The grifters that make up the troll-industrial complex are not okay. "One can see the sheen of desperation in the world of self-identified conservatives who make a living by "triggering" the liberals. The usual dose of outrage bait isn't working as well any longer, so the right-wingers are escalating the provocations. Tucker Carlson, for example, gave a glow-up interview with manosphere "influencer" Andrew Tate, who is being held in Romania on charges of sex trafficking and rape. Daily Wire anti-trans provocateur Matt Walsh is selling plushies of himself clad only in a diaper, which he encourages people to give to children. Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro, on the other hand, made a nearly hour-long video tantrum about "Barbie," complete with setting the dolls on fire. The clawing need to get attention from progressives seems to be driving these engagement farmers a little nuts, as they up the weird-and-evil ante, hoping to get those precious clicks and plays. [...] "The escalation of shock value tactics, on both the right and the pretending-not-to-be-right political classes, are likely rooted in the same cause: The slow motion collapse of Twitter, now rebranded "X," under the leadership of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. While these folks have various outlets, both in the media and social media, ultimately their business model of trolling depends heavily on Twitter. "Grifters need people to harass and a mainstream discourse to counter. As traffic takes a nosedive and Twitter becomes less a part of the conversation, it's going to be harder for these folks to make money," Melissa Ryan, a strategist who helps counter online disinformation, told Salon.
"They need us. We don't need them:" The fall of Twitter is making the trolls and grifters desperate
The clawing need to get attention from progressives seems to be driving these engagement farmers a little nuts, as they up the weird-and-evil ante, hoping to get those precious clicks and plays.

"What Musk has proven through his actions and his statements is that he's committed to serving the trolls and the fraudsters first and the ordinary good faith users second," explained Brian Hughes of American University, who is the co-founder of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL). But, he noted, Musk is "blinded by his own ideology" and can't see how this is backfiring. "As normal people, for lack of a better term, continue to leave Twitter, that's actually going to cause probably a reduction in the use of the platform by these trolls and these fraudsters. They don't have their audience of targets that they need," he continued.

HAHAHAHAHAHA die mad about it, trolls. Full offense.

I Want a Nurse
Bucky Barnes x fem!Avenger!reader
(starts with Matt Murdock x reader but just trust me)
Rating: Mature (it starts slow, I’ll give a heads up when we get close to any action)
Summary: Finding herself in unfamiliar territory, or unfamiliar times to be exact, an Avenger must find her way home or risk permanently altering her timeline. If only Bucky Barnes were less charming her task would be much easier.
I realized I didn’t do the read more thing on chapter one and I am so so sorry about that.
Chapter Two - Lost and Found
Tumblr media
Present Day, 3 Days Since Nightingale’s Disappearance - Avengers Tower
Bucky’s headache only got worse. Maybe Murdock did have powers, and it was inflicting a wicked headache on him with his glare.
“Just because I’m not her biggest fan, doesn’t mean I’m going to evaporate her.” Barnes mumbled, knowing Matt could hear him.
“Why’d she take the hit for you? You hate her.” If Murdock’s glare was meant to be intimidating, Bucky couldn’t help how he rolled his eyes in response.
“I don’t hate her.” This same discussion, again and again.
“You’re mean to her, always have been!”
“Just because I don’t want her to baby me doesn’t mean I’m being mean to her!” Was it so wrong that Bucky just wanted her to keep her damn distance?
“She’s just trying to do her job!”
“Yeah? And look where that got her!” Bucky and Matt were yelling now, bringing Steve and Sam back from the kitchen
“Really guys?” Sam was exasperated. He had been desperate to keep the peace between them, but after so many days of no answers Sam’s tactics of mediating were losing efficacy.
Matt had been visiting for the last three days, desperate for a crumb of information but still there were no leads, no guesses, no hits on where she could be. Unfortunately, this also meant that Bucky and Matt had been at each other’s throats for those three days.
Bucky was bouncing between guilt at Nightingale going missing because of him, and anger that she hadn’t left when he told her to.
Matt had settled on anger, directed specifically at Barnes.
“You both know she would hate this, she hated when you two fought.” Steve tried to ease the tension in the room, but mentioning her only made Matt clench his fist tighter.
“We moving into the past tense already?” He spoke lowly, a gravely hum lacing his voice.
“No, no we are not. We are still looking Matt, we’re going to find her and bring her home.” Steve was quick to correct himself. 3 days was hardly time to call it quits but there was nothing to go on.
Dr St Helens had been a celebrated, award winning, and innovative scientist and inventor, but his mental breakdown after having his latest and most life changing work stolen tied with his wife leaving him left him more than a broken man. In his grief he had turned to reviving old hydra tech and merged it Chintari remnants from the Battle of New York. It was a Frankenstein effort of destructive rays and weaponry that had Tony, Peter, and Bruce scratching their heads trying to figure out what the goal was when not even Dr St Helens was cognizant enough to explain. Even reaching out to Shuri proved a puzzle for the young genius, but she was sure it could be solved.
“If the mad man can create it, we can certainly understand it.” She had said, and Bucky desperately wanted to believe that. Surely if she could fix him, this would be a walk in the park?
It was then they heard an alarm from down the hall begin to go off, jumping and running down the hall as they ran towards Tony’s lab just in time to have Peter cut around the corner - his eyes wide with surprise and confusion as he spoke to them.
“You’re going to want to see this.”
—————————————————-
June 27th 1943, French Countryside, 20 miles from the Italian Border
“And there we go, a picture for your new file.” Lorraine smiled at her handiwork, a crisp new photo of her newest friend.
“Thank you Lorraine.”
“Of course! Got to get you all official before we head in to Italy.”
Y/n smiled, hopefully she could get a message to Steve, she could only pray he would be over here soon enough and she would be able to meet him. If she could make enough of an impact in his memory, he would know where she was in the future!
“I really appreciate Mrs Daniels taking me on.” It would’ve been a nightmare trying to get through war torn Europe without attaching herself to this group.
“Oh think nothing of it, we’re glad to have you and your magic hands here helping us.”
Y/n laughed as Lorraine wiggled her fingers. The girls had begun to joke that she had magic hands, since all the men she healed made such speedy recoveries. In truth, y/n was really holding herself back. It was like working in the hospital again, healing to a comfortable level without being overly suspicious. Unfortunately the men were still heading out despite the pain, feeling better than they had in a long time, meaning despite her best efforts they were still out of the tent much earlier than normal.
She’d have to be careful, no sense getting caught up in trying to explain her powers. That would lead to so difficult conversations and would definitely delay her meeting Steve if not derailing her plans entirely by catching Hydra’s attention.
They would be meeting up with a couple of men from the unit stationed in Azzano and they would be escorting them from there. The unit George and his friend Paul were from would also be joining, the need for more soldiers on the Italian front increasing as more men were being captured.
Y/n was glad she could keep an eye on her new friends a while longer. While she had only been in 1943 for a week now, Lorraine had become a fast friend - and George always seemed to follow her around with Paul right behind him. It was a funny scene to watch George trying to sweet talk her outside the medical tent, trying to get her sweetened sympathy with a burnt hand or a cut forehead, but Lorraine saw right through it. Y/n and Paul could only laugh at the scene.
With her small bag, a spare duffle from a soldier in George’s unit, filled with spare clothes and toiletries from the other nurses and shipments sent over, she climbed into the truck next to Lorraine.
“I wonder what the temperature will be like in Italy, wish it wasn’t so hot.” A young nurse, Janet complained next to them as she fanned herself.
They had been traveling for a bit, and with every mile Y/n had missed the air conditioner of her time but the others could only laugh at Janet’s plight.
“Maybe if you didn’t wear that fancy dress, you wouldn’t be overheating.” Another nurse joked from further in the truck
“Hey! Moving camps means new men, I want to make a good first impression!” Janet was a sweet but silly girl, far too invested in romance during a war. Her father, some important banker in New York, was apparently very opposed to her nursing, but eventually relented to his only daughter’s whims. And nobody could complain when her father sent goodies and treats for all of them in his care packages.
The truck came to a stop, as the girls laughed again.
“Is a lovely thing to hear the laughter of pretty ladies.” A hearty voice laughed, coming to the end of the truck and looking up at them. “It’s a pleasure to meet you ladies, my name is Corporal Dugan, I’ll be escorting you ladies on to Azzano.”
The man smiled up under this mustache and y/n grinned. Dum Dum Dugan, y/n remembered him from Steve’s Howling Commando stories. This was her lucky day indeed.
“Hello Corporal Dugan, do take care of us?” Lorraine shook his hand sweetly from her end seat, with Mrs Daniels riding up front Lorraine was their unofficial leader.
“It’ll be my pleasure.” He grinned, tipping his head with a wink to some of the younger nurses before walking away.
It was another couple of hours of travel before they made it to Azzano, soldiers were there helping the nurses out of the truck and unloading fresh supplies while y/n dawdled as she stretched in the truck, last one out. As she went to hop out of the truck though, her foot caught as she took the hand of the soldier waiting for her.
Luckily he grabbed her before she fell and placed her gently on the ground.
“You just got here and you’re already falling for me, huh doll?”
She laughed, familiar with the soldiers’ easy flirting at this point, before she looked up into a smiling face that surprised her.
Smiling down at her was none other than Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.
How could she forget what else was waiting in Azzano?
———————————————
Present Day - 3 Days Since Nightingale’s Disappearance - Avengers Tower
“What is it?” Matt asked as the others stared at the screen. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“It’s a picture of y/n, but it’s…well she’s…” Peter struggled to find the words before Natasha spoke up
“It’s a file from World War Two that’s part of some online archive, information from this woman as a nurse in 1943.”
They all stared at her, that was definitely her face, her hair done differently to suit the time, and the picture faded with age. The file information was minimal, a piece of a larger file of information from the Smithsonian’s online collection.
“Nurse Y/n l/n, picture from June 1943, age y/a” Steve spoke clearly.
“That doesn’t make any sense. It’s probably some sort of mix up because they look similar.” Matt was confused, everyone was. But this wasn’t just a simple mix up, this woman smiling back at them was every inch y/n.
As Steve and Bucky stared at the picture more and more, they felt a scratch at their brains, like there was something they were supposed to be remembering. Bucky’s headache only grew worse, finding himself clutching his hand to his head.
“You ok, Buck?” It was Steve that spoke, turning to Bucky as the groan left his lips. His head hurt, the light hurt, and now this was making it worse as he felt his brain struggle to make sense of it all.
“Headache, since the fight. I got thrown into a building.” He grumbled as if it was obvious
“Y/n would’ve checked for that and fixed it.” Steve was wary, and Bucky couldn’t tell if it was sympathy or concern in his tone.
“Yeah well it came back after she left.” Damn what kind of lights did Stark use in this lab? It was too bright.
“I’ve had a headache for days now too.” When Steve said this, Bucky finally looked up to meet his gaze.
“What if it isn’t a simple headache Buck, what if something weirder is going on?”
“What on earth do you-“ but Bucky was cut off as memories began to flash in his mind, bringing him to his knees. New memories. Not memories that Hydra had taken, but something fresh.
A truck, new nurses, a charming laugh and the surprised face of a cute nurse as he caught her.
Steve was at his side as he clutched his head and groaned out his realization to the room.
“I know where she is.”
—————————————————
June 27th 1943, Azzano, Italy - US Military Camp
“Oh, uh, thank you, sir.” Y/n scurried to steady herself out of his grasp. Sergeant Barnes was no fan of hers in the future and she didn’t want to bother him further by antagonizing him in the past.
“You’re very welcome, if you’d like I can take your bag and lead you on to your friends.” He flashed her a winning smile, his eyes still bright despite what he’d seen so far. Y/n could only smile back briefly before averting her eyes.
“Oh that won’t be necessary, I’m sure you’re busy sir and-“
“Bucky, please. Sir makes me feel old. And I promise I’m not busy.” he laughed
A chill ran down her spine at the name, she was never allowed to call him Bucky. The one time it slipped she got a glare, and never had since.
“I don’t want to intrude.” A weak excuse
“You’re not intruding. This is entirely self serving I assure you, see I’m trying to get a nice in with the nurses so if you end up stitching me up, you might be gentle about it.” Again he smiled with a wink, and she finally relented her grasp on her bag. She could be nice, she could be civil, and then she would avoid him until Steve arrived.
“Thank you.” She smiled lightly at him as he held out his arm. She looked at him now, cocking an eyebrow.
“It was raining earlier today and the ground is still slippery, I’d hate for you to fall.”
The ground looked fine, but again she decided to humor him.
It reminded her of Matt, walking like this. She knew that Matt was perfectly capable of walking around on his own but it made her feel useful to him and he always said he loved having his pretty girl on his arm.
She’s made it a week without missing Matt, but this Bucky’s charm reminded her of his humor so much her heart clenched.
“So, I’ve given you my name, could I have yours?” He chirped beside her as they walked.
“Y/n l/n” he complimented it before they devolved into the usual pleasantries, where are you from, how long have you been overseas, etc etc etc. It was funny to hear Bucky explain his life to her, while she already knew. He was from Brooklyn, he had his mom and his little sister Rebecca, his best friend Steve was a pain in his neck which only made y/n laugh
“Yeah he’s a scrappy thing, I miss his fire out here though.” He chuckled, a hint of sadness laced his humored tone.
“Maybe you’ll get to see him soon, maybe on leave?” She smiled, knowing that he would very much be seeing Steve soon, sooner than he thought to be sure. Though he’d be decidedly less scrappy.
“Yeah, maybe, it’d be nice to be home for a bit.” Now his smile was genuine and light, memories of home bringing some energy back to him.
As they approached the tent where she heard the laughter of her fellow nurses, he tipped his head to her, handing her bag back to her.
“Well Miss, this is your stop.”
“Thank you very much Sergeant Barnes”
“Bucky, doll, please.” He placed his hand over his heart, feigning heartache as a smile dance across his lips. God had that look ever been directed at her? Did Sergeant Barnes even smile like that anymore?
“Have a good evening Sergeant Barnes.” She shook her head as she pulled back the flap, making her way in with the other nurses with a smile on her face.

Many of the world’s most beloved frogs and amphibians are headed for extinction, but inside “The Ark” in Panama, some of those threatened species are given a fighting chance. Using innovative technology and breakthrough genetics, researchers have ignited a cadre of solutions to save these rare and cherished species.
The Ark at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama houses hundreds of large, captive communities of frogs, some of which no longer exist in the wild. Here, scientists hope to bring these species back from the brink of extinction and solve the world’s worst wildlife pandemic: an amphibian-killing fungus known as chytrid.
In a quarantined lab, these biologists bathe frogs in fungicide and hope to spark a viable immune response from the captive animals. Meanwhile, in the field, other researchers use artificial intelligence to listen to frog songs and identify so-called “lost frogs” that survive chytrid in the wild — any of which may hold the key to fighting the disease. Safeguarding a future for frogs isn't easy, but these tactics in Panama have been so successful that they’re being replicated in facilities across the globe. The effort may seem monumental, but the safety and preservation of amphibians worldwide hangs in the balance.

Backgrounds With Class: Simic Scientist
I'll be honest: Ravnica has always fascinated me. I was a high schooler when the first set came out, and I was immediately consumed creating characters for the setting. Now that we've actually received my long-awaited crossover, I thought it would be nice to write a love letter to the setting in the form of another Backgrounds with Class series. After all: some guilds have natural class choices tied in, from a conceptual standpoint. Boros and Fighter, Izzet and Wizard, Selesnya and Druid. But guilds aren’t class-restricted, and so I wonder what it would look like if you paired every class with every guild background, even the ones that seem at odds, like Izzet and Barbarian, or Gruul and Artificer.  So I thought about it, and this is what I came up with.  Some character concepts for each class, and each Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica background for each class.
The Simic Scientist Artificer was always a practical sort.  Enamored with the surgeon’s art from his youth and with a fast friend of decades working in the Izzet League, he’s found ways to adopt the other science guild’s technology for medical use on a number of occasions, particularly their chemistry.  The reverse is also true- unbeknownst to those around him, he’s been trading insider secrets for his colleague’s aid.  He doesn’t view this as a betrayal- to his mind, it’s a crime that there isn’t already an exchange of innovation in the regular course of things.  Surely their fields would advance much more quickly with the aid of other points of view.
The Simic Scientist Barbarian is an experimental direction for the Guardian Project, a soldier with adaptive talents flexible enough to change specialization on the fly or between engagements.  Trained with weapons and spliced with at least a little sluiceway scorpion, she believes wholeheartedly in the assurances of her experimental overseer that she will one day no longer need armaments of steel, as her hybrid traits and experimental mutagenic adrenal glands grow into full maturity.
The Simic Scientist Bard has a job as an educator, putting her keen understanding of biology and biomancy to work in the classroom imparting wisdom to her students.  Adept at teaching by multiple avenues to suit different learning styles, she is always conscientious to mix the practical and hands-on with deep concepts, and takes the careers of her students very seriously after graduation.  In her off hours, she works as a consultant for other matters, both in the lab and on the street, and has started to make a name for herself as one of the public faces of the Combine.
The Simic Scientist Cleric kneels at no altar that the people of Ravnica would know, but many of her peers would understand, if not condone.  The Simic Combine is not a religious organization, but surely they can see that knowledge itself is a thing divine no less than the Worldsong of the Conclave or the Orzhov’s Church of Deals.  While her colleagues view this eccentricity with bemusement and even occasional suspicion, she is more than welcome in the lab, as her work has an uncanny prescient feel to it, often making breakthroughs just when it would be useful.
The Simic Scientist Druid is an oddity even among Simic Biomancers.  Originally a Guardian Project volunteer, this druid is technically a krasis rather than a hybrid, as the ratio of hermit crab to vedalken is too high to qualify her as a simic hybrid.  Still loyal to the combine that reforged her into a clumsy new shell-bearing body, the druid serves the Hull Clade, her defensively-oriented mind an asset to guardian squads in the field and biomancers working with shell, carapace, and scale in the lab.
The Simic Scientist Fighter is a typical product of the Guardian Project: a disciplined, careful, and tactically gifted elf with latent mollusc traits.  Trained for both long-range and short-range combat, he is being groomed for a position as a squadron leader to field both terrestrial and aquatic threats- a true amphibious soldier.  This flexibility is reflected in his mindset- despite his participation in the Guardian Project and aggressive skillset, he is a Holdfast advocate, claiming it’s far more important for the Combine to ground themselves than to expand aggressively; overreach is a mistake.
The Simic Scientist Monk is an experimental departure from tradition.  Raised deep underwater as a potential Deepsage, their tradition of unarmed combat has met with modern biomancy and medical knowledge to produce a warrior with a literal healer’s touch.  Mastering the flow of vital energies and fluids through their own body and those of others, they are as skilled a healer as a bodyguard, equally adept at setting bones and force-healing contusions as bringing death with a touch.
The Simic Scientist Paladin follows an uncommon tradition among elves, a holdover  from his time among the Selesnya growing up.  While he’s firmly an Upwelling adherent, confident that change is the way forward for the Combine, his own magical tradition is among the oldest on Ravnica, as he swore an oath to life itself to be a light in the world.  Many of his colleagues shake their heads at the juxtaposition, but he’s not dissuaded by their confusion- after all, Upwelling is a resurgence of old matters and ways, not an act of genesis.
The Simic Scientist Ranger is a field researcher, a lab assistant who, after his amphibian hybridization, seeks to assess the results of his guild’s work in the field.  From chill ocean below to lofty aeries above, he ranges to see that the Combine’s work finds its niche, and observe how the web of life on Ravnica changes to fit.  He’s also one of the hunters the Combine turns to when they have need of samples from exotic wildlife, or when a krasis proves disastrous for its environment and must be euthanized.
The Simic Scientist Rogue was part of the Combine’s covert troubleshooting force before the inception of the Guardian Project, and remains so to this day.  Usually dispatched as an investigator or recovery specialist, as the guild has ramped up its preparations for wartime she has found herself more and more involved in guerrilla action against threats preemptively.  Always a proponent of striking harder sooner, she is keen to do whatever she can to keep the Simic at its best.
The Simic Scientist Sorcerer, as a prospective member of Gyre Clade, often finds herself involved in the less physical of the guild’s pursuits.  Be it assessing the mana currents of the hidden oceans or seeking strange weather phenomena to observe the dispersal of energy, her apprenticeship has been anything but dull.  It’s helped to give focus to her talents, though, which run toward the stormy, and often leave her struggling to pay attention to things if she’s not confronted with novelty now and again.
The Simic Scientist Warlock came up from the zonots with the second generation of merfolk to grace the surface.  Having long ago made peace and pact with a great beast of the deep, she quickly found her talents for team support in high demand among Guardian Project strike teams and Crypsis Clade scouting missions.  She’s very protective of the fine abalone necklace she wears loose around her neck; it’s both a mark of her pact and the only thing she brought with her to remember her parents by.
The Simic Scientist Wizard is, by all accounts, brilliant- surgeon extraordinaire and transmuter-scientist of the Fin clade, it seems there is little he cannot do if he sets his mind and hands to it.  Of the two, the surgeon’s path is far more important to him, as he would rather save lives with tools and expertise than work at biomancy- so much so that he’s rejected or missed opportunities for more profitable apprenticeships in favor of earning his surgical license and trying for a private practice.  Unfortunately, the money’s run out, and he’s recently had to turn his mind from clean, sterile lab work to the rough conditions and uncertain developments of field work.

In Blood and Iron (part 1)
Characters: Tony Stark and Steve Rogers
Word Count: 900
Tagging: @goodoldfashionedengineer (this is partly your fault, my friend)
Notes: a Villian Tony Stark story. That's all.
──────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───
The thing about people is they can only take so much.
They can only take so much tragedy, so much misfortune, before they crumble.
Maybe it was the fact that no matter how much he tried to help, nothing seemed to change. Maybe it was just a slip in morals. Afterall, everyone knew he had it in him.
The thing is, nobody noticed when it happened.
Stark had always had a way about him. Everything he had ever made was just one bad day away from bringing destruction. If any of his projects made it to the wrong hands, there was no telling what exactly would happen.
That’s just what people had come to expect.
There should have been warnings. There probably were.
He had always sworn that he was trying to help.
That he knew what he was doing.
Nobody saw anything wrong with him. He could charm his way into anything, and if that hadn’t worked? He wasn’t against paying for what he wanted.
So why was he standing against the others? Why were the people he once called friends standing in his door?
The door of the lab had opened and Stark didn’t bat an eye to it. He was waiting for them. He knew exactly what was going to happen.
It wasn’t as many as he was expecting. Only one had come. Rogers.
Was this a way of intimidating? Were they trying to get under his skin?
Tony hadn’t even stopped what he was doing. He didn’t bother with niceties these days.
An old friend looked back at him. Watched him.
Neither said a word.
“Tony,” concern was all that seemed to pull from the hero’s voice.
“Steve,” the tone was empty.
The lights flickered.
The larger man shifted his weight, “We need to talk.”
“I’m busy,” Tony pushed from his table to the computer.
“We can talk while you work,” Steve crossed his arms.
There was no response.
“Tony,” he tries again.
The younger man rolled his eyes, “Five minutes.”
“What’s going on with you?”
Was he really asking that? Tony couldn’t help but laugh.
Steve stared at him, confusion twisting his face, “What’s so funny?”
“You think something is wrong? Isn’t that cute?” Steve stood up straighter.
Stark tapped his hand in rhythm to his words, “I’m helping. Like you. Isn’t that what we do this for? We’re heroes for a reason.”
Steve stayed quiet.
“Cat got your tongue? This was your conversation to start,” the chair rolls over to the work area again.
“People are dying, Tony.”
Ah. There it was. The true reason for this.
“Casualties come with innovation. You of all people should know that.”
Wires spark.
“You’ve always cared about people. Where did that go? What happened to you?” Steve questioned with an even voice.
Tony knew he struck a chord.
“I needed to change tactics. I’m sure you understand, Cap,” his voice dipped, “Now. I suggest you leave, yes?”
It wasn’t a question. Steve didn’t budge.
“The Tony Stark I know would never hurt people,” The captain was playing towards humanity.
“Hurting people? I’m saving them from themselves. You’ve seen what happens when there’s no proper leader. Who better to lead than me?” He laughed.
Steve stepped forward, “The only person that needs saving is you. We can help you, Tony. Let us help you get the help you need.”
Stark barks a laugh.
Rogers stands his ground.
“I suggest you leave,” Tony finally looks at the Avenger.
The gold eyes seem tired.
“Think about what I’ve said. Please,” Steve turns to leave.
The door closes behind him.
Metal crashes to the floor. It’s kicked aside as its crafter moves. Anger boils.
“Who does he think he is telling me what to do?” He yells at nobody.
A screwdriver hits the door.
“He wants to play like I’m not helping! I’m doing more than they are!”
Electricity cracks.
“How could anyone think I’m not?” Doubt creeps in.
“I’m not the bad guy here!” He speaks to an absent audience.
Who was he trying to convince? Nobody heard his pleads. There was nobody but Tony and his tech.
“I’m helping them! Saving them! They’re bound to destroy themselves. I can stop that.”
An attempt at reasoning.
He moves to pick up the discarded toys.
Wasn’t that all this was? A game? A game of life.
Some die for it, but how else will he know what works? Science has its dark side for a reason.
The suit piece is placed back on the table.
Who cares about a few lives when everyone else will be safe in the end?
Tony drags his hand against the table.
He knows he isn’t in the wrong. He knows he can’t be.
He knows what he’s doing. This is exactly what he’s supposed to be doing.
Who does Rogers think he is to get in the way of that? He’s just getting in the way of the future. He’s just scared of the world moving forward. That’s it.
He’s just scared.
Tony laughs into his self made silence.
The world is his to make. The only thing in his way?
The past that refuses to leave.
It’s an easy fix, really.
All he has to do is rid of it if he wants to move forward.
It’s about time the captain moved on anyway, don’t you think?
It’s time to make room for the future.

AFMC innovation team revolutionizing stealth fighter fleet
Published June 7, 2023
By 412th Test Wing Public Affairs
EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --
An F-35 from the 461st Flight Test Squadron recently took flight here with a complement of software applications developed by government and industry providers previously tested on the F-22 – demonstrating for the first time the ability to use the same tactical software applications on both stealth fighters.
That success was immediately followed by another milestone when those applications were updated by software developers at Hill AFB in Utah and flown at Edwards less than 24 hours later.
These F-35 flights were the latest successes of an innovation project developed by a team of Edwards test pilots, software developers from the 309th Software Engineering Group and the Air Combat Command Federal Laboratory. This project has now accomplished three key advancements that team members call game-changers for the future of the stealth fighter fleet, and potentially all DOD aircraft. These innovations are the ability to use the same software across different military aircraft; the ability to source that software from a diverse set of suppliers including software industry leaders and government labs; and the ability to update that software in less than a day, 30-60 times faster than previously possible. Together these improvements are poised to deliver cutting-edge technology to the stealth fighter fleet at a fraction of the current time and cost, team members say.
Historically, military aircraft have relied solely on the aircraft manufacturer to perform software upgrades or modifications, with limited ability to integrate software from external vendors. Additionally, because of the integrated nature of stealth aircraft software, development and implementation of software changes have previously required a lengthy process, limiting front-line aircraft to annual software updates regardless of operational developments and requirements. Further, each aircraft required a unique development and testing process, driving up costs and delaying implementation.
To change this dynamic, the team partnered to develop and implement a government-owned and -controlled “app store” for these fighters. This was accomplished by combining government-owned software architecture with advanced processing onboard these aircraft and setting up a government software space for new tactical software. The team is now working to populate this space with the advanced capabilities these fighters need to maintain their dominance in the skies.
“The ability to use common software across the F-35 and F-22 is going to dramatically change how we bring capabilities to the front line,” said Lt. Col. Raven LeClair, project co-founder and F-35 test pilot. “Now instead of having to define, purchase, test and field a software capability on each aircraft individually, we can gain a lot of efficiencies by developing a capability once and fielding it on all 5th gen fighters, saving hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more, in development costs and saving years in development time.”
The team also highlighted the benefits brought by access to a larger pool of software providers. “There has been a lot of attention on how the military can harness the best contributions from government, industry and academia to maintain its edge, but there have historically been sizable barriers to entry into the defense market,” said Maj. Allen Black, project co-founder and F-22 test pilot. “This has been especially true with aircraft software since only the aircraft’s manufacturer could develop and integrate software onto the aircraft. They produce a fantastic product but being able to add to that baseline with capabilities created by software leaders in fields like AI/autonomy and cybersecurity will be transformative. This has the added benefit of increasing the number of companies and personnel working to modernize and enhance our combat aircraft fleet, resulting in higher throughput and faster progress modernizing our aircraft,” Black said.
While emphasizing the significant benefits of cross-platform compatibility and a more open market for software, the team is quick to point out that speed of delivery is perhaps the most vital. “The National Defense Strategy identifies the need to rapidly experiment and then streamline acquisitions to get capabilities out to the warfighter on strategically relevant timelines,” said Maj. Cameron Jones, F-22 test pilot and part of the founding team. “It is vital that we are able to rapidly develop and deliver capability, because the best software in the world won’t make a difference if it’s late to the fight.”
The team has taken up that mission and is working to establish that ability on existing weapon systems that weren’t originally built to accommodate the modern pace of software innovation. “This project allows us to load new software and update existing software separate from the safety of flight systems of the aircraft so we can make changes in a matter of hours instead of months. This capability means that developers will be able to make quick changes based off pilot feedback, dramatically shortening the time to get a fieldable product,” Jones said.
“This project helps to set the foundation required for agile combat employment,” said Marine Corps Maj. Kyle McLeod, the project’s lead F-35 test pilot. “We need to be able to rapidly adapt and update our weapon systems based on emerging intel or changing conditions while executing distributed operations. We demonstrated just that with this test. We flew a set of applications at Edwards, updated the simulated threat dataset in the software from the development location at Hill AFB and re-flew the software in less than 24 hours.”
One of the team’s top priorities has been to leverage this new technology to help secure these aircraft from cyberattacks. Omar Morales, F-35 lead software engineer at the 309th SWEG, said, “In addition to ensuring cyber best practices in the software development pipeline, we’re also using this new software environment to add cyber protection tools from leaders in industry. Our test included cybersecurity applications that we are evaluating that can monitor the aircraft and identify anomalous behavior. We are working to leverage these types of products to allow us to identify and then fix potential cyber issues quickly, even between sorties, while also defending the aircraft in real time.”
Team members say this project’s benefits go beyond the improved software capabilities it brings to the aircraft. The project is proving to be a source of inspiration and motivation for those who joined the test world to make a difference. Jarron Lembke, project team lead at the 309th said, “Working on this project has been incredibly fulfilling for our team, as our people genuinely believe they are making a difference for our nation.” Lembke said one of his lead engineers said this flight was one of the proudest moments of his career. The opportunity to collaborate on a new and groundbreaking project that contributes to national defense not only yields immediate capability benefits but is playing a pivotal role in attracting and retaining invaluable talent, Lembke said.
The idea for the project, dubbed Project FOX, was conceived over coffee at Edwards. What followed were months of research with system and software experts and subsequent partnerships that proved vital in shaping and executing the idea. With a plan in place and a team assembled, the group turned to execute but was faced with the stark reality of not having an established line of funding. “The military budgeting process can take upwards of two years so we were worried we might be stuck,” LeClair said. “Fortunately, we had fantastic support from the 412th Test Wing and the wing innovation cell. We briefed them on our idea and plan for execution and they were able to assist us with securing the initial funding, which was vital. Those funds allowed us to get the idea off the ground – literally.”
The idea was submitted to the Air Force’s annual Spark Tank competition, ultimately advancing to become a finalist where it was pitched to the senior leaders of the Air Force including the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. Raymond. The project is now part of the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s Innovation Portfolio and is continuing to revolutionize software development and fielding, including ongoing work on software to control unmanned wingmen, team members said.

Veterinary Software Market Size To Reach $3.02 Billion By 2030
The global veterinary software market size is anticipated to reach USD 3.02 billion by 2030 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.66%% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Veterinarians, veterinary practices, and pet owners can all benefit significantly from veterinary software. The benefits cover a range of areas related to patient care, clinic administration, and communication. Quick access and retrieval of patient records-including lab results, treatment plans, and medical histories-is made possible by digital storage. By doing away with the necessity for paper records, it lessens clutter and the possibility of data loss or damage. Clinics may better regulate patient flow and organize their daily schedules with the assistance of appointment scheduling tools. It minimizes the possibility of establishing multiple reservations or scheduling conflicts. It makes remote consultations possible, enabling vets to treat and counsel patients who are unable to visit the clinic physically. In addition, it broadens the clinic's clientele and offerings, particularly in emergency situations and socially awkward situations.
The market presents plenty of opportunities for expansion and novelty, attributable to industry demands, innovations in technology, and evolving consumer demands. Telemedicine has become increasingly popular in veterinary care, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing telemedicine features that enable veterinarians to consult with patients and monitor them from a distance, veterinary software can take advantage of this trend and broaden its scope of practice. Veterinarian diagnostics might undergo a revolution thanks to AI and machine learning. Diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes can be enhanced by software solutions that use artificial intelligence (AI) for analyzing images, predictive analytics, and disease detection. Businesses of veterinary software can look into ways to grow internationally. Software that supports multi-language and multi-currency capabilities can meet the needs of clinics worldwide as veterinary care becomes more globally distributed.
Market players in the veterinary software space are strategically using mergers and acquisitions to expand their product lines and solidify their positions in the industry. To incorporate the latest innovations and broaden their service offerings, large corporations are purchasing smaller, innovative companies. Concurrently, there is a widespread use of collaboration and partnership strategies, as businesses form alliances to gain access to complementary expertise, expand their market reach, and provide more complete solutions. These adaptable tactics enable veterinary software suppliers to meet the varied demands of the changing veterinary sector, maintain their competitiveness, and take advantage of synergies. For instance, in February 2024, Instinct Science with the assistance of Mainsail partners acquired VetMedux, which is a veterinary education-providing company.
In May 2023, Hippo Manager partnered with Text Request. Users of Hippo Manager Software have access to Text Request's texting module directly from the Hippo Manager interface by using the Text Requests Chrome extension. This means that veterinary clinics can now use the same software they use to manage their daily operations to text clients to set up appointments, send reminders, and more.

Melissa Choi named director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Melissa Choi has been named the next director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, effective July 1. Currently assistant director of the laboratory, Choi succeeds Eric Evans, who will step down on June 30 after 18 years as director.
Sharing the news in a letter to MIT faculty and staff today, Vice President for Research Ian Waitz noted Choi’s 25-year career of “outstanding technical and advisory leadership,” both at MIT and in service to the defense community.
“Melissa has a marvelous technical breadth as well as excellent leadership and management skills, and she has presented a compelling strategic vision for the Laboratory,” Waitz wrote. “She is a thoughtful, intuitive leader who prioritizes communication, collaboration, mentoring, and professional development as foundations for an organizational culture that advances her vision for Lab-wide excellence in service to the nation.”
Choi’s appointment marks a new chapter in Lincoln Laboratory’s storied history working to keep the nation safe and secure. As a federally funded research and development center operated by MIT for the Department of Defense, the laboratory has provided the government an independent perspective on critical science and technology issues of national interest for more than 70 years. Distinctive among national R&D labs, the laboratory specializes in both long-term system development and rapid demonstration of operational prototypes, to protect and defend the nation against advanced threats. In tandem with its role in developing technology for national security, the laboratory’s integral relationship with the MIT campus community enables impactful partnerships on fundamental research, teaching, and workforce development in critical science and technology areas.
“In a time of great global instability and fast-evolving threats, the mission of Lincoln Laboratory has never been more important to the nation,” says MIT President Sally Kornbluth. “It is also vital that the laboratory apply government-funded, cutting-edge technologies to solve critical problems in fields from space exploration to climate change. With her depth and breadth of experience, keen vision, and straightforward style, Melissa Choi has earned enormous trust and respect across the Lincoln and MIT communities. As Eric Evans steps down, we could not ask for a finer successor.”
Choi has served as assistant director of Lincoln Laboratory since 2019, with oversight of five of the Lab’s nine technical divisions: Biotechnology and Human Systems, Homeland Protection and Air Traffic Control, Cyber Security and Information Sciences, Communication Systems, and ISR and Tactical Systems. Engaging deeply with the needs of the broader defense community, Choi served for six years on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, with a term as vice chair, and was appointed to the DoD’s Threat Reduction Advisory Committee. She is currently a member of the national Defense Science Board’s Permanent Subcommittee on Threat Reduction.
Having dedicated her entire career to Lincoln Laboratory, Choi says her long tenure reflects a commitment to the lab’s work and community.
“Through my career, I have been fortunate to have had incredibly innovative and motivated people to collaborate with as we solve critical national security challenges,” Choi says. “Continuing to work with such a strong, laboratory-wide team as director is one of the most exciting aspects of the job for me.”
Success through collaboration
Choi came to Lincoln Laboratory as a technical staff member in 1999, with a doctoral degree in applied mathematics. As she progressed to lead research teams, including the Systems and Analysis Group and then the Active Optical Systems Group, Choi learned the value of pooling expertise from researchers across the laboratory.
“I was able to shift between a lot of different projects very early on in my career, from radar systems to sensor networks. Because I wasn’t an expert at the time in any one of those fields, I learned to reach out to the many different experts at the laboratory,” Choi says.
Choi maintained that mindset through all of her roles at the laboratory, including as head of the Homeland Protection and Air Traffic Control Division, which she led from 2014 and 2019. In that role, she helped bring together diverse technology and human systems expertise to establish the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Group. Among other achievements, the group provided support to FEMA and other emergency response agencies after the 2017 hurricane season caused unprecedented flooding and destruction across swaths of Texas, Florida, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico.
“We were able to rapidly prototype and field multiple technologies to help with the recovery efforts,” Choi says. “It was an amazing example of how we can apply our national security focus to other critical national problems.”
Outside of her technical and advisory achievements, Choi has made an impact at Lincoln Laboratory through her commitments to an inclusive workplace. In 2020, she co-led the study “Preventing Discrimination and Harassment and Promoting an Inclusive Culture at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.” The work was part of a longstanding commitment to supporting colleagues in the workplace through extensive mentoring and participation in employee resource groups.
“I have felt a sense of belonging at the laboratory since the minute I came here, and I’ve had the benefit of support from leaders, mentors, and advocates since then. Improving support systems is very important to me,” says Choi, who will be the first woman to lead Lincoln Laboratory. “Everyone should be able to feel that they belong and can thrive.”
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Choi helped the laboratory navigate the disruptions — with its operations deemed essential — which she says taught her a lot about leading through adversity.
“We solve hard problems at the laboratory all the time, but to get thrown into a problem that we had never seen before was a learning experience,” Choi says. “We saw the entire lab come together, from leadership to each of the divisions and departments.”
That synergy has also helped Choi form strategic partnerships within and outside of the laboratory to enhance its mission. Drawing on her knowledge of the laboratory’s capabilities and its history of developing impactful systems for NASA and NOAA, Choi recently led the formation of a new Civil Space Systems and Technology Office.
“We were seeing this convergence between Department of Defense and civilian space initiatives, as going to the Moon, Mars, and the cislunar area [between the earth and moon] has become a big emphasis for the entire country generally,” Choi explains. “It seemed like a good time for us to pull those two sides together and grow our NASA portfolio. It gives us a great opportunity to collaborate with MIT centrally, and it ties in with our other strategic directions.”
Building on success
Choi believes her trajectory through the technical ranks of Lincoln Laboratory will help her lead it now.
“That experience gives me a view into what it’s like at multiple levels of the laboratory,” Choi says. “I’ve seen what’s worked and what hasn’t worked, and I’ve learned from different perspectives and leadership styles. Strong leaders are crucial, but it’s important to recognize that the bulk of the work gets done by the technical, support, and administrative employees across our divisions, departments, and offices. Remembering being an early staff member helps you understand how hard and exciting the work is, and also how critical those contributions are for our mission.”
Choi says she is also looking forward to expanding the laboratory’s collaboration with MIT’s main campus.
“So many areas, from AI to climate to space, have opportunity for us to come together,” Choi says. “We also have some great models of progress, like the Beaver Works Center or the Department of the Air Force – MIT Artificial Intelligence Accelerator program, that we can build from. Everyone here is very excited about doing that, and it will absolutely be a priority for me.”
Ultimately, Choi plans to lead Lincoln Laboratory using the approach that’s proven successful throughout her career.
“I believe very much that I should not be the smartest person in the room, and I rely on the smart people working with me,” Choi says. “I’m part of a team and I work with a team to lead. That has always been my style: Set a vision and goals, and empower and support the people I work with to make decisions and build on that strategy.”
