Since last friday, the central region of Chile has been struck by catastrophic wildfires that have destroyed entire neigbourhoods (most of them being working class and very low-resource) and left a death toll of 120, expected to grow during the week.

We also lost the entirety of the botanical garden which was considered to be the lungs of the city and harboured endangered species, along with the family that took care of gardening and the custody of the park.

Since I don't have the resources to help the way I'd love to, I feel like the least I can do is share what's happening and urge those who help to do so. So far the only NGO I know is able to receive help from abroad is Desafío Levantemos Chile, which was formed after the 2010 Earthquake and has been doing a great job since. They are 100% reliable and the website shows the way their resources are utilized.

do you know of any charities/sites/other options to make direct donations to families affected por los incendios or is techo chile the main organization accepting international donations? i have loved ones in valpo and viña and it’s heart breaking to see the damage—i’m trying to put together a resource to share options for donating on other platforms

The only other one i could spot is another cool nonprofit Desafío Levantemos Chile, which is focused on providing care packages and debris removal.

most of the sites that are being advertised for donations (the municipalities, Bomberos de Chile, Hogar de Cristo, Jardín Botánico de Viña, etc) are only taking them thru our national banks (Banco Estado - de Chile - Santander), so not really :( Have a list of their info anyway.

I'm from Chile, and personally I recommend going to the south of my country, as thats my favourite to visit!! Pucón is a very beautiful town, close to a lake (Villarica) and the snowy mountains nearby make it such a peaceful place surrounded by a forest (theres places for hiking! During winter theres snow closeby so you can do sports like skying and snowboarding, but currently thats not available). If you prefer deserts, then San Pedro de Atacama (VERY far away from Pucón btw. Like a few days by car, and its actually in the northern part of Chile) is a really interesting place, with Valle de la Luna, for example, as a great place to explore (tons of walking and beautiful natural places to see, such as caverns. You can see the stars clearly too, at night). Sorry for the rambling, I love my country a lot and would love to share some of its gorgeous landscapes!! Theres a LOT of other places with different types of flora and fauna, but these are just the first ones I thought of! :)

I love you and those places look stunning, especially san Pedro de atacama wow it looks gorgeous and that valley is somewhere I have never heard of before but looks incredible

Us American: 5 minutes between classes when I went to public High School. If you were late, you'd be written up. Probably given dentition. Lunch was "20" minutes. After standing behind dozens of kids. If you were across the building before your lunch period? You were shit of of luck. Kids had lunches as different hours based on schedules they didn't get any say in. No eating allowed in classes, so you could have lunch at 10 a.m. and have to wait well into 5/6 p.m. before eating again
