Sugarhill Gang es el álbum debut homónimo del influyente grupo de rap Sugarhill Gang. Se considera que es el primer álbum de estudio de hip hop, lo que lleva a más álbumes de estudio de otros raperos. El álbum fue lanzado el 7 de febrero de 1980 por Sugarhill Records y fue producido por Sylvia Robinson.

El sencillo "Rapper's Delight" fue el primer sencillo de rap en convertirse en un éxito Top 40 en el Billboard Hot 100, alcanzando el número 36 en la lista pop de EE. UU. y el número 4 en la lista de R&B. Aunque "Rapper's Delight" fue el único sencillo en las listas de éxitos, el álbum también incluyó el éxito menor, "Rapper's Reprise". Aparte de los dos sencillos y "Sugarhill Groove", el resto del LP consta de varias pistas de soul de tempo lento y un disco instrumental, ya que Sylvia Robinson no creía que un álbum que constara completamente de música hip hop sería comercialmente viable en 1980.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the renowned producer, founder of Sugar Hill Records, singer-songwriter, and Mother of Hip-Hop: Sylvia Robinson—best known for duet-ting as Mickey & Sylvia in 1956 signature version of the song “Love is Strange” and for her solo hits of the 70s. She was also the driving force behind two landmark singles: “Rapper’s Delight” (1979) by The Sugarhill Gang, and “The Message” (1982) by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. “Love is Strange” was written by Bo Diddley (as “Ethel Smith” his then-wife) and it’s been covered countless times. Here’s a 1986 recording I did with my then-band, October (recorded at The Farm rehearsal studio in San Francisco). Our bassist-singer Victor Valverde was inspired by Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together” and he got the bug we should do “Love is Strange” in that style. Our lo-fi rehearsal appeared on a compilation. For our version we switched it from the standard major key to minor key and added a bossa-nova beat, a gospel intent, and a retro drum machine. Ron Davis played drums & timbales, I played Vox electric 12-string w/built-in tremolo, and Victor played bass and sang a powerful lead. Bridget Purifoy and Anna Valdez sang harmonies. Later we played this arrangement live…

New Jersey's Greatest Hits (All Platinum Records - 1971)

All Platinum Records est la première tentative comme patrons de label de ces margoulins d'époux Joe et Sylvia Robinson.

Après avoir réussi dans l'édition musicale, Joe avait réinvesti une partie de son argent dans des petits labels soul ou funk (All Platinum, Stang, Turbo) qui ont vivoté jusqu'à la fin des années 70 avant de faire faillite, faute de succès commercial et les époux Robinson ayant cramé tout leur cash an achetant le catalogue de Chess Records sans rien pouvoir en faire. Ils finirent par décrocher la timbale en créant Sugar Hill Records en 1979, reniflant l'énorme potentiel commercial du hip hop naissant et en arnaquant les premiers rappeurs avec des contrats merdiques.

Reste que notre power couple avait d'excellentes oreilles car New Jersey's Greatest Hits, compilation qui regroupe des morceaux sortis en 45T sur All Platinum, est d'excellente facture. On peut ainsi y retrouver de très belles ballades soul des Moments, très bon trio vocal soul découvert par les frères Mizell, ou encore des Whatnauts. Mais la véritable pépite est le formidablement bien nommé Funky 8 Corners de Willie & The Mighty Magnificients, dont le riff irrésistible réveillera n'importe quel dancefloor endormi et qui fit les beaux jours de la scène Northern Soul.

Les amateurs de jeu des 7 erreurs, pourront rechercher les coquilles sur la pochette. J'ai trouvé pour ma part l'absence d'une apostrophe à New Jerseys sur le recto et le titre crédité aux Whatnauts sur le début de la face B ("Message From A Black Man") n'est pas le bon (il s'agit en fait de "Please Make The Love Go Away").

Robinson was hardly new to the music industry when she formed Sugarhill Records with her husband, Joe Robinson. She was a successful singer, songwriter, and producer even if she wasn't always credited for her work.
