I've been on the Kairi Support Squad since the KH1 days so I'm cheering for her, but I gotta say it is also morbidly funny to me how out of the 7 or so total named & plot-relevant non-disney/FF female characters in all of KH, there's only maybe 2 who aren't contenders for this bracket??

Kairi's already covered, but Naminé? In the way of both SoRiku and AkuRoku, saved only because her story was tragic. Larxene? In the way of basically any M/M Org13 ship, often reduced to a Bitchy Lesbian stereotype. Xion? Torn to shreds before Days was even out for getting in the way of AkuRoku, saved only because her story was Extremely tragic. Aqua? Got less hate due to being the first properly playable female character (which was then used as an excuse to hate on the other girls), but still considered in the way of TerraVen. Ironically, I distinctly remember people worrying about Terra getting in the way of AkuRoku back before we knew Ven was a new character lmao

Credit where it's due, the KH fandom HAS improved a bit over the years — I don't think I've seen much hate for Streletzia or Skuld, for example, and by KH3 there were a lot more people cheering for the girls to return than I would've Ever expected back in the day. But man, even the series itself shoves poor Kairi aside in favor of the boys, which just fuels the hate and means I am Still in the goddamn trenches. Nomura come here I just wanna talk about Melody of Memory :))))

Okay, so this is a call for a beta reader that is nice and patient as I write a beast of a Kingdom Hearts fanfic. It’s an AU (no major age gaps) that takes place mainly in the 1980s. Theory: Your best friends have been lying to you, Ven.

I haven’t seen anyone talking about this but I feel like the game is screaming something at us that gives us insight into Ven’s arc for the future: Ven’s friends have been lying to him ever since he arrived on Eraqus’ doorstep.

In the opening of BBS, we very clearly see Norty Nort bringing Ven to Destiny Islands, wearing a white shroud, having a broken heart, and no light in his eyes. A voice merges itself with Ven to fix the broken part of his heart, and Ven then produces Wayward Wind. We see later in flashbacks that when Ven refused to produce what Xehanort wanted, he dumped him on Eraqus, at which point Terra accidentally “breaks” him with too many questions Ven cannot answer. Ven falls asleep for a long while before finally waking up, much to Terra’s relief, the poor jock probably thought he killed him lol. Following the opening scene we have Ven and Aqua talking during the meteor shower, and she has this weird throwaway line in which she says “Except you’ve always lived here with us.” after Ven tells her he used to live somewhere else.

This line does not make sense. We clearly see that Ven has not, in fact, always lived there with them, but more likely has only been there for a year or 2 at most. At first glance, this throwaway line sounds like just a casual mistake, an inconsistency, but ignorable enough not to matter. However, I have a little more faith in Nomura’s care to follow consistency in his own lore than that. This is someone who went out of his way to explain why Mickey is missing his shirt in kh1. It’s also not an inconsistency. Terra subtly implies the same thing as well while handing Ven his toy keyblade, quite literally giving him a dream to follow. Ven is broken in this scene. He has no dreams. Terra made this up. This brings me to my next point.

Terra and Aqua have been lying to Ven to keep him from breaking. The lack of memories and broken heart have left Ven mostly a zombie, not unlike Roxas in the early days of his existence. Unlike Roxas (as far as we know) though, Ven has a heart, but it is simply not fully functioning due to his memory loss. If lacking memories are the problem, Terra and Aqua have decided to invent memories for him as a solution. This is a morally grey decision that they have made for the sake of Ven’s health and that creates a very complicated and meaningful issue.

When Ven is brought to Destiny Islands from wherever Norty Nort found him, he is more or less dead. I’ve talked in another post about how a person in KH is made up of a soul, a heart, and a body. Ven debuts in a similar zombie state to Roxas because although he does still HAVE a heart, it is not functioning because it is broken. He is practically a Nobody, lacking any connections and his heart only being “whole” enough to summon a key blade. Ven has to rebuild his heart over time the way nobodies like Roxas do if they wish to start fresh. (Off topic but yes, I am a believer that Roxas is actually Ven’s nobody 8)) Anyway, back to the lies.

Aqua suggesting Terra plant this dream within Ven too. (According to the novel, Terra already intended on doing this, but its kind of Aqua to set him up like this~).

I suspect Terra is the one who suggested just lying to Ven. Aqua is going along with it as we see, and Eraqus probably is too given that he won’t even let Ven leave the house, so whatever keeps the darknesses seeking Ven at bay, so be it. But since Terra is the most willfully ethically grey person in the house, and clearly felt guilty about breaking Ven by asking too many questions in the first place, I rather assume he proposed this idea in the first place. Whether it was or not, Terra’s support of Ven in particular appears to have affected Ven the most. It is Terra who “plants” a new dream in Ven’s heart. It is Terra’s bequeathing of the dream to become a key blade wielder in Ven’s heart that puts the light in his eyes where they were otherwise empty.

Note his eyes having no light before taking Terra’s blade, and then gaining light by the time he is reminiscing about it in the present of the main story.

Aqua does not want to see Ven dead asleep again. This clearly worried her, as it would anyone with a caring heart. Certainly she did not want to see this happen again. Given how much she is shown to care for Ven throughout the games and novels, it is no stretch to think she’d be willing to do what is necessary to keep Ven from breaking again. Regardless of whose idea it was to lie, Aqua is the one we see following it right from the start, even before Terra does. “You’ve always lived here with us.” Is a complete lie out of love.

HOWEVER. HERE IS WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING.

Terra and Aqua’s LOVE for Ven was NOT a lie. The lies they told him provided a shoddy backstory, and a dream he didn’t outright choose to have, (at least not since he lost his Union Cross memories). But the lies did NOT include their love for him. Their love for him is genuine. This is emphasized in many ways but in particular shots like these, where Terra’s hand is on Ven’s shoulder, very actively trying to comfort him, emphasized by the camera.

and where Terra hears Ven’s loving words of support and visibly feels comforted by it.

We also see Aqua tell us of her own lonely accord, that it is Ven that keeps her going in the dark realm. 12 years of this wandering and she relies on memories of Ven to keep going.

We also see her resolve to love and protect him when Yensid explains that Ven needs this to be his path back home.

But perhaps most importantly:

Terra was prepared to betray, and to fight, his own father figure to the DEATH for Ven’s sake. To protect him. Even only knowing him for a brief period.

Ven means THAT much to these 2. They may have told him lies, but their loving him was the sincerest of truths.

Ven is anywhere between 15-17 by now, citing that if he’s roughly Sora’s age as reflected by Roxas, he’s 15 or so by kh2, but Nomura’s non-canonical guess in that tweet that people throw in my face constantly is that he’s 16 in bbs, which would make him older than Sora who is around 15 in kh2, and thus 17 in kh3′s REmind... and 0 about these things is factual cuz no one’s age is relevant to the canon and when Nomura tries to suggest an age, he’s never consistent, so-

Ven’s age is up in the air most of all lol especially since his heart was awake in Sora’s for 10 years which means you could even argue he’s older, on top of being maybe hundreds of years older if you factor in the time travel, or ignore it as I would since he doesnt seem to be affected in the heart by those years....

Ven hates it when aqua treats him like a kid. It reminds him of when xehanort first split his heart. He doesn't ever want to feel that way again so sometimes he goes a little overboard on training. Some days terra has to literally throw him over his shoulder to get him to take breaks.

It’s even worse now, isn’t it? Because the small children he’d seen before weren’t children anymore. They were his age. One of them was his age and a master. Sora, baby Sora, had learned skills Ventus didn’t have, had been through more, seen more, lived more, than he had. And there’s another guy who’s replaced Ventus, who can wield two keyblades and has a history with these people, these people who Ventus had known far before them but had been separate from all their lives.

He doesn’t fit anymore. Everyone else has surpassed him, even the kids. He isn’t needed. He has no place. Shunted to the side, not quite part of the group, but included because they’re supposed to be there, they were supposed to be important to these peoples’ lives.

And then Aqua treats him like a child, and it’s all he can do not to scream.

Sometimes he’s not even the only one. Sometimes Terra, also not a master, has to tear into something, beat something up, because the protege he was supposed to train surpassed him long before he could ever help guide Riku forward. They were both gone, and they’d both ended up being forgotten.

But sometimes, when Terra’s muscles are aching and burning beneath his skin, he would turn and find Ventus still pressing on, his face cherry red, his mouth open to suck in gasps so hot they had to freeze his throat, sweat rolling down his back as his lips turned chapped from lack of water. And he pushes away his own pain and frustration and goes to Ven’s side. One hand on Ven’s shoulder, and the instant Ven stops, he nearly collapses.

Terra picks him up, happy to hurt his own muscles a little longer. He doesn’t bother speaking, ignores Ven’s breathless complaints. He takes Ven to the shower, and they’re too tired to care about propriety or even, sometimes, about their clothes. They stand under the spray until their sweat doesn’t feel like it’s forming a new lines of skin, and then they collapse on the nearest sofa and sleep curled up together, careful of their bruised muscles.

Sometimes they wake up and do it all over again. Sometimes they play video games. Sometimes they sit at the breakfast table in silence, Aqua nervously looking between the two of them, not certain what’s wrong or how to help, but afraid something she might say or do could rush them back out to that training ground. Sometimes, very rarely, they sit in the middle of the throne room. Sometimes Aqua joins them, and they all stare at the thrones as if they were miles away, pictures on a screen.

Sometimes Aqua joins them in their training.
