hey fam, welcome to the April 2024 roundup of the best hannigram fics i've read this past month! i read over 100 fics total, and these were the cream of the crop.

as a reminder: the ingredients for a five star rating typically (but not always!!) include some combination of a.) believable characterizations of both Hannibal and Will, b.) compelling plot and/or character arcs, and c.) high quality smut.

that being said, my judgment of the aforementioned ingredients is powered almost exclusively by vibes and as such, is incredibly subjective.

Word Count: 84,596 Summary: When things don’t go according to plan, Hannibal makes a wish. He finds himself a year-and-a-half in the past and seemingly given another chance with Will. His feelings about the situation only get more complicated when he realizes he may not have completely lost access to his old timeline after all. A Digestivo canon divergence.

If you follow me, you probably saw me already raving about this fic. This was so fucking good, holy fucking shit. And also heartbreaking. Made me think a lot about the nature of reality and what does it mean for something to be "real." Plus, I really love fics that explore their shared mind palace because I genuinely think that is one of the more underexplored aspects of their relationship. Definitely heavy on the angst, but there is a happy ending!

Word Count: 82,427 Summary: Hannibal solves the mystery of time travel and he and Will decide to go into the past and take opportunities previously missed along with rewriting the regrets they each hold. Changing the past does not effect the future and they have free reign to play as the please.

GIVE ME MORE THAN FIVE STARS PLEASE. I am obsessed with this fic. I've mostly stayed clear of time travel fics (aside from, you know, the one right above this) because the execution can be hit or miss, but let me fucking tell you. This was a god damn home run. There's a little bit of angst, but then there's also a chapter where Will challenges Hannibal that he wouldn't have been able to seduce him while Will was still working in Louisiana fixing boat motors. And obviously Hannibal decides to take that challenge.

Railroad Romance by OneWhoSitsWithTurtles

Word Count: 12,400 Summary: Hannibal is still Hannibal, and Will is still Will. Except Will is not part of the FBI and they meet on a two day train trip from New Orleans to Baltimore.

Dirty. Talk. In. FRENCH. Holy shit. Okay this was excellent. EXCELLENT. Perfect characterizations, and wonderful dialogue. Wow. Also, I love trains. Who doesn't love trains?

Word Count: 130,185 Summary: If Will and Hannibal hadn't gone into their respective careers, they would have become porn stars.

I had my doubts about a pornstar AU, but I've really enjoyed everything else by this author and it was over 100k, so I gave it a shot! And WOW. The characterizations of both Will and Hannibal were spot on and believable. A good mix of fluff and angst, and the author clearly put a lot of thought into the porn scenes. Tbh I'm probably going to reread this shortly.

It was after the third body drop a week ago that it became clear that Will had a secret that somehow involved the case, one he wasn’t willing to share yet, not even with Hannibal. At 6:43 AM, Will had texted Hannibal that a fourth body had been found and that he was on his way to the scene with Jack. At 8:06 PM, Will had stepped into Hannibal’s office, thirty-six minutes past his appointment time, and practically shouted “I used to be a stripper!” as loudly as his hoarse voice would allow him to. Hannibal Lecter, though not phased by much in life, has never been entirely able to predict Will Graham, but this is just… getting out of control. Alternatively, the FBI is hunting a serial killer targeting male strippers, and Will decides to throw himself into the fray. Hannibal is beyond pleased.

An AU where Will was a stripper in college and now he's working a case where he can be live bait as a stripper? Shut the fuck up. Mostly told from Hannibal's perspective, and it's just *chefs kiss*. Who knew Will giving Hannibal a lap dance would be so HOT. (I could have guessed.)

Word Count: 5,173 Summary: Hannibal was stubborn, independent, and Will had always loved that about him, but there were times, times like these, in the midst of heat, in the midst of such a thorough breeding, when lessons in submission were necessary.

My only thought at the end of this was, "Shut the whole fuck up" in the best way possible. Smut. Just all smut.

I LOVE a good season 1 AU and this was checking all of the boxes for me! There's a secret relationship, Hannibal actually gets Will treated for his encephalitis, Will finds out about Hannibal, etc. Very much loved the plot, and the characterizations were spot on.

You want dark!Will mixed in with some incredibly jealous and possessive Hannigram? Hooo boy do I have a fic for you! The ending was a little abrupt, but it was the perfect mix of gut-wrenching angst and toxicity + smoking hot smut. I genuinely had to stop and focus on my breathing more than once.

THIS WAS TENDER. Fluffy, angsty, smutty, I loved it. Molly showed up with Will's dogs and decided she wasn't going to turn them in, which was a little weird, but I really loved this fic. Just them learning how to be with each other. Also EXCELLENT marathon smut scenes. Like yesssss, of course they can each cum like three times in a row.

Word Count: 25,466 Summary: When Will Graham storms into Hannibal's house muttering about kissing Alana Bloom, the good doctor makes Will an offer: Pretend to date Hannibal in order to prove to Alana that Will is not only stable but capable of being in a relationship. When Alana is convinced Will is the man of her dreams, Hannibal will step aside and Will can get his girl.

APH CARTHAGE/HANNIBAL

Tbh he’s a bit complicated to explain for me 🤔 but to start, he’s the son of Phoenicia/Melqart! He and his father weren’t always super close but Carthage respects Phoenicia. Phoenicia taught him everything he knows about business, trading and his knowledge on the seas in general lol. To be honest, I didn’t want to take the military route I see most people go for with their APH Carthage ocs which isn’t bad at all! I just thought it’d be interesting if he was more based on Carthaginian politicians.

He’s very prideful, a bit stuck up but presents himself as superior (like literally everyone in the ancient world). He’s a bit narcissistic too but it’s more or less just having an inflated ego. He likes to show off his navy and how good at trading he is and a lot of the times, his wealth.

Before I go any further I AM A TOXIC DOOMED UNHEALTHY CARTHROME TRUTHER. THEY ARE AT EACH OTHER’S NECKS AND REGRET THEY EVER TRIED TO MAKE A RELATIONSHIP WORK THEY ARE SO TOXIC YAOI.

Rome and Carthage’s relationship to me is veeeery interesting. Like… Carthage knew he was great. The people around him knew he was a great. He was a big, maritime trading empire. But he needed more. It was never enough for him—I’m not sure if he feels guilty about this want for more and more but I’m leaning towards yes.

Rome was the same. He was just a regional power at the time, away from his siblings trying to conquer the Italian peninsula. But he oh so desperately needed to be recognised as more. He wanted to know he could rest comfortably knowing there was nobody that was going to try and invade him at any given time. Most of all, he wanted superiority (young Rome was EXTREMELY narcissistic lmao.. glad he’s toned it down overtime).

Their relationship just started out as acknowledging they needed something from each other and they were the ones that were going to give it to each other. But they got attached, “somewhat”. I think Carthage especially knew it was wrong and he shouldn’t try to pursue something more with Rome because he just has this gut feeling it’s not going to end well for him—Rome is growing, he!s becoming stronger, and sooner or later he wasn’t going to need Carthage anymore. But he did it anyway.

When Rome did eventually end up leaving him Carthage was PISSED (and maybe a lil heartbroken but shhh Carthage voice im a manly man that doesn’t need romance), but he could stomach it for now until that shit with the Mamertines happened—honestly thats another conversation in itself but basically, I have two Mamertines ocs, a set of siblings and being the land pirates they were they reunited Carthage and Rome except it’s not a happy reunion and Carthage wants to see Rome burn at a stake and vice versa.

(After the second Punic war in particular I’m pretty sure he’s thoroughly a bit afraid of Carthage and the seas from the first coughs HANNIBAL IS AT THE GATES!!!1!1!1!)

tolkien: tough one. honestly, i feel like due to the nature of the fandom most people have defensible readings of most characters, even if they're not my own? to the extent tht people get characters wrong it's mostly by not thinking abt them very much! I'm inclined to pick Galadriel, though, bc she's also in LotR and so you get LotR fans thinking they can speak to first or second age galadriel, and then u get silm fans overcorrecting and ignoring third age galadriel entirely, and ofc there's the various Sexist Archetypes she gets shoved into by virtue of Being A Woman. actually a Lot of the women in tolkien are characters ppl get wrong a lot. elwing! míriel! indis! idril! lúthien! niënor! haleth! And So On Forever And Ever. this is again mostly due to Simply Not Thinking About Them Very Much tho

wktd: tbh the fandom gets the wktd girls pretty solidly. no real notes here. benefits from being a small fandom for a game with Three characters all of whose issues are pretty spelled out for you & constitute the central plot.

glowfic: im gonna be honest i do not feel confident to speak for other ppl's characters and state what ppl get right/wrong..! like idk man maybe im the one getting them wrong. ppl mostly dont like... write fic or make headcanons for each others glowfic in a way where the author isnt involved in having opinions about it? so if someone was mischaracterizing a glowfic character idk how i would know rly

hannibal: all of them @_@ no one understands this show like i do and it's a perpetual frustration... im gonna throw out abigail as my answer tho bc she sooooo often gets reduced to like, part of the murder family, which ignores soooooo much of her storyline and how much she did not (uncomplicatedly) want that. her relationship with will is So So Complicated but ultimately she likes freddie more than she likes will in some ways! and at least back when i was in the fandom ... ppl dont get that or just treat it as like, a flaw or misunderstanding to be corrected.

tma: ooooo this is a tough one. honestly the fandom was big enough that it's hard for me to say No One in the fandom got characters & in a lot of cases there was the question of like, does the fandom not understand X or do i just not seek out very many fics abt X... e.g. i havent read any tma fic that got georgie very well but also i havent read any georgie-centric tma fic! kind of a skill issue on My part rly!

mcelroy + polygon content: oh this is a trip down memory lane. everyone writes taako very few people write taako well. i'm not a taako fan and instead had Cares About Less Popular Characters disease but i did feel for taako enjoyers for this. i didnt really read polygon rpf so i can't speak to that side of things.

poetry and short stories: i don't think there are rly characters Everyone In The Fandom gets wrong for this tbh. like thats just not rly a coherent thing

the untamed/mdzs: SONG LAN...... i am not even a big song lan fan im a xuexiao stan first and foremost. but good lord. man has like 2 character traits and the ppl writing fic for him cant even remember those! also lwj but with the disclaimer that i have a very specific read of novel!lwj that just doesnt rly apply to untamed!lwj. which most people are writing for. i guess this is also true of song lan but i have more of a sense of "if you care a lot about song lan you should do your due diligence in hunting for scraps of characterization" whereas caring about untamed!lwj and not reading the book is like. yeah okay fair enough. to me.

tgcf: ooooh. hard one. my immediate instinct is mu qing bc i follow the tag and have to read way too much mu qing slander but i have in fact read good mu qing fic.... might stand by that anyway tho. the tgcf tag is like 50% mu qing slander by volume and it makes me sad. mu qing get behind me bby i'll protect u ;-;

dream SMP: hahaha. ha. what character DOESN'T dsmp fandom get wrong. it gets tommy wrong it gets techno wrong it gets phil wrong it gets puffy and niki and hannah wrong it gets dream wrong it gets purpled wrong it gets quackity wrong it gets sam wrong it gets schlatt wrong it gets karl wrong it gets george wrong it gets wilbur wrong it gets LITERALLY EVERYONE wrong. constantly. the only times it doesn't get someone wrong is when it's forgotten that they exist at all (this is about the eggpire but it's also about eryn and fundy and jack manifold and i'm sure many many others i'm not currently remembering). im giving the prize for Getting It Wrong to phil, though. i don't even LIKE phil. but everyone who writes him gets him wrong. they are just writing Generic Bad Dad or Generic Good Dad. he's got traits! i promise!

ok actually since this one's my current special interest i'll go a bit more in depth. tommy's rude & annoying & a fighter, he very very rarely has the sort of fawn response ppl write. techno is funny but he's got emotions and he is usually acting based on those emotions; if you're writing him in s1 he's less based than you think and if you're writing him in s3 he's more based than you think. phil has traits other than being a dad and also if you can't accurately identify which characters he is and is not a dad to then you don't get to write him. puffy, niki, and hannah all have traits other than being women; no, "therapist", "girlboss", and "mom friend" don't count. purpled is not particularly a Manipulated Minor TM, he's an amoral mercenary, he's kinda fucked up by isolation but he's more like punz than he is like tommy or tubbo. none of quackity, sam, and dream are one-dimensional characters whose only trait is Sadistic Abuser but also if you write them without acknowledging that they're sadistic abusers (with the exception of writing about early dsmp/before The Horrors) then you're doing it wrong. same goes for schlatt but with the addition of "he should not under literally any circumstances talk like he's got a tumblr". karl's more of a bitch than that. so's george. wilbur is more of an asshole and less of a creep than that. i could go on literally forever the dsmp fandom gets every single character wrong & it is my burden to be right about all of them u_u

Thinking about natalie as a character so far:

Im only a little into season 2 but already i feel like she's suffering from the same issue she has all of season one, which is that her character is centered around Travis.

Travis this, travis that. She has little characterization outside of him and I don't care for her. I thought she'd be my favorite character when the series started, she had a strong character going in but now it feels like her entire purpose is to be an after thought to travis who wasn't the strongest character to begin with.

I understand not all characters can and will be developed equally; however it feels inexcusable that such a titular character to both the past and present can't seem to go beyond travis as a motivation or personality trait.

Even her interactions with the coach boiled down to travis, I'm in love, and relationship advice.

I wish they made her gay, honestly then they may have given her a shred of character because at least Taissa and Shauna have personalities outside of their relationships (/obsessions in shuanas case) with their partners.

The most developed character by far right now is Shauna, her scenes are the only ones that are compelling and interesting. She has complicated and decently well fleshed out relationships with multiple characters, her husband, daughter, jackie,taissa.

Jackie also was a pretty good character at the start but they definitely lagged on her development. I feel like she was built up to be some leader, but she only exhibits this quality once at the beginning and then we don't see it for a while, which wouldn't be a problem if we weren't also being set up to feel like Shauna resentment of jackie was warranted.

But heres the thing jackie isnt built up to a.) Play enough of a leading role to over shadow Shauna and b.) Mean enough for no reason to have Shauna be so callose to her.

I feel like i genuinely didn't case for Taissa romantic relationships which is a shame because i really only watched this show because i heard there were lesbians, but as usual I get served a cold plate of nothing. And then Taissa wife is, i think more internationally, a cold platter of boring.

Taissa is decently developed though i guess I'm just disappointed I couldn't really get into her relationship with van. I wish they had more chemistry. :/

So I guess I'm just kind of disappointed with yellow jackets as i was hoping for something with good characters and I think the characters are the weaker aspects of yellow jackets. Shuana's really fun though, so I can't entirely complain.

Tbh the show feels like something more akin to pretty little liars and something off of abc then it does a truly good series but i hope i like season 2 better? Maybe it'll get better?

In the mean time tho I'm kind of itching for something with angsty lesbians and better characters, y'know? When will i get lesbian hannibal? 🥲

i have so many thoughts on destiel you have opened the bag of tricks

in s4, their relationship was mostly one-sided. i do fear cas had a bit of love at first sight going on. i remember thinking a lot of the same thoughts i had when i watched hannibal, which was mostly just "god people were not exaggerating, huh" jshdjsj. but dean had a lot to deal with that season, not to mention grapple with the fact that angels even EXISTED, much less that one helped him. so not a whole lot happened there.

s5/s6 it was almost requited. it's weird; these two seasons sort of ride the line. i'd say that s5 was hard from castiel's perspective—he gave up literally almost everything for them. i think dean appreciated that more than he let on, when he had time to stop and think. which wasn't often. it was possible that more came out of that season, i think, but nothing fully came to fruition.

s6 was...an awkward time for them, in general. what with cas being busy with the war in heaven and dean being preoccupied with trying to help sam, they actually don't interact much outside of important plot conversations. either way, i think they both felt the effects of it. dean was stressed, and felt as though he was losing someone else he cared about while cas pulled away. cas was preoccupied, and felt like they were only calling him when they needed something. (which...was definitely an issue, but that's a post for a whole other time.) i'd consider this a breakup season, tbh jshdjsj

s7 is somehow even more complicated, especially since cas isn't even present for 95% of it. either way, someone (i think it's bobby?) refers to cas as dean's best friend in that season, and i think it stuck with me because it's pretty much true. from the flashbacks we get to the brothers as kids, it's pretty obvious neither of them were exactly social butterflies. i...would be willing to bet good money that cas is the only best friend dean's ever had. they haven't really had time to get closer than that, what with cas being decorporealized(? LMAO) for most of the season, and absent for most of the last one.

all in all, it's a tricky situation. i can sense that something deeper between the two of them would work, honestly—but as of now they haven't had the time to do anything with it. currently, prior to starting s8, i would say that cas is one of the closest friends dean has ever had—not counting blood relatives and father figures—and that he's still trying to process that. (that's part of why the s6 betrayal hit so bad.) and that dean is probably one of the few people castiel has ever truly loved—regardless of your definition of the word. either way, i'm curious to see where the two of them go from here. >.>

also, not that you asked, but i am LIVING for castiel and sam's friendship. the two genuinely bounce off of each other so well; they've each expressed extreme concern for the other when they get caught in stuff—and that's not even mentioning everything cas has done for sam, whether or not dean asked him to. i don't know. just something about their friendship really speaks to me. they're nice. :(

Tbh i don't like all the comparisons between hannibal and iwtv. Yes, there are some similarities between themes and aesthetics and general vibes but first of all, Louis being a black man is a very important facet that informs his character and his complicated relationship with Lestat and no dynamic between two white men in modern times in a very white centric story could ever really be the same. I don't like that white fans are erasing this. Secondly, iwtv is actually well-lit unlike hannibal where you couldn't see shit. Thirdly, in iwtv the characters are actually sucking and fucking unlike in hannibal where most of the sexual themes were symbolic and subtextual and it took them until the very end to even admit there was anything going on

So I mentioned offhand in another post that my read on Will and Bedelia’s therapy sessions in s3 is that she’s trying to manipulate him into killing Hannibal before Hannibal can come kill her. I’d like to expand on that a little, because tbh it’s one of the more opaque parts of the show, and NBC Hannibal is a show that’s already cagey about coming right out and saying what it’s doing. Even this reading is kinda provisional--it’s the only explanation I’ve come up with that makes sense to me so far, and I’d welcome discussion and alternate interpretations.

I’m working off a couple of base assumptions here:

Despite the show’s appearance of sometimes moving from one bizarre tableau or inscrutable conversation to another on pure dream logic, and despite how well it holds up when you watch it in “sure, this might as well happen” mode, when we’re shown something happening it’s usually because it advances some character- or plot-related story beat. Likewise in-universe, characters don’t do things for no reason, they have an agenda (or multiple conflicting agendas), even if Hannibal’s agenda is almost always “fuck around and find out.”

Bedelia’s overriding motivation is her own survival. If she’s involved in a situation, she needs to be able to maintain control over it; if she can see it going south to a point where she’ll lose control, she’s ready and willing to peace the fuck out entirely. Once that prerequisite is satisfied, she’s also motivated by curiosity--at least partly because access to information, which can then be withheld or selectively revealed, is her main lever of control--and probably some amount of paradoxical attraction to danger and violence. She doesn’t experience much if any compassion; her horror of violence is mainly at the breach of control it implies and the creation of a situation that could very quickly get out of hand.

So. What’s going on in Will and Bedelia’s therapy sessions? Well, the first angle of attack there is--why the fuck are Will and Bedelia having therapy sessions anyway? What’s the agenda? Will’s the easy one there, he’s overflowing with agenda--questions and resentments about what happened in Florence, a reactivated need to understand his own relationship with Hannibal, a need to talk things over when he “can’t just talk to any psychiatrist about what’s kicking around my head.” But Bedelia? She has peaced the fuck out. Why’s she getting involved again?

Process of elimination time:

She’s not taking patients for shits and giggles. The only one who’s ever convinced her to make an exception to her retirement is Hannibal, who had an extraordinary amount of leverage over her at the time. And she seems to be making a killing on the lecture circuit, so it’s not like she needs the fee.

She’s not particularly interested in Will for his own sake. She’s heard enough about him from Hannibal to do a competent job of dissecting him, but doesn’t make much or any effort to learn more. In fact, I’m pretty sure she’s the only psychiatrist on the Dark Psychiatry Murder Show to demonstrate no professional curiosity about him whatsoever. She only knows him in relation to Hannibal (his patient, his friend, his victim, his nemesis, his ex...) and that’s still how she relates to him in their sessions.

She doesn’t particularly like Will either, and she sure as hell isn’t trying to get on his good side.

She might be enjoying the opportunity to talk over her own relationship with Hannibal in a way that’s significantly closer to the truth than anything she can say in public. But it’s also a risk, and she manages it carefully--both the disclosure of information, and her getting involved at all.

The most in-character motivation turns out to also be the one that makes the most sense: Bedelia’s trying to save her own ass. She’s seen where the pieces are on the board: the Red Dragon, Will being brought back to consult on the case, Will inevitably consulting Hannibal. She’s seen that Hannibal is once again in a position to exert influence, stir up trouble, and potentially seize an opportunity to escape and come after her. She knows Will exerts more influence on Hannibal than anyone else in the world. So what’s she going to do about it? What's she trying to persuade him of?

Well, let’s take a look at the lines of conversation in her sessions with Will:

Perhaps most surprisingly to him, she’s the first person to spot Hannibal’s whole Murder Husbands/”we’re just alike” conception of Will’s potential and flat-out tell him it’s not going to work. As inconsistent as his compassion may be, it’s just as deeply rooted as his attraction to violence and neither one is going away--they are in perpetual tension except in the rare situtations where he feels like violence is the compassionate thing to do to prevent suffering.

If he was hoping to somehow save Hannibal, “manage” him, or push his monstrousness in more tolerable directions, well, look how well that turned out. Bedelia tried it too in Florence and, again, look how well that turned out. 0/10 do not recommend.

No matter what, as long as he and Hannibal are in each other’s orbits, they’re both absofuckinglutely stupid with mutual obsession and neither of them will be able to turn away.

Hannibal has hurt him terribly and will continue to hurt him as long as they’re within each other’s reach.

“The next time you have an instinct to help someone, you might consider crushing them instead. It might save you a great deal of trouble.”

I don’t know about you, but it looks an awful lot to me like Bedelia’s systematically going through the 3 Endings of All Hannibal Fanfiction and telling Will to get a fucking grip because all of it’s impossible. Can’t live with him. Can’t live without him. Just as she steered Hannibal to his “I have to eat him” epiphany in Florence, she’s trying to steer Will to the conclusion that the only possible ending here is with one or both of them dead.

I’m still chewing over where that goes in the last couple episodes of s3. So far my best read on that is that Will is stubbornly resistant to being steered and it drives Bedelia up the goddamn wall. Thus her incandescent fury and brazen emotional manipulation when she thinks he ought to be laser-focused on what Hannibal just tried to do to his family, and instead he volunteers for a half-baked plan that ends with someone he despises getting thrown under the bus. She’s got an incredibly slim case for pinning the blame for Chilton’s fate directly on Will*, and she must know it because she’s pushing his buttons like crazy to sell it to him. But she’s genuinely furious--and, Bedelia being Bedelia, it’s not out of moral indignation or compassion for Chilton. I suspect her line of thinking is that if not even this is enough to get him vengeful against Hannibal, and instead he’s pulling stunts like the TattleCrime article, well, she’s acutely aware that she’s on the list of people Will despises. Maybe she’s directly in the line of fire, maybe she’s just acceptable collateral damage, but either way Will’s "solutions” are creating a risk for her where she was trying to eliminate one.

* Will’s entire contribution to the plan was “So I really bad-mouth the Red Dragon in TattleCrime and give him a shot at me to lure him out”--he intended to assume all the risk. Alana was the one who suggested a professional voice to validate the trash-talk. She also volunteered Chilton for the part, explicitly because he was a fame-seeking idiot with his head too far up his own ass to see how much danger he’d be putting himself in. Being one of the four people in the room to watch Chilton dig himself into a hole, then adding the finishing touch of “let’s split the picture credit 50/50 too!”, makes Will kind of a dick for going along with it. But like fuck does it entitle him to the credit for engineering the whole situation. He wanted to put Chilton at risk--the exact same potential risk Will himself was assuming, in exchange for his shot at the same reward.

Bedelia’s out on a limb here and she knows it. If she had an actual case, she wouldn’t have to resort to openly manipulative jabs at Will’s sore spots about touch, external influence on identity, and fostering false trust. Or recycle Hannibal’s “Was this a potential outcome you foresaw? Congrats, that’s participation!” tactics for fostering false complicity. Trying to manage the risk of someone else’s violent behavior and failing isn’t “participating” in violence unless you’ve got a vested interest in shifting the blame. Bedelia’s not a reliable narrator here, and she blames Will for Chilton... why? Probably because she was angling for Hannibal to be the one he threw under the bus.

while i'm not particularly fond of anons (nex time you'd like to discuss something regarding my rules and/or character portrayal, i strongly encourage you to do so via ims - i don't bite, and if our points of view don't quite match? that's alright, i promise i'll leave you in peace :) ) for various reasons, i'm so glad you've read my rules (that probably makes you one of the few who follow me - at least i presume you do, idk - who has done so, so thank you so much!), i cannot stress enough how important they are to me. if i happen to follow you, rest assured that i have read yours (unless, ofc, i couldn't find one in your blog - in any case, if i happen to accidentally break one of yours, just hmu or gimme a nudge).

considering that you've asked more than one question, i'll answer to you in separate sections - needless to say that while i break it down your questions, the answer might become a little longer than usual (again, i'm sorry). i'll keep this tagged, in case any of my followers don't feel like reading about this. without further ado, let’s dive in.´

short answer? nope. but that is not a black or white question i’m afraid. no, i – nox, the human behind this blog of fictional characters – personally do not condone incest , never have and never will, and  don’t ship it. i do, however, ship consanguinamory on rare occasions, and when i do happen to write it i never do it in a good light.

for those who are not familiar with the term, here’s a little bit of info about it x && x. in short, the key difference between them is: incest is usually linked abuse (a fictional example that can be used, taking in consideration one of my very own muses, in this case is margot verger – who was sadly abused by her brother in the hannibal books) while consanguinamory (the lannisters, for example, or even the sharpe siblings from crimson peak are examples of consanguineous relationships) is the consensual romantic and/or sexual relationship between members of the same family who are of consenting age.

[ personally, i find both of them gross as fuuck irl but when it comes to fictional works i may get over this first disgust and ponder more on that && take in consideration the characters arch, plot, thoughts and the whole world they are set in. ]

i suppose the turning point here is the consent. i never, never, condone any sort of abuse – not in fiction and neither in real life – and while it’s a subject that bothers me to no end in real life, when it comes to fiction i am less inclined to project into them. i may write dark and toxic relationships, but i obviously do not condone them. that’s the point here – people on this hellsite usually mix the two together (condoning something and shipping/writing it, that is) when in fact they shouldn’t even be in the same box to begin with.

let’s say you write a fictional serial killer – norman bates, tate langdon, hannibal lecter, catherine tramell (that chick from basic instinct), patrick bateman, mrs lovett and sweeney todd, kai anderson, bellatrix, grindelwald and voldemort (the list of plausible examples could go on forever…) – here and ship with them; does it mean that you, the writer, condone every single action and choice your muse does? if writing something purely fictional equals to condoning it in real life, well… the world is even more fucked up than i first thought.

you see, in this little exercise in imagination, you could’ve easily picked a good guy or gal to write, the hero; the goody two shoes. why didn’t you? well, it’s complicated to pin point why some are drawn to darker works of fiction and characters while others are not, i suppose each individual has their own reasons && i can only speak for myself when i say that i am drawn to these sort of fictional works because they the safest way to explore dark topics that pertain to human society. on my side, it’s nothing but raw curiosity.

there’s also the issue of how different cultures see these relationships. in case you haven’t noticed, i am not from the states but actually from brazil. especially in the rural area, it’s not uncommon for second cousins to date or even marry (ew, i know, pretty gross). that’s something that is luckily falling out of practice, but you can easily find it, more so in the poor rural areas that are really far from the cities.

you may have noticed that most of the sources for the terms come from a blog that advocates real life consanguinamory – but make no mistake, i don’t support it. these were the only places i’ve found as sources in a quick look online. i don’t support it irl, but whatever consenting adults are doing amongst themselves is no concern of mine – i have no say on the matter and all in all, i don’t give a damn. i just don’t like it. everything i���ve discussed here is related to fiction, consent and is only ever related to people of consenting age.

to be honest with you, anon, i couldn’t possibly see how you’ve got confused with this. i thought i was pretty clear with that, but perhaps not. sorry, my english is not perfect. however, with the risk of sounding like a meme, i said what i said. if you personally feel uncomfortable or even triggered with fictional consensual incest otherwise known as consanguinamory, maybe my blog isn’t for you. not because i – as the mun –  condone it, but because i might mention it or even allude to it when i write certain characters. again, consent is the main thing here – you won’t ever see me writing that awful part of margot’s past, but i might mention it on some threads as it is part of her trauma but i will write jaime’s feelings regarding cersei and joanna’s love for tywin – and that should not be overlooked.

so far so good, am i to assume that you also believe that “murder is murder, regardless of if it is fiction or not”? should we call the police on, idk, george rr martin for killing....hell knows how many characters...at this point i’m sure not even he knows. leaving my petty comment aside (it’s the arthritis, i’m always annoyed when in pain), i see where you’re coming from; fair enough.  but you missed a big point here – consensual. i do not write abuse, even to the muses who – in the canon source material – have done so    ( like jaime lannister himself – who’s in a consanguinamorous [therefore, falling under the category of fictional consensual incest] relationship with cersei – who abused his sister next to their son’s dead body [ yeah, jaime apologists, i’m out to get y’all...jokes aside, i do not acknowledge people claiming that cersei manipulated him into going to bed with her, while they are both shitty and toxic as fuck people, their relationship is mutually messed up – gag if you must but jaime lannister is far from innocent angel ] )     in the past. i. don’t. write. it. but i do write jaime’s feelings for cersei because they are canon and are also a big part of the character he became.

all of that, of course, has to do with my own position on the “war” between the people who believe fiction has a great power and influence over reality vs the ones who do not believe in that. personally, i find it hard to believe that fiction is a brainwashing tool rewiring people’s brains  - i find the idea itself ludicrous, the ones who strongly stand for that aren’t that different from flat-earthers and people who believe in reverse racism tbh – but i do acknowledge the influence media has on society. its not nearly enough to turn someone to the “dark side” alone by itself – those who claim that videogames, for example, made them violent most likely already had something different and perhaps wrong with them before the games triggered something. i don’t believe that media creates things on people, but brings buried things (fears, feelings, emotions, hopes) back to the surface. it’s all about the stimulus.

if you wanna be scared, watch an horror movie; if you wanna be happy, a comedy video.  wanna feel warm inside and live unrealistic romantic expectations vicariously through fictional characters? read a 50.000 words slow burn fluffy happy fanfic of your otp at 3 am even though you gotta wake up early in the following morning....

point is, they are not creating things, they are bringing forth responses from you that were already there in your brain (everybody has laughed before and felt fear, it’s part of human development). and how you react to certain content is entirely to you and your past. say, if you drowned as a kid on the sea - and had trauma from that - the idea of watching titanic is not so fun, is it?

it’s not my place to decide what you should do, that is entirely your own choice to make, just be aware that, as i’ve stated before countless times, i may write dark topics that may or may not be triggering to some.  i do so because it is my blog, and i don’t react so harshly to this content (in fact, i love horror, thriller and dark fictional stuff – meanwhile i dread the thought of rom coms, hell knows why??) for i am lucky to be able to separate fiction from reality. basically, whilst writing a villain, i myself do not become one in real life – that part remains in fiction only and doesn’t affect me.

Thoughts on NBC’s ‘Hannibal’:

Full disclosure here, dark shows are my jam and this show literally killed me. But in the best ways possible. One of my friends actually told me to watch the show (it had been on my radar for a long time but I didn’t have a push until then) and I am so glad she did. Here’s the thing, I’ve watched a lot of TV. But this show is different than everything I’ve ever watched. Not only because it dives head on into morally ambiguous main characters that are never flat or uninteresting, the show bleeds life, change, and love through beautiful acting, directing, cinematography, music, and everything else.

It’s interesting because while watching it, it feels like a movie. The music resembles a score from a movie and every scene feels purposeful and heavy. The use of color and texture for the scenes were always beautiful and reminded me of movie quality. It’s eloquent and gruesome and really trippy. The sex scenes always get me, but they aren’t overly graphic or insincere, they’re just trippy. And as someone that enjoys art in tv, it’s masterful.

Let me just say, I’m not a big fan of murderers. Yes, I can get behind main characters as murderers (ei Dexter and Villanelle) but this show was different. Hannibal Lecter left me on the edge of my seat and I truly can say I could never expect what he was going to do next. And that’s high praise for me (since I find most shows predictable). I’m not saying I was always on Hannibal’s side (killing Beverly was a big no-no for me), but I found him complicated enough to follow him. He also didn’t turn at one point and was like “yeah, i’ll be good all of a sudden for you Will” which worried me. He was unapologetically sinister and chaotic and I loved it.

The killers and their victims were also really interesting and different. The bodies were like aesthetically pleasing... it was truly beautiful how they handled death. Every killer was interesting and hard to swallow. Just so hardcore and fun.

Every character has faults. Like real faults. Jack’s manipulative as fuck, for a while Alana was easy to manipulate and her caring/trust got in the way, Bedelia was a mess tbh stuck in her fascination (along with Chilton), Hannibal had a soft spot for Will, and Will didn’t trust himself or the monsters in his head. They used each other; abused each other. They broke trust and stupidly tried to gain it back. They lied and lied and let people lie to them. And I love this about them. They’re not perfect. They’re not stable. They have something to live and die for.

I could go on and on about Will’s character and how fucking amazing his transformation is throughout the series. I mean, I’m speechless. I don’t have the words to talk about Hugh Dancy’s acting and how he interacted with Mads (Hannibal). Just spot on. One of the best characters and character developments I have seen in a while.

Alana Goddamn Bloom’s transformation with that bi power we all knew was in her. God bless. When they paired her up with Margot, I jumped on board. Not just because I’m gay and a sucker for gay ships, but because it was just so fabulous. I love my murder wives. Enough said.

Hannibal and Will. Jesus christ. Their relationship is crazy and beautiful and dark and everything I could have wanted and more. I was so worried that I would be stuck watching this show shipping Will and Hannibal and having it not come to be. Their subtext was so strong in the first two seasons and I was so surprised but glad to find their relationship to grow in the third season. It wasn’t just subtext. And with the last scene the growing subtext evolved to a final answer; they couldn’t live without each other. I’m stunned. Just stunned.

I mean tbh it’s personal and subjective, but I just really hated the way they treated Hannibal’s ongoing gaslighting and abuse of Will and it’s increasing depraved severity, and then the creator insisted that abusive relationship was a love story.

It’s funny you know because I love dark storylines, and I love creators who write dark love stories. And I write complicated love stories with elements of abuse sometimes myself. But the creator’s inability to actually acknowledge the abuse/gaslighting (in the same way that EL James somehow thinks her main characters in 50SOG are in a healthy relationship) was just too disturbing for me. 

So I loved the first season, and actually watched all of the second and third, but with increasing enmity that to this day just gets stronger and more concentrated with time. 

I have no problems with other people loving the show. But I fucking hate it, despite - at the time - loving the first season and finding it very aesthetic etc. Tbh I also think Fuller needs to be put on a leash with some of his montage/camera sequences but that’s a whole other issue lmao. Tbh there is no hatred like the hatred that comes from watching a show you love, only to kind of have it betray you in an ongoing, relentless kind of way.

(Tbh it also got incoherent, badly filmed, nonsensical, absurdist, and just BAD in season 3 and then Fuller came out and was like ‘oh but it’s a gay love story’ and all the fans went THIS IS THE BEST EVER and suddenly no one cared that the last season was literally like watching a train hurtling into a psychedelic anus). 

(Incidentally this is also the same reason I started hating Legend of Korra, which is basically the complete ignorance of Bolin’s storyline where he literally gets relentlessly abused by Eska, pleads/begs his friends for help, is gaslighted and ignored and treated as a joke, and nothing ever happens about it. Because y’know… that’s funny???)

Hair: She's had an array of colours over the centuries, always long, but the styles have varied over the centuries. She currently favours fiery red or slivery-gold/platinum, changes it on a whim. Could be Russian witch stereotype red in the morning, and then Khaleesi coloured in the evening.

Eyes: Blue-green, occasionally they seem to flash red, though she claims that's just a trick of the light (or is it? tun, tun, tun!)

Weight: idk, but also what does it matter, she's immortal and basically undead, her body doesn't change.

Style: expensive. She likes wearing dark and/or vivid colours, as well as sharp and elegant clothing. Her style can best be described as "instilling fear in the hearts of men". Well, that's her wardrobe's goal, anyway.  

Additional Information: - wears a f u c k ton of heels, like, always, and yet they never make any noise - always seems to have a little box (or whatever) of fries/chips (whatever you wanna call it, as a north american, I call 'em fries) in her hands - likes wearing crosses, mainly as an inside joke with herself

Head cannon: Nika has a slightly complicated reputation, well, first off, she's a teacher, so she's not really involved with the hierarchy, she's outside of it. Her reputation, however, runs as either the coolest or scariest teacher. It really depends on how "interesting" she finds a student, she will spend time with them (positively or negatively), if she finds them to be "dull", however, they literally look like furniture to her, she will speak without ever hearing them. She's both a chill and strict teacher, if you get the work done, you can do whatever you want, if you're goofing off without doing anything or proving to be a nuisance whilst she's speaking, you may find your cauldron spontaneously exploding. She can also be chilling with the nuisances, if someone is speaking whilst she is, the cauldron will go "boom" whilst she continues on with the lesson as though nothing dramatic is happening. She's not an all together bad teacher though, if she finds people interesting, she'll spend time with them and actually attempt to pass on knowledge and throw questions at them during class, and even ask about their problems and whatnot if they're looking down (though it has been observed that her "advice" does not lead to the best result, and more often than not results in more difficult and complicated situations for the person). Additionally, whilst she does not actively hide that she's a vampire, she also does not go out of her way to confirm that. But does make nerdy "full moon tonight, don't be out too late" type jokes.

Personality (+ 5, - 5): Psychopath. like, a real proper psychopath, not just as a word thrown around at homicidal maniacs or selfish dovchebags, she feels literally nothing, and not in a "cool girl" way, she can't feel anything, her brain's just not wired for it. She generally displays herself as a confident, intelligent, classy, and elegant, well-educated, proud European, and is seemingly easy to befriend and get along with so long as you like clever things and/or sarcasm. However, she's faking all of that. She doesn't really "feel" anything, and one could describe her as being "empty". Her entire personality has been meticulously built by herself over the centuries to best and most easily fit in with society and not draw unwanted attention to herself. All of her emotions and personality traits are things she's mimicking from people she's met, and she was doing so before she even became a vampire. Having been born a psychopath, she doesn't have the same emotional range that normal people do, she just can't feel anything, she's incapable of it. She has a complete lack of remorse and guilt, she doesn't even have the same "biological imperative" impulse that the rest of us have when it comes to blood relations and their safety. A majority of her relationships are superficial, based on physical attraction and/or mild amusement, but genuine and deep relationships is a struggle for her. Next to impossible, it's not that she doesn't want to care about pretty boy 57, it's just that she can't, also who cares about such disposable people anyway?. Having said that, it's not impossible for her to actually care, it's rare, extremely, but not impossible. In her entire life (which is nearing 500 years and including all potential plotting), she only formed a genuine bond with (up to) three people, and her own family is not on that list. So when she does genuinely care about a person, she's extremely protective of them, given how rare it is, and is excessively aggressive towards any she deems has or may harm them.

Nika is genuinely very logical and rational, and has a rather scientific mind. Or more one of a mad scientists'. She's extremely curious about the nature of humanity, and one can even say that she "enjoys" experimenting on them by forcing them into complex and difficult situations and observing how they react. She also has a tendency to experiment on herself, as a child she would harm herself, not out of a sui.cidal desire, but to see how much pain she could tolerate, if she would feel fear when she got close to death, if she would/could cry, etc. (she didn't cry, or get scared, but her heart rate went up sometimes, which was fascinating). When drugs became a thing, she took literally all of them at various doses and mixes just to see how it would affect her as a witch and a vampire. She also experimented on animals, she's stopped now, except with dogs, she kills them after the third annoying bark (I'm sorry, but she's a psychopath, that's what they do! TT_TT). She's never grossed out and probably too okay with blood and guts, and too good at dealing with it. Highly organized, and punctual, she displays a reckless and complete disregard for the safety of herself and others (with the exception of those whom she has a genuine bond with). She's a pervasive liar, deceptor, manipulator, and is quite narcissistic, and superficially charming. Whilst rage is not a common "emotion" she experiences, irritation is one that she can genuinely feel, and when genuinely irritated by something, she has a tendency to cause it immense physical pain before ultimately killing it.  

Any mental health issues: she's a genuine psychopath, whilst she doesn't think there's anything wrong with her, according to society, she's messed up.

I happened." - NBC's Hannibal, said by the titular character, and definitely something Nika would say because I'm a nerd who makes references. - "I have what used to be called an axis II personality disorder. When I kill you and them, I won't feel a thing." - okay, there isn't much context for her to use that now, but she totally used it before, or a version of it.   - "It's amazing how easily the human brain can be manipulated." - "You think I was damaged? Some childhood trauma? That's so sweet." - said by Root from Person of Interest - "You should know torture almost never produces good information. Well, almost never." - also said by Root, she has the best quotes tbh - "I bleed like everyone else, but I don't feel. My heart rate won't  even go up. Cut me open and let's see if I scream." - again, not something she has much opportunity to say now and days, but defs something she's said in the past. - "How arrogant of you to think that any of us are anything, but irrelevant." - said by greer, also from person of interest "You don't take over the world with gaudy displays of violence. Real control is surgical, invisible. It interferes only when necessary. " - also said by greer

Additional Information: - animals naturally fear her, some even go to extremes to avoid her, and dogs tend to bark at her whenever she passes by (part of why she hates them so much, also, should mention, they've been doing that since before she became a vampire. It's the psychopath they instinctively fear, well, now, the vampire too) - Seems to know every language there has ever been. - piano and violin (she had time to kill) - quite good at video games (where as I am trash), enjoys open-world/high fantasy games like The Witcher and Dragon Age

♣️ Family Background

Nika is from a mainly muggle family, her father was Ivan IV aka Ivan the Terrible, first official Tsar of all the Russias (later Russian Empire) and her mother was Anastasia Romanova of the House of Romanov (later became Tsars themselves until the Bolshevik revolution and establishment of the Soviet Union). Her father had multiple wives and mistresses, resulting in numerous siblings and half-siblings.

Through the union of her father and mother she had 6 full-blooded siblings, many of whom died in infancy; Anna Ivanovna, Maria Ivanovna, Dmitri Ivanovich, Ivan Ivanovich, Eudoxia Ivanovna, and Feodor Ivanovich (later Feodor I). She had two half-siblings from her father's later marriages, Vasili Ivanovich, born to her father's second wife; Maria Temryukovna, and Dmitri Ivanovich, born to her father's seventh and final wife; Maria Nagaya.

Nika maintained a mostly positive relationship with her father's numerous wives. Her mother died less than two years after her birth, so she didn't know her well, but a maid later admitted to Nika that the Tsaritsa was somewhat off put by baby Nika's lack of crying. With her step-mothers, she was well-behaved and polite, but she never cared for them. They provided no interest to her, and by the fourth wife, she began viewing them the same as mistresses or as toys, to serve a purpose and be quickly replaced with they failed in their purpose. She found his fifth wife; Anna Vasilchikova, enjoyable and even endearing to an extent, however, she didn't remain long and was quickly forced into nunnery.

As for her father, they had a somewhat contentious relationship. It was the 1500's, so there was the whole "women are less than men" thing going on, something which Nika never understood as a logical concept. She was always smarter, stronger, and more able than Feodor (her elder brother by just a year)since infancy (oh, also, she didn't like Feodor. She considered him weak, and a pointless existence who would've been better off as furniture). Regardless of that, however, they did get along on certain things, especially when it came to the Oprichnina and Ivan's darker habits, which she shared and initially some would say she inherited from him, until later seeing acts that outweighed anything even Ivan would dare to do. Their relationship later completely deteriorated when he killed her brother, and his heir, Tsarevich Ivan.

Ivan was always her favourite sibling. Of all the Tsar's children (excluding Nika herself, or rather Vasilia as she was called then), Ivan was best able to handle the Tsar's moods and behaviours, and similarly best able to handle Nika's psychopathy (the Tsar wasn't a psychopath, fyi, from what I've read, he was definitely paranoid, I would say paranoid schizophrenic, but they're not usually violent, and Ivan IV was super violent. It could've been due to the time period and the power he had, but meh. I'm not a professional, just a bad student). Anyway, back to little Vasilia and big brother Ivan. Out of all the others, he was the only one not immediately terrified by her darker tendencies, and even convinced their father to allow 11 year old Vasilia to join them during the Massacre of Novgorod, thinking (correctly), that she would enjoy it (she loathed when they retired to church for prayer though). Although he never fully realized how different she truly was, Ivan was the one who taught Nika to mimic her emotions and behave as a proper Tsarevna, and allowed her to express her displeasure and dislike, and every other "abnormal" emotion she experienced in private with him (some stuff which did freak the fu.ck out, especially, what she admitted to doing to the pet dog of a courtier she found annoying). Following Ivan's death and an argument with her father, she left Russia, but not before taking the cane Ivan IV used to kill Ivan with and burying it in the latter's tomb with him.

♣️ Family Affiliation: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Slytherin House, Russian Ministry of Magic, Rurik Dynasty, House of Romanov, Russian Throne, Koldovstoretz, The Bolsheviks, The Society for the Tolerance of Vampires in London (she joined jokingly, but they still haven't grasped that),    

♣️ Socio-economic status: confusing. She seems to have a lot of money, but her pay from Hogwarts is not enough to cover all her tastes and material objects. Few dare to question her, but for those few who do, her answer for where her money comes from is simply "history"

Quick facts:

Born in 1558 (February 3, though she claims she's forgotten the exact date), she is the last daughter of Tsar Ivan IV with his first wife; Anastasia Romanovna. At birth, she was given the name Vasilisa Ivanovna, and was an odd infant from the get go. Whereas her numerous other siblings cried, she never did, even as an infant, which unsettled her mother, though her father was pleased by it. As she aged, she began to realize she was different than her peers, and not just because of her position. She was indifferent to their fears about wars, and was not easily distracted by shiny things or "cute" animals as they always were. Some maids would joke behind her back that she was "undead" child, as she never displayed any joy or interest, or any emotion really. She would only animatedly chat with her elder brother, Ivan. However, Vasilia truly came alive upon her father's creation of the Oprichnina. She was only a child when it was formed, less than 10 (between 6-7), but would attend every execution, and was noted to have had a chilling grin on her face as the "traitors" (as labelled by her father) were killed one by one.

Nika discovered magical abilities at age 5, when a playmate brought over her new puppy to show Nika and the other royal/noble children. It's barking was driving Nika mad, and it suddenly lost it's voice. She later developed more control over her abilities, using them to slow down blades as it moved through someone's neck, framing annoying maids and servants for theft, sometimes setting them on fire. Ivan was the first to find out about her magic, and out of fear that she may be burned, did his best to hide her magic. They were found out by their father's third wife; Marfa Sobakina, whose mother was a witch (making her a squib). Instead of being ratted out, however, Marfa was able to convince the Tsar to send Nika to a far away boarding school, excellent for girls of "her" nature, and refining her into a lovely young woman, instead of the oddly, blood thirsty child people feared her to be.

Although beginning at Koldovstortez, she flourished there, particularly when it came to the dark arts and dueling, she had an uncanny knack for using any potion and/or spell to cause harm to others, both physical and emotional. After completing her education, she never pursued a career in the magical world, she was a vital piece on the chessboard of royal problems, and instead fell in line with her siblings, marrying a muggle boyar of her father's choosing (she has forgotten his name at this point though. Nikolay? Dmitri? Viktor? She can't recall), however, she was simultaneously engaging in an affair with a woman named Maria Dolgorukaya (regarded by history as an entirely fictitious wife of Ivan IV), who was secretly a vampire, drawn to muggle court games. Together they disgraced and ruined many nobles, a number of whom lost their heads to her paranoid father. Whilst their relationship was passionate and explosive (especially for other people), the true extent of Nika's care for Maria remains unknown, she was more than expendable to her, but she certainly did not "care" for her in the way that she did for her brother. They engaged in an argument, which eventually grew physical and resulted in Nika's turn into a vampire and Maria's corpse floating in the river (it's unclear how she died though). About a year later, her brother died too and she left Russia.

Before 1692, Nika spent a lot of time in the muggle world, particularly in royal courts, and "played" various roles, including; advisor, mistress, royal mistress, seductress, assassin, tutor, governess, maid, agente provocatrice (a female who entices one to act criminally and/or against their best interest), noblewoman, damsel in distress, and damsel doing damage. After the International Statute of Secrecy became law, she left the muggle world for a while, engaging with the newly cut off wizarding world, and she found real joy in settling into their small tight-knit communities and stirring up drama (ala desperate housewives). However, that thrill only last for so long, and she turned her attention back to the muggles.  In 1888, she ran about Whitechapel, in London, England, as the infamous and still unidentified (to the rest of the world) muggle serial killer; Jack the Ripper. Masquerading as a nurse at the time, she killed only the canonical five, and her spree was initiated by interest in police procedure and behaviour. Following the thrill of the chase, she ended up back in Mother Russia, where she took part in Bloody Sunday, also known as Red Sunday, Jan. 22, 1905, and fired upon the unarmed demonstrators as a member of the Imperial Guard. She later changed her identity and became a member of the Bolsheviks, and took an active role in the Revolution of 1917. She became an informal member of Lenin's cabinet, and was the original person to set the Romanov execution into motion, though, it was never traced back to her, and they were also distant cousins of hers.

During Soviet Russia, she based herself in Sverdlovsk (present day Yekaterinburg), where she created a sort of cult of vampires, dark magic, and murder. Whilst the humans made Sverdlovsk an economical powerhouse, she made the city a hub of supernatural superiority, deviance, and debauchery. It was impossible to walk two steps without running into one supernatural being or another, most of whom were vampires and/or dark wizards. She spent the longest amount of time in Sverdlovsk, as compared to the rest of her vampire life, living there from 1925 - 1989. Having grown bored, she allowed hunters and whatnot to enter the city and "cleanse" it, whilst she escaped and moved elsewhere in Europe. After acquiring the identity of "Dominika Vororina", she accepted the offer of a position as a professor at Hogwarts, mostly of out renewed boredom with the muggle world.  

Additional Information: - despite having lived for nearly 500 years, she's never stepped foot in the united states.   - most of Nika's life is defined by involvement with muggles, she's never really had any close ties to the magical world, which also allows her to more easily hide the nations worth of bodies and mayhem in her past

Hogwarts school stats: n/a She never attended Hogwarts as a student, however, Nika is an alumni of Koldovstoretz, where she held a dark reputation, even as a Russian in the late 1500's. She was rumoured to practise dark magic (of the illegal and murderous variety) and consort with a displaced group of dark wizards from the recently sacked Novgorod Republic (ironically, it was her father that sacked them anyway). Largely, she was a solitary student, though in later life she would claim that's because they were scared of her station (whether or not this is true is up for debate, as she uses a wistful tone and has an expression of "struggling to hold back laughter" on her face).  

Any Pets?: none, animals fear her. Especially dogs. And she in turn loathes those grimy mutts. She does like dragons though, and they're the only known creatures not to instinctively fear her or attack on instinct.

Boggart: it appears in it's true form before her or simply takes her shape, as she is a genuine psychopath who does not feel real fear. She's never disclosed it's appearance to anyone though, originally it was out of a need to keep her psychopathy hidden, later, simply "just 'cause", and a desire to forever leave the suckers (everyone else) guessing.

Amortentia: Amortentia potions don't emit any scent for her, as a psychopath, she is incapable of emotions like love. Whilst it's not completely impossible for her to form a genuine bond with someone, a lot of that is dependent on what that person does for her, like an uncle teaching her to hone her abilities or explore her psychopathy. Those genuine bonds are always selfish on her part, and exceedingly rare. She can't feel love the same way as normal people, she didn't even form a bond with her parents, and doesn't experience attraction (of the romantic and/or sexual kind) in the same way that regular people do.

Affinity to any particular magic? - wandless magic (she's quite proficient with it, and rarely uses a wand at all) - nonverbal spells - whilst talented with dark magic in general (she's a psychopath, how else will she magically experiment on living things), the cruciatus curse is probably her favourite, and she can perform it both nonverbally and wandlessly.

Additional Information: - although many things about Nika have changed over the centuries, including her name, her wand is the only thing that remains unchanged from when she first obtained it in 1571

Top 5 Shipping moments of 2014

OK, time for 2014 - this one’s a personal favorite with me, TBH. So many OTPs and ship wars to talk about! 

#5. STEVEN UNIVERSE INTRODUCES FUSION

Rebecca Sugar’s Steven Universe didn’t get into the canon gay magic until 2015, but 2014 was nice enough to introduce us to the concept of ‘fusion’, in which people can unite into one singular being that represents their relationship. This feels like the greatest thing for shippers since now you  can actually turn your ship into a character! Think about it - every single pairing you’ve ever wanted to see together can be transformed into a fusion personality that represents the ship! Steven Universe is in many ways ‘Relationships The Show’, and there are a wide variety of relationships to choose from - romantic, familial, functional, dysfunctional - so naturally shippers are drawn to it, big time. 

#4. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER ROBIN & BARNEY’S BAD BREAKUP

The controversial HIMYM finale is one of the biggest Shipping fanatics of all time. The Swarkles outrage wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t a win, but it’s still incredibly notable; and we did get both Robin and Barney marrying, and Ted and the Mother FINALLY meeting. Then they had to go and tear it all apart. I mean, seriously, the ending of this show feels like the biggest ‘Eff you’ to the shipping fanbase/audience since One More Day. Take your pick, really. And of course not just the Swarkles fans were pissed off at this ending; anyone who loved The Mother, after finally getting to really know her, learning her name and seeing her and Ted get together, got a gigantic slap in the face too. Hope your happy, Ted/Robin shippers. 

#3. HANNIBAL AND WILL’S BADBREAKUP

The ‘Red Dinner’ as it’s dubbed by Fannibals acts as the culmination to an entire season dedicated to shipping Hannigram hardcore. Season 2 of Hannibal aired in its entirety throughout 2014, and it was the season that truly turned Hannigram into a cultural phenomenon, shipped all over the place with fanfic/fanart blowing up the internet. The storyline is pretty complicated, but suffice to say: the two have a hardcore effed-up bromance going through the second half of Season 2, where Hannibal wants Will to join him as his partner in killing and Will pretends to go along with it to catch him. Or does he? But in the season finale, it all comes to a head with Hannibal learning about the betrayal and brutalizing/nearly killing EVERYONE, Game of Thrones style. Bad breakup doesn’t even begin to cover it.

#2. “I'M WITH YOU TO THE END OF THE LINE”

Ah, we get to it: My MCU OTP. Captain America the Winter Soldier launched the MCU’s new most popular ship when the mysterious Winter Soldier was unmasked as Steve Rogers’ childhood bestie Bucky Barnes. The tragic romance nature of Winter Soldier no doubt contributed to this ship’s popularity. The movie gave us tons to work with: From Steve saying of his dating life “It’s hard to find someone with shared life experience” (geez, who do we know who fits that description?), to the background music of the Winter Soldier’s attempt on Fury’s life (the first time Steve and Bucky are on screen again) being “It’s been a long, long time”; to the two of them recalling each other (’But I knew him”) and Steve’s rip-your-heart-out moment in the climax (”I’m with you to the end of the line”), there’s so much love to work with here. You can see why the hardcore shipping began. 

#1. KORRASAMI BECOMES CANON

It’s hard to overstate the shipping significance of Korrasami becoming canon in the series finale of The Legend of Korra. Not just that a gay pairing got to be together, but a fan-preferred couple, one that tumblr fans fell in love with in 2014 (Seasons 3 and 4 aired 2014) got to win, got to be together, and walk off into the sunset. True, this was one that didn’t get to be certain until the creators confirmed what was going on, but the excitement this one generated was absolutely breathtaking. And it’s not like people hadn’t noticed the newformed chemistry either; the ship truly took off this year, and got to sail while the excitement was at fever pitch. Did this start something new? Oh, I don’t know, did Steven Universe take that ball and run off with it in a Stronger direction only a few months later? You bet it did.

Can you give me your thoughts and headcanon on every band characters past, like there childhood? (Also I want to know your thoughts and headcanons on Hannibal?)

Hey! So I held onto this one for awhile because I was trying to figure out how to answer it while also keeping it at a moderate length. If you’ve been following this blog for awhile, you probably know I’m terrible at writing short answers and to write down everything I think about every character’s past is near impossible for me to fit into one ask. I’m also not much of a hc person…I tend to think of scenarios before I think things like “HC that ________ cooks _______every morning for breakfast” so idk how well I’m going to be able to do this. I’ll give it the college try tho with a disclaimer that I could probably write 1000+ words on all of these but I’m going to abbreviate things for this ask. Answer under the cut!

Noodle: I’m assuming you mean before she joined Gorillaz? I have more questions than answers about that part of Noodle’s past, and I don’t particularly have any strong feelings that it should be any which way. Who were her parents? Did they giver her up to be part of the experiment? Or did they not have a choice? Was her life up until age 10 like, relatively normal? I’m guessing she grew up with the the other children, so maybe daily life was similar to a boarding school setting with all the classes focused on combat and military strategies. Or maybe her parents did play some role in her life and she actually stayed with them when she wasn’t at training. And what eventually made the government label a group of children  “too dangerous” to the point of where they had to be killed? This adds a bit of a disturbing element to it because it makes you wonder what they knew, what their capabilities were and what sort of mind set the training was instilling into these really young kids. I’ve often wondered whether Cyborg Noodle was meant to be a reflection of what Noodle could have become, and I’ve always thought it would have made for an interesting arc to have her struggle between her super soldier self and the self she became growing up with the band.

Russel: I have some issues with Russel’s backstory tbh, mostly because it feels a little bit lazy and because of the presence of stereotypes. There *are* some really interesting elements to build upon though. I like to think the school he attended in Brooklyn was a school for the arts, and that he had a variety of friends who experimented with a wide range of music styles. Also, Brooklyn is known for being like, a hub of culture so I also like to think he and his friends had certain record stores and restaurants they frequented, and that this helped Russel cultivate a lot of the sophisticated taste in fashion, food, music etc. that he exemplifies when we meet him in Phase 1. I also like to think that they had their own jams session together, and that many of his friends were aspiring musicians themselves. And think that in some ways, Russel sees the same sort of magic he experienced with his friends in Gorillaz, and it’s played some role in keeping him invested in the band, though evokes many complicated feelings for him. Though it seems to have been dropped, I also believe Russel is/was pretty religious, or at least he was in Phase 1. I always tend to think of him having an interest in spirituality, and that this helped him process his friends’ deaths. That being said, I see him as someone who views religion with a critical eye, especially as he seems to have become more wary of the world (per some recent interviews). 

2D: Aw. 2D had the most mundane upbringing of everyone. I know I’ve said talked about this or written this out before, but I’ll place it here too but I’ve always seen him as having been very close with his parents, particularly his dad who was (for me at least) the driving force behind his creativity with keyboards and instruments. IIRC, his father allowed him to watch and help him with the various fairground equipment. I like to think that as 2D got older, he was also able to close up the fair, and sometimes he would sneak his friends onto the fairgrounds after dark where they would sit among the vacant rides and tell each other creepy stories. His hometown, again, if I’m not mistaken, is relatively rural so the night sky was always crystal clear. And honestly? This comes out of nowhere but I’ve always like to think 2D did or does have an interest in stars and outer space. He used to want to be a storm chaser when he was younger, loved zombie movies, there seems to be an interest he has in the unknown. So idk, I like to add on that he also had this weird interest in alien conspiracies and reading about all the ridiculous things that happen on the different planets.

Murdoc: There’s a lot to say about Murdoc’s childhood but what I’m going to focus on here is that it was soul crushingly lonely and I’m honestly awe struck at time of just how he was able to semi-successfully push back at EVERYTHING that was hypothetically working against him. Murdoc’s father hated work, so I always take that to mean that he never had a steady job so the home was in a state of constant chaos- either there wasn’t food in the fridge, the electricity got turned off, the water was turned off, there were sketchy people hanging around inside etc. Sometime his father would just up and leave be gone for day, some days he’s would be passed out on the couch all day and other days he would just be incredibly angry and nasty. So everything was uncertain. And on top of that, we also know Murdoc wasn’t popular in school or with people in general so he like, literally had no one, no secure attachments. So forming a sense of identity and self-esteem, and also processing the fact that he is human and wants to belong somewhere or mean something to someone; that was all on him. I think this drove a lot of his interest in Satanism and the occult because he was looking for something bigger than him to make sense of his life and also something dark enough to channel the anger and frustration that probably wasn’t safe to express at home. He became a bit of drifter as well, leaving the house for days at a time, which got him into situations at a young age that he wasn’t prepared to deal with (i.e. the diner lady) but also some people who helped him out. I always like to think he got his first bass from some random person, like, idk, some eccentric thrift store owner who had a bunch old crap that he started talking to about death metal one day and they just hit it off lmao. And we see some of that drifting today with how he gets lost in bars or says he’s “going out” and then the band can’t find him.

Hannibal: I don’t think about Hannibal that much tbh! I don’t think we ever learned their age difference, right? Personally, I always picture him as somewhere between 3-5 years older than Murdoc. I don’t really think he and Murdoc had that good of a relationship (there’s an anecdote that Murdoc tells in some interview from Phase 1 where he recounts a time Hannibal invited him to a concert just so his friends could beat him up and that he never got to see the show because he was unconscious) but they did have some rare moments of “bonding” (i.e. setting things on fire together, attempting to make their own bombs). Hannibal was in and out of jail and juvenile detention from a young age so Murdoc likely didn’t see him that often and eventually, Hannibal moved out. Still, I feel like Murdoc still like, occasionally hears from him, even though he doesn’t want to and it’s always like, pure mean-spirited trolling (for lack of a better word). Somehow, he always tracks down his number.
