How bad writing affects the rest of a show...
I like soundtrack for first season of Shadow and Bone.
It's epic and tender, heartfelt and hopeful, simply beautiful. I diliked Joseph Trapanese's work on The Witcher, it doesn't fit together, but for this, his music is perfect.
I cannot listen to it.
I had hard time doing so after the end of first season. Alina's stubborn myopia made Hope for the Future sound like a joke. Her and Aleksander's themes intertwining paint a picture that’s no longer present on the screen. It felt like a heartbreaking deception. And not one the writers are trying to force down my throat.
After this season, after what the writers did with Aleksander's character, his- in books both sided- relationship with Alina, or their inhuman, stupid, better-than-anyone Saint... I cannot listen to a single track. It sounds like a cruel lie I cannot handle.
Even True North sounds horrible in context of Malina’s attraction being only about Malyen's amplification and their ensuing rape-y sexual relationship.

obsessed with the fact that pete has to. not crouch down? but like bend his knees to be even close to eye level with steph. its cute. its very very cute. plays into the whole "seeing eachother for who they are, as equals despite being on very different tiers of the highschool social hierarchy. love wins."

Though I'm forever drawn to the insane chemistry and comedic timing of Craig Ferguson and his first (and reoccurring) guest David Duchovny, there's something very magical about Craig taking shots at David's fashion and David then setting Craig up for a gag:
(Compilation of these two that I watch over and over like a movie found here.)

if you like rewatching tv shows an ungodly number of times, may i recommend doing a rewatch of only episodes a particular character is in
especially fun if they’re properly missing (in a coma, dead, out of town, in another dimension) from the show for any significant period
(you get to see the character arc without gaps and you can get randomly dropped in the middle of series like wow this would be weird without context huh)

this will be my last post about the 100 and my rewatch for a little while because I'll just rant in the tags of edits from now on unless I have to vent lol
clarke was willing to let her own mother die in 3x15 because she wouldn't give the pass phrase to the flame but in s4 she couldn't kill bellamy to save the human race. she literally couldn't live without him and I'm sobbing!! but yeah it makes total sense she could kill him in s7 to save madi sure jason.
bellamy loved clarke and clarke loved bellamy it was obvious af to anyone with eyes! if you think they weren't in love you are in denial! bob and eliza themselves confirmed it along with the fact they were supposed to be endgame so!!

sonic liking the chili dog is NOT NEARLY as famous or recognizable as like. the teenage mutant ninja turtles liking pizza. or spongebob and the krabby patty. like if you asked a guy whos never played sonic before what sonics favorite food was they wouldnt fuckin know. 'cause its like. not necessarily an inside joke but its exclusive to one or two lines per game. mentioned like twice in both movies total. non sonic fans dont even know there are comics so thats a whole separate deal. i dont even think x sonic likes chili dogs more than any other human food. but if u asked someone what the turtles favorite food is? pizza. thats a no brainer. like asking someone who goku is. cmon.

I've seen a lot of discourse on sad/tragic endings, but not enough about ambiguous endings. Ambiguous endings are advanced maneuvers and should not be tried by authors who are not extremely in control of the material. The difference between good writing and bad writing: good writing will be intentionally ambiguous, bad writing will be unintentionally ambiguous.
Good writers may have answered all of the questions before the end so they don't need to have an ending, or perhaps they wanted the reader to think deeply about the meaning of endings in fiction, and how they don't exist in real life. Good writers will stealthily hide questions in the text to keep the reader interested and hooked. Yeah you know Macbeth is a murderer twenty minutes into the play, but you just have to know how no man born of woman is going to kill him and how a forest is going to walk half way across the country. Those were questions the author put in our minds in the opening scene of the play.
Bad writing will plant questions and forget to answer them, or worse PRETEND to have answered them. Bad writing leaves you wondering what the fuck just happened and not in a 'oh jeez this is so exciting' way but in a 'make it make sense' kind of way. It makes you angry because it is inconsistent, not in the way that LIFE is inconsistent, but in the way that a lazy, disorganized writer is inconsistent. Bad writing creates an in-universe rule, breaks it and then never revisits that break with the rule, just carries on like it never happened. Bad writing often ends in a big unexpected twist because the writer thinks that if they come up with a good enough one, people will forget about how much the rest of it was inconsistent, ambiguous and generally pretty shit. I'm not talking about ACD forgetting the details of Watson's war injury, I'm talking about if Doyle forgot he had war injuries altogether and turned him into an action hero with zero mention of how it might be kind of hard for him to do stunts with his injuries...
So I think a lot of writers pick an ambiguous ending because they can't come up with a good twist or worse, think that being ambiguous is edgy--that an open ending IS the twist.
The ending of the story is a payoff, a literal reward for getting there for the reader and it is a sacred trust. It is not to be scoffed at. Readers most of the time will expect it and will be kind of pissed off if you don't deliver. And not being able to think of a good payoff is not an excuse for an ambiguous ending. That's bad writing.

we've been rewatching Digimon lately, and have recently gotten to Frontier. we were thinking "oh, maybe it's not as bad as we remember, maybe the fact that it came after Tamers colored our perception of its quality." we even started watching it before Tamers, just in case. it's bad. there is so much potential here. there's so many ideas that we like. but it's bad.
