Hi ABL! I saw the trailer for Addicted Heroin is out. Would you recommend watching the original before the Thai remake? Do you anticipate it being hard to follow without having watched the original first? Thanks!!

I think it'll be fine not to have seen the original.

It's a Thai remake, and prior experience suggests they are more likely to add to the original story (or stick more closely to the yaoi) and render it easier to understand.

(Not that the original addicted is complicated.)

So you should be perfectly fine just watching it... if it's good.

The Thai Love Stage is my favorite of that entire adaptation suite. (It got an anime and a JBL, plus I read the original - I still think the Thai BL version is best.)

All that said.

Addicted is, without any question the best BL (AS A BL) that China has EVER produced.

Or, likely, will ever produce.

It's truly stellar in acting, trope use, filming style, staging. It's a genuinely quality product. You can really see where Taiwanese BL owes it's roots, especially if you enjoyed soemthing like Unknown.

So yes, I think you should watch it. It's on Viki.

My only tip is, since it's unfinished, build your own satisfying ending into it (if these things are important to you) and just STOP watching it DIRECTLY after THE sex scene.

You will know it when you see it.

I still don't accept Earth playing the main (senior) lead for Ossan's Love. Don't get me wrong, I love EarthMix. I just think he deserves better than always being casted as significantly older gay when he is not THAT old. C'mon, GMMTV. Bring out the real daddies.

So, I think there are some extenuating circumstances here. After the first episode of Ossan’s Love Thailand, a large portion of fans of the original decided to boycott the remake because the writers cut a single line they apparently felt was necessary to the plot. The line in question? “I know you love big tits, but how about a big dick instead?”

Full disclosure: I have not seen the original and cannot make comparisons either way, but I do feel that this was probably just a poor choice of series to adapt. The whole sexual harassment thing being played for laughs is a bit triggering for me personally and I feel like that might be putting some people off, which is unfortunate because the HengMo plot is great and this might be my favorite role of Earth’s ever. He really excels at comedy.

Regardless, to use the success of Ossan’s Love to make any preemptive judgments about Cat for Cash is ridiculous. Even if Ossan’s Love turns out to be a flop, P’Au is also responsible for My School President, which is probably the most popular GMMTV BL since 2gether. I think P’Au has simply been handicapped by being given the Japanese adaptations to direct. (I also think he’s being given them specifically because he is the newest director at GMMTV and no one else wants them.) Adaptions—especially cross-cultural ones—are hard and they are also frustrating for creators because it feels like you’re not getting to showcase your own work, but someone else’s.

We’re only three weeks into Ossan’s Love, though. Both viewship and trends should continue to increase the longer the show goes on. And it’s also relevant to note that Mix is actively liking posts every week telling people not to stress about trending and I think the fandom has taken that to heart and aren’t trying to artificially inflate their engagement numbers. After all, watching these shows is supposed to be fun. Not a full-time job.
