Hey everyone,

'The New ThoughtCrime' is an anti-trans community detransitioner essay

Just wanted to give a heads up to the FTM community on here that a user named @mewthoughtcrime is trying to repost the 'New ThoughtCrime' think piece from 2017 - tagging it with this such as 'trans man', 'nonbinary' and 'transandrophobia'.

However this blog fails to mention that the main author of said piece is a lesbian who considers herself a detransitioner. While there is nothing at all wrong with that -

the problem more comes from the fact that said author also believes the trans community is a cult.

This quote comes from the author's interview with Genspec - an organization that pretends to be trans supportive, while also believing trans kids are a myth, trans men are just confused teen girls, and pushing the book Irreversible Damage.

The author also believe in the idea of 'cotton-cieling' - a terf dog whistle that implies trans women intend to force lesbians to sleep with 'males who identify as lesbians'.

The think piece is NOT at all about trans men or transandrophobia.

It's about detransitioning from a woman who believes the trans community engages in 'thought reform' - in a way akin to cults.

The piece reads largely inspired by 'Irreversible Damage' - an anti-FTM shred-piece. This is basically J.K Rowling ideology.

They're in their right to repost whatever they want, especially if that piece of writing specifically spoke to them and other detransitioning folk.

However I do think it's incredibly disingenuous and sneaky to not include this information - or the true nature and intention of the work - in the Tumblr post, as the original author was very clear in stating so.

To post such a piece without tagging the detrans community is a disservice to them and a deliberate choice towards us.

The piece is not at all about transandrophobia - the OP is simply mistagging it to target particular groups - mainly, actively transitioning FTM who are looking for community.

This isn't to say you can't read and enjoy the piece, or connect to it. You absolutely can, it's about someones valid personal experience (well - some parts.) that's eloquently written.

What I do not support however is posting such material, purposely and vaguely mistagging it, while not explaining the contents, the context, and the intent of the author clearly.

I believe readers should always be informed about the source and intention of the writers of the information they received.

People should be allowed to make informed choices about what they read and involve themselves in - whether that be trans politics, or reading think pieces online.

That's why I am making this post.

'The New ThoughtCrime' is an Anti-Trans Community think-piece that targets trans men and lesbians by supporting TERF ideology.

Read with that information in mind. With the situation going on now with staff, I think it's important to be on high alert for indoctrination or misleading literature like this.

By all means, read if you like. I was just not at all impressed with the lack of transparency from @mewthoughtcrime when it comes to detailing the actual contents and source of that information.

It's one thing to call the trans community a cult - before turning around and releasing anonymous faceless think-pieces that you spread around without sources or actively informing others of its contents, in order to purposely get a demographic of people who do not wish to interact with you to unwillingly engage in your rhetoric.

As a essay that calls for 'transparency in the trans community' we can first start by lending some transparency to THIS essay.

In my observations:

Very few TERFs are actually male separatists. Almost all the ones in the public eye are absolutely not. You occassionally find some of the tiny percentage who talk up separatism right here on tumblr, but that's because tumblr is a place where people constantly drop extreme, supposedly radical, and mostly bullshit ideas.

2. That means you will notice that while TERFs talk a lot about how abusive men are the reason why they have to persecute trans women, they actually do not hate most of the men in their lives. They usually live their life just as surrounded by men as the average cis woman, and do not wish otherwise.

3. TERFs see trans women as men, but they also place them in a certain category- they are both cis men but also not at all like cis men. They would vastly prefer the company of a cis man. Especially one who they suspect would never, ever remind them of the trans women they hate. This is why you see them becoming suspicious of the slightest sign of gender nonconformity in the men around them. I literally saw a woman on mumsnet stressing because her husband wore nail polish. People were telling her to be careful in case he transitions. (How odd because at one point they were going on about how 'oh dress however you want just don't try and call yourself a woman/man!')

4. This is my clumsy attempt to explain why while blanket hatred of men on principle is obviously not unrelated to transmisogyny, in practice it's in my opinion pretty misguided to assume that cis men as a category are the focus of TERFs.

if you lean into or join in with misogynist jokes and threats as a trans man or transmasc because you pass as cisgender or are "man enough" to the person/people who are talking that way you are a traitor to the trans demographic as a whole. if you're scared of being outed and assaulted due to standing up for those affected by misogyny, sex or gender based, then don't say anything. keep your mouth shut. make it clear you're uncomfortable or glare at them or roll your eyes but if you can call it out, do it. do anything besides giving into misogynistic behavior under a misguided attempt at acceptance. if those men making the jokes and threats knew you were AFAB and/or you had any stereotypically "physically feminine" traits (long hair, breasts, makeup, etc) they would target you the same as they would anyone else they deemed acceptable.

there's nuance here, obviously, but the cis men making cruel and misogynistic threats and "jokes" will not see you as a man if you're outed. you are not allying yourself with people who will protect you. you are allying yourself with people who would hurt you if you were alone and they/he was fairly sure they/he could get away with it, and even then sometimes you don't need to be alone and it'll happen anyway. people will look the other way. the legal system protects rapists. law enforcement protects rapists. the other cis men will protect rapists. ask me how i know.

don't become someone who protects that behavior. believe that you're better than them, because you are, and put that treatment beneath you. is what they have to offer really worth whatever acceptance you may see in their eyes? why do you want their acceptance and approval at all?

Idk if this is just a Tumblr thing but it makes me so sad that there are so many lesbian TERFs. Like lesbian history is full of so many amazing trans, nonbinary and gnc people and to shit on the people that got your community to where it is is heartbreaking! Just went through a block-fest of a bunch of terf/"radical feminist" blogs like I do sometimes. and like. man.

their whole ideology is so fucking miserable. like, I knew we knew this already - if you perceive the world as entirely out to get you except for a particular group of conforming, morality policing internet weirdos, then yeah you're gonna feel pretty shitty about the world and your place in it. but even with that, there are multiple reblogs of ongoing discourse and piss-fights over the smallest aspects of life and of their beliefs. some terfs are "homophobic" and this is "bad," but their entire belief is based on demonizing a certain sect of queerness so I guess you only care about "your" queerness? how can you claim to be for all women when you're also infested with homophobes? more than that, how can you be upset at that when you've advertised yourselves as incredibly -phobic in general?

and then there was one terf was being ridiculed for saying she would still like men around because she's attracted to them, and got bodied by like 3 different people. and idk man I feel like if you can't have a sexuality in the antiqueer, fascist, self-policing cult group maybe you shouldn't be surprised by that. you've been trying to deny other people their own personal freedoms for however long now did you not think it would happen to you too?

Love how my sibling is both non binary and also one of the biggest TERFs I have ever had the displeasure of speaking to. They just screamed at me for twenty minutes because I said I don't like Harry potter. Didn't even say a thing about jk Rowling. I remember she even made an "apology" a while ago that was full of TERF dog whistles.
