Mmm this may just be me being oldmanyellsatcloud.jpeg.webp but I feel like there's a tangible difference between text abbreviations and tone indicators.

First of all, "omg" has been in recorded use for well over a century, and even "lol" dates to the 1980s. A lot of text abbreviations have overlapping meanings (see: lol, lmao, lmfao, rotfl) to the point where just seeing the letter "L" gives you a decent guess as to its meaning. Other abbreviations are fairly easily deduced from context (e.g. "gotta take a call, brb").

When the meaning of a text abbreviation isn't easily deducable, then the meaning of the whole sentence can't be confidently parsed. For example, if you have never encountered this abbreviation before, the phrase, "why don't you kys" is incomprehensible. It requires googling to understand, and until you do that googling, you know that you don't understand it.

Conversely, if you have never encountered tone indicators and someone writes, "Why don't you kill yourself? /j" (or is it "/s"? or "/nsrs"?) you are already being presented with a complete, intelligible sentence. The tone indicator changes its entire meaning, but if you don't already know that, how would you even know that you don't know it?

In this sense tone indicators are, grammatically, unnecessary. Unlike abbreviations that substitute for real words, tone indicators are extraneous modifierz that are expected to be understood, but not required to be understood in order for an idea to be communicated (it may be the wrong idea, but it gets communicated nonetheless). In conclusion:

I'm about to throw stones but when people my age say "I don't like these Gen Z teenage tone indicators. How am I supposed to MEMORIZE all these new abbreviations? '/nm'? '/lh'? I hate it." it sounds utterly indistinguishable from our parents being like "I don't get this text speak. 'omg'? 'lol'? SAY what you mean! Don't abbreviate!" Like I dunno how to tell you that evolving language involves... learning the evolved parts of language.

I understand like 4 tone indicators and I'm frequently confused but I support it. It's honestly a good solution to tone lost over text imo. I'm ancient and my bones are full of dust but I'll figure it out.
