Reverse Gondolin Tyelpe!
outfit inspired by this post by @thelien-art
#silm#silmarillion#reverse gondolin au#celebrimbor#tyelpe#tyelperinquar#decided he goes by his quenya name for ondolindrim purposes#fun facts abt his design!#when he formally disowned the feanorians he switched bloodred for pale slate and gold for bright silver#and changed his accent colors to finwe's dark fuschia-red#his outfit is somewhat referencing turgons w the black underlayer and the light outer robe with red accents#the heraldic belt is somewhat referencing gils device since in the au lomion & tyelpe adopted gil#the pattern on the hem of the outer robe is similar to the YT valian fashion though the cut of the sleeves is a rev gondolin style#his hair is unusually short- at this point he wears it in a simple bun#he picks up his signature half style after lomions death :(#the double necklace thing forms a similar shape to the YT era mantles/shoulderpieces#and the shape of his second dark layer is like a more modern version of the heavily layered tirion style formalwear#basically his style is 'slightly updated finwe' in a darkened version of lomion's color palette#the feanorian star in silver is his specifically#the feanorian star in gold is feanor's#(sorry curufin you don't get your own star)#he also accidentally spawns a new linguistic rift via the addition of the Gondolin Accent to the Thorn Problem#gnomish seems to have some weirdness around th- words (ie sorontar (Q. N) /thorondor (S) /thorndor (G) )#so theres def going to be a fight or three over the gondolin/gnomish pronunciation in relation to therinde

also i finally finished the silm earlier and oh my god i understood narn i chin hurin so much better this time. like i know the whole thing isn't included but the fact the main parts are mentioned *after* i knew who the heck everyone in it was and where everything was happening made it so much more understandable now than when i first read it back when i was like 14 bc i went like hobbit -> lotr -> children of hurin with a lot of time in between where i forgot stuff
#bc i remember the first time i read it i was so lost like “where the fuck is doriath and dor lomin and all these places who are these..#..people. why wont turin come back. why does this man have to change his name every five seconds. whos morgoth?“ and so on#like i especially remember going “why is anglachel/gurthang like...evil. yeah you said this guy who made em is 'the dark elf' but what does#..“does that actually mean? he could just be goth i dont fucking know why we don't like him” and reading it now i was like Oh. Haha. Fuck.#i think its funny the main thing i remembered was being like “damn i love beleg and mablung”. past aimenel knew what was up#unrelated the hunting of the wolf was metal as fuck?????#i say that like it doesn't apply to so much in the silm but like. bro#i thought the whole “of beren and luthien” chapter was gonna be kinda boring bc i knew about most of the main stuff that happens already but#i was actually getting back into it all as i was reading#its weird i thought the audiobook would help but i think it was too slow#bc i had like ~8 hours left but reading it myself it took nowhere near that#i like hearing how people read for different characters and stuff and also i like knowing how things are pronounced bc even with the..#basic pronunciation thing in the back i still definitely fumble some names when i read them in my head lol. thinking about how many..#...different ways ive heard Eärendil for instance#or like not knowing for YEARS that dh is th.#dont get me started on how fucked up i probably read anything thats in there in adunaic#butchering every name in the akallabeth speedrun any%

Yes, I have finally watched tHe fINalE for TROP season 2. I'm not going to post about that yet ... but I do want to issue a heartfelt plea to Rings of Power fans:
Read The Silmarillion.
If you haven't already, please read it.
I'm saying this because SILM is important to me, is one of my long-time comfort reads, because it will enhance your enjoyment of what you see on-screen, and because it will most likely lead you to read a lot more in the Legendarium. Which will bring more fans who have more detailed background knowledge to this fandom.
I had a friend a few years back who was reluctant to read SILM etc. because she couldn't intuitively pronounce the place and character names. Not a problem! If that is what's holding you back, there are audio versions and you can go to sites like Tolkien Gateway to hear accurate pronunciations for everything.
Can you enjoy Rings of Power without that background knowledge? Of course. But imo it's so much better (and worse!) with exposure to the source material.
Do I think SILM is the be-all, end-all when it comes to Arda material? No, and I have some love-hate opinions about Tolkien's works in general, as we all do, but I do believe that if you are really enjoying this (or any) adaptation your experience will be greatly enhanced by reading (or listening to) The Silmarillion.

i was trying to sell a friend of mine on reading the silm. and i was like "it's shorter than lord of the rings," sent them a picture of the book, and meant to say "the last forty or so pages are just genealogies, glossaries, and pronunciation guides" what my phone autocorrected this too, though, was "the last forty or so pages are just genealogies, glossaries, and pronouns"
now i'm imagining you get to like page 293 of the silm and it's, like.
finwe - he/him miriel - she/they feanor - xe/xem orodreth - any pronouns

I wish you would write a fic where Elrond and Celebrimbor and Celebrian and Gil-galad and everyone gets to be happy and platonically/romantically in love.
Also, To Partake is lovely and I keep rereading bits and on three occasions this week I wishes there was a podfic of it so I could listen while cleaning.
An everybody-lives-nobody-dies polyamory AU would be the loveliest most self indulgent thing I think I would ever write. The idea of intrigues me and I feel like it would be a lot of fun, though if I were to do it I probably would write it more along the lines of my Silm interpretation of the characters (especially Gil). A couple oneshots would be fun.
I already have a vague concept in my head of a Valinor AU that includes a Celrondir + Gilrond OT4 situation. (With Cel and Lindir being sexual-romantic partners with Elrond, and everybody being platonic partners with Gil), so daydreaming about various OT4s that involve Elrond is not outside my realm of indulgence :D
He just deserves a polycule!!
Also with regards to a podfic I would love it honestly if someone podficced To Partake! I don't know that I trust my own reading and pronunciation to do it myself, but maybe someday...
Tell me on anon (or not) what fic you wish I'd write

15, 18 for silm asks
#15 (favorite ted nasmith painting) this was quite a hard choice i have to admit
At Lake Cuivienen
there's too much nostalgia when i see this painting for me to not list it as a favorite. It's the first one of his I ever saw, it's the artwork on my first copy of the silm and it's what drew me to pick up the book...this just hits a special spot in my heart every time i see it
there's so many to pick from!!!
#18 (what's the hardest name or word for you to pronounce?) i think I'll have to go back to when tolkien's world was still new to me. Pronunciation tends to come easily to me and I can't really recall names that are/were a stumbling block. Telperinquar I recall being one of the harder ones to figure out how to say, and then for it to roll off the tongue smoothly.
No different answer. Araw. The Sindarin name for Orome. I "know" how it sounds but I still can't really get it out of my mouth!
#as per my fashion i take forever to answer prompts i asked for#thank you!#first-son-of-finwe#silmarillion#gwed asks#ted nasmith#silm asks
