Vice President Kamala Harris’ emphatically raised voice demanding we must “have the courage to object when they use the term ‘Radical Islamic Terrorism?’” rings in my ears.  In what world is that  “courage”?
It was radical Islamic terrorists who blew up the Twin Towers and destroyed thousands of American lives. It was radical Islamic terrorists who crossed Gaza into Israel and broke the country’s heart and caused the most heinous of acts that they, the Islamist terrorists proudly filmed on their bodycams.
And the terrorist adjacent chanting “from the river to the sea Palestine will be free Yitbach El Yahud” crashes into our world here on the streets of Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco. “Hamas is coming” in blood red paint on monuments in DC is not just a “protest” of a very unpopular Israeli Prime Minister.
There is no question Jews are between a rock and a hard place. We have for the most part been proud liberals. I remain a proud liberal. But I will never vote against Israel. Never again is now.
If this country is not one hundred percent behind Israel and resists putting the burden of Gazan suffering on Hamas and Radical Islamist Terrorists and Iranian and Qatar funded terrorism, the Democratic party we have supported is a sham.
“Americans are naive,” Granny said when I talked with her so long ago. But I no longer think it’s naivete. Its delusional self interest and arrogance not to recognize evil. Hamas is nothing more than a monstrous murderous death cult ready to kill all its people in the service of its paymaster, Iran. It should not be that hard to understand that Iran plans much more than Bin Laden’s pilots could ever do.
“Anti-Zionist” chants marching down major cities in America echo Islamic threats against Jews. Terrifying protests on college campuses and cities across America  scream for Israel’s demise, raise Hamas flags and burn American flags, glorify terrorism and normalize anti-Zionism, the Jew hatred of our time.
Denial of life under Islam is astounding despite common knowledge that gay people are not allowed to be free in Islamic countries, and caught being gay means being thrown off rooftops in Tehran, raped with iron rods (if you are a man) and dragged through the streets of Gaza, and hung on telephone poles in the Palestinian Territories. There are no open gay people in Palestine. They flee for their lives to Tel Aviv.
You have to wonder how a progressive community I briefly felt safe in once upon a time, hates Israel, the only safe space for queer men and women, and are mum on Iran, poster child of oppression of women, murder and torture of gays, literally cloaking the country in black.
The Orwellian Progressive idealization of monsters who started a war in the most brutal of ways and continue the war by horrifically using its own in every way possible, using its own women men and children, as many of them as it takes, all of Gaza if need be, as human ammunition to get rid of Jews and Israel is mind boggling stuff.
Granny, you were right. Bin Laden’s rag tag jihadis were here then plowing into the Twin Towers. And it isn’t just “naivete,”on the part of people who refuse to see.  It’s denial, a sick arrogance, a cynical dance by our politicians, an ease from having lived too well too easily in the best country for too long, and a very old antisemitism.

🇮🇷🇵🇸🇮🇱 🚨 IRANIAN PRESIDENT EBRAHIM RAEISI CONDEMNS ISRAELI GENOCIDE AND WAR CRIMES AGAINST THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
Speaking during a telephone conversation with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani on Saturday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi condemned Israel's genocidal treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank since last Saturday's attack inside Israeli territory launched by Hamas and other Palestinian Resistance groups saw at least 1'300 Israelis killed and many more wounded.
During his telephone call with the Qatari Emir, President Raeisi condemned the constant Israeli bombing of civilian targets in the Gaza strip and called for an end to Tel Aviv's genocide of the Palestinian people.
“The Zionist leaders’ statements and actions in recent days are an obvious example of war crimes and genocide in flagrant violation of all international treaties,” the Iranian president said.
President Raeisi further stressed that the occupying entity’s war crime machine must be stopped as soon as possible.
Further, President Raeisi blamed the United States and other Western allies of Israel for its war crimes and holds the West responsible for atrocities being committed against the Palestinians by Israeli Occupation Forces.
“The situation in Palestine is a clear proof of contradictory and hypocritical positions of the Westerners who are claiming to defend human rights,” the Iranian President added.
“Operation Al-Aqsa Storm showed that no order can be established in the region without taking into account the rights of the Palestinian nation. The Zionists’ crimes must be pursued in international bodies.”
The Iranian President further connected Hamas' operation, coined Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which was launched on Saturday, October 7th with the last 75 years of "occupation, humiliation and desecration" of the sanctities of the Palestinians, and noted that the younger generation of Palestinians have risen up to demand their Rights.
“The leaders of the Zionist regime are seeking to avenge their humiliating and historic defeat on the battlefield on the defenseless people of Gaza by cutting off water and electricity [to the coastal sliver], preventing the entry of food and medicines, and using prohibited weapons such as phosphorous bombs,” he asserted.
For his own part, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani focused on the need for cooperation in ending the Zionist regime's war crimes in Gaza and uphold the Rights of Palestinians.
The Qatari Emir pointed to the media, saying to the Iranian President that Western media outlets try to show a "false and reversed image of regional developments" despite a global awakening supporting Palestinian Rights.
The Qatari Sheikh went on to focus on the fact the regional stability will not be possible until the Rights of the Palestinian people are upheld.
Iranian President Raeisi responded by pointing to the resilience of the Palestinian people, “If oppression and aggression could silence the Palestinians' call for rights, it would have happened in the past 75 years.”

Telefon Tel Aviv — Immolate Yourself (2009)
Tumblr media

💥 … on April 30, 2024!! ... Will these arrest warrants really happen? — I’m not holding my breath!!
By: LaillaB, founder of ‘Reclaim the Narrative’, from LinkedIn …
“The Israeli Foreign Ministry has alerted its embassies globally to brace for potential repercussions if the International Criminal Court (ICC) issues arrest warrants against Israeli officials for alleged war crimes and human rights violations in Gaza.
In a statement released Sunday evening, the ministry addressed "rumors" surrounding the possibility of ICC arrest warrants targeting "senior Israeli political and military figures."
Amid these "rumors," Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz reportedly directed all Israeli embassies to prepare immediately for a surge in “anti-Semitic” and “anti-Israeli” events.
Katz also instructed the involvement of Jewish organizations abroad in readiness for these events, including coordinating security enhancements around Jewish institutions with local authorities.
He said Israel "expects the court to refrain" from issuing arrest warrants.
Israel fears arrest warrants being issued against senior military and government leaders, foremost among them Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for its ongoing aggression in the.
Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
An interim ruling in January from the world court, ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided…. Flour massacre.
According to reports in several Israeli media, the US is part of a last-ditch diplomatic effort to prevent the ICC from issuing arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials.
In the news site Walla, analyst Ben Caspit writes that Netanyahu is “under unusual stress” over the prospect of an arrest warrant against him and other Israelis by the UN tribunal in The Hague, which would be a major deterioration in Israel’s international status. F
Netanyahu is leading a “nonstop push over the telephone” to prevent an arrest warrant, focused especially on the administration of US President Joe Biden, Caspit writes.
Haaretz analyst Amos Harel writes that the Israeli government is working under the assumption that the ICC’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, may this week issue warrants for the arrest of Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.
Netanyahu’s latest public statement about the war said forthcoming decisions by the ICC could set a “dangerous precedent.”
“We will never stop defending ourselves. Whereas decisions of the court in the Hague will not affect Israel’s actions, they would be a dangerous precedent threatening the soldiers and officials of any democracy fighting criminal terrorism and aggression,” he said on Friday.
Israeli research and professor of Holocaust history at the Hebrew University in Al Quds, Amos Goldberg, has said that “Israel is committing genocide in Gaza … It’s so difficult and painful to admit it, but despite all that … we can no longer avoid this conclusion.
Jewish history will be henceforth stained” ... Nuremberg 2.0 …

UK PM tells Netanyahu Middle East escalation is in no one’s interest
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak urged his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to show restraint and allow “calm heads” to prevail in the wake of Iran’s missile attacks, as Foreign Secretary David Cameron landed in Tel Aviv for talks on Wednesday.
In a telephone conversation, Sunak reiterated Britain’s “unwavering support” for regional stability and told the Israeli leader that Iran had miscalculated its actions, leaving it isolated on the world stage.
The Israeli minister reportedly thanked Britain for its “swift and decisive” support in the face of Iran’s unprecedented direct attack on Israel on Saturday. Downing Street said in a readout of the call on Tuesday evening:
“The Prime Minister [Sunak] said Iran had badly miscalculated and was increasingly isolated on the global stage, with the G7 coordinating a diplomatic response. He stressed that significant escalation was in no one’s interest and would only deepen insecurity in the Middle East. This was a moment for calm heads to prevail.”
Referring to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Sunak told Netanyahu that he remains gravely concerned about the deepening humanitarian crisis.

The US is involved in a diplomatic effort to prevent the International Criminal Court (ICC) from issuing an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Hebrew media reports. Haaretz analyst Amos Harel said on 28 April that Washington is “already” engaged in efforts to block the ICC warrant against Netanyahu. The prime minister is reportedly in a state of extreme anxiety over the matter. Israeli journalist Ben Caspit wrote that Netanyahu is “under unusual stress” over the possibility of an arrest warrant being issued against him by the UN tribunal at the Hague, adding that he is leading a “nonstop push over the telephone” to prevent it. Both Washington and Tel Aviv are not among the 124 states that signed the ICC Rome Statute of 1998, which established genocide as one of four major international crimes, along with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes of aggression. Hebrew newspaper Maariv newspaper also reported that Netanyahu is fearful of the prospect of an ICC warrant against him. Sources close to the matter told the newspaper that Netanyahu has made an extensive number of phone calls to international leaders and officials, particularly US President Joe Biden, in an attempt to prevent the issuance of an arrest warrant against him and that the Israeli prime minister is indirectly trying to pressure Biden to act against the ICC. “Netanyahu realizes that the international arrest warrant could make him subject to prosecution and detainment, so he attempts to thwart its issuance daily,” the sources said. The sources also did not rule out the possibility that the recent shift in the Israeli position regarding a prisoner exchange and ceasefire deal, which now appears to be in favor of an agreement, is part of efforts to avoid the ICC warrant.
The threat of a warrant might also be delaying a Rafah invasion

The discovery of the largest Hamas tunnel in Gaza and the Israeli army falls into Hamas's biggest trap and the beginning of a war of attrition Updates on the Al-Aqsa Flood operation presented in this episode of Samri Channel.
Starting with the Israeli occupation army, which announced the discovery of what it described as the largest tunnel discovered so far in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war that has been ongoing since the seventh of last October. Pictures published by the army showed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant inspecting the tunnel, accompanied by a number of commanders, while the Times of Israel described it as a huge underground network reaching a depth of 50 meters in some places, and wide enough to accommodate vehicles.
The Israeli occupation army said that it had uncovered what it described as a giant tunnel network that was managed by Muhammad al-Sinwar, brother of the leader of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, Yahya al-Sinwar. According to a statement by the occupation army, the tunnel extends in one of its parts to 4 kilometers from the Jabalia area in the north of the Gaza Strip and reaches a distance of 400 meters from the Beit Hanoun crossing in the north. The Israeli army said that the "Yahlom" unit of the Gaza Military Division's infantry and engineering forces carried out exploratory operations that enabled it to discover about 4 kilometers of the tunnel's path at a depth of 50 meters. Presidential election results The Israeli army published pictures of Defense Minister Yoav Galant inspecting the tunnel that was uncovered, accompanied by military commanders.  According to what Agence France-Presse reported, the tunnel was provided with a pipeline, electricity, ventilation, sanitation, communications networks, and railways. Its floor is dirt and its walls are made of reinforced concrete, and its outlet is reinforced with a metal cylinder approximately one and a half centimeters thick.
She added that the excavation work cost millions of dollars and continued for years under the supervision of Muhammad al-Sinwar, the brother of Yahya al-Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, who is considered the planner of the October 7 attack. Army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said on the “X” platform that the nearest tunnel opening is located about 400 meters from the Erez crossing, which separates the northern Gaza Strip from Israel. He added, "The army carried out exploratory operations in the tunnel, and uncovered more than 4 kilometers of the tunnel's path, the maximum depth of which reaches about 50 meters."
He continued, "The tunnel's path branches into several branches and side lines, which in itself constitute a wide and complex network of tunnels. The path contains the infrastructure for sanitation, electricity, communications, and telephones, in addition to solid doors." He pointed out that many weapons were found inside the tunnel, and that offensive operations were launched from the tunnel targeting Israeli forces during the fighting in the Gaza Strip. A few days ago, armed men were spotted inside the tunnel.
On the other hand, US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Tel Aviv, ahead of his meetings with Israeli government officials, to obtain a clearer assessment from Israeli officials regarding their military operations in the Gaza Strip. Austin is expected to meet with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant later, Monday. Austin's visit to Israel is considered the latest by an official in the US administration, amid a sharp disagreement between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the increasing civilian casualties in Gaza.
Biden is under increasing pressure, domestically and internationally, for Netanyahu to stop the violent bombing of Gaza, which has sparked global outrage and calls for a permanent ceasefire. CNN reported earlier that US officials expect Israel to move, by next January, to a less intensive strategy of raids, narrowly targeting specific Hamas fighters and leaders.
A senior defense official said that the Israeli security establishment is working to evaluate the conditions necessary to move to the next phase of the conflict “every hour, if not daily,” and added that Austin wants to hear “a very clear announcement of their self-assessment,” on Monday. Austin will receive updates on how the IDF, the War Cabinet and Defense Minister Yoav Galant are faring. Military reading... Why did the Israeli army choose to announce the discovery of the giant Qassam tunnel now?

The day before, it became known that the American White House intends to allocate about $8 billion to support the state of Israel, which has become the target of an unprecedented attack by Palestinian terrorists. It is expected that the corresponding funds will be used to purchase military equipment and the latest developments in the defense sector. Against this background, some experts have already expressed concern that as a result of US actions, Ukraine may be left without the necessary military support from the United States. Is it so? During his telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Joseph Biden categorically condemned the attack by radicals from the Hamas movement on Israeli territory and promised Tel Aviv “maximum assistance” in the Israeli war against terrorists. According to him, in the near future, official Washington will use all opportunities to provide its closest ally in the Middle East with feasible or, more precisely, large-scale military assistance. Nothing has been reported about the mechanisms of this process, however, apparently Washington may face a number of bureaucratic obstacles here. First, appropriate funds must be approved by Congress. Considering that the Upper House of the highest legislative body of the United States was left without a speaker (former head of the structure Kevin McCarthy was dismissed last week), the people's representatives cannot begin the necessary voting procedure. Secondly, there are practically no “free” funds in the American treasury: the previously mentioned funds in the amount of $5 billion were promised to Ukraine. It would seem that in the light of new events, the latter circumstance should cause some concern in Kyiv. “It just so happens that events in the Middle East have relegated the situation in Ukraine to the background on the world agenda,” American political commentator William Connolly stated in a commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. “It is quite obvious that in these conditions the United States will be concerned about providing support to Tel -Aviva Thus, even if the House of Representatives urgently elects a speaker, the issue of financing the war in Israel will be the main one for Washington.” At the same time, according to the analyst, money for the US Middle Eastern ally will not be taken from the funds created for Ukraine. “On this point, the current American budget provides for a separate item called “emergency expenses,” Connolly noted. The US State Department is expected to make a detailed statement in the coming days about Washington's plans for material and technical support for Israel. The next tranche of assistance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces remains a matter of time.

Jerusalem: Merging Israel’s technological expertise with India’s mass production capabilities, experts from the two countries have joined hands to develop rapid testing for COVID-19 in under 30 seconds.
Israel will soon send a high level research delegation to India to conduct a series of “final stages of testing” as part of the joint effort to develop the rapid testing kits for COVID-19 .
A high ranking team from the Directorate of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), in the Ministry of Defense, which has been working with India’s DRDO to develop rapid testing for COVID-19 in under 30 seconds, is to leave from Tel Aviv to New Delhi on a special flight in a few days, Israel’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Thursday.
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Ministry of Health are also involved in this unprecedented cooperation between the two countries which aims at “merging Israeli technology with Indian development and production capabilities to allow a swift resumption of normal life alongside the virus”.
The DDR&D team will conduct a series of “final stages of testing” to determine the effectiveness of a number of rapid diagnostic solutions with their Indian counterparts.
Since the start of the pandemic, the DDR&D has tested dozens of diagnostic technologies. Some of them have matured and passed initial trials in Israel, however in order to complete testing and prove their effectiveness, these must be tested on a wide range of patients, IMoD said.
The four tech systems that will be tested are – voice test, breathalyzer test based on terra-hertz waves, isothermal test, and polyamino acids test.
“What they all have in common is the ability to detect the presence of the virus in the body quickly- usually within minutes. Developing diagnostic capabilities is a goal for the State of Israel and of many additional countries around the world. It is the most effective way to cut off ‘chains of infection’, prevent prolonged quarantine and enable the reopening of the global economy,” the statement said.
“We hope that the research and development led by the DDR&D together with our excellent industries and academic institutions, will lead to a breakthrough that will change the way we diagnose and fight the virus, while giving the boost necessary to ‘restart’ our economy,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz said.
Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi noted that this cooperation provides a unique opportunity for scientific and technological cooperation that can assist Israel, India and the world in coping both with the pandemic and with the economic crisis that came with it.
The cooperation between Israel and India will enable the delegation and its Indian counterparts, to collect tens of thousands of samples in just ten days, and analyze them using computer systems based on artificial intelligence. This massive sampling will shorten processes and advance the approval of effective technology. All tests will be validated using PCR tests.
“The cooperation between India and Israel on COVID-19 is a good example of harnessing the scientific and technological strengths that the two countries have for larger, common good. It will also further deepen our strategic ties, India’s Ambassador Sanjeev Singla told PTI.
The flight will be carrying some breakthrough emerging Israeli technologies for combatting COVID-19, which have been donated by the Israeli foreign ministry and the private sector, in order to bolster India’s response to the virus outbreak.
The plane will also deliver mechanical ventilators which were given special permission by Israel for export to India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu have held three telephonic conversations since the outbreak of the pandemic and promised mutual assistance in dealing with the virus, committing to joint technological and scientific research between the countries.
The Israeli media widely reported that Modi lifted a ban on the export of Hydroxychloroquine at Netanyahu’s request.
“The past few years have cemented the strategic relations between India and Israel and have included two historical visits of the Prime Ministers in Israel and in India,” a press statement from the ministry of defence said.
“India seeks to integrate advanced technologies in its hospitals as they prepare to treat massive waves of COVID-19 patients on an Indian scale. The Israeli companies chosen by the MFA, MOD and Israel Defence Forces to be sent to India are potentially given unique access to one of the largest economies in the world to provide monitoring and treatment technologies while significantly reducing contact between the patients and the medical staff,” it said.
“By opening the door to India’s market with its development and production capabilities, these Israeli technologies can be mass produced at a lower cost and could in future be jointly exported to third countries,” it said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge, so it is only right that the solution be a global scientific cooperation between countries. India and Israel’s military R&D cooperation is well known for its success. I have no doubt the same will be seen in the private sector joined by brilliant scientific minds from both countries to introduce a breakthrough in swift and simple testing procedures, said Prof. Nati Keller, an infectious diseases specialist from Sheba Medical Center, who is leading the medical side of the delegation.-PTI

Most expensive cities (CNBC) Zurich and Paris have displaced Singapore and Osaka in a recent report on the world’s most expensive cities. The two Asian cities previously joined Hong Kong at the top of the rankings. That’s based on The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Worldwide Cost of Living index which shows how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the prices of goods and services in more than 130 cities as of September 2020. According to the report, Zurich and Paris’ jump to first place was due to the strengthening of the Swiss franc and the euro. “The Covid-19 pandemic has caused the weakening of the U.S. dollar while western European and north Asian currencies have strengthened against it, which in turn has shifted prices for goods and services,” said Upasana Dutt, head of Worldwide Cost of Living at The EIU. New York City is used as the base city in the index. The top ten: Zurich, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tel Aviv, Osaka, Geneva, New York, Copenhagen, Los Angeles.
U.S., Canada, Mexico to extend border restrictions until late December (AP) U.S. land borders with Canada and Mexico are expected to remain closed to non-essential travel until Dec. 21 at the earliest amid a rising number of U.S. coronavirus cases, officials in Washington and Ottawa told Reuters on Wednesday. Mexico’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the decision later on Wednesday in a post on Twitter. The restrictions were first put in place in March to control the spread of the virus and have been extended on a monthly basis ever since. In Ottawa, a Canadian government source said the travel restrictions in place at the Canada-U.S. land border would remain in effect for at least another month.
Recession With a Difference: Women Face Special Burden (NYT) For millions of working women, the coronavirus pandemic has delivered a rare and ruinous one-two-three punch. First, the parts of the economy that were smacked hardest and earliest by job losses were ones where women dominate—restaurants, retail businesses and health care. Then a second wave began taking out local and state government jobs, another area where women outnumber men. The third blow has, for many, been the knockout: the closing of child care centers and the shift to remote schooling. That has saddled working mothers, much more than fathers, with overwhelming household responsibilities. “We’ve never seen this before,” said Betsey Stevenson, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan and the mother of a second grader and a sixth grader. Recessions usually start by gutting the manufacturing and construction industries, where men hold most of the jobs, she said. The triple punch is not just pushing women out of jobs they held, but also preventing many from seeking new ones.
U.S. to Drop Case Against Mexican Ex-Official to Allow Inquiry in Mexico (NYT) The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to drop drug trafficking and corruption charges against a former Mexican defense minister to allow Mexican officials to investigate him, Attorney General William P. Barr announced Tuesday in an abrupt reversal a month after the official was arrested in Los Angeles. The official, Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, had been Mexico’s defense minister from 2012 to 2018 and was accused of taking bribes in exchange for protecting cartel leaders. But Mr. Barr and Mexico’s attorney general, Alejandro Gertz Manero, stopped short in a statement of promising any charges in Mexico. In a court filing, prosecutors acknowledged that the Trump administration had determined that preserving its relationship with Mexico prevailed over pursuing the case. “The United States has determined that sensitive and important foreign policy considerations outweigh the government’s interest in pursuing the prosecution of the defendant, under the totality of the circumstances, and therefore require dismissal of the case,” they wrote in asking a judge to dismiss the charges.
Biden’s DIY transition proceeds without Trump assistance (AP) President Donald Trump’s refusal to cooperate with his successor is forcing President-elect Joe Biden to seek unusual workarounds to prepare for the exploding public health threat and evolving national security challenges he will inherit in just nine weeks. Blocked from the official intelligence briefing traditionally afforded to incoming presidents, Biden gathered virtually on Tuesday with a collection of intelligence, defense and diplomatic experts. And as the worst pandemic in a century bears down on the U.S. with renewed ferocity, the current administration is blocking Biden from collaborating with its response team. Biden’s representatives instead plan to meet directly with pharmaceutical companies this week to determine how best to distribute at least two promising vaccines to hundreds of millions of Americans, the biggest logistical challenge to face a new president in generations. The moves reflect how Biden is adjusting to a historically tense transition. With no sign that Trump is prepared to facilitate soon a peaceful transfer of power, Biden and his team are instead working through a series of backup options to do the best they can to prepare for the challenges he will face as soon as he takes office in January.
When Trump Goes, Can the Democrats Hold It Together? (NYT) The Democratic Party is struggling with internal contradictions, as its mixed performance on Election Day makes clear. Analysts and insiders are already talking—sometimes in apocalyptic terms—about how hard it will be for Joe Biden to hold together the coalition that elected him as the 46th president. The intraparty dispute burst out full force on Nov. 5 during a three-hour House Democratic Caucus telephone meeting. Moderates angrily lashed out at liberals, accusing them of allowing divisive rhetoric such as “defund the police” and calls for socialism to go largely unchallenged. Those on the left pushed right back, accusing centrists of seeking to downgrade the demands of minorities, including those voiced at Black Lives Matter protests. Abigail Spanberger, who represents the 7th Congressional District in Virginia—which runs from the suburbs of Richmond through the exurban and rural counties in the center of the state—voiced her instantly famous critique of the liberal wing of her party during the phone call: “We have to be pretty clear about the fact that Tuesday—Nov. 3—from a congressional standpoint, was a failure,” she told her Democratic colleagues. “The number one concern that people brought to me” during the campaign “was defunding the police.” And “We need to not ever use the words ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again because while people think it doesn’t matter, it does matter. And we lost good members because of that.” Representative Rashida Tlaib, whose Michigan district is among the poorest in the country, and who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America—directly countered Spanberger and other moderates: “To be real, it sounds like you are saying stop pushing for what Black folks want.” Other Democrats who describe themselves as democratic socialists, including the former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, have become a substantial Democratic constituency.
Pandemic media syndrome? (Scientific American) According to Claudia Wallis, of Scientific American, recent studies have shown that the pandemic’s toll on mental health has been even worse than experts expected, especially among young adults. Roxane Cohen Silver, a psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, found that “increased engagement with media coverage of the outbreak” is a major driver of anxiety among people of all ages. “If people are engaged with a great deal of media, they are more likely to exhibit and report distress, but that distress seems to draw them further into the media,” Silver says. “It’s a cyclical pattern from which it is difficult to extricate oneself.”
Sweden’s coronavirus strategy (Washington Post) Even Sweden appears to be abandoning the Swedish model. On Monday, the country’s authorities banned gatherings of more than eight people as they grappled with the second coronavirus wave surging through much of Europe. The new restrictions followed other protocols coming into effect this week, including protective measures around nursing homes and bans on alcohol sales at restaurants and bars after 10 p.m. The shift in tone is noteworthy given Sweden’s notorious light-touch approach to the pandemic. “It is a clear and sharp signal to every person in our country as to what applies in the future,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said during a news conference Monday. “Don’t go to the gym, don’t go the library, don’t have dinner out, don’t have parties—cancel!” Hospitalizations are rising faster in Sweden than any other European country, and Sweden’s per capita death rate is several times higher than those of its Nordic neighbors Finland, Denmark and Norway.
Amid pandemic, Belgrade street kids find comfort at refuge (AP) In a small, brightly-colored backstreet house in Belgrade a teenage girl is drying her hair, while two others eat lunch in the kitchen. A group of boys are having their temperatures checked at the entrance as a precaution against coronavirus. It’s another busy day for Svratiste, or Roadhouse, Belgrade’s first daily drop-in center for street kids that for years has been a rare oasis of warmth and comfort for the Serbian capital’s most vulnerable inhabitants. Since opening in 2007, Svratiste has welcomed hundreds of children—some as young as five—who have come here to warm up, wash or eat. With social isolation growing and the economic situation worsening in the pandemic, the center’s role has become even more significant. Apart from providing food and clothes, the Svratiste team has also sought to help the children socialize and get to know their town by visiting playgrounds, cinemas and theaters. A key effort has been to include them in the education system and make sure they stay. During the pandemic, the center helped with online classes that most children have no means of following. One of their success stories has been Bosko Markovic, now 18, who first came to Svratiste five years ago. With the center’s help, Markovic has finished high school and now has his eyes set on becoming a policeman, he told the Associated Press. “They (Svratiste) have made me a better person,” he said proudly.
Pompeo To Visit Israeli West Bank Settlements During Farewell Tour (Foreign Policy) U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Israel today as he continues his whistle-stop tour of U.S. allies. Before he heads to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, he is planning on making history. Pompeo will visit two Israeli settlements both considered in violation of international law, one in the Golan Heights and one in the West Bank. By doing so, he becomes the first U.S. Secretary of State to visit either site. His de facto endorsement of the Israeli occupation stands in contrast to the outgoing Obama administration’s moves in 2016, allowing passage of a United Nations Security Council resolution declaring Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory illegal by abstaining from (rather than vetoing) the vote. His visit also comes as Israel plans to expand a settlement in East Jerusalem, despite outcry from the United Nations and European Union.
Reassured by Biden Win, Palestinians Will Resume Cooperation With Israel (NYT) The Palestinian Authority said Tuesday that it was resuming its cooperation with Israel, ending six months of financial hardship for tens of thousands of West Bank residents and signaling relief over the election of Joseph R. Biden Jr. It was one of the first clear signs that anticipation of a new administration in Washington is having an effect on international relations. The Palestinian announcement undid a set of stringent measures imposed by Mahmoud Abbas, the authority’s president, in May in a desperate protest against plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to unilaterally annex large portions of the occupied West Bank. The Trump administration had indicated it would support some form of annexation, which would have imposed Israeli sovereignty over land that the Palestinians have counted on for a future state. Mr. Abbas cut off security coordination with Israel, raising fears that attacks might go unprevented. He also severed civilian ties, including those that help Palestinians travel into Israel for work or medical treatment. Most painful of all to his own people, Mr. Abbas stopped accepting routine transfers of more than $100 million a month in taxes that Israel collects on the Palestinians’ behalf, funds that account for more than 60 percent of the authority’s budget. The lack of funds forced salary cuts for tens of thousands of public-sector employees, compounding what was already a devastating economic crisis because of the pandemic. “Praise God, I feel so relieved,” Rami Kitaneh, 35, a nurse at the Hugo Chavez Ophthalmic Hospital in the central West Bank, said Tuesday night. “I gave up so much since the start of the crisis, but now I can breathe.”
Security officials worry Israel and Saudi Arabia may see the end of Trump as their last chance to go to war with Iran (Business Insider) European intelligence officials are alarmed about the possibility of military action towards Iran in the waning days of the Trump administration. Concern that Trump—who has pushed for maximum pressure on Iran—or a combination of Israel or Saudi Arabia creating a military confrontation in the waning days of the administration has been a concern for over a week, according to three European intelligence officials who spoke with Insider. The news that last week the president requested a list of military options from his military and diplomatic advisors has sent these concerns into overdrive. One fear is of unilateral action by the US to force a military clash that might make it impossible for the incoming Biden administration to return to the 2015 joint nuclear agreement that traded sanctions relief on Iran for an end to its nuclear weapon programs, all three officials said. They declined to speak on the record in exchange for their candid views on the situation.
People go hungry in Ethiopia’s Tigray as conflict marches on (AP) People are going hungry in Ethiopia’s rebellious northern Tigray region as roads are blocked, airports are closed and the federal government marches on its capital in a final push to win a two-week war. “At this stage there is simply very little left, even if you have money,” according to an internal assessment by one humanitarian group, seen by The Associated Press. The assessment, based on a colleague who managed to get out, said people “will stay where they are, there is no place in Tigray where the situation is any different and they cannot cross over into the other regions of Ethiopia because of fear of what would be done to them.” For more than a week, the United Nations and other aid organizations have been warning of disaster. Long lines formed outside shops within days of the Nov. 4 announcement by Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that a military offensive had begun in response to an attack by Tigray regional forces on a military base. Trucks laden with food, fuel and medical supplies have been stuck outside the region’s borders. Banks in Tigray were closed for days, cutting off humanitarian cash transfers to some 1 million people. And even before the fighting, a locust outbreak had been destroying crops. Over 27,000 Ethiopians have fled into neighboring Sudan, burdening villages that have been praised for their generosity, though they have little to give.
