My first real gig in August 1990 at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA., the one and only performance by Sasqautch. At this point, The Middle East was one room on the ground floor in the back of the restaurant. Promoter and local Boston legend Billy Ruane put us on an excellent bill!

Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Moving (2023, South Korea)
Directors: Park In Je & Park Younseo
Writer: Kang Full
Mini-review:
I enjoyed this so much. I must admit I struggled a bit with the first few episodes, but once the show gets its setup process out of the way, it becomes a very engrossing drama. It's both a superhero story with a big heart and a espionage thriller, and I just love how Moving manages to mix those two genres. The whole cast is great, both the veteran actors and the newcomers, and the production values are fantastic (although the CGI has some iffy moments here and there). The ending felt a bit rushed, but it was also very satisfying. There are also a few scenes that point to a possible second season or spin-off, and I really hope we get some sort of follow-up. After spending seven weeks with these characters, I know I'm gonna miss them.

Year of Lists
September Films
She a really long one
Gravity (2013) *6 - took me long enough to get to this. Would have been better in the cinema.
She Said (2022) *6.5 - I love a true story journalistic pacy movie - and Carey Mulligan. Thought Keira Knightley was in this, she's not.
Wonderland / 원더랜드 (2024) *6 - plane watch. This was cute, and emotional.
Okja (2017) *7.3 - I LOVE STEVEN YEUN and a lot of other things about this movie that I will not elaborate on.
The Wailing / 곡성 (2016) *8.5 - I wish I had the words right now, but I don't. This movie is superb, nothing like anything I've seen before. Korean cinema continues to amaze and delight.
Quiz Lady (2023) *6 - new comfort movie alert. This was fun!
The Client (1994) *5 - I don't remember too much of this, just that I thought I'd like it more than I did, and that Susan Sarandon is a delight, as always.
True Romance (1993) *7 - some of it is uncomfortable but yeah, I get it, I get why people are obsessed.
Blink Twice (2024) *7 - this was loud, fun, cool, distressing; just not life-changing.
Cocaine Bear (2023) *7 - SO MUCH FUN, great stuff, absurd.
His House (2020) *5 - I didn't really like this, I didn't think it worked, had a bit of promise with the concept.
Spinnin Man (2018) *5 - what? Like a dream, any memory of this is gone. Could watch again; it's not great, whatever really.
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) *7.9 - (rewatch) what to say, it's great.

The Crimson illness is a consequence of the "POWER OF GOD"
Thanks to @thoughtfulstudentsalad post...there came a little idea to me...
I make the following claims:
1.All the descendants that have died due to the Crimson Illness possess a special ability...a magic like power that stemmed from King Hiryuu´s godhood.
2.And so the Dragon Gods called only half of them to heaven...as not everybody of the descendants possessed that special power.
3. Even King Hiryuu died due to his body not being able to withstand this power
4. The flaws in logic in the narrative are no flaws, but can be explained by this theory.
5. The Dragon Gods manipulated everybody in order for Yona to come back to heaven...I mean literally everybody...
Let´s begin.
1.King Hiryuu and some of his descendants possess the POWER OF GODS
The power of King Hiryuu is even mentioned at the beginning of the manga...when Iksuu tells Yona a story...
THE POWER OF AUTHORITY
The features of that POWER OF AUTHORITY
The POWER OF AUTHORITY influences the feelings and the impression of the person that has the bad luck to be within a certain distance of said godly descendant or reincarnation. They want to follow them...
The POWER fucks with their feelings and minds...it rewires them...
Tumblr media
Of course Yona possesses the greatest POWER OF AUTHORITY.
Literally...That is the reason, why people lose their fucking brains, when Yona is in action...because she rewires their brains...
And they want to follow her, they love her...even Soo Won´s brain is rewired...he loves Yona´s red hair...after all...Even though he hates King Hiryuu...
Yona beats Soo Won regarding that power, she is the reincarnation after all...but let´s say...but to that I come later...
People are drawn to her so easily, if she wishes it...that seems to be the crux...
Tumblr media
The power only seems to kick in, if the descendant/reincarnation absolutely wishes for it.
The person has eye contact with the reincarnation/descendant...There is a reason, why Soo Won´s and Yona´s eyes are mentioned so often.....
The POWER OF AUTHORITY is not infallible: I come later to that.
The POWER OF AUTHORITY draws out the leadership of strong people who have the ability to lead as well...
I just say...Tae Jun (Yona) and Lily (Soo Won)
The power most likely has no good influence on people with a weak mind...KIng Hiryuu was captured after all...
Proof that it really is a magic ability
Yona mentions herself later that her blood was burning...Where do we have a bond or power based on blood? The bond of the dragon warriors...It is Yona using magic...on Tae Jun...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soo Won is the SUPER-DESCENDANT of HIryuu
I think with the meeting of his parents we can savely assume:
Soo Won´s birth was fated.
If the Dragon Gods really did not intend for him to be born, he simply wouldn´t have.
But Soo Won was necessary for their scheme.
With only half the descendants dying I can assume, that not every descendant had the power of authority...but Yon hi had it...just like her father... and the magic worked on Yu hon...who did not believe in the power of the gods...The power of authority is a charme as well, after all...Maybe there was even a reason, why they met, when Yon hi was attacked...maybe she wished to be rescued...
Yon hi barely used her power, but she still died pretty soon...so it is likely that she harbored a very strong power herself, but was too afraid to really use it.
Of couse she would protect Yona, the queen bee with the strongest power from her son...but let´´s look at Soo Won...
Hak correctly recorgnized that Soo Won was literally born to lead...
Hak realized that power of authority...and was infatuated with Soo Won...
Tumblr media
"He has some kind of power that reels people in"...
Just to be clear...I will later explain, why I assume this:
The POWER OF AUTHORITY cannot really create love...that means Hak loves Yona really as he does like Soo Won. Strong feelings beat the POWER OF AUTHORITY.
Soo Won was used as pawn of the gods
Not just Soo Won, basically all people are used for that purpose. KIng Il was told from the day, basically that boy was born that he would kill him one day...that absolutely destroyed every possibility for Soo Won´s power to have an effect on KIng Il....
King Il strong feelings of fear nullified Soo Won´s power...Maybe there was a reason King Il feared speaking with Soo Won...if Soo Won really possesses this power, King Il was maybe afraid that he had an effect on him?
There is another example of strong feelings nullifying the POWER OF the GODS: Zeno
Zeno was able to even attack Hak and Yona and having a plan that went against the wishes of the Dragon Gods...Because his desperation was already big enough...
Hak basically also wanted to kill Soo Won...
I guess that King Il knew of the POWER OF AUTHORITY...and maybe he also knew that Soo Won possessed it as well...
King Il reeled Soo Won´s feelings up on the day he was murdered. Most likely he wanted to die a martyr for the cause...since Soo Won´s determination and hate was necessary to have a stronger POWER OF AUTHORITY than Yona...at least for a certain time. And to induce the POWER OF AUTHORITY in Yona and to make her desperate enough to let it grow and grow.
By the way, I show you the moment Soo Won´s power kicked in...maybe not for the first time...but it skyrocked ...on the night after his father was murdered.
Tumblr media
Do you see it...how Soo Won moves the flammes...His feelings and determination are great enough...to use the power in his blood. To make his blood boil...Just like Yona´s.
I do make the claim that it was necessary for Soo Won to have a "POWER OF AUTHORITY" stronger than Yona for a certain time..
because he drove her out and made her assume her own power...without Soo Won this would have not happened. And he had to go against her wishes and will to do so.
His determination was strong enough...due to his own pain...Strong feelings break the POWER OF AUTHORITY after all...even in Yona´s case.
So Soo Won pushed forward and rescued with HHB´s help the country...and he was using and using his ability...
Soo Won has an influence on the Dragon Warriors
There are certain factors that make me believe that Soo Won is basically the descendant with the strongest POWER OF AUTHORITY currently alive...
Soo Won resembles King Hiryuu like no other person besides Yona herself...from his love to people, his determination...
His determination is big enough to use his full potential: Soo Won´s trauma made him basically cut out everything that could distract his attention from his big task.
His birth cannot be an accident, his father was a charismatic as well and his mother a descendant...
Soo Won is the only descendant that has a similar effect on the dragon warriors than Yona...
It is not the same...however
a) When Hak wants to attack Soo Won, Jae ha protects Soo Won ...more for Hak´s sake...but still...
b) Kija wanted to take revenge, but is unable to even lift a finger...against Soo Won
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"And yet why can´t I move"
And there is proof that it was the power that prevented this...
Tumblr media
Here Kija´s heart is accelerating, when Soo Won touches him...
And Shin ha´s reaction is also interesting...you know the one, who Soo Won claimed to have hated him...
Tumblr media
"I didn´t get a bad feeling. He gives off an air that is quiet and strong. And he has eyes from which you cannot look away."
Tumblr media
Shin ha does not appear to hate Soo Won so greatly as Soo Won thought he did...But what did happen then? Why did Shin ha attack Soo Won?
This explanation is given in the latest chapter...
Tumblr media
"I never thought that I wanted to die"
Soo Won wanted to die at that moment due to his immense guilt...It is interesting, but Soo Won mentioned giving his life a couple of times...even at the beginning, after he killed King Il he talks about "giving his life for his father´s sake"...in Awa he is "ready to give Yona his life"...And in the last chapter he tells us, that helping Hak is his last task as a king.
I guess the guilt made him at times suicidal...there is the small possibility that Soo Won can actually command the dragon warriors in certain times...Soo Won himself commanded Shin ha to kill him, but he couldn´t - Soo Won was still protected. Soo Won did not need much power, Shin ha´s feelings were already at a disarray but ..Soo Won felt relieved, when he was attacked. His wish to die at that moment was huge.
Shin ha can instill fear and terror in others, but cannot make others wish to commit suicide...so it was Soo Won´s own wish.
Yona and Hak did not absolve him of his life after all...
Tumblr media
So it does appear...that Soo Won has a little influence on the dragon warriors...His power seems to be so strong at least...that Zeno asked him the question, when they met for the second time..
Tumblr media
"Do you desire the four dragon warriors?"
As far as I remember, Soo Won is the only descendant Zeno has ever asked the question...if Soo Won had no influence on the dragon warriors, the question would be pointless.
After Xing Yona´s POWER OF AUTHORITY surpassed Soo Won´s even with his iron will
The chapter 141 is called "influence" for a reason...
In Xing it is apparent...that Yona is using her "POWER OF AUTHORITY" on Soo Won...
Tumblr media
But why can´t I move?
Similiarily to Kija, Soo Won is frozen...Both Yona and him have eye contact...
Suddenly...Soo Won remembers King Il that told him of Yona being the reincarnation...
Soo Won refused to acknowledge the gods..but he feels the POWER OF AUTHORITY on his own skin...
I really want to know...how big Yona´s massive power is...Lily came to "rescue her"...but was this really an accident or did Yona "call her"?
Soo Won with all his determination has failed here...
Maybe that Yona is able to find the correct words in those situations is also due to that power, she possesses.
It is not just simple magic, but it also seems to create ideal situations for reaching that goal..This power fucks with the brain and feelings ot the people, but not to a degree that is completely ridiculous...people that hate Yona, won´t suddenly love her...
But she might find the correct words to persuade people, where there is a chance...or having a high intelligence as it is necessary for a leader...
However Yona´s power isn´t infallible either...as it is the case with the dragon warriors...people are creedy and people desire the power of gods...
sometimes she does not have that iron will to assume the POWER OF AUTHORITY...even though right now, she is pretty fired up and determined..the reason, why her power seems to be at a maximum.
I even wonder if the idea with the lightning of the beacon...if Yona had a hunch that something like this would really happen...as she seemed to have some kind of foresight as well...
3. Even King Hiryuu died due to his body not being able to withstand this power
King Hiryuu seemed to have become a human being as a grown men...because at the beginning...he tells the dragon warriors...that he "is already human"...As if he was not too long ago still a dragon god.
Tumblr media
King Hiryuu used the The POWER OF AUTHORITY...he must have used it for years...even with the protection of the dragon gods...
Tumblr media
At least King Hiryuu contracted the Crimson Illness..."his body was getting worn out"...but it isn´t due to age...that is bullshit. King Hiryuu is at most 40 years in this picture...
It was most likely his never-ending use of the POWER OF AUTHORITY that has worn him out...because Hiryuu had to battle much during his life...
And maybe it was even him being tired of battling...his determination might have broken down at last...
Maybe @thoughtfulstudentsalad is right...maybe it was not just the power alone that Soo Won used...but his horrible state of his mind...King Hiryuu let him doubt and his determination was weakened...
And Soo Won grew sicker and sicker...but i guess...using a gods power in a human body, might also add to that burden...
5. The Dragon Gods manipulated everybody in order for Yona to come back to heaven...I mean literally everybody...
I mean literally anybody...
Yu hon was shown a charismatic wife that would lead to have him a son with the powers of a god.
Even the priests that were slaughtered and that instilled a hate in King Il and Kashi...making them their nice little pawns to sacrifice in order to instill the POWER OF AUTHORITY in Yona..
King Il was made scared madly of Yu hon and Soo Won and that lead to him committing the murder...that really fired Soo Won up to assume his own POWER OF AUTHORITY..and Soo Won was the one who drove Yona to develop hers...that helped her to see...and now Yona possesses the strongest POWER OF AUTHORITY...
And at the end..Soo Won makes Yona queen and she will use her POWER of AUTHORITY and contract the Crismon Illness as well over time...
But that would most likely not lead to Yona coming back to heaven...
Therefore they used the dragon warriors and especially Zeno...2000 years are enough for Zeno nearly becoming mad...his desperation broke the bond partly...so that he could drive home the message to Yona to help him...and return to heaven...Especially since the other dragon warriors are taken hostage as well...
King HIryuu loved the dragon warriors and human beings after all...
Mos likely Yona fell into a trap.

BL Coming in March 2023
The month of Thailand busting up established pairs, apparently.
03/01
The Promise, (Thai WeTV) 10 eps - friends-to-lovers, follow up to a previously aired miniseries Phupha | Nanfah. Because of this and the WeTV platform I likely won’t bother.
03/02
All the Liquors prev. Liquor (Korea Gaga & Viki) 8 eps - Liquor company rep and party boy Han Ji Yu buts heads (and other stuff? eh, it’s Korea, probably not) with hot chef Park Ki Hoon, who doesn't drink.
Heesu In Class 2 (Korea unknown prob Viki and/or Gaga) - A gay(er) version of Sex Education? Based on a webtoon. Heesu’s world revolves around Chanyoung, his best friend and secret crush. He doesn’t mind cheering Chanyoung from the sidelines or listening to all his girl problems. He doesn’t care if people only know him as “Chanyoung’s friend.” Then one day, Heesu starts hearing his name everywhere. On the bus, in the halls, during lunch… Turns out, there’s a rumor going around school (Got a love problem? Find Heesu in Class 2 and he’ll tell you what to do!) and with that, Heesu suddenly finds himself the center of attention. But how could he give anyone advice? He doesn’t even know what to do about his own crush!
I want this one to happen SO Bad but am very nervous about all the delays and connected sandals and lack of distribution so late in the game. It started filming in December and seems more of an ensemble cast with lots of mixed in het romance. So... ???
03/03
A Boss and a Babe (Thai YouTube) 12 eps - ForceBook in an office boss/employee. Chay is a sunshine gamer who wants to get big in the e-sports industry. However, his plans are dramatically altered when is made to intern at a company. There his boss Gun has him do some pretty weird errands, confusing Chay about his true intentions. What do Gun’s actions mean? And will Chay return back to his gaming life?
I’m optimistic, I want ForceBook to get another chance and I like a cheesy office romance.
03/04 (maybe March 9 international)
Love Syndrome (Thai unknown prob iQIYI or Gaga) 10 eps - trailer, based on a Y-novel, has side characters from Unforgotten Night but no crossover actors or other apparent connections. Day & It have been together for 2 years (looks like a violent off again on again thing). An accident leaves Day seriously injured and It blames himself then Day wakes up with amnesia. (Stars Frank formerly of FrankDrake.)
03/08
Pastsenger AKA Past-senger (Thai Gaga) 12 eps- Stars Marc (My Gear & Your Gown) and Cooper (My Engineer) who were both formerly paired with others, in a time travel paranormal that smacks of HIStory 5. Sunshine 90s kid travels to 2022, goes to university, encounters grumpy nerd.
03/09
Our Dating Sim (Korea unknown prob Viki) - What happens when two men, friends since schoo, meet again at work to create a dating simulation game together.
03/12 (maybe March 19 international)
Future the series (Thai YouTube & Gaga?) 5 eps - Based on a y-novel by Faddest (En of Love - yeah I didn’t know that was based on a novel, either). About, you guessed it, an engineering student and a dentist. Maybe this will be the FOTS we were all hoping for? Fuse (the engineering student) is played by Boom from the En of Love and is kinda the same character (Field). I think we can expect this one to be soft, it’s from the 21 Day Theory people.
03/14
A Shoulder to Cry On (Korea Viki & Gaga) 7 eps - Adaptation of Dongmul's manwha this is high school set and appears to feature a teasing confident gay and a rich/poor pairing, with themes of hurt/comfort and homophobia/gossip. One boy starts a dating rumor with another, putting the later’s archery scholarship in jeopardy. Stars idols Jaehan & Yechan BOTH from Kpop group OMEGA X.
THIS IS ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED BLS OF 2023!!! I still can’t quite believe it will actually happen.
03/17
Unintentional Love Story (Korea iQIYI) 6 eps? - Ceramic artist Yoon Tae Joon has withdrawn from society, but Ji Won Young (an employee at a large company) tracks him down. Ji Won Young is intent on winning over the heart of Yoon Tae Joon as he's the company chairman's favorite artist. Stars actor Cha Seo Wo and idol Gongchan (maknae of B1A4).
Individual Circumstances mark 2? No thank you. But if I must, I must.
03/22
Make a Wish (Thai Viu) - trailer, stars Fluke Natouch (OhmFluke UWMA etc...) & Judo (The Miracle Of Teddy Bear) in a light-hearted medical-fantasy romance with a comedic flair. About a doctor who sees ghosts and a deity who resides in a Bodhi tree that earns merits whenever he fulfills a wish. He is shocked to find the doctor can actually see him and decides to help him find the reason for his ghostly ability. Thus begins a chaotic yet romantic journey. From a y-novel by Sammon (Manner of Death, Triage).
I’ll watch it if I can get hold of it. We’ve seen Fluke iwth other pairing before, and I like Sammon’s stuff.

Thoughts from reading Yona of the Dawn Ch. 9
Tumblr media
Ch.9 in summary: Hak and Yona are confronted/attacked by Tae-Jun. In a test of her newfound principles and in desperation to save Hak, Yona chooses to reject helplessness and take more direct action, unlocking a fire inside of her.
Tumblr media
"How're we supposed to find someone if we don't know where he is?" – sorry, Hak, I'm afraid you'll be doing a lot of that in the near future XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Since ancient times, there have been priests in Kouka who gazed into the kingdom's future...if you're unsure of what you should, you should consult them, your highness." – the introduction of priests (or, I believe as the anime translated it, "oracles," which sounds a little more mystical to me) + the idea of a greater path for Yona. It almost sounds like Mundok has an inkling of what that path contains and like his person beliefs tie to the priests.
"They used to live in the temple in the royal palace. I hear they once were a powerful force in national politics. But when Lord Yu-Hon cracked down on them, they all left. Now, they live in remote areas in secret" – Yu-Hon being responsible for chasing the priests out and removing them from positions of influence feels like it factors into the mysterious history of Il/Yu-Hon/the succession.
"The right path, huh? Right now, I'm just struggling to survive" – Yona has grown a lot already, but she's still a wandering soul (literally and figuratively) just trying to live another day. She doesn't know what the future brings. But she will need to shift from "surviving" to "living." Right now it probably seems impossible, but she needs a purpose. I think she has begun to discover it in her growing care for others and the action she has taken to protect them.
Tumblr media
"...can anyone really live here?" "Well, you'd probably fall off a cliff, princess." – famous last words, Hak.
"No one could survive in these cold mountains..." "The land that the Fire Tribe controls is even more desolate." – a fun little link back to the opening flash-forward scene! ("Back then...I had no idea it could get so cold outside the palace walls") Yona is beginning/continuing to discover more about her kingdom's land and its people.
"I used to be the princess of this nation...but Hiryuu Palace was all I knew. 'I don't know.' How foolish I must have sounded." – Yona is ashamed of her lack of knowledge. She was ignorant about both her kingdom's people and the land itself. She never left the palace, being extremely sheltered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Sleeping outside? I've started getting used to it" – Already Yona has grown a little tougher and more resilient. She's adapting to her new life. With Soo-Won's betrayal and being on the run, reality hit extremely hard but the changes to her circumstances are changing her in turn and producing that growth.
"This isn't like the mountains behind the palace..." – in fact, Yona's growth was already happening when she was in her worst and weakest state. Hak saved her physical body and now the Wind Tribe has saved her spirit, infusing her with hope, courage, and determination.
"Then I'll sleep in your arms and stay warm" *cue flabbergasted Hak freakout* – This would be such a good line if it has been intentional XD But Yona thinks nothing of it.
She's kind of unaffected by the idea of being close to Hak–essentially, she's "Soo-Won-ing" him aka treating Hak how Soo-Won treated her/not fully viewing him as a "man" or considering him as a romantic prospect. She's not completely clueless because tell me she wouldn't have been affected by the idea of being in the same situation with Soo-Won when she blushed just from holding his hand and sleeping next to him. But also–girl. Hello. She's got some obliviousness and/or a Hak-shaped blindspot.
I think this is somewhat related to how firmly Hak is in her mind as "protector" and her trust in him. There's a little bit of "why would I be embarrassed? It's Hak."
But boooooy do I think that gets to Hak. When he recovers from his initial reaction, he is quick to shift into kind of sleazy-flirty-mode: "Sounds fine to me. But I might get up to something." – He is affected by Yona and how unaffected she seemed at the idea.
Yona's "Something?" does feel like an indication of at least some innocence and ignorance regarding adult relationships. Maybe it challenges the maturity she thought she displayed in how she regarded Soo-Won. Hak's first try at saying "hey, I am a guy. Don't forget" goes over her head, and if it's not just cluelessness, then Yona is in deep with her belief that Hak couldn't mean that so his "up to something" must be referring to something else. She genuinely doesn't realize he likes her.
I find Yona's obliviousness a fun contrast to the denial and suppression we see from a character like Maomao in The Apothecary Diaries. I would love to see Maomao smack some sense into Yona on this topic.
"...something like this" – and Hak resorts to physical demonstration to finally get the point across and I do think when it comes to the two of them, actions from Hak do have the ability to get Yona flustered, she's usually just not expecting them. Hak's got a slight element of unpredictability in this regard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The line between Hak getting his point across and genuinely protecting Yona is blurry hereI'm not sure where one ends and the other begins. Because Yona is made uncomfortable, Hak is lucky the moment blends into a cool "I can detect how many people are coming" scene or else I might be more frustrated with him.
(We call this whole ramble "trying to explain character behavior I don't love" and I do support flawed characters so...)
Yona's reaction shows how fear is still very real for her and paralyzes her a bit.
Tumblr media
Hak getting on my nerves a little, but I think he kind of has to have the last word on the matter and reverts to his usual strategy of making light of things/teasing. It's like his armor as he tries not to be hurt by his unrequited feelings.
I do like the "fwump," putting Yona's hood back up to hide her. Even when he's being an ass, Hak is in Yona protector mode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Big fan of protector stance Hak and the "slash" panel is gorgeoooous but it's interesting how deadly/violent Hak can be and how he seems to enjoy it. He is a trained general and guard, after all, but his grins really stand out.
Tumblr media
"'Hak fights like lightning! If we ever fought seriously, he'd beat me to a pulp.' Even at a moment like this...I still remember your face..." –Even after everything and under threat of danger, Soo-Won is in Yona's thoughts. For her, it's like an "everything reminds me of you" situation and also indicates how she valued his opinion.
At least Yona has some self-awareness about the dominance of Soo-Won in her mind.
And "if we ever fought seriously, he'd beat me to a pulp" – foreshadowing?
Tumblr media
I appreciate this moment of Hak being Hak (aka a little sarcastic, teasing shit who pretends to not take things seriously) and ignoring Tae-Jun because 1. lol Tae-Jun's reaction of "No, no, that's fine...WAIT." and 2. it emphasizes how Hak is that way with everyone, not just Yona. It lessens the string of some of his less-than-savory comments to her for me. Or at least re-contextualizes.
It's a good frame of reference for Hak's treatment of Yona (How does he treat her in these teasing moments in comparison to how he treats others– or what is the teasing about? Usually with Yona, his comments are like a deflection "I don't have feelings for you. Nope." + How does he treat her outside of those moments?)
Tumblr media
A small moment, but I like how he is sure to say "don't punish the Wind Tribe for my actions" + "hurting me won't impact the Wind Tribe"
Tumblr media
I like these panels and they show that yes, Hak can take things seriously, especially when he's in protector mode.
And I know it's heat of the moment, but this is kind of what I was referencing earlier regarding Yona being unaffected by being close to Hak and viewing physical proximity to him as something more practical than anything else.
Tumblr media
"I'm scared! Arrows and soldiers are coming at us from every side...even Hak...can't handle all this!"
– so I did a rambling analysis of the weight-related comments from Hak in my goodreads review but basically weight gain for Yona = recovery and an indicator of health so Hak would actually secretly be pleased about it, but there's still a negative connotation considering how he uses it to tease her and I think its inclusion is in poor taste.
But with that out of the way, it is worth noting how Hak (in typical fashion) seems to use his comment to try and make light of the situation/distract Yona as she experiences panic and fear.
Tumblr media
"Hak!! Hak?! Are you all right?!" "Stop fussing over me. It's creepy" "You're...you're bleeding" – Hak said "I'd take a bullet (arrow) for you"!!
I think this is a better use of the teasing/making light of the situation method by Hak. He's trying to play it off, but YONA CARES ABOUT HIM. You can clearly see the pain on his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"He got injured from protecting me...'If you're with me, I'll have to protect you.' I..." – Yona realizes the truth of Hak's words about having to protect her if they travel together and so soon into their travels.
Tae-Jun even said "I couldn't care less about the Wind Tribe. I'm going to kill you because I have business with the princess here!" to Hak. Before, Yona felt partially responsible for the suffering of the Wind Tribe and the injured merchants, but here the feeling of responsibility is even stronger and more direct. The guilt and sadness eats at her.
"I knew Hak would shield her with his body" – more of everyone knowing Hak's devotion to Yona and an example of how Hak is both a weapon and a shield for Yona ("a tool")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"They're going to kill Hak!"
"No, think about this. I should stay put...and hold my breath. If I go out there, I'll only be in his way. Just like earlier. It'll be all right. Hak is really strong."
"He could dodge that arrow. I'll stay right here and wait for him to come back. Hak...would never die." – Yona has had to face a lot that at one point seemed incomprehensible: her father's death, Soo-Won's betrayal... does the reliability and presence of Hak feel even more unshakable than her father and Soo-Won? And/or does she realize that nothing is written in stone?
"NO. Why did I leave Fuuga in the first place?" –in the last chapter, Yona became determined to take action and not accept that she should be passive and everything will be okay. But in Fuuga, taking action was more theoretical and relatively safe. The action of leaving to protect someone is much easier than being in the heat of battle.
Yona decided what she values/her principles, but this is her first big test in regards to them. Was she just all talk?
Tumblr media
A BIG MOMENT for Yona, a sort of culmination of the growth she has been experiencing so far. And it's beautiful.
"Why did I leave Fuuga in the first place? Was it to have Hak protect me while I hide? If so, I should have stayed where I was. I'm just a burden to him. What would I do if he weren't here? Do I plan to admit that I'm weak and keep cowering?"
This reminds me of how I love the questions Yona asks herself back in chapter 1 ("Am I not allowed to be happy?" + "I'm allowed to have these feelings, aren't I?") and her honesty with herself and others. Yona feels and admits that she's weak. She feels powerless and helpless and like a burden, but she doesn't want to hide or keep cowering. She wants to be someone worth protecting and be someone capable of protecting, for Hak and for herself. She rejects the position of damsel she's gotten used to and decides to change.
"Before I ask for any divine answers...there are some questions I need to ask myself" – and I love this part too. There's a re-centering and some introspection happening before she chooses the path forward. This goes back to her journey of self-discovery and who she wants to be, and I think it demonstrates Yona placing value in herself and her thoughts + opinions.
She won't be a doll to be manipulated or just do what others say. She will decide for herself and bring her own thoughts to the table.
I think it's cool that we get all of this here. Maybe survival would be more likely if she stayed hidden, but she's choosing to live, not just survive. It brings things back to her thoughts from the beginning of the chapter: "The right path, huh? Right now, I'm just struggling to survive." In choosing to emerge from hiding and act, she has some direction and purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOOK AT THOSE EYES. Yona is pissed and I live for it. There's a clear fire lit inside her.
"W–What's going on? I thought being driven from the palace had broken her spirit" – Yona shocks Tae-Jun (who isn't as dumb as he appears as he correctly assumed Yona's state post-Soo-Won betrayal but he didn't account for what her time with the Wind Tribe would do!)
"We must talk" – Yona is using what she has, her words, but this also works as a reflection of her father's nonviolence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You poor thing...! Soo-Won has treated you abominably. But if you come with me and tell the truth, we could drag him off the throne. You can avenge your father"
"If you new all that...why did the Fire Tribe put pressure on the Wind Tribe? Why did you attack those merchants? If you know the truth about what happened...you shouldn't have been trying to hurt the Wind Tribe...or trying to kill Hak for no reason! There are more important things you should've been doing!" – Yona sees through Tae-Jun and cracks down on how he + the Fire Tribe hurt innocents, she is continuing to dedicate herself to the people + be outraged on their behalf. And while before her emotions regarding what happened to the merchants and the Wind Tribe skewed more towards sadness, now she is fueled by anger.
Yona is also continuing with her refusal to be manipulated/do what others say and adding onto that, she's refusing to accept being talked down to.
"Her eyes look like they're on fire...I can't take my eyes off her!" – Yona is stepping into her power and others can see it!
Tumblr media
"I may be a naive princess...but I'm not foolish enough...to listen to anyone who acts so senselessly!" – jabbing at Tae-Jun's priorities while asserting her own. Yona is again demonstrating self-awareness and honesty ("naive princess") but still doing what she can and acting from the heart. She has a passion to her.
"Her highness is supposed to be young and malleable..." – Yona standing up to Tae-Jun is standing up against what Hak hates about the nobility: people being treated as pawns + dishonesty + selfishness. She will not be a tool (which makes me think of how Hak told her to use him as a tool. He does submit to her will but he isn't malleable and is unshakable in his devotion)
And even Hak is shook by Yona's actions and words here. This is a part of her maybe even he hasn't seen before.
"...her crimson tresses...looked like they were flames about to consume her" – it's almost like Yona's rage and thoughts are too powerful for her body. She has a powerful emotionality and she may continue to show that feelings are not weak but actually the opposite.
Yona's hidden power has been unlocked, but what exactly is it? Here it seems to be determination + emotionality + passion driven by care for others. It's kind of her "Wind Tribe moment" aka doing as they did, moving from inspiration to action.

The History of Korean Male Soloists from the 20th Century: Episode 3.5/?
This section explores the ongoing journey of Kim Saeng-ryeo, focusing on the orchestras he established and participated in throughout his career. In the first part, I discussed his life and professional achievements.
Kyungsung Welfare Chamber Orchestra
Gyeongseong, which can also be spelled as Kyungsung, refers to the same Welfare Chamber Orchestra.
The Kyungsung Welfare Chamber Orchestra (경성후생실내악단; 京城厚生室內樂團), originally established as the National Music Popularization Corps (국민총력조선연맹; 國民音樂普及挺身隊), aimed to disseminate quality music and its artistic values to the public. This pro-Japanese ensemble was created to support the welfare initiatives of the Government-General of Korea (朝鮮總督府), performing in diverse settings such as educational institutions and various production areas, including agriculture, industry, and fishing, to provide uplifting music to the community.
Tumblr media
Members of the Gyeongseong Chamber Orchestra in the 1930s.
This chamber orchestra, established in 1942, comprised musicians who had previously performed with the New Beijing Symphony Orchestra, which originated in Manchuria. At its inception, the orchestra was conducted by Kim Saeng-ryeo, with notable members including Kim Seong-tae, Kim Cheon-ae, Lee In-beom, Kim Tae-yeon (김태연), Lee Yu-seong (이유성), Lee In-hyeong, Park Pyeong-su (박평수), Lee Yong-cheol, Ahn Seong-gyo, and Lee Kang-ryeol (이강렬). Following its reorganization in 1944, Hyeon Je-myeong took on the role of chairman, while Kim Won-bok, Yun Ki-seon, Lee Heung-ryeol (이흥렬), Jeong Hee-seok (정희석), Lee Gyu-yong (이규영), Na Un-yeong (나운영), Jeong Yeong-jae (정영재), Kim Yeong-ae (김영애), and Lee Jong-tae (이종태) continued to contribute as active members.
He performed at the Music Patriotic Concert organized by the Joseon Music Association under the Japanese Government-General. In 1944, he travelled to Manchuria to help integrate the Welfare Chamber Orchestra into the New Symphony Orchestra. As a result, he was listed in the music section of the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Figures compiled by the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities in 2008.
In February 1943, the orchestra, backed by the National Mobilization Association of Korea, organized a national music concert at Bumin Hall (부민관). During its inaugural year, the orchestra conducted a total of 152 performances over eight months, which included 36 general concerts, 46 school concerts, 19 consolation concerts for industrial soldiers, 44 consolation concerts for the military, and 7 additional concerts. In acknowledgment of its contributions, the Gyeongseong Welfare Chamber Orchestra was awarded the 5th Joseon Arts Award (朝鮮藝術賞) by Shin Taiyosha (新太陽社) in Japan in May 1945.

Activities
The Kyungsung Welfare Chamber Orchestra has a rich history of performances, beginning with its inaugural concert on June 11, 1942, followed by a second concert on December 24 of the same year. The orchestra continued to showcase its talent with a third concert and a Japanese National Music Concert on February 24, 1943, and a solo performance by Kim Cheon-ae in April 1943. Notable events included a patriotic chamber symphony night dedicated to a battleship on June 29-30, 1943, and participation in the Song of the Peninsula Liberation Day Concert on August 3, 1943. The ensemble also organized an open-air music and film night to commemorate the conscription system on the same day. In 1944, the orchestra toured mines and factories in North Hamgyong Province at the invitation of Cheongjin University, followed by concerts aimed at uplifting fishing villages and mining communities in Gangwon-do from August 12 to August 19. The Jeollabuk-do Industrial War Memorial Concert took place from August 22 to August 29, 1944, and the orchestra held its 11th concert from October 2 to 4, 1944. The year concluded with a Grand Concert from January 20 to 22, 1945, and a Hope Concert from March 23 to 25, 1945. The orchestra was honoured with the Joseon Art Award on May 8, 1945, and performed in China from May 5 to May 7, 1945, culminating in an evening of literature and music on August 1, 1945.
The National Music Popularization Corps/ Total Mobilization Federation
A pro-Japanese organization identified "When We Go to the Sea," "Battleship March," "The Power of Asia," and "National March Song" as key selections for the National Song Collection, promoting their performance across various regions. They established a singing guidance team known as the National Song Singing Movement Volunteer Corps, which was mandated to tour and perform these songs. The National Mobilization League, influenced by Western-oriented figures such as Hyun Je-myeong, Kim Seong-tae, Go Jong-ik (고종익), and Lee Heung-ryeol, played a significant role in advancing the Japanese name change policy implemented by the Government-General of Korea. This pro-Japanese entity was ultimately dissolved in July 1945, merging into the Korean National Volunteer Corps.

Chosun Symphony Orchestra (조선교향악단; 朝鮮交響樂團)
The orchestra was established in 1940 through the reorganization of members from the Gyeongseong Orchestra and the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Orchestra. Directed by Park Gyeong-ho (박경호), it held its first concert in 1940 at Bumin Hall, featuring works such as Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony" and Beethoven's "Egmont Overture." Additionally, it premiered the dance drama "Heungbu and Nolbu," composed and conducted by Kim Seong-tae, which marked a significant development in dramatic music inspired by folklore. Shortly thereafter, the orchestra presented Kim Seong-tae's original work "Heungbu and Nolbu" under his direction, engaging in ambitious performances. However, the onset of the Pacific War ultimately led to the disbandment of the Joseon Symphony Orchestra.

Kim Saeng-ryeo (김생려), along with Hong Nan-pa (홍난파) and Park Gyeong-ho (박경호), played a pivotal role in introducing Western music to Korea during the Japanese occupation and in the subsequent periods, including the Korean War. These three individuals endured one of the most challenging eras in Korean history, and despite facing censorship, destruction, and loss of their works, their legacy endures. Kim Saeng-ryeo was the last to continue his musical career until his death in 1995. Although their contributions are not widely recognized, many Koreans today continue to honour their achievements, particularly through performances of orchestral works created by them, highlighting the significant impact these artists had on the cultural landscape during a tumultuous time.
The inaugural broadcasting station in Korea commenced operations on February 16, 1927, following preliminary test broadcasts initiated in December 1924 by the Governor-General and the Chosun Ilbo. These early broadcasts included a test by Yangak, although detailed records of the Governor-General's broadcasts on the 9th and 10th remain scarce. Notably, Hong Nan-pa participated in the Chosun Ilbo's test broadcasts on the 17th and 18th, with documented evidence and photographs showcasing his violin performance.

The introduction of Western music to Korea can be traced back to the 1910s, particularly through the efforts of Hong Nan-pa, aligning with a broader cultural exchange during that era. This music, referred to as Gukak or Changga, distinguished itself from children's songs, pop songs, and folk songs, appealing not only to Koreans but also resonating with Japanese audiences, indicating a successful integration of Western musical influences. In 1919, the Gyeongseong Music Friends Association was established, marking the inception of an orchestra. By 1926, prior to the country's opening, the Central Music Association was formed, which performed a celebratory piece for the inauguration of the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station. During this period, Hong Nan-pa was studying in Japan, while key figures such as Park Kyung-ho and Mrs. Boots from Ewha Woman’s University (이화여자대학교; 梨花女子大學校) played significant roles. The Central Music Association was comprised of approximately 15 members, including notable musicians like Kim Hyeong-jun and Choi Ho-young, who contributed to its leadership. Mrs. Booth, a graduate of the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Music, was proficient in multiple instruments and significantly advanced the local music scene.

The trombone on the left was Park Geon-won (박건원), and the trombone on the right was Baek Byeong-gon (백병곤). The photo above is a performance scene taken when the group was first formed and broadcast.
The JODK orchestra made its debut on April 13, 1928, initiating a new era of music broadcasting. This ensemble, which began as an amateur group, was notable for being the first professional orchestra in the region to compensate its members. Among those involved were Park Kyung-ho and Hong Nan-pa, with around 18 musicians participating in performances two to three times monthly. In 1929, after returning from his studies in Japan, Hong Nan-pa witnessed a flourishing Western music environment. He dedicated himself to education at the Central Day-care Centre and revitalized the jazz band, which subsequently engaged in active broadcasting efforts.
The initial volume of Hong Nan-pa's extensive collection of 100 children's songs from the Joseon era was published, coinciding with a surge in music broadcasting activities at Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station. In 1931, Hong Nan-pa travelled to the United States for further studies, yet the foundation of his work remained intact, allowing him to return in 1933. During this period, a second Korean language broadcasting station was established, contributing to a more vibrant musical landscape.

Below it says -> ‘1929 Summer JODK Broadcast – Jazz broadcast in Seoul for the first time’ - From Mr. Nayoung Yoon's home page.
A trio of violinists, including Hong Seong-yu (홍성유) and Lee Young-se (이영세), emerged during this era, alongside notable musicians such as violinist Jeon Su-rin and clarinetist Kim Kyo-seong. These artists, along with drummers and other instrumentalists, were not only prominent composers but also integral members of broadcast orchestras and jazz ensembles. The distinction between classical music, popular music, and children's songs was increasingly blurred, reflecting a unique cultural moment where the categorization of music was less significant than the enjoyment it provided.
It is often believed that Hong Nan-pa exclusively performed children's songs and classical music; however, he also released popular songs under various stage names. Actively involved in both broadcasting and academia, he played a significant role in the establishment of the JODK Orchestra at the Gyeongseong Central Broadcasting Station, which was formed on April 13, 1935. This orchestra marked the beginning of extensive musical activities, enhancing the breadth and depth of the station's musical offerings. Notably, in 1985, the Korean music history published by the Korea National University of Arts acknowledged Hong Nan-pa's contributions alongside those of Chae Dong-seon (채동선) and others, highlighting their performances of orchestral works by Im Dong-hyeok and the emergence of creative music in Korea. His composition "The Heart of a Traveler" was particularly significant, as it was made possible through the efforts of this orchestra.

A photograph capturing contemporary musicians, including Hong Nan-pa, Hong Seong-yu, Kim Won-bok, Hong Jae-yu, Hong Eun-yu, and Park Gyeong-ho, showcases their collaboration with Hyun Jae-myeong and Dokgo Seon at the broadcasting station. Hong Seong-yu and Kim Won-bok, a couple united by their passion for the violin and piano, gained fame as a duo through numerous concerts and activities. After studying in the United States, they adopted their current name in 1929. Hong Nan-pa also served as the first chairman of the Joseon Music Association, established in 1930 while he was a professor at Yeonhui University, and he earned a doctorate in vocal music in 1937.

Although Hong Nan-pa passed away prematurely, his legacy continued to flourish after Korea's liberation. He was instrumental in the founding of the Seoul National University College of Music and remained an influential figure in the music industry until his death in 1970. His connections in broadcasting extended to notable figures such as Chae Seon-yeop, Lee Heung-ryeol, Park Tae-hyun, and Hong Jong-in, further solidifying his role as a pivotal figure in the development of Korean music.
Tumblr media
Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station Orchestra and Wang Su-bok (경성방송국 관현악단과 왕수복)
The musical endeavours of Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station were significantly impacted by the outbreak of World War II, coinciding with the death of Hong Nan-pa. Following his passing, Kim Saeng-ryeo, who had been assisting Hong as a conductor, assumed leadership of the Broadcasting Orchestra and appointed Gye Kye-sik as a temporary conductor. However, the arrival of Japanese conductor Eiji Nakagawa led to complications in the conducting process, reflecting the broader turmoil of the war, which rendered the activities of Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station increasingly futile during this tumultuous period.
The legacy of Hong Nan-pa looms large, overshadowing many contemporaries whose contributions remain less recognized, yet numerous individuals forged connections with Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station. Notably, figures such as Park Kyung-ho and Kim Saeng-ryeo played pivotal roles in this narrative. Park Kyung-ho was particularly influential in the station's musical landscape, especially during Hong Nan-pa's absence abroad, and he was instrumental in significant events such as the station's inauguration in 1927 and the celebratory concert for the second broadcast in April 1933, highlighting his central role in the station's history.

Following the liberation in 1946, KBS assumed its current programming responsibilities, with Kim Saeng-ryeo serving as the planning manager. In June 1949, he made history as the first individual in broadcasting to undertake a six-month training trip to the United States, subsequently working with the Voice of America during the 1950s. Born in 1912, Kim was a student at Yeonhui College in 1939 under the direction of conductor Hong Nan-pa. After Hong's death in 1941, Kim took over the leadership of the Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra at Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station and continued to oversee the KBS Orchestra until after the liberation.

Kim Saeng-ryeo's Memoir (from the 1977 edition of Korean Broadcasting System)
In the spring of 1939, during the JODK period, he assumed the position of conductor for the broadcasting orchestra, which initially comprised around ten members. Hong Nan-pa, previously known for his accompaniment work, was appointed as the music director of JODK. Following his appointment, he initiated an expansion of the orchestra by acquiring instruments from Japan, which led to an increase in membership to twenty-five. This development culminated in the live broadcast of the Haydn Mozart Symphony, marking a significant milestone as it was also transmitted to Korea.
The formal establishment of the professional orchestra is recognized as occurring on May 16, 1940, under the direction of Hong Nan-pa. The orchestra's repertoire included notable works such as "Spanish Night" by Bizet, "Humoresque" by Dvorak, "Golden Wedding Anniversary" by Marie, "Little Toy Soldier" by Rosey, "Dancing Doll" by Poldini, and "Objects of the Desert" by Zamenik.

Kim Saeng-ryeo (김생려)
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hong Nan-pa fell ill, prompting my engagement as a contractor in 1944. I assumed Mr. Nan-pa's responsibilities and transitioned into a permanent role. Following his passing, I was appointed as a temporary conductor and subsequently became a full-time member of the broadcasting station. Additionally, we expanded our team by recruiting approximately 20 new members and sought opportunities for external performances, culminating in a 40-member orchestra supported by a budget for 25 full-time positions, which proved advantageous for JODK.
At that time, Onoda, a Japanese individual leading the business department, had studied conducting in Vienna under Eiji Nakagawa and was invited to serve as the chief conductor around 1942. Although we held high hopes for his leadership, our initial rehearsal left us disheartened. Nevertheless, around 40 musicians rallied behind Mr. Gye Jeong-sik, who endeavored to facilitate international performances. However, Onoda's nationalistic tendencies hindered these efforts, as he was reluctant to engage in public appearances, possibly due to personal sentiments.
Negotiations with Onoda occurred multiple times, with around 20 unpaid members participating in broadcasts under Eiji Nakagawa's direction. Despite his willingness to continue, he insisted that external performances be managed by an accountant, a request that was consistently denied. This marked the initial attempt to cultivate the Korean orchestra movement, which was initiated by a Japanese individual named Han, yet it faced inevitable challenges due to prevailing prejudices.

Ultimately, with the exception of approximately ten exclusive members, all individuals departed from JODK, leading to his resignation and withdrawal from the organization. The former members who left attempted to unite and establish a new orchestra; however, their efforts were unsuccessful. Consequently, the JODK Orchestra reverted to a ten-member ensemble, transforming into an accompaniment orchestra before ceasing to exist after August 15th, maintaining its current form since 1949.
The Seoul Symphony Orchestra, which served as the precursor to the city orchestra, was situated at the Jeongdong Broadcasting Station during this period. Under the guidance of American advisor Rolf Jacobi, a genuine broadcasting initiative commenced, marking the beginning of the symphonic movement.
The War of National Foundation (Movie)
This section discusses President Syngman Rhee, featured in a 2024 Korean independent film directed by Kim Deok-young. The documentary explores the historical significance of Rhee, the first to third President of the Republic of Korea, highlighting his efforts to rescue classical musicians from abduction by founding the 'Naval Military Music Band.'
Tumblr media
Following Korea's liberation from Japanese rule in 1945, the peninsula was divided by the United States and the Soviet Union at the 38th parallel, leading to divergent ideological paths for the North and South. North Korea, influenced by Soviet communism, evolved into a repressive dictatorship that violated human rights and stifled freedom. In contrast, South Korea embraced liberal democracy under American influence. This film examines how two nations, sharing a common language, history, and culture, became polarized into vastly different states, emphasizing Rhee's pivotal role in shaping the Republic of Korea over the past seven decades.

Evaluation
The film occupies a unique space between a biographical portrayal and a documentary focused on a historical event, presenting a nuanced interplay of broader societal changes and individual experiences. It diverges from the typical binary of good versus evil often found in Korean political narratives. Given its exploration of political figures and events, it inevitably elicits varied interpretations influenced by viewers' political affiliations, irrespective of the film's artistic merit.
Syngman Rhee, a figure marked by both significant achievements and controversies, has sparked polarized assessments; some argue the film prompts a reassessment of his legacy, while others contend it distorts historical facts. Critics have labelled the film as one that undermines Rhee's contributions, alleging it misrepresents the spirit of the March 1st movement and unduly glorifies pro-Japanese elements associated with the New Right, despite Rhee's clear anti-Japanese stance.
The discourse surrounding the film reveals a spectrum of opinions, from those who find merit in its message to others who deem it overly simplistic and biased, resulting in a stark division in public reception, as evidenced by emotional responses from viewers.
Establishing the 'Naval Military Music Band'
The film 'The War of National Foundation' is said to have exceeded 820,000 viewers by the 22nd, merely three weeks after its February 1, 2024 release. While it is customary to pay tribute to the founding president, discussions regarding President Syngman Rhee among Koreans are just beginning to emerge. However, an important narrative remains untold in the film; few are aware that President Rhee played a significant role in the advancement of high-level classical music, which is now celebrated by Koreans as a 'K-classic'.

The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 led to the fall of Seoul, forcing musicians to flee amidst the turmoil. In this chaotic environment, there was little support for these artists, compelling them to navigate their own paths. Conversely, Kim Il-sung recognized the strategic value of music for propaganda and invited Jeong Yul-seong, a member of the Chinese Communist Party, to North Korea, granting him the rank of Major in the North Korean Army. Jeong Yul-seong subsequently recruited and forcibly abducted musicians who remained in Seoul, resulting in the capture of many, including baritone Professor Kim Hyung-ro, who was married to Professor Kim Soon-ae, the composer of the Korea Military Academy's school song and known for "Because of You."
In response to these developments, conductor Kim Saeng-ryeo of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra and the era's leading soprano, Kim Cheon-ae, proposed the establishment of a military music corps to President Syngman Rhee. Despite resistance from various military branches due to operational priorities, Chief of Naval Operations Son Won-il, who understood the significance of music as his wife was an Ewha Womans University music graduate, successfully advocated for the initiative, leading to the formation of the 'Naval Military Music Corps' on October 1, 1950.

A total of 130 musicians, both male and female, resided in the 'Bupyeong Inn', a distinctive three-story building shaped like the letter 'ㅁ' in Bupyeong-dong, Busan. This group was responsible for operating a symphony orchestra, a choir, and a creative department. Notable figures among them included composers such as Kim Dong-jin, Kim Seong-tae, Na Woon-young, and Yoon Yong-ha, along with conductors Kim Saeng-ryeo and Lim Won-sik. The ensemble also featured prominent musicians like violinist Ahn Byeong-so, cellist Jeon Bong-cho, pianist Baek Nak-ho, and vocalists Kim Cheon-ae, Lee In-beom, Kim Hye-ran, Hwang Byeong-deok, Oh Hyeon-myeong, and Ahn Hyeong-il. Their performances provided comfort and morale-boosting support to both troops and civilians.
Many of the musicians rescued from potential abduction by North Korean forces under President Rhee Syng-man have become foundational figures in the classical music scene of Korea, contributing to its rich heritage. This location was also the birthplace of Korea's first mixed professional choir. In 1957, the 'Navy Symphony Orchestra' rebranded itself as the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra, continuing its tradition as a leading musical institution. Additionally, it launched 'Jeonghun Music', Korea's inaugural music magazine. Following the recapture of Seoul on November 11, 1950, the 'Jeonghun Music Band' commemorated the Navy's fifth anniversary with a series of six concerts over three days at the 'Sigongwan' in Myeongdong, aimed at uplifting the spirits of UN forces and local citizens affected by the war.
The upcoming year will mark the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Korea Navy, established on November 11, 1945. This milestone raises the question of whether there will be a celebratory performance to honour the Navy's role in founding the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra. The unprecedented policy of safeguarding musicians during wartime is a significant aspect of history, and it serves as a reminder of President Rhee Syng-man's contributions to the arts and culture during a tumultuous period.

Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal, alive parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids) Baek Hyun-woo (Queen of Tears, nothing wrong with them out of the ordinary and they are in the drama a significant amount.) Ha Eun-gyeol (Twinkling Watermelon, very loving parents and the deafness and their reliance on him is not anyone's fault)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned. ***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. ****This character is tricky because he was explicitly raised as an orphan by his grandma, his father didn't sign his birth certificate (Korean equivalent of this), and he's registered as the child of his grandmother, not his actual mom. His grandma is dead by the beginning of the series and he is living alone without family, so I think he counts as an orphan.
Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness
