ballerinas, figure skaters, dancers are dainty and disciplined. if they're tired, theyre not gonna give up! they'll keep going. sleeping is for the night.
you don’t eat because you’re bored, because it looks tasty, because your friends offered u food and you “dont wanna be rude” or because “why not”. you eat when you need to, to give your body energy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RULES
- eat twice a day!! breakfast, then choose either lunch or dinner. super low cal snacks are okay, like tea, gum and black coffee.
- it’s okay to fast if you’re not exercising tho.
- take vitamins/supplements!! you don’t want ur hair and teeth to fall out. id recommend iron, b12, zinc, calcium. or multivitamins are good.
- be tidy. keep your room clean, practice pretty handwriting, do skincare. focus on your schoolwork and yourself basically.
- remember to get a full nights sleep!! prevents acne and is good for your brain. (your body is probably very tired too)
- IF you MUST b1ng3, at least have something healthy, like fresh fruit or veggies. fast food is poison.

A random thought, during the Mr. Qi's Crop Challenge (you know the one were you have to plant and shipped 500 Qi Beans) how will the SDV/SVE Bachelors gonna react to their lover (the Farmer) planting this weird looking crop that looks like a blueberry with sunglasses across the farm fields. 😂
Ah, Qi beans... Probably my least favourite quest, because spending a whole month growing this stuff, and also getting these fucking beans instead of cool gifts in chests or fish.... Ugh. Oh well, sorry for that 😅
Even though this fruit is annoying to me, the ask itself regarding the reactions of others to it is pretty funny, hee hee. Thanks for the ask, and enjoy! 🫰💖
_________________________________________
SDV/SVE bachelors react to the Qi fruit:
"Looks creepy..... And cool, by the way. What did you do to make them grow like that?" Sebastian's spouse is a virtuoso at growing all sorts of unusual crops, and he thinks it's a mega cool ability. Just a week ago they ate a salad made from an 'ancient fruit', and the day before yesterday they cut up a giant mushroom crop that was the size of a large pumpkin (even though Sebby's doesn't like shrooms, it was still cool!). Now it's the weird fruit with sunglasses. He wonder what unusual plant Farmer will grow tomorrow...
"Oh, I know! Are those fruits and vegetables that grow in different shapes?" Sam recently watched a video about gardeners who grow square watermelons or tomatoes in the shape of hearts using plastic moulds. So the guitarist reckoned his spouse had decided to join the trend too. A strange choice, yeah, but hey - bonus for cool sunglasses! And what does this 'Qi' fruit taste like? Looks like a giant blue melon, Sammy wouldn't mind a tasty snack. Anyway, he doesn't know much about gardening himself, so he'll leave that to Farmer.
"Did you buy sunglasses for every fruit you grow or what?" And tell us, dear Alex - why would your beloved Farmer do that? These things maybe look like sunglasses, but are hardly sunglasses. But who knows? It's definitely an unfamiliar fruit for an athlete, especially compared to what his grandmother Evelyn used to grow in the community garden all the time. But if it's edible and full of vitamins (no), then Alex doesn't really care about the look of the Qi fruit. "Hey, even if this tastes awful, we'll have plenty of pairs of sunglasses!"
"That's some ugly ass fruit right here. Do people really eat that stuff now?" Truth be told, while working at JojaMart, Shane had managed to see stranger products labelled as 'novelty'. This applied not only to obscure sauces and snacks of dubious origin, but also to fruits and vegetables. The blue colour of the "Qi" fruit Farmer grew generally gave Shane the idea that his spouse had purchased the seeds just from Joja.co. It looked strange, but Shane didn't even mind tasting it. If it's edible at all. This fruit certainly doesn't get any worse than Joja's 'special' sauce for nachos, of that he's sure.
"Honey, are you sure it's safe to eat?" Every time another crop of obscure origin ripens on the farm, Harvey's heart begins to pound with worry. What if it's poisonous? What if it's not handled properly and you could get food poisoning? Why is it such a strange shape? "Farmer, please..." The poor doctor goes through all the books on vegetables, fruits and berries, hoping to find some information about this Qi fruit and whether it's okay to eat it (spoiler - to no avail). Either it's another "healthy" product from Joja or something else. Either way, Harvey will be sceptical, to say the least.
"...If I understand correctly, my soul, this is our dinner for today?" Elliott could have sworn the fruit had just winked at him! The writer had heard that some farmers and gardeners deliberately grow their crops in a variety of shapes to make them look extravagant and sell them for more money, but... Of all the shapes, his spouse chose the face... But maybe that's the kind of crop that's in high demand on market right now. Elliott hoped that if they were to bake strudel with this 'Qi' fruit today, it would taste better than it looked. Also... sunglasses?
"Hmm, I wonder... Where exactly did you get those seeds, my love?" It is not appropriate for Lance to judge the strange crop that Farmer has grown, when the adventurer himself has a monster crop ripening in a corner on the farm, with an appearance similar to a huge eyeball. Nevertheless, this strange fruit arouses a share of suspicion in the pink-haired man. Something is not right here.... If his dear spouse doesn't mind, Lance would also like to take a look at this fruit, for he is very curious to know if this crop has any magical properties. Or anything that might threaten him or Farmer.
"This... thing is unnatural. What in the name of all spirits did you grow this abomination from?" Magnus's whole gut screams that this is not just a fruit, but the spawn of a dangerous mage or witch. Thin threads of dark magic emanate from this fruit, and the wizard certainly doesn't like Farmer being in contact with that magic. "Eat it? Absolutely not! And is it even edible?" A worried Magnus questions his spouse about who gave them these seeds and why. Hearing the name 'Qi', he sighs heavily. Mr. Qi. Of course... This name definitely promises a lot of chaos for everyone.
"Erm... That's wonderful, darling! You've managed to grow this, um... What's it called again?" Victor had spent two whole days in the town library and looked all sorts of books at home - not a single mention, about this mysterious 'Qi fruit'. It's not, to tell the truth, the strangest thing Farmer grew in their fertile fields (monster crops will always be at the top of the list for strangeness. Especially the one with the giant eyeball). Maybe it's some new fruit his spouse has discovered? Victor is sure the Farmer knows what they're doing. But yeah, he's supportive.

Time for another entry in the irregular Cooking With Oolong!
We’re gonna make something that started out of necessity, but ended up being tasty enough that I make it regularly, and for other people: Rice Bowl With Hangover Sauce. It’s full of vitamin b12 and is pleasantly spicy, which is always stuff I appreciate, and rice with things is the best category of foods, my mind cannot be changed. You don’t gotta be anemic or have overdone it the previous evening to enjoy, I feel like it would be great with a lot of things, and it’s v delicious.
Get your rice cooking, however you like doing that. I usually make big batches, so there’s leftovers for breaklunch.
Hangover sauce assembly:
Tumblr media
2 spoonfuls nutritional yeast
Add sesame oil and soy sauce, it should look like this: in terms of proportions:
Tumblr media
Add in your preferred amount of gojuchang:
Tumblr media
Mix with your fork until it’s a smooth, medium-thick paste
Add a spoonful of mirin. (Why are there no proper measures? Because I make this for breakfast, my coffee is brewing just to the side. Vibes for measuring.) Stir until it’s a nice runny sauce
Get your toppings. I usually don’t go this fancy, usually just an egg and green onions, but you know.
Tumblr media
Cucumber, cilantro, fre shavocado green onions on the rice
Tumblr media
Saucy
Tumblr media
Don’t be mean about my mangled egg, this is what happens when you take pictures:(

exactly one person asked for a men's list when it came to my cooking headcanons list for the ladies so here ya go!
Chris Redfield- Actually a decent home cook because he was old enough to want to give Claire some of their mom's cooking when he could. Unfortunately, any time he tries a new recipe for the first time he burns it. The second or third time things come out fine, but the first time he does something new he's opening windows to let out the pan smoke or returning to coals in the oven.
Barry Burton- His wife does all the cooking as he's hopeless in the kitchen, but since they got married she's never had to wash a single dish. He always made sure there's a working dishwasher in their house for when he's away too long to do his usual chore.
Albert Wesker- Can make the fanciest looking food in the world. We're talking Michelin star $100 a plate in appearance only. His dishes have zero flavor. They taste. No one understands how this happens.
Leon Kennedy- Breakfast King. I know the line in damnation is too overused, but breakfast is actually the easiest way to start learning how to cook. Box mix pancakes, bacon, sausage, and eggs, all require him to put something in a pan on low to medium heat with some oil and poke it around until it's done. There's little effort exerted in monitoring since that's half his real job anyway. Of course it translates to cooking. He's perfected the timing. Everything else is take-out though.
Carlos Oliveira- He had no idea how to cook until he got out of Raccoon City and went home to his family. He tried learning from his mama, but she'd always take the knife or pan from him, so he learned from a sibling and is pretty good at it. He makes a lot of marinades, so the blender is his friend.
Luis Serra Navarro- Absolutely under no circumstances does this man belong in a kitchen. He will concoct the most wretched smelling health food that's full of vitamins, minerals, and "a healthy dash of vinegar for flavor". He's wonderful to have at the dinner table, but never at the stove. Makes a real tasty cup of coffee though.
Jack Krauser- For some ungodly reason, this man can take someone's most hated foods and make them taste good. No idea what the hell he does to it as he will kick everyone out of the kitchen until he's done, but he's just like that. Barely cooks not because he hates it, but because he has to be in the mood.
Piers Nivans- He's the king of the grill. Will lecture anyone in earshot about the important difference between gas, charcoal, or wood when it comes to maintaining the flavor of the meat. He also believes salt and pepper are all you need for a great burger which must be cooked to medium at the hottest lest it lose it's tenderness.
Jake Muller- Salads, smoothies, and overnight oats, he's the one making meals that are able to be eaten fast or on the go. Fruit counts as a dessert to him. He does enjoy experimenting by eating the "weird" or most unfriendly tourist foods while he travels so he has something to brag about, even though he could never figure out how to cook any of it himself.
Ethan Winters- He tries his best. He'll help Mia in the kitchen with food prep or clean up. He makes good dips for chips, has a delicious cookie recipe, and researched how to make baby food for when Rosemary stopped being breastfed. This somehow translated into him figuring out how to make very good custards and parfaits. Although, he got super frustrated trying to figure out how to make bread and has given up the fight.
i will happily do this again for any characters not on either of my lists since i love cooking and baking, and this is fun to think about

Poor rabbits can't have anything. You can't even give them carrots or iceberg lettuce
You can give them like. A little bit of carrot. But yeah no iceberg lettuce.
He does eat fancy stuff like basil, spearmint and hibiscus flowers semi regularly though.
They're meant to eat grass and scrubs and twigs and stuff in nature. Like they might find the occasional fruit, but they mostly need dry grassy stuff with tons of fiber.
I just ordered fresh hay for him though, and got some relatively expensive green oats along with it, which are supposed to be really tasty for rabbits, and they're good for them because it's full of fiber and vitamins. Hope he likes it.
Rabbits also have to eat their special edible poops or they will get sick and die. It's a good time to be thankful that we don't have to eat our poops to survive 🙂‍↕️👍

Quock question! Any thoughts about melons?
Melons are really good for you! They're full of water so they're very good for hydration, and they contain vitamin A and C which are really good for things like eyesight and you immune system. They're also a good source of fiber so they help with digestion, and they're good at helping lower the risk of heart disease or other illnesses. I don't actually know what they taste like obviously but most describe them as tasty! They're super nutritious and a fantastic addition to your diet. 😊👍

💙🩵🦋✨My Skinny Plan and How I Lost 30+ Pounds✨🦋💙🩵
🔴❗️❌TW: ED, ANA❌❗️🔴
My plan:
Calorie Limits: Daily calorie limit is roughly 800, but absolutely no more than 1000. This is high restriction. There should also be one day a week or every 2 weeks where you eat a maintenance/metabolism diet. This calorie limit will be what is required to maintain your current weight. This will allow your body time to recover from the restriction and your metabolism will not stall.
Exercise: We know that the key to weight loss is expending more calories than you intake. With any type of restriction, you will be doing this without exercise. This is why exercise is not as important as your diet. I only do light exercise, like walking or light weight lifting.
Stay Consistent: Do not get discouraged. It will take time, but it will happen. Just keep it up. Take your time and do it well. No cheating.
Vitamins: Daily vitamins are essential. You are not eating enough, so you need to make up for it. Protein is ESSENTIAL. It takes more energy/calories to digest than it costs in calories. You will burn calories eating protein! Shakes are easy and tasty! Make a matcha latte out of a vanilla one!
Fast Food: You can have it, but you have to be smart about it. A kids meal at Chipotle is an easy 300 calorie meal and it is full of protein. It is enough for the whole day. Grilled nuggets at Chick-fil-A are so easy and tasty! About 200 calories for 8. You can eat out, but you must make a plan for it and stick to it.
Drinks: There is no reason to drink your calories if you can avoid it. Why drink a Coke when you can have a Diet Coke? Why have Gatorade when you can have Gatorade zero? What’s the point? Protein drinks are fine, as they are extremely filling and good for you. Full sugar soda is a no! They make diet and low sugar everything, just drink that!
Keeping Track: Keep track of your weight. After sleeping and going to the bathroom is the best time to do it. You will be at your base weight. Record it every day, even if you have gained. It is vital to see your progress or get you back on track. There are tons of great apps for it. You can track your weight in pounds, kilograms, BMI, etc. Always record your food. It’s not hard. You can even plan your meals ahead of time in your app. It’s so simple!
I am currently in a week long plateau. It feels as though I haven’t lost weight in years and I am beginning to feel discouraged. I know it will happen, I’m just worried. I will stay consistent and I will achieve my dreams. I am not underweight, but I will be.
🪩🕷️🚬🖤I will be SKINNY🖤🚬🕷️🪩
❤️💋🍓🌹I will be THIN🌹🍓💋♥️
🟠🍑🍊🧡I will be BEAUTIFUL🧡🍑🍊🟠
💚🍀🥝🍏I will be WANTED🍏🥝🍀💚
🔵🐳🦋💙I will be PERFECT💙🦋🐳🔵
🪻🟣🍇💜I will be GORGEOUS 💜🍇🟣🪻

PUMPKINS...Not just a decoration!
Tumblr media
Pumpkin carving is such a wonderful Halloween tradition! It brings families together for a fun, creative activity and leaves you with some fantastic spooky decorations to boot. But with Halloween is over  it’s important to remember that we don’t need to let our pumpkins go to waste. Did you know that in the UK alone, around 18,000 tonnes of pumpkins are discarded each year after being carved? That’s a lot of potential going in the bin!
At Roots and Vines, we’re passionate about reducing food waste, and our locally grown pumpkins are too good to waste. Here are some of our favourite ideas to help you make the most out of your pumpkin once the carving is done.
Delicious Pumpkin Recipes to Try
Pumpkin is such a versatile ingredient! Whether you’ve got a large pumpkin or just the leftovers from your Halloween creation, there are so many ways to use it.
Roasted Pumpkin: A simple but tasty way to enjoy pumpkin is by roasting it. Just slice it up, toss with a bit of olive oil, salt, and your favourite herbs, and pop it in the oven. It’s perfect as a side dish or tossed into salads.
Pumpkin Soup: Warm up those autumn evenings with a hearty pumpkin soup. You can blend it with a bit of cream, or keep it light with vegetable stock and spices like cumin or nutmeg.
Pumpkin Risotto: For something a little fancier, pumpkin risotto is a great option. The sweetness of the pumpkin pairs beautifully with the creamy, savoury rice.
Pumpkin Pie: Of course, we can’t forget about dessert! Pumpkin pie is a classic way to turn leftover pumpkin into something delicious and comforting.
Pumpkins for Your Pets
Did you know that pumpkin is a healthy, tasty treat for dogs? Full of vitamins and fibre, it’s great for their digestion. You can serve it raw in small amounts, cook it into a puree and mix with their regular food, or even freeze pumpkin cubes for a refreshing snack that’ll last longer. Just be sure to avoid any parts of the pumpkin that have been sitting out with candles or decorations, as these could be harmful.
Snack on Pumpkin Seeds
Don’t throw out those seeds! Pumpkin seeds make a crunchy, nutritious snack. All you need to do is scoop them out, wash them, and dry them. Toss them with a little oil and salt, then roast them in the oven until golden. For a bit of extra flavour, you can add spices like paprika, cumin, or even cinnamon.
If you’d rather share with the local wildlife, pumpkin seeds are also a hit with birds. Just make sure to skip the oil and salt if you’re offering them to your feathered friends. They’ll thank you for it!
Composting Pumpkins
If you’re done with your pumpkin and don’t fancy eating it, why not add it to your compost heap? Pumpkins break down easily and are full of nutrients, making them a great addition to your compost bin. Simply break it up into smaller pieces and let nature do the rest. Bonus: worms absolutely love pumpkins, so your garden will thrive!
This Halloween, let’s all do our bit to reduce food waste. Whether you’re turning your leftover pumpkin into a warming meal, treating your pet, or giving your compost a boost, there are plenty of ways to make sure nothing goes to waste. Pop into Roots and Vines for your locally grown pumpkins, and don't forget to check our website for more recipe inspiration!
Happy carving, and happy cooking! 🎃

Maggi Mjói Borðar Ekki Mat (Maggi Mjói Doesn't Eat His Food)
Tumblr media
I am back again with another translation here we go ...
First of all, I promised to do the rest of these like 3 years ago and I never did. But I do still have the scans and I fully intend to actually finish this time.
Obligatory disclaimer: I don't speak Icelandic and I heavily rely on google translate / online dictionaries to do these, so be aware that they may not be the best translations ever.
You can find more of my translations on my blog :)
Tumblr media
Every morning, Maggi Mjói wakes up late. Not just late, but much too late: If he gets out of bed, he is always sleepy.
Tumblr media
On the way to school, he falls asleep standing up. And if he gets there, he falls asleep sitting down. Or on top of his school books …
Tumblr media
He is so weak that he can hardly lift his cutlery unless they are made of plastic. No wonder, because he eats nothing but cocoa puffs all the time.
He doesn't want: delicious carrots … wholesome fish … high-fibre bread …
tasty tomatoes … or anything else that is healthy and good.
Tumblr media
This is not enough. Íþróttaálfurinn only just manages to save Maggi from drowning in his bowl of cocoa puffs.
Tumblr media
"You lack all nutrients and energy because you only eat junk food and not healthy food."
"You need fish for your muscles, vitamins from vegetables, fish oil for your joints, grains for digestion, milk for your bones and teeth, and water for everything else in your body."
Tumblr media
"I will write up a menu for you with foods that are chock-full of energy.
Start with breakfast. It is the foundation for the day and must never be skipped. Then regularly eat lunch, bread or fruit at snack time, and dinner."
Tumblr media
Maggi Mjói listened to Íþróttaálfurinn, did as he said, and swelled with vigor and energy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it for this one. I feel so slack for having taken this long to continue, but here it is. I have 4 more of these mini storybooks to translate.

A universal symbol for joy, hope and life force energy, the sunflower’s various healing properties are often forgotten about as a result of its iconic, radiant appearance and symbolic power.
Sunflower seeds are the most popularly used part of the plant, and can be eaten raw, cooked, or, most commonly, made into a seed oil for cooking and dressings. Full of healthy fatty acids, vitamins and proteins, the seeds are known for reducing cholesterol, improving heart health and nourishing skin and hair. But the seeds are not the only part of this plant which can be used in food and medicine – in fact, the whole sunflower plant can be utilised, from root to petal! An infusion of the leaves and/or petals is astringent, diuretic and expectorant (meaning it can help reduce mucus in the chest), and has been used traditionally to treat various ailments, including fevers, coughs, diarrhoea, respiratory issues and malaria. A poultice of the leaves applied to the skin can be used to treat and soothe bites, sores and swollen areas.
As for culinary uses, you can steam and serve up sunflower buds as you would artichoke (which is a member of the same family!) and young sunflower heads can be grilled for a tasty, versatile treat (remove the petals and brush off the buds first). The seeds are a versatile kitchen staple which can be added into stir-fries, made into a nut-free ‘nut butter’, used instead of nuts in homemade pesto, ground into a flour or sprinkled over porridge and breakfast cereals. Roasted in the oven for 10 minutes with some olive oil and a little ground cumin and sea salt, they make for a delicious topping on salads and other dishes. A simple way to reap the benefits of the sunflower is to buy a high quality, cold-pressed, organic sunflower seed oil. However, when cooked at high temperatures, sunflower seed oil may produce toxic compounds, so it is best enjoyed uncooked in dressings and dips. A herbal infusion of the leaves and/or petals is another easy way to get the benefits of sunflower, and, like an uplifting cup of sunshine, it is bound to put a smile on your face too!

Make room for mushrooms this week as National Mushroom Day is observed every year on October 15th! Fall is the perfect time to celebrate the fascinating world of fruiting fungi, as the damper, cooler conditions usher in prime time for a host of these deliciously tasty morsels.
Mushrooms can provide a wonderful substitute for meat and seafood in many recipes, including your Thanksgiving and holiday spreads. We carry fresh mushrooms in all our farmers market locations, where you can find them being sold by our dedicated mushroom vendors and at some of our diversified farmstalls.
We recently chatted with Ted Hall from Mushrooms.NYC to learn more about their grow spaces in the southern Catskills and the range of edible mushrooms they produce year-round.
How did Mushrooms.NYC get started?
I have a background in climate policy studies with Columbia University Earth Institute, while my wife Anne was a chef. We are passionate about food security and access, regenerative farming and nutrition health and education. In 2017, we were expecting our second child and had started an urban farm in Far Rockaway. We found out about a mushroom farm in New York City that was looking for soil and needed help turning around its operations to stay afloat.
Tumblr media
Anne expressed interest in taking over the reins of this farm and working with restaurants to supply them with locally grown, gourmet fresh mushrooms, while I managed the on-the-ground aspects. We took a leap of faith and, along with another friend, we were able to turn around the operation from losing money to becoming economically viable. According to Cornell Cooperative Extension's Urban Agriculture and Small Farms program we were the first and only mushroom farm in all five boroughs as of 2019!
Unfortunately, we had to demolish our New York City grow space during the lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic. We moved our operations to Ellenville, NY where we currently employ a team of nine people. Mushrooms.NYC is part of a Baha'i "Storehouse Cooperative” so we continue to share our profits and vital resources with everyone in Manhattan who we’ve worked with before.
What type of mushrooms do you cultivate year-round?
We have one small, highly controlled indoor grow space and another larger space that’s less regulated like a ventilated greenhouse using natural sunlight and heat to keep things from freezing in the winter.
Tumblr media
Both areas are set up to be as passive as possible and use the least amount of energy while working with the existing weather patterns. These spaces allow us to consistently produce mushrooms year-round using a hands-on approach that is a lot less automated and energy intensive than other mushroom growing operations. Winter is always a bit trickier though as we have to use heat when conditions get really cold.
We organically cultivate many kinds of mushrooms that are packed with essential vitamins, compounds and minerals that support healthy individuals. All our mushrooms provide Vitamin B-12 when they are slow-cooked:
Shiitake: Shiitake mushrooms feature all nine amino acids which make them a full and complete protein and a great substitute for animal-derived protein.
Oyster (Blue/Silver, Brown, Gold, Pink, White): These common culinary mushrooms are prized for their delicate texture and mild, savory flavor. Oyster mushrooms also provide a full protein.
King Oyster/Trumpet
Lion’s Mane: These beautiful mushrooms look like waterfalls or icicles. When blanched in salted water, lion's mane mushrooms take on the flavor and texture of succulent shellfish such as crab or lobster, so make a great plant-based substitution.
White Coral: A relative of lion’s mane that’s more textured. It’s harder to cultivate so we don’t always have it.
Pioppino: An Italian species that’s also known as Black Poplar Mushroom or Velvet Pioppini. These mushrooms are very flavorful, almost like a taller, slender shiitake. Their flavor spreads on everything to just cover a dish.
Black Pearl: A species that lies somewhere in-between a King Oyster/Trumpet or a Blue Oyster.
Hen of the Woods: This species also provides a full protein but it’s very tricky to cultivate. But we just had our first successful cultivation using spores sourced from growers in Pennsylvania!
For our indoor cultivation, we use a growing medium made up of milled hard woods and certified organic grain that is the by-product of other operations. We were using propane to pasteurize our medium, but, in our ongoing quest to become more sustainable, we have switched to electric-generated steam. We would ideally like to convert the process to using solar or biogas, or even methane if we can do it in a well-ventilated area.
Tumblr media
We also have outdoor cultivated growth in a forested area just under an acre in size that mimics a natural environment, which means we must watch for pest activity. These mushrooms are grown in substrate that’s free of contamination from other spores, so we know exactly what species we’re harvesting. The mushrooms are watered entirely by natural precipitation and are loaded with Vitamin D thanks to their exposure to natural sunlight.
Tumblr media
We grow Gold and Silver Oyster, Lion’s Mane, Pioppino, Shiitake and sometime White Coral in this outdoor space. We can even produce a small amount of blue oyster and shiitake outside towards the end of winter as long as there is a little bit of snow melting during the daytime. These winter mushrooms are insanely tasty!
However, late spring and late summer-early fall are the sweet spots for mushroom growing, both indoors and outdoors. There is a big explosion of forage during these periods and our operations line up much better with the climate at that point.
What types of mushrooms do you forage for?
We’ve always foraged for wild mushrooms, but up until recently we were just doing it recreationally. Two years ago, we were able to obtain a license to forage nationally, which is not easy to come by as most folks only have a state foraging license.
Foraging has become more challenging these days as there are now commercial entities that are over-harvesting wild mushrooms and shipping them in from the west coast. There’s a lot of pressure to over-harvest mushrooms for profit. Some recreational foragers are also harvesting so much that it’s destroying the ecological integrity of the mushrooms' ecosystems.
Tumblr media
Mushrooms.NYC is committed to harvesting our wild forage in a way that’s sustainable and sensitive to the ecosystem surrounding our farm. We are a mission-driven cooperative so are not trying to sell as many mushrooms as possible. The way we forage is a lot more labor intensive and less extractive, so the quality of our harvest is higher and relatively more expensive.
In addition to the pressures of over-harvesting, wild mushrooms are also sensitive to climate change. Mushrooms need snow as part of their lifecycle. Because of temperature change here in the Catskills, the winter-round snowpack is receding and has retreated to higher and higher elevations. A lot of well-known patches that had been there for generations are not producing edible mushrooms anymore. We are seeing a lot of erosion in our intact forests which is an indication that their mycological foundations are starting to give out. This means we are having to venture higher up each year to find our wild mushrooms.
Tumblr media
We haven’t had much luck with Morels. We were able to find a small number last year, but it wasn’t enough to bring to the farmers market. However, we do collect and sell several types of locally foraged wild mushrooms including:
Black Trumpet
Chaga
Chanterelles
Chicken of the Woods
Coral
Hen of the Woods
Honey
Lobster
Reishi
Turkey Tail (we forage for several medicinal varieties)
Regional varieties like Bolete that are super tasty!
Thank you, Ted, for sharing these fascinating and fun fungi insights. In addition to their variety of fresh, gourmet mushrooms, and as part of their mission to spread access to fresh, nutritious food, Mushrooms.NYC also sells ready to fruit “grow blocks”. These kits are as easy as growing basil and will fruit for a couple of years so you can grow your very own culinary mushrooms at home.
