Queer Reads: NR Walker
Continuing our Pride Recs, we have another author from the Southern Hemisphere.
Tumblr media
N.R. Walker is an Australian author with quite a bit of range, and a solid backlog of books to read. Featured in the little graphic are EWB (Enemies With Benefits), Private Charter, Tallowwood, Three’s Company, and The Men From Echo Creek.
EWB, Private Charter, and Three’s Company are all contemporary romances. The first two are set in Australia, and the third is set in Florida. EWB is an enemies-to-lovers book that really did it for me. It’s emotional and funny, and Walker really pulls off the “I hate you, but sure I’ll fuck you” thing it has going on. Private Charter is about an executive who plans a romantic vacation with his boyfriend, who dips out last minute and wasn’t really that serious anyway, and leaves the MC on a yacht with a super hot captain sailing him around for two weeks. Also, he only packed a white swimsuit. Three’s Company is MMM with a couple and a third who hook up for a fling, and then develop all the feelings. It’s very sweet.
Tallowwood is much darker, with a serial killer, a detective, and a local constable. It’s definitely romantic suspense, and I was up late into the night finishing it, because you can’t go to bed half way through a serial killer book. Seriously.
The Men From Echo Creek is Walker’s first foray into historical fiction, but it’s Australian historical fiction, which was fun. Like, it reads like a pretty standard western setting (for US readers), and then suddenly they’re eating wallaby for dinner. It’s sweet, and soft, and both of the MCs are absolute cinnamon rolls who deserve lots of hugs.
Walker has lots more contemporary fiction, some more romantic suspense, and hopefully in the future some more historical work, so go enjoy some good writing.
And folks, read queer all year.

currents.46[2024]
selections from my week in media [10-16 november 2024]
[ listening ]
[ loving ]
Taemin at the Korea Grand Music Awards - I'm obsessed.
[ reading ]
Tallowwood by N.R. Walker - mlm mystery romance set in Australia - One of this author's best.
[ watching ]
Every You, Every Me, ep 5-6 - My favorite story yet and I'm bummed there's only one story left, assuming they do another two episode run. I love the concept of this show and I think they really did a great job with it.
The Hidden Moon {finished: 3 stars} - Finally, in the last three episodes, we find out what the heck is going on. Apparently, everyone's dead except for the ghost. I wish the acting had been better and the plot tighter (10 episodes actually felt too long by the end, weirdly). And I, of course, would have loved a reincarnation meet cute epilogue, because it is more than a little sad that Khen briefly met reincarnated Mas in the future and had no idea.
The K2 {finished: 4 stars} - I can't believe I forgot how whump-tastic it is. And Madam is a fascinating character. She dominated every scene she was in.
The Legend of Vox Machina, s3 ep 6-12 {finished: 5 stars} - My favorite season yet. This series is so good, but this season in particular was emotional and dramatic in the best ways.
Peaceful Property {finished: 5 stars} - What a great wrap up to a great series. Somewhat predictable, but excellent all the same. I am adding this drama to my Halloween watchlist. It's definitely one of the highlights of my viewing year.
Perfect 10 Liners, ep 3 - Within the first three episodes, we've had cautionary tales about both road rage and drunk driving. What's next? Or will one or both be recurring themes? Arm and Arc are both ridiculous in their own ways and I'm loving the romcom-y nature of the performances. Book's style of slapstick is somehow really working for me, when usually I'd be supremely annoyed (the spittake in episode one(?) is going to be a highlight of the series). I cannot take either of the characters seriously because the show is clearly going all in on the tropes. The drawback to that, of course, is that if the other couples are more serious and have deeper storylines treated more seriously, then the disparity is going to be really obvious and clunky. So, fingers crossed they keep it fairly light across the board and avoid that.

Oh, right!
If anyone's interested, I've actually started a remake of an old fic I orphaned a while ago.
(I orphaned it due to drama in the fandom, you know how it is- but I just couldn't bear to leave it like that, so I'm working on this re-make with edits and All New chapters!!)

Eight Australian houses with sculptural shapes and angular facades
Tumblr media
Our latest roundup showcases innovative Australian homes, including a house with a fish-pond atrium and a residence with a faceted black-metal extension. Mostly located in Melbourne and Sydney, these eight homes are united by their sculptural designs. While some have unusually shaped floorplans, others use detailed facades, cantilevers, roof cutouts and geometrical aluminium awnings to create eye-catching details. Read on for eight examples of sculptural Australian houses from Dezeen's archive:
Tumblr media
Photo by Timothy KayePeninsula House, Flinders, by Wood Marsh Designed to echo Australia's "windswept" coastline, this home south of Melbourne has curving walls of charred timber and rammed earth. Local studio Wood Marsh also drew on meandering paths leading to the site when creating the shape of the house, which has a curving form with long "arms" wrapping a swimming pool terrace and a driveway. Find out more about Peninsula House ›
Tumblr media
Photo by Shannon McGrath and Timothy KayeSt Martins Lane, Melbourne, by Matt Gibson This Victorian home in the South Yarra suburb of Melbourne was given a sculptural update with a faceted extension clad in black metal. Architect Matt Gibson decorated the facade of the extension, which contains a living space, two bedrooms, a study and a cascading terrace, with a laser-cut pattern that references the original architecture of the house. Find out more about St Martins Lane ›
Tumblr media
Photo by Rory GardinerMossy Point home, New South Wales, by Edition Office A cutout roof animates this fibre-cement-clad home, which architecture studio Edition Office elevated on parallel blockwork walls within a woody area in Mossy Point. The aperture in the roofline, designed to resemble a bird's mouth, creates a sheltered outdoor dining space. A void at the centre of the roof lets natural light into the gabled building. Find out more about Mossy Point ›
Tumblr media
Photo by Tom RossMerricks Farmhouse, Melbourne, by Michael Lumby Architecture and Nielsen Jenkins Concrete blocks were used to construct Merricks Farmhouse, a home designed as a "refuge" in an exposed coastal setting on the Mornington Peninsula. South African studio Michael Lumby Architecture and Brisbane practice Nielsen Jenkins gave the home strong geometrical shapes by splitting it into a series of blocks that surround a courtyard. Find out more about Merricks Farmhouse ›
Tumblr media
Photo by David ChatfieldTallowood Cabin, Queensland, by Fouché Architects Australian studio Fouché Architects created the angular Tallowwood Cabin to cantilever over its plot on a Queensland hillside. Its top-heavy geometric form, clad in black-cement boards, balances on a concrete plinth. A sloping walkway leads into the house, which is designed to "disappear" into the surrounding bushland. Find out more about Tallowood Cabin ›
Tumblr media
Photo by Jack LovelProclamation House, Perth, by State of Kin The innovative facade of this Perth house was created by combining olive-coloured hemp render with aluminium awnings that add tactility to the exterior. It encases a sculptural concrete form with a rounded, sloping roof and is designed to exaggerate the traditional features of local cottages, architecture studio State of Kind told Dezeen. Find out more about Proclamation House ›
Tumblr media
Photo by Derek SwalwellHelvetia, Melbourne, by Austin Maynard Architects One of the most unusual designs on the list, this Melbourne home has a fish-pond atrium in its entrance space and also features five distinct garden areas. At its rear, the building has a garage that Australian firm Austin Maynard Architects topped with an "urban farm". This is enclosed with a barrel-vaulted wire mesh to keep out possums. Find out more about Helvetia ›

Photo by Felix ForestMatopos, Sydney, by Atelier Andy Carson Local studio Atelier Andy Carson married a curved bronze facade with a sandstone podium at this home for a gallerist in the Sydney suburb of Freshwater. Called Matopos, the house has an undulating sculptural shape and large windows designed to frame views of the nearby sea. Find out more about Matopos › Read the full article

Quality Building Services Builds the Outdoor Decks Canberra Families Dine on Drink Their Morning Coffee On and Play On
Tumblr media
Quality Building Services builds the outdoor decks Canberra families dine on, party on, drink their morning coffee on and play on. These are spaces that are used a lot and need to be able to withstand heavy traffic.
Hardwoods such as merbau, spotted gum and ironbark are popular choices in Canberra. Composite timbers are also available and look a lot like natural wood.
Eco-friendly
Timber decks are a great way to enhance your outdoor space. They add value to your home and can also increase its resale value. In addition, they can provide a comfortable place to relax or entertain guests. However, if you are thinking about installing a timber deck, it’s important to keep in mind the environmental impact of your choice of materials.
There are many options when it comes to timber decking. Blackbutt, jarrah, and tallowwood are popular choices in Australia. Jarrah is a hard Australian timber that has good resistance to insects and premature rot. Its colour ranges from warm dark browns to rich reds with wavy lines of interlocking grain.
If you are considering a timber deck, choose one that is sustainably harvested or locally grown. This will reduce your reliance on foreign imports. In addition, make sure your contractor is using a local supplier. It’s important to support local businesses and reduce the amount of waste that is sent overseas.
Durable
Timber is a tough, durable material that can stand up to foot traffic and harsh weather conditions. It also requires minimal maintenance and can be stained in a variety of colours to suit any style. Composite timber, on the other hand, is an eco-friendly alternative that can be painted or left natural and does not require staining or oiling.
Jarrah is a beautiful native hardwood that lasts a long time when treated correctly. Its class 2 fire resistance rating makes it an excellent choice for bushfire prone areas. ACT Decks can provide a variety of natural and composite timber decks for Canberra homes.
Yellow stringybark is a popular decking timber, but it can be unattractive in some applications due to its worm holes and gum veins. Other options include spotted gum, blackbutt, and ironbark. It is important to choose a reliable timber supplier that adheres to sustainable forestry practices. Check if the company is AFS Chain of Custody certified to guarantee that its timber comes from legal and sustainable forestry.
Versatile
There are a number of different timber species available as decking materials. Clear pine is a common choice that is both strong and durable, especially when sealed and treated. Other options include spotted gum, jarrah, and ironwood. Jarrah is a premium Australian hardwood with a rich colour palette and tight interlocking grain. Its durability and natural resistance to termites make it a good choice for outdoor decking, especially in humid regions.
Jarrah also has an eye-catching look that can complement any style of home. The price of jarrah can vary depending on the size and configuration of the deck, as well as its treatment.
Other popular timber decking choices include merbau, spotted gum, blackbutt, and stringybark. These species are tolerant to Australian weather conditions and can be stained or painted to suit any design. For a truly eco-friendly option, you can choose to use composite timber, which is made from recycled wood fibre and plastic. This material is also durable and resistant to the elements, and it’s free from splinters.
Affordable
When it comes to decking, timber is a popular choice due to its natural beauty and durability (if maintained regularly). It can be stained in many different colours to suit your taste. It’s also affordable and can be used for pergolas and retaining walls. It is treated with environmentally friendly chemicals, which makes it safe for the environment and your family.
When choosing your decking materials, make sure to consider the pros and cons of each one. For example, Jarrah is a popular native Australian timber that has a classy look and superior water resistance. However, it is important to find a supplier that harvests its timber responsibly. Look for suppliers that follow the policies and guidelines of the Government of Western Australia’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
Another option is composite timber, which is made from recycled wood fibres and plastic from common items like milk bottles. It looks and feels like real timber and is strong, lightweight and finished (it requires no sanding, staining or oiling). ACT Decks provides composite decking from leading brands such as TimberTech and Millboard.

Wood or laminate flooring: which is better?
The crucial query arises now. The question is, "Which is better: timber flooring or laminate flooring?"
Have you had enough of attempting to revive a carpet that has outlived its usefulness? If your carpets are worn out and in need of replacement, you should look into getting hardwood or laminate flooring instead. It is conditional upon the desired result. The combination of wood and laminate flooring creates an ultra-modern aesthetic.
Tumblr media
The proper flooring option may be found by answering the following questions.
How busy is this intersection usually?
Where in your house do you plan to install the new flooring?
Have you got kids and animals?
How about the colours?
Do you need to match any colours?
What kind of flooring do you currently have in your home?
Your budget is ______.
Is it something you can perform on your own, or will you require some assistance?
Hardwood or laminate flooring may be a dramatic way to update the aesthetic of your home.   Let's compare the benefits of wood and laminate flooring so you can make an informed decision.
Hardwood Floors
Blackbutt, blue gum, brush box, cypress pine, ironbark, kempas, jarrah, Merbau, spotted gum, tallowwood, tassie oak, walnut, and many more are currently among the woods available for use in flooring.
The likelihood of discovering timber flooring beneath the carpeting while remodelling an older home is considerable. With little effort (renting a Belt Sander, making ensuring the nails are flat, and applying a 2-pac polyurethane finish), these floors may be revitalised.
The quality of wood varies widely. The aesthetic value of each piece of wood is considered while classifying it at the plant. Since wood is a natural material, its appearance and feel may vary.
Timber flooring is more difficult to install than laminate flooring, therefore most people opt to have a professional do the work for them.
Timber flooring is noticeably more costly than other options like carpeting and laminate. This is something you need to view as an investment for the future. Timber flooring is a long-term investment, so it's smart to spread the payment out over 30 years to make it more manageable. Two or three sets of carpets would have to be changed in that period.
When your wooden floor begins to show signs of wear, you can restore its pristine appearance by sanding it and applying a new coat of lacquer.
Timber floors should be installed in dry areas, and it's best practice to let them acclimatise to the humidity of the space for at least a few days before finishing the installation.
Engineered wood flooring, or laminate flooring, is another name for this product.
Most Laminate flooring systems employ a click-together technique that makes them simple to install, making them a good choice if you plan to perform the job yourself.
Laminate flooring is less expensive, but it needs timber flooring to be quiet.
Because it is made of composite timber material that has been laminated together, laminated flooring has a hard-wearing top coat that is not as susceptible to dents as Timber - Solid. In other words, go ahead and rock those stilettos, ladies.
Cleaning is as simple as spraying and dry mopping, just like a vinyl floor. Water is the enemy of hardwood floors and should be avoided at all costs.
Similar to hardwood flooring, there is now a plethora of options to choose from. There is now a wide selection of plank lengths and timber finishes, including numerous rare and unusual types of wood.
Engineered timber flooring, a type of laminated flooring, is fabricated by laminating sections of timber together, much like a plywood, and then covering the entire thing with a wood veneer. Distressed, rustic, and hard-scraped finishes are just some of the options for the tops.
Timber floors or laminated floors, whichever you choose, will make your house feel brand new.
