Love of the Ainur: Finwë & Manwë
[for Day 1 of Ainur Week, hosted by @ainurweek, also a continuation of a fill for @silmkinkmeme]
“Manwë,” Finwë said, a heart-felt prayer to the chief of the Valar who had granted his kin entry into Valinor and who saw all from atop Taniquetil. “Lord of Valar, if ever I’ve earned some small favor from you, please keep your eye upon my son.” There was more to say, but he choked on the words.
A breath of wind tugs at his hair where it came loose from the braids.
This is Aman, he reminds himself. This is Aman, and bad things do not happen to children when they disappear. When a Teleri child too young to swim falls from the dock, a wave pushes them back to shore. When a Noldo child slips from the rocks while climbing, an eagle catches them. There are no terrible accidents. There are no terrible things hiding in the dark. They left those behind in Arda.
“Manwë,” he tries again. The wind pulls on him. He leans out the window. “Manwë—”
The wind howls into a tempest in his ears, drowning out his words. A strange weight suddenly grows in his stomach, and then he is no longer in the palace. He is no longer in Tirion. He is no longer in the mountains he’d claimed for his people. They are all passing away far below his feet.
He is terrified, but the wind takes his air and he cannot scream.
As suddenly as it began, the journey finishes.
Finwë stands on shaking legs in the center of a great room. The ceiling is domed and so far above his head that as he looks up he thinks he sees clouds under it. This is Ilmarin atop Taniquetil, he realizes and sinks to his knees on the polished stone of the great chamber.
There, above him and below the clouds, sits Manwë.
“Finwë,” says the Vala. His voice is as bright and as clear as the first time Finwë set foot in Valinor, carried there by Oromë. “Stand, friend.”

Varda Elentári
Varda (Quenya: "Sublime" or "Lofty"), one of the mightiest of the Valier and Queen of the Valar, was an Ainu and Aratar, responsible for situating the stars in the heavens above Arda. She was also known as Elbereth (Sindarin: "Queen of the Stars"), Tintallë ("The Kindler"),or Gilthoniel, and was the spouse of Manwë, with whom she lived in Ilmarin on the summit of Taniquetil in Aman.

Day 4: Poetry & Birdsong | Taniquetil
Tumblr media
A bit of sadness and ominous foreshadowing, how about that?
This can be read as a direct sequel to the Day 3 drabble <3
Lots of love from me!
Words: 100
Characters: Finwë & Fëanor, Manwë
Warnings: Doom about to strike
Tumblr media
“Listen!” Finwë whispered, holding his young son’s hand firmly ensconced in his own. “Do you hear the ephemeral poems of love and life the wind pens into the ever-shifting sky?”
He remembered the solemn silence of his earliest days and thus relished the cryptic but deeply touching messages of wisdom Manwë graciously sent down from Taniquetil on invisible wings.
“Birdsong?” Curufinwë scoffed disdainfully. “How boring!”
Helpless in the face of the overwhelming anger of his darling half-orphan, Finwë shrugged uncomfortably.
“May you come to cherish even these tiniest of gifts,” he cautioned. “May the quietude of loneliness never assail you.”

For today’s topic of Manwë Week, some HCs about Taniquetil (and Ilmarin, specifically):
- The palace complex is huge. It houses a great number of permanent residents (Manwë, Varda, their Maiar) and also has many rooms set apart for visitors.
- Ilmarin is not just the seat of the king; it also functions as a centre of learning, something akin to a university but with less of a hierarchical power structure. As such, it houses a renowned library, where one can find not only Ainur and Elven works, but also a selection of Mannish literature.
- The throne room is an incredibly majestic sight: the high ceiling reflects the ever-changing sky; the long, marble pillars seem almost transparent; the walls feature detailed mosaics representing the most important events in the history of Arda (among the various scenes, a portrait of Melkor can still be spotted, unscathed and unharmed). Manwë’s and Varda’s thrones are framed by lifelike sculptures of the Two Trees.
- Ilmarin’s many windows are huge and generally remain open, so the winds can easily traverse through the entire complex and birds can flutter inside and out. (The temperature inside the palace is agreeable, though; Manwë makes sure that it doesn’t become too cold for his visitors.)
- The palace’s innumerable balconies provide people with amazing panoramic views of the entirety of Aman.

With how long elves live, and how mountains tend to erode and get shorter over time, do you think any of the really ancient First-Awakening-age elves ever noticed it? Would they have known enough about erosion to know why Ered Gorgoroth is less spiky than it used to be, or would they blame a Vala? Would they blame Morgoth? Or would they get curious enough to try and figure it out, only to learn that yes, mountains DO just shrink like that, and yes, it IS partially because they're so heavy that the (middle) earth's crust kinda just can't take it anymore and they literally sink back into the ground? (Real thing that happens IRL btw, please look it up geology is so cool)
I love the idea of elven geologists getting into really heated debates about plate tectonics and erosion, (yk Fëanorians would be all over that shit), but the idea of "DAMMIT MORGOTH, QUIT SHRINKING THE DAMN MOUNTAIN" being a valid explanation is also really funny.
