Digimon Tamers - Episode 34

What the fuuuuuuck? Whelp, I got the darkness I've been waiting for and I didn't really care for it to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited for this show to get edgy, but this episode just felt jarring and the animation was kinda questionable.

Btw you've all been very courteous in the replies not spoiling anything, so thank you for that. Please continue to not spoil things haha :) I feel a little bad sharing this photoset because even the episode's title is spoilerific, but I'll make sure to tag it properly so at least the people that blacklist spoilers don't see it. (Then again, maybe I'm the only one in 2023 who still hasn't seen this show lol).

Notes:

Because I made the mistake of googling Culumon's gender a few episodes back, I did get spoiled that they're not really a digimon. Still, this raises many questions. What are they? Where did they get the name Culumon? What was their original form and how did they get their current form? etc. etc. I guess them not being a digimon lines up with them being partner-less and having a weird digivolution enhancing power.

This episode felt weird because it was basically (other than a brief, relaxed bit) one loooong battle scene filled with misery and rage. It sort of felt like one of those really abrupt surprise horror things like Doki Doki Literature Club because the tone shift was so jarring. Normally I like that sort of thing, but I don't know that it was executed well here.

I think the main flaw that this episode had for me is that the focus was on Leomon dying and Juri breaking down over his death. I do not care enough about those characters for that to have an impact on me. I don't feel like there was enough time spent developing their tamer-partner relationship. Even in this very episode when Leomon is questioned as to why he became Juri's tamer he's just like "fate I guess" which is a pretty lukewarm response. Also, Leomon dying is like a meme in Digimon lore, so that was another blow against this moment.

It felt a little off to me that Kyubimon got so beaten up but Ruki just panicked on the sidelines instead of running to comfort her. I get that that was probably a self-preservation response, but it seemed a little cold.

First Juri's digivice (arc, whatever) blue screens and then Takato's shatters!? Now that's intriguing...

I was hype to get a new "bad" digivolution since that hasn't happened since SkullGreymon (unless you count abominations like Chimeramon). It was a little upsetting to see Takato flip out. I wonder if his mixed emotions about Guilmon "just being data" played into his accidental abuse. The evil digivolution is cool looking but maybe has too many colors going on

Daaaaamn, poor Shiuchon just GOT here and now she's going through all this trauma. Not fair...

That was quite the cliffhanger ending, I feel like the follow-up to the chaos will be more interesting than the chaos itself...

Reverse unpopular opinion meme: Speak positively about an aspect of Tamers unrelated to the main yuri plot or to any character who primarily exists in relation to it.

The execution was hella fumbled in a lot of ways, but I like the core idea of the D-Reaper as this random-ass kid fused with an eldritch being taking out her hatred of humanity on everything in sight. (Appmon's main antagonist, Leviathan, iterates on the core concepts at play here in a really satisfying way.)

While I fully maintain that Ruki should have been the main character instead of Takato, I do like how his general "why we fight :(" attitude is a conscious active choice and he's fully capable and willing to be an unstoppable avatar of death if/when he lets his instincts take over.

What us your take on Juri? Cannot find post that summarizes it

Juri is a kid with a lot of unresolved feelings.

First, her mom died causing her to lose her emotional anchor. The lack of emotional support from her dad didn't help either.

He probably realized this and used it as a reason to remarry so she could have a mom who can take of her better than he could. But from Juri's perspective and also due to his lacking communication skill, she's seeing it as he dad replacing her mom.

I meme a lot that Juri dislikes her stepmom, but they're definitely not close to each other in canon. Can't say much about her half-brother since he doesn't appear much, and I can't find the clips with him either. But at least from memory I can tell he's comfortable enough with her so she probably treats him well.

Juri's family life is a stark contrast to pretty much everyone else's in the series. Even Ruki and Ryo whose mom and dad respectively have to raise them as single parents have healthier and functional family relationships.

Living in a emotionally absent home, it's no surprise Juri is drawn to Takato who wears his emotion on his sleeves. It's also worth noting that being an only child he's likely spoiled a lot too, a luxury she doesn't have. Amongst all the parents in the series, his parents are the most supportive that even confides in them before leaving to the Digital World. None of the other Tamers kids does this at this point in the series, or at least not to this degree of trust.

Juri loves her dad, there's no doubt about that. Otherwise she wouldn't imprint her desire for a strong knight in shining armor in the form of her Leomon-sama who can sweep her off her feet and pull her into his arms. Girl just wants a hug, you know. From a shirtless big buff furry guy, yeah, but still.

Near the end of the anime, we can see her dad trying to save her from the D-Reaper so we know that he does love her too. The anime doesn't show it, but I'm positive they have a heart-to-heart talk after the end of the story.

Wanna know about Hinanami, Hinazumi & HiNatsumi Fankids... How many are there?

I'll preface these by saying that I'm not going to number how many kids each girl has with Hajime. :P It's not out of laziness - honestly, I just like how Vergil does it in leaving the "numbers" up to the imagination. Plus, people have their own ideas about how many kids Makoto or Hajime would or should have, so in a way, this method can make quite a few people happy.

... Well, unless you think (ex., Hinanami) should have just one kid, and I give them multiple kids... Then you're outta luck. But, I'll try to think these through.

I'mma weak man. These kids will be heavily based off characters from other series - gives me the chance to "show them off" since I don't have sprites. I'll rattle off two of Hinanami's kids. Again, there could be more, but I'll leave that up to the imagination for now.

I went with Mari for this first one. Mari Hinata~... Mari means "truth; reason". I'm sure you all know about the "That's Wrong!" memes from Goodbye Despair, and truth/reason is pretty important for Hajime and Chiaki both. :3 Her hair color probably takes after her mom's, but Mari grows her hair out more like this. She's got her dad's face and/or his eyes. Her smiles are some combination of her parents' smiles. Mari's a bright, mature young girl that studies and practices hard, but also likes having fun with her friends and especially her little brother. ... Oh, she loves little brother. Very, very much. (❋•‿•❋) Mari enjoys hosting picnics with her brother and friends, and while she's open to taking part in video game multiplayer tournaments whenever their friends get into it, she's not an avid gamer like her mother. Aside from the occasional pranks, she normally has more mature tastes and hobbies. I guess you could say she inherited Hajime's determination and tenacity, but Chiaki's... concept of "natural talent". As such, she's a bit of a perfectionist. Hajime and Chiaki don't hold her to standards like that, they'd rather Mari just be happy - but Mari really wants to make her family proud, bring home only the very best grades, be the best in sports, play perfectly in music, bake the very best cookies, etc... Usually she can keep a lid on her emotions and not go too crazy with her perfectionism, but Mari is pretty passionate about it. After all, she's not making the effort for herself, she's doing it for her loved ones, to give them the best experience in everything~ She's a hard little worker, yes she is~ (❋•‿•❋)

This next one (Sunny, in Omori canon) is Mari's little brother. Nikko, which means "sunshine." His hair color is more like his dad's, and he's got softer facial features like his mother, and perhaps her eyes, too. Nikko definitely inherited the more reserved parts of Hajime and Chiaki's personalities - he doesn't have much energy, gets tuckered out easily, but he's got a vivid imagination. He loves to draw, read manga, play video games, and hang out with his friends and especially his big sister. Unfortunately, he inherited a lot of Hajime's self-esteem issues. Basically, he struggles with a lot of things and has a tendency to give up if he becomes too dissatisfied; also, he compares himself with others too much, and has a habit of putting Mari up on this pedestal that he'll never reach. As they get older and Mari starts prepping for college in high school, Nikko really starts missing her company, and that's why he takes up the violin... so that he can hopefully spend time with her in duet practice, but Mari being who she is and holding him to the same grueling standards as her... the practice does put a strain on their relationship.

Hinazumi probably has at least a couple kids like Hinanami, but for right now I'll name just the one. :P

This boy's name is Takato (Omori canon name: Hero). Mahiru and Hajime went for that name because the Kanji used means "treasure" or "precious thing." Takato definitely takes after his dad in his hair, his face, and his height. Though he does have his mom's eyes. Kinda like Mari, Takato is a mature kid that excels because he works and practices hard. Because some of his friends and half-siblings are reckless, he's developed a knack for First-Aid and taking care of others... though his main passion resides in cooking. Together, he and Mari are kinda like the stand-in parents for the siblings and half-siblings whenever the adults aren't around. There's been lots of good times, but there's also been a fair amount of fights and coverups (like when something gets broken in the house). Takato is often the mediator (or tries to be) while Mari is the "inspiration", or the leader that brings everyone together.

Similar to Hinazumi above, I'm gonna just list the one kid for now. There are probably a couple kids for Hinazuryu, though.

This girl's name is Izumi (Omori canon name: Aubrey), which means "spring" or "fountain." Natsumi felt like going for that name out of sentimentality for the place she, Hajime, and Chiaki used to meet up to play video games at Hope's Peak. Izumi's hair color is more like her dad's, grows it out longer than Natsumi's, but she takes after her mom a lot more in face, eyes, and attitude. Izumi's not a yakuza or anything, but she is a tough girl that doesn't take crap from others~ But she also has a vulnerable side, and confides in Nikko a lot while sitting on swings. Izumi's favorite possession is her baseball bat, which she uses for more than just softball; though she also has a fondness for stuffed animals and... bunnies. ... Yes, she has a pet bunny named "Bun-Bun." Don't you judge her! (❋•‿•❋) Izumi's protective of her family and friends, though she does take it personally if you hurt her, emotionally or otherwise. She's not the sharpest tool in the shed on the academic side of things, but that's okay. To her, there's more important stuff than school stuff - although she does idolize Mari a lot because of how smart and kind she is. (❋•‿•❋)
