorgeous speaker that looks impressive in a room without being dominating - sleek and elegant, with pleasing proportions and a beautiful finish. While our room is a good size, it is an all-purpose living space for my wife and me plus our two large-ish dogs, and there was no way audiophile speakers with a large footprint or funky aesthetics would ever set foot in our home. The Audiovector was a relatively easy sell to my wife and there have been zero groans or offhand remarks about its size or appearance, which makes it an unmitigated success. The magnetically-attached grills are wonderfully crafted, muting the technical look of the baffle during more casual listening, snapping on and off with precision and sticking together for easy storage. The sound isn't bad with them on either - fractionally less open and bright, which is actually kind of nice for background music.

Full-range speakers can be tricky to position to balance bass response with soundstaging, but in my room I’ve found the SR 6 AA to be very easygoing. Thanks to a combination of front-firing ports, bottom-firing compound woofer and careful bass alignment, they work remarkably well close to the wall. I currently have them with just 50cm (20”) of clearance behind them, and I have yet to pick up on any port noises. Yes, the soundstage would be even deeper if I pulled them out further, but it’s still quite satisfactory and the bass is nicely filled out without any boom whatsoever. As with the SR 1 Avantgarde Arretés, I find the sweet spot to be a bit narrow - sound is good off-axis, but you really need to be centered precisely for the image and soundstage to lock in. This is in contrast to traditional 2-way monitors from e.g. Silverline Audio or Role Audio that disappear in your room with little effort and are fairly forgiving of listening position.

Sensitivity is specified at 92.5dB/watt @ 8 ohms, quite good for a dynamic speaker. Sensitivity ratings can be deceiving (measurement methods are not rigorously standardized) but the SR 6 AA certainly puts out noticeably more sound per watt than the 90.5dB-rated Silverline SR17. I haven't seen an impedance plot or minimum impedance spec but it seems pretty easy to drive, with all of my amps sounding open and unstrained. With pop or orchestral material at moderately high volume levels I could get the bias meter on the Pass Labs XA30.5 to wiggle the tiniest bit, indicating the peaks were surpassing the 30-watt Class A bias range, but just barely. While the speakers can clearly take a lot more power (I would have loved to have the 300wpc Bryston 4B Cubed around), a quality amp of moderate power rating (e.g. 50 watts) but enough current to feed the 4 drivers should have no trouble. The Pass sounded great, I love the 55-watt Valvet A4 Mk.II monoblocks on them, and right now the 50-watt Gryphon Essence is singing away.

The Sound

Listening to the SR 6 AA strikes me as the audio equivalent of stepping into something like a big smooth Mercedes S-class, only to find it as lithe and responsive behind the wheel as a Lotus Elise. But step on the accelerator, and sure enough you will hear and feel the grunt of a big bi-turbo V-12. And most of all, it’s fun. Like a car that beckons you to drive it, there’s an aliveness and energy to the SR 6 that compels you to listen to as much music as possible. I could listen to record after record all day and night and never stop.

Coming back to less-fanciful analogies, I love how the SR 6 has all the coherence, focus and speed of the best 2-way monitors, then adds low-frequency power and dynamic ease without any sort of compromise that I can discern. At first I was a bit concerned with the 350Hz crossover point between midrange and woofer - right in the D to A string range of the violin - but I honestly can not hear it at all. The compound bass system also seamlessly integrates from 80Hz down, and all I hear is a very continuous presentation with consistent speed, articulation and tonality. This is extremely rare in my experience - many big, expensive and elaborate speakers have had some sort of discontinuity that bugged me. 

Coming back to the 2-way comparison, I am missing absolutely nothing about my previous monitor speakers. The SR 6 has even more midrange focus and resolving power than its excellent little sibling, the SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté, while sounding less dry and analytical. Much of this can be attributed to the fullness of the lower midrange which puts more meat on the bones of everything. It’s not overtly warm, but has just the slightest bit of extra juice to give pop tunes great bounce and string sections lovely lyricism. My wife noted that orchestral melodies sounded particularly mellifluous and alluring.

This brings me to another point: the SR 6 simultaneously strikes me as tremendously transparent, neutral and precise, but also possessing character. It's very hard for me to describe it any one way because the common sonic labels - warm, analytical, fast, full, forward, laid-back, smooth, sharp - just won't stick. Depending on the associated gear, setup and recording, any of those above descriptors could be applied to a very subtle degree, but switch up the source material and a different set of adjectives come to mind. Going to another abstract analogy, it reminds me of a delicious mineral water - so clean and crisp and pure, but not totally flavorless. The SR 6 is never bland to my ears; sure, a bad recording still won't sound great, but the presentation never falls flat. It has a fun and engaging take on music, perhaps due to just a hair of judicious boost somewhere in the midrange, that isn't dead-on neutral, but subtle and musically consonant. This is what I find most fascinating about Audiovector's tuning vs. other ultra high-end marques such as Magico or YG Acoustics, which can be breathtakingly transparent to the point of sounding flavorless, and incredibly demanding of source material. In those special moments with the right setup and recording they certainly could scale to greater heights of realism than the SR 6, but the Audiovector just sounds consistently natural and satisfying to me.

A few words on what this speaker is not. While it certainly qualifies as full-range, it does not have an overtly “big” sound. You won’t get the same sort of easy, larger-than-life presentation that a large-woofered speaker in a more classic mold (think a big old JBL with 15” woofers, or a top-end model from PBN or Legacy Audio) will give you. If you want Louis Armstrong to sound like he's sitting in your lap, or you’re trying to reproduce a club environment in your living room, there are better speakers for that. Bass extension is deep and powerful, but the quality of the bass that stands out is that it’s always focused - pitch, timing and weight are precise and balanced. It will convincingly represent a symphony orchestra, and the throbbing bass line of Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy will have you bouncing in your seat, but it’s not shake-your-walls, send-you-into-intestinal-distress kind of bass. It is easily the most detailed and revealing speaker I have had in my room, but it is never hyped-up, instead laying the music out for you to inspect at your discretion. The superb Audiovector AMT tweeter has a lot to do with this - it is free of the typical resonant modes of most dome tweeters and has resolving power well above the audible range, with none of the peakiness of metal domes that can go from vivid to fatiguing over time. There are designs with more natural warmth, that can make a female vocal sound more magically in-the-room and human - Silverline and GamuT are two superb marques that come to mind - but they might not be as neutral and versatile across many genres of music.

The Audiovector is much more precise and adaptable than speakers which blow you away with a particular aspect of their performance. It is the sort of sound that may not stand out as much in 3 minute sound bites at an audio show or dealer, but is more accurate and satisfying in the long term. And I appreciate how it effortlessly fills my open space with sound, but never overpowers it. This is a remarkably lifestyle-friendly speaker by high-end standards and I could see it working very well in a more modestly-sized room, though if you have a small room you are probably better off saving some money on the R 3 Arreté and putting the funds towards upstream gear.

The Take

As you can probably guess, I'm liking the Audiovector SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté a whole lot. A big speaker is always a risky proposition - you never know if it'll work in your room, reproducing a wider range of frequencies means more things to critique and potentially bug you, and of course there's the financial outlay. But so far, other than the need for extended break-in time, there have been zero frustrations and only delights in my experience.

As I write this, I'm listening to a lovely record of Bruckner 9 by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with Daniele Gatti (Qobuz 24/96, Tidal MQA) at moderate volume. And I honestly have nothing to observe or say about the speakers because it just sounds good and right and I'm enjoying the performance. It's a total system effort of course, with contributions from PS Audio, Furutech, Audience and the transcendental Gryphon Essence pre + power amp, but as a music lover first and foremost I can think of no higher compliment for the Audiovector SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté.

The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective.

WUSB always had a history of dee-jays finding new music off each other. This was and always will be no issue. Thanks to Alice of Nightmare Aquarium, I’d never know who Ariel Pink or William Onyeabor were, and quadruple that for Black Marble, an act that’s become one of my best discoveries of the decade. Others had always asked me for playlists and “that one song I played fifteen minutes before the end of my show”. Our lives are a little more tolerable thanks to our station.

Shaerie, our dee-jay and resident astrologist, decided to create a secret group to post finds for only us to listen to. The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective was established in August 2016. She bestowed our dee-jay Conor (Headless Elvis) the title of admin- and the two started letting their closest friends and station volunteers in. “If there’s shitty music in this group, I will delete the fuck out of it”, she declared. Their first order of business? PWR BTTM’s “New Hampshire”. That was back when everyone and their cat loved them, until they were outed as sexual predators and then became shitty. We’ve yet to delete the fuck out of them, hmmm?

A month later, I was in. The SRS (“serious”) collective took off and we posted on a near-endless basis that almost everyone at one point had some catching up to do. Shaerie and Conor shared many a Bandcamp and d.i.y. find. They provided our daily allowance of acts in Downtown Boys, Ty Segall, Slowthai, Slothrust, Kal Marks, wosX, Car Seat Headrest, Saint Pepsi, Really Big Pinecone, and more. Cornflower posted some Argentinian musicks; and many others pitched the obvious, the classics, and some obscure finds in Brian Eno, Neu, Velvet Underground, The Fall, Richard Hell, Bush Tetras, Suicide, old-school hip-hop, alternative, shoegaze, and other nutritious pieces of good music. Other posts of theirs in Future Islands, Rolling Blackouts C.F., Speedy Ortiz, Idles, Snail Mail, Algiers, and Fidlar were ones my show Omega WUSB already played beforehand. They had our phases of Mac DeMarco and Frankie Cosmos worship. Did you know she was Phoebe Cates’ daughter? Shocked the shit out of me.

Some things dropped off on SRS became essential not only for Omega WUSB but for me personally. Conor’s why I’ve played Cende, Marijuana Deathsquads, Machine Girl, and Ghost Spell, and why I’m now a huge fan of Water From Your Eyes / Rachel Brown. He’s also the one responsible for me discovering Post Trash which helped influenced my show’s format and made me find the beauty of d.i.y. music. You can thank our friend Toasty for Palm’s “Dog Milk” that became part of a personal soundtrack to a wildly surreal summer.

Sharing is caring collecting, so I spread the wealth, too. I posted anything you could think of in hopes of resonating with our own. Most of the time it hit. Other times I struck out. Who was the only one who came though if others didn’t half the time? Spooky Christmas, the other (female) dee-jay who cares about sample culture as much as I do. Hooded Fang and Javelin were two which people jumped on board. Conor saw my post for Unstoppable Death Machines and he was floored: the billboard shown on Know Tomorrow was a real one very familiar for those driving west on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and he was a fan of theirs.

We didn’t just post music, we posted current events, too. Our staff were (and still are) very into the meat of the city scene. They were sad to see Shea Stadium close down for good. That’s the venue, not the former home of the New York Mets but that’s been gone. Citi Field should also close down, too. (Go Yankees!) As Shaerie left, Conor took over and gave SRS an important edge. Leave it up to him to post pieces from the Washington City Paper, where Priest’s Katie Alice Grier questioned how safe safe-spaces really were; or from the Creative Independent about Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale living in, owning, and being evicted from d.i.y. venues. See where our mindset is?

Even there were a few moments that I found my fellow staffers’ actions (besides posting PWR BTTM) questionable and grounds for expulsion from the SRS and the station. Toto’s “Africa” but with vocals one step out of key and off-beat. Marcus Mixx’ “My Oui Oui (New York)” for fuck’s sake. Smashmouth’s “Allstar” but every word is “somebody”. Yeah, somebody should’ve deserved a caning for that one. Mac Sabbath? Really? Thank Based God we didn’t post Okilly Dokilly, either.

But, they redeemed themselves when they really hit a few out of the park. Conor’s bandmate Jasko found Black Merda’s self-titled album. I thought I was the only one who knew of them. Cornflower found The Avalanches’ “Since I Met You”, which solved a mystery of what that song was I recorded on cassette 15 years ago. Conor once again wowed me when he posted Pigs’ You Ruin Everything (Unsane-related), because again, I had that all to myself. Kleenex’ “Nice”, Elite Gymnastics, Thee Oh Sees, and Death’s “Politicians In My Eyes” were other finds from our staffers which Omega WUSB played beforehand.

If not for Shaerie and Conor, I wouldn’t have a read on where some of the best dee-jays and selectors stood and what we’re all about. Some of what they posted for all to see was what I essentially wanted. What I wanted, like everyone else, was a connection with ourselves and the music. And I got it all in spades and diamonds. Thanks to everyone involved, I wouldn’t have summer memories, a newfound appreciation for the local / city scene, or the feelings I get for hearing specific sounds, vibes, ideas, and projections from certain artists. These are feelings I want and what they come with is a vision that makes me see and imagine things others don’t. As an aside, it was great to see what we’d come up with and how excited we were when we got it. It was a joker’s-wild goin’ on and we didn’t know what the fuck would happen.

For anyone keeping score, here’s what we took with us and what we gave back. Now it’s yours. It’s been a ride. SRS took off and ran well for a year-and-a-half. It slowed to a halt when everyone moved on and activity dwindled down. With six months of no activity at last year’s end (and a couple of autopsy posts after the fact just to see if anyone still cared), I finally gave SRS a proper eulogy. It’s sad that it came to an end. Hopefully, it will come back as a hologram one day.

Getting three Sinister Intent accessories is a great, easy way to boost your damage and CP. Aside from that though, I can't think of anything else that's f2p-friendly. If you have the time and funds, you can get a (strong) IB set, a strong pet, farm for a good title (or buy one), enhance and sage your gear, perfect your Elrianode armor and Void weapon, and farm for resonance (120 is the community-set-consensus minimum) and Varnimyr accessories.

stop screaming around. Many players said before for Rosso raid 320k and 350k CP is too low compared how hard raid is. You have story mode so...? You can play this raid? Yes. And stop saying +9 and +10 eq and weap +11 for f2p is impossible when this is possible if you want.

+10 either costs billions of ED (forgot the exact amount, but I think it was around 3 bil) which could take months to get depending on the player’s free time to grind and/or ability to play the market or it’s random chance via enhancement events.  In my 5 years of playing as f2p, I have only successfully enhanced from +9 to +10 twice.  Both of which were within the past year.  So, yes, it is unrealistic to expect a f2p to have a +10 weapon especially when you have to take into consideration a full IB set is basically a necessity to reach minimum CP levels for the new region.  So which is it?  A full IB set or a +10?

I merely said it was unrealistic to expect f2p players (especially ones on the casual side) to have full +9/+10 Elrianode armor, but okay.  I 100% said it’s impossible for f2p players to have a +9.  Sure. Let’s go with that.  Anyway, +9s are 600 mil, or around there, right? That can take months to make depending on the player’s ability to grind and/or their ability to play the market.  As for enhancing... it’s really only cost efficient to try during enhancement events due to the freebies KoG gives out.  However, I have personally never upgraded a +8 -> +9.  Just to remind you, I’ve played for 5 years.

I really don’t think you truly read what I wrote.  I’ll bold what you seemed to miss.  “KoG changing the CP requirement for Varnimyr Raid NORMAL mode to a flat 400k thus blocking players who don’t already have the Varnimyr raid weapon from getting it unless they have perfect Elrianode gear, perfect sockets, and a +10 Void”.  That’s a bad thing.  Players who are really trying to meet the current minimal requirement are soon going to have a steeper hill to climb.  It’s like running a marathon and the end is in sight, but the goal post is suddenly moved.  These players are going to feel discouraged and likely quit because all their work was unexpectedly made meaningless.  New players who come into the game, reach Varnimyr, and see there’s a weapon and some neat accessories in the Normal mode will be discouraged when they see that 400k CP requirement.  They’ll likely quit.  Why?  The area as a whole averages to 200k CP, which is probably obtainable with a +9 Heroic set and Sinister Intent 3/3.  Players get a free +9 amulet via that Heroic questline.  250k CP isn’t too much of a stretch from there with Sinister Intent 3/3... and Elrianode 3/3 which can be very costly depending on the pieces one needs/wants.  However, I must admit my perspective could be skewed since one of my character’s whose CP is barely over 200k has SR 9/9, no Sinister Intent accessories, and no Elrianode accessories.  Without my SR set, that character’s CP would be considerably lower, but I’m not emotionally attached enough to this situation to log in and check.  I’m really only replying to this because I’m bored, but I’m digressing.  Anywho... Bumping the CP requirement for Normal mode from 250k CP -> 400k CP isn’t a logical response considering what I stated about Varnimyr’s overall CP requirement.  The appropriate response actually would’ve been to lower the dungeon’s difficulty to the CP requirement they initially set.  This is also ignoring the fact Rigomor’s minimal requirement is 400k CP.  Why are dungeons in Varnimyr, the region before Rigomor, reaching 400k CP?  From a progression standpoint, it makes no sense.

Also have you seen KoG’s official response to raising the CP requirement as translated by 2na [x]?  I’ll put it here so you don’t have to scroll.  “In the earlier planning of Varnimyr Raids, the CP limit was set lower out of consideration for CP levels of players at the time.However, we determined that the CP limit needed an increase for the content to be suitable of being a raid.Therefore, we’re planning to increase the entry CP limit to 400,000.This change will be applied in the next patch.”  Damn.  I can’t believe KoG hates new players and f2p who are trying to meet the CP requirement.  Oh wait... I knew that already.

Anyway, as I’ve been saying for years at this point, KoG’s actively trying to kill the game.  Thanks for your time.

The new CP limit actually represents how difficult the raid is. You wouldn't get into a raid party with 250K CP unless you're a Bluhen or CeT anyway. It was either nerfing the raids, or actually giving them an appropriate CP requirement.

I can’t believe nerfing those Varnimyr dungeons to meet the CP requirement they’ve had since release is too much of a logical move so everyone thinks it’s stupid. =/

First, thank you all so much for your responses, I appreciate it so much!  Also, thanks for you patience while I reblogged my own dang survey XD

Seeking Resonance is the winner!  I know from past surveys that people generally want me to finish my old fics before I start new ones (shocking, I know XD).  This is a bit rough for me, because I’m itching to write something more lighthearted...  But I also truly do want to finish what I started.  

So, once After August is complete (only 1 chapter remains), I will do my best to complete SR, at least until November.  Hopefully I can get a few updates in.

And speaking of November...

HOLY COW.  SO MANY VOTES FOR EIMI IN TRI.

I didn’t even come up with this idea!  While Tri was running, I received PMs from people asking...  Basically, what would Eimi have done here?  Would Eimi worry about Iori?  Would she feel betrayed when she saw the Kaiser?  What would happen to Galemon after the Reboot and during the infection?  I think I sort of... jokingly mentioned writing a fic to address those questions, and people... seemed enthusiastic!

I’ll admit that I’m... well, really surprised!  For one, I mean, uh...  Generally, OCs are unpopular, and I always see myself as sort of...  Being kind of embarrassing.  Sort of being like...  “Er, ehehehe, here’s an OC fic, ahahha, I know fandoms hate them but, ahhhh well, HERE YOU GO!”

So, I just... thank you all for loving Eimi and Galemon *weep*

Secondly, I was under the impression that Tri is pretty divisive, with people either loving or hating it.  But I also think that...  People who disliked Tri might want a fandom author to...  Well, to address some of the things they didn’t like about the canon content (ie, the “I fix for you” fanfic genre).  I don’t want to imply that Tri was broken and needs fixing, but there are points that are unpopular for a lot of the fanbase.  So maybe that’s why you guys are interested?  When I wrote this drabble set in Kokuhaku, I received a few messages to that effect.

So, well, I’mma do it for Nanowrimo!  There are almost 9 weeks until November 1st.  My plan is to watch 1 Tri movie per week and plan the chapter set in that movie that week.  This will leave me almost 3 weeks to go over the plan, make sure it’s cohesive, cut things, add things, etc.

Eimi’s “out of darkness” ultimate evolution arc will happen alongside Sora’s in Sōshitsu.  I’m thinking that the Kokuhaku and Sōshitsu chapters will have 2 updates (since those movies contain Koushiro’s and Eimi’s arcs), and the other chapters will have only 1.  The story will be between 40-50K words, I hope.  Readers of Growing Up with You will recognize my...  The thing where I write mostly through the lens of Koushiro and Eimi, with occasional input from the others.  

I plan to touch on and expand the following ideas:

Eimi searching for the 02 kids while the others believe Himekawa.

Eimi questioning Himekawa, her organization, and Meiko/Meicoomon, creating tension between her and the others.

Expansion on the digimon/humans politics issues.

Expanding of Meiko’s arc and motives, with heavy reduction of ‘comforting Meiko’ scenes (except for Mimi bonding with Meiko and Sora comforting her; I consider reduction of Sora a crime).

What happens to an infected Galemon?  How does Eimi react?  How does this further isolate her from Takeru and Meiko, who made different choices?

In general, Eimi is going to take issue with Meiko’s choices more than the others.  This, combined with her distrust of the organization and distress over the 02 kids and Ken/Kaiser, is going to make her an outsider and cause issues.

Lots of exploration and answers regarding the Glen, Justice, and anomaly issue.

I’m removing the “pervert Koushiro” stuff and changing the angle on “fashion disaster Koushiro” and “socially inept Koushiro.”  Basically, Tri Koushiro is going to feel a lot more like an older GUWY Koushiro.

Even more tension for Koushiro in Kokuhaku (sorry dude) as we add politics and distress over Eimi’s withdrawal to what he was already dealing with (sorry dude).

I was confused by Mimi and Koushiro fighting and never... resolving it (Mimi was briefly shown delivering tea for him as a peace offering, but after that, they didn’t react much in a meaningful way).  I want to explore Mimi and Koushiro’s argument and friendship.

Those are the things I know for now!  Thank you again to everyone who voted!  Apologies to those of you who weren’t in the majority, but I do hope I can get to everything someday.

What does it take to go viral?

Going viral means something different for each individual. For someone like Baker Mayfield (Go Browns), he’s used to getting hundreds of retweets and favorites on a single post. For someone like me, anything more than ten is a big deal and that’s usually because the places I tag in a post help me out.

Though, for someone trying to make it to the big leagues, Forbes gives a few tricks to practice. Not all of them will work for everyone, but if you play your cards right, you could be the next viral social media sensation.

Focus on high quality content before investing in advertising

Know your audience - Enough said.

Partner with influencers - Two words: #FyreFestival

Get your content reposted on popular accounts - All it takes is a retweet, favorite, or like from an account with a lot of followers. Think about the quality of your media post (picture, words, message) before positing if you’re hoping for it to catch the attention of these accounts that get thousands of messages/interactions a day.

Tell a relatable story through your account - If you ever think of Facebook viral posts, it’s often of a picture or a video with a long story that describes it. Individuals love that stuff. Sometimes it can be a heartwarming story; other times it is making sure individuals are aware of a negative trend, a missing person, etc. 

Keep it short and to the point - Twitter is great for this. A simple photo and 180 characters. Plus, humans have short attention spans so you don’t have much space for filler content.

Utilize interactive content - Instagram has taken this to a new level with improvements to its stories feature that allows individuals to ask open-ended questions, pose questions, etc.

The term viral comes from virus which is an infection. In the internet world, individuals become “infected” with emotion when they see information that they resonate with, and that causes them to do something with it. Individuals want to share items on social media because they hope for their followers to share similar emotions with them. Below are a few examples of the positive and negative effects of viral information.

The Good Kind of Viral

Who would have thought that a 98-year-old nun would take over the NCAA March Madness tournament over night and become a household sports name? For almost 30 years, Sr. Jean has been the chaplain of the Loyola University Chicago (Go Ramblers!) Men’s Basketball Team. She goes to every game, says a prayer, emails the players individually after each game, and makes sure the coaches know her thoughts. While she has been a sensation at the university, it took a few interviews made into social media posts during the 2018 tournament for her to become, in her humble opinion, “an international sensation.” By the time the Final Four came around, the university needed to send a separate security detail for her thanks to the internet, and she would have receiving lines at multiple events. She was even in a Super Bowl 2019 commercial for March Madness and was the only non-basketball player/coach featured in the 60 second clip. 

The Bad Kind of Viral

We’re used to seeing the good kind of viral as it sometimes becomes more memorable because of the emotions that it invokes in us. But that’s not always the case.

When I was in high school I remember seeing an article outside of a classroom with the following title:

I never read the article posted. I simply just read the title every morning when I would pass by. I remember thinking how sad that was...he seemed so young. I saw a few tweets with the same title over the course of that month. Flash forward a few years and I saw a live TV interview with Bill Nye. My mind was blown. “I definitely saw an article that said he was dead,” I told myself. Turns out, it was an article written by The Onion. If I had only looked at the source and done my research, I would have easily realized this viral message was indeed a hoax and wouldn’t have spent those two years thinking Bill Nye was a dead.

However, there are also bad virals that aren’t as funny. Take this professor who was trying to make a simple joke to her 60 followers but ended up reaching 25 million people. What sounded like good fun, turned into her receiving threats and criticism for not being understanding of those who experience death in their lives, especially her students. 

A similar thing happened to a supervisor of mine who tweeted something during the 2016 presidential election related to female inspirations running and being excited so that his daughters could see it. Someone who barely musters any followers outside of higher education and former students was now getting similar responses to this professor from individuals all over the country sending threats to him and his family. 

Think twice before hoping to be involved in viral content. And, if you’re trying to spread the content, double check your facts to make sure you aren’t spreading fake news!

Last month, I gave one of my favorite presentations at the 10th Biennial Pediatric Sleep Medicine Conference hosted by my alma mater, Brown University.

My “TED-style talk” had two key messages:

Prescribing social support to people with narcolepsy,

Partnering with patients, patient leaders and organizations to develop patient-centered research toward recognizing and addressing stigma.

I’d spent months preparing for this speech. Having only 18 minutes, every second mattered. I practiced and revised and revised more. Arriving at the conference, the room was much bigger than I’d expected, between 200-300 pediatric sleep researchers, doctors and technicians in the audience. 

Once on stage, I didn’t get through my material perfectly, but I hit the emotional arch I wanted and I articulated my first key messages in new ways that I believe resonated strongly.

The response was tremendous, people stopped me all weekend to thank me, even as I loaded my suitcases into my lyft the next day, a doctor approached me to say that she is going to change how she treats her patients because of my talk. Wow!

Also kinda funny, I overheard two doctors talking about me in the hallway (really nice things), and I had to awkwardly be like “Oh, um hi! I’m right behind you.”

To me, speaking is an art form and I’ve fallen in love with it, and I can’t wait to continue developing this talk and sharing these messages in more places.

From there, I traveled to Washington, D.C. for Project Sleep’s Congressional Briefing and Hill Day co-hosted with the Sleep Research Society (SRS). I felt ready for this advocacy day and the activities went super well.  I believe we are doing unique and important work advocating specifically for sleep health and sleep disorders research and awareness. While in DC, I got to meet some very special people, including Project Sleep’s newest Board Member, Anne Taylor and Project Sleep’s 2017 Jack & Julie Narcolepsy Scholarship recipient, Cassandra Stewart. I also had some important meetings that will likely mean exciting things for Project Sleep in the years to come. I can’t wait to share more, all in good time.

I know this might seem strange, but I truly feel like I’m becoming a new and better version of myself. This aura of calm confidence washed over this past month and I feel like I am operating from a higher place within me. (I cannot describe this perfectly but that’s my best try.)

I cannot thank each of you enough for your support along this path. I hope I can continue to make you proud and elevate our voices and stories, because I believe it is our voices and stories that have incredible power to impact change for good. And I believe we are on our way to a brighter future, together!

It’s been a long time between drinks, but today our Slack channel lit up with an interesting Ask the UXperts session led by Jorge Arango, author of Living in Information.

Jorge explained that over the past couple of decades we’ve been moving many of our key social interactions from the places where we have experienced them in the past — physical environments — to a new type of environment: one we enter through these “small glass rectangles we carry about in our pockets”.

In Jorge’s words, those of us who design these new “user experiences” have greater responsibility — and greater agency — than designers who’ve come before. Architects (the building type) are not form designers primarily. They help clients _frame the problem_. The client may know they want to build a shopping mall, but often lack the tools for defining what the _program_ for a shopping mall should be. That’s part of what we need to take on.

Here's the situation. Before I start here, I will say I have never sold a car/transferred insurance in my life until now (I'm 37) and I'm panicking. (Please don't laugh; I am somewhat mentally disabled and have a hard time understanding business side of things). Please bear with me: I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with 178,000 miles on it. Last Friday, my husband's brother decided to give his 2005 Hyundai Elantra (53,000 miles) to us as a free gift. We decided to sell the Malibu to some friends of ours (with whom we have been friends for quite a few years). My friends have already paid us and they have a Bill of Sale and next week we are getting a duplicate of the Chevy title in the mail (because we lost ours), at which time we will transfer. Here is where the confusion begins: My mother-in-law (who is a retired State Farm insurance agent) drew up a Bill of Sale that indicated as its last sentence at the end, Buyer will show proof of liability insurance at the time the car is received (or something like that; I don't have the Bill of Sale in front of me). We saw our friends today to get the Bill of Sale notarized (they already paid for the car; we're just waiting for the title for the Malibu to arrive via mail, as mentioned above). Their insurance agent is about 90 miles away, I find out, and will need pictures of the car. Our friends insist that my mother-in-law is just being a mom since we're new at such a transaction (our friends have owned and sold boats, cars, etc., so they are experienced at this, too), meaning that she's being overcautious by saying they need to present proof of liability insurance at the exact time I give them the keys to the car. So, once I give them the title and the keys, are they responsible for when they get the car insurance? My Hyundai is covered through my insurance agent (my mother-in-law called them and got coverage on it already), but she insists that I am not to get insurance verification on the Hyundai until the friends show proof of their insurance on the Malibu after they get possession of it. Is that correct, or is my mother-in-law just being overcautious? (I would think that once I switch the Malibu title to my friends' name and give them the keys, that would relieve me of any responsibility any longer to the Malibu). Help me, please. We're now looking at getting a second car as we will be working in different areas. My Grandma offered me her old Nissan Micra (1.3 ltr, K-reg) for us to have. I phoned up Quinn to get a quote for this car and they quoted 2,020!! I can't understand why it's so much more expensive, it's ridiculous! The lady I spoke to couldn't give me any adequate explanation of why it was so expensive, though she mentioned that we wouldn't be able to use a NCB on it as it would have to be an entirely new policy. But we took our first car policy with no NCB and that was a fraction of the price. Apparently the micra is called a Super-S or something, though it is not suped up or a fancy model or anything. I was in an accident last month in my brand new Volvo (not even a month old!). I was rear-ended, while I was at a stop sign. Damage is to the rear bumper, pretty bad, looks horrible...especially for a new car! No one was hurt, just shaken! We did not immediately file a police report. We exchanged information, and the the person who hit me told me that they would pay for my repairs out of pocket, and that they didn't want to get the police or insurance involved. We conversed on the phone for a few days, and they seemed like everything was going great, and I was supposed to meet them at their friends auto body shop for the repairs...long story short...they never showed. Bad part now is, I never got their insurance information, just license plate, DL, addresses(basically everything BUT insurance). That same day, I went to the police station and filed a delayed police report. Later that week, I went and got 3 different estimates, and the damage averages out to about $900. I contacted a friend of mine, who is a police officer, and they stated that I can issue a summons to the person who hit me for careless driving, and I will have to go to court. This is basically to show them that I'm not messing around. All I want is my BRAND NEW car fixed!!! I'm NOT going through my insurance because my deductible is $1,000, and the damage is less...not only that...it wasn't my fault! My insurance company advised me to have person who hit me's insurance take care of everything, at no cost to me. Here's what I need to find out...Can I send the person a demand letter, basically stating that I want them to have their insurance take care of everything? I have tried to call them, and they send me to voice mail, so reasoning is not an option any more. I don't really know how to go about this?! I want to try this on my own, and not get an attorney involved. I just want to tell them that if they fix my car, I will drop summons and further proceedings (like small-claims court, which I WILL sue for additional $$ for dealing with all this). Car Insurance query (involved in accident)?

Yesterday I was involved in an accident, I was stopped on the motorway when a car was going too fast crashed right into the back of me, pushing me into the van in front, the recovery guy who picked my vehicle up said it prob will be written off due to its age. My questions are: a - I am an additional named driver on the policy with direct line, the policy holder in my mum, we didn't select for courtsey car, and my friend seems to think that the person who crashed into me, his insurance company should provide me with one? And if so how do I go about this? b - I think I may have whiplash, my neck is extremley sore and I can't look to right and left without turining my whole body, I am going to doctor's tomorrow, do I get compensation for this as it said online you can claim loss of earnings but at the moment I am unemployed. I spoke to Direct Line who advised providing the man admits it was his fault (I can't see him not as it clearly was) then my mum won't loose her no claims. Thanks""

And one of the things i like the most, is how you connect the story / chapter with a musical concept that the concepts arent obvious/so known! About the story, i really like to see the struggles now, and what i would like to see happen is the characters really finding ways to make things work out for them. For me, thats what means seeking resonance -

Doesnt mean everything will end up fine and happy, but as long as you have hope, work, and lean on people everything will be fine. I dont know if this helps... Awuwuwuwu you are so sweet, thank you!  Your words are helping me to understand my own story more, lol XD  

What I’m starting to realize- and what is making me question the story so much- is that somehow, SR became sort of...  An essay on how I think romantic relationships should work between adults hidden beneath a story.  The emphasis is on my ideas about compatibility, what separates someone you’re dating from a life partner, and treating your partner with maturity and respect.  

But now that I’m a few years older, I realize that the individuals have to make things work on their own before they worry about compatibility and life partners.  Something in me is stepping away from emphasizing who ends up with whom and looking at the individuals and their problems, and now I’m struggling to find my story again.  Thankfully I have plenty of personal threads to follow for each character, but I’m trying to select the right ones and focus on individuals.

Which isn’t to say that the romance angle will vanish; the focus will shift, is all.  Thankfully, most of the characters are at low points where that shift will feel natural, I think?  

Anyway these messages are great and I appreciate them so much.  Thanks for helping me put my thoughts into words, that’s very helpful for me!  Thank you
