What Is Rumba And How To Dance The Rumba Basic?

Before you can dance you need to understand how to count the Rumba. The basic Rumba rhythm is “Slow, Quick, Quick” – Where the Slow gets 2 beats and each Quick is 1 beat. Make sure to hold the slows to ensure that you stay on time with the music and your partner.

Rumba Dance Step #1: The Box Step:

The Rumba Box step is one of the most used steps in the American Rumba. Imagine you have a box in front of you, now just step on the corners of the box. Make sure you change weight every time.

Rumba Dance Step #2: The side basic step:

This is another fundamental basic step of the Rumba. It consists of 6 steps total. Start by stepping to the side and then bring the leg to close and then make 2 changes of weight in place. Repeat on the other side.

Rumba Dance Step #3: The CrossOver Breaks

The Crossover breaks in Rumba is a very nice step because it opens up the space between the partners. Both partners switch hands as they open up to right and left – extending the opposite hands.

How To Do Basic Foxtrot Steps?

The basic elements of foxtrot are walking steps and side steps. The long walking movements also involve a rise & fall action, which is similar to waltz, although more subtle. The basic box step is also similar to waltz steps – the main difference being timing (foxtrot is 4/4, waltz is 3/4). If you already know how to waltz, then learning foxtrot will be just a matter of rhythm.

The basic rhythm is slow, slow, quick, quick. The slow steps use 2 beats of music and the quick steps use one. The slow steps are long and elegant, and the quick steps are short and energetic. As already mentioned, the music is played in 4/4 timing.

Foxtrot is danced in a normal closed position, which means facing your partner and holding them close.
