ok first of all, right before I read it I was hoping for a TwiYor chapter so I’m happy that this chapter did revolve around their relationship❤️

AND NOT JUST THEIRS BUT YOR AND HER COWORKERS ❤️❤️

Just like in the last chapter, it seems Endo is trying to show us just how much all the characters have better connected with each other over time. It’s crazy to think about one of the first chapters when Camila was conspiring against Yor for being married. BUT IM DEFINITELY NOT GONNA FORGET TO TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE WHATTT

At first I actually though this happened but it is pretty common for characters to get caught up in their own thoughts (especially Yor & Anya) so I wasn’t surprised when it was only Yor’s imagination BUT I FEEL LIKE ENDO MIGHT BE TEASING US FOR A LATER CHAPTER WHERE WE MIGHT GET OUR TWIYOR BATTLE?? 👀👀

I’ll also admit I thought we might get a small peck from TwiYor as well but I guess not 😭😭

Overall this was a good chapter and it’s definitely one of my favs. If I’m right, I think this is going to be the first chapter of Vol 12 which is crazy to think about

This chapter was INSANELY FUN and had probably THE BIGGEST TEASE IN SPY X FAMILY HISTORY!! 😆 So let's talk about!! 😁

The moment I saw Camilla and Millie, I figured that this was probably gonna be a chapter about our girl Yor...!! 😆 And that got me super excited...!! 😁

After helping Camilla and Millie finish up their work, Sharon decides to invite Yor to have some some drinks with them...!! 😁 And when there's drinks, there's...:

THAT'S RIGHT, DRUNK YOR IS BACK Y'ALL!! 😆😆😆

And when there's a drunk Yor, there's gonna be some shenanigans a foot...!! 😖

So anyway, Millie and Camilla start asking Yor about how things are going at home with Loid and if she's done anything *kissy-kissy* with him... 😏 But Yor gets a little flustered about that and then they ask if she has problems with Loid...! 😌

Sharon, Millie and Camilla start sharing some their problems about their men and how they would "kill" them, which to our drunk little Thorn Princess to think this...:

"OH MY GOODNESS YOR...!! 😆You are just so so so silly...!! 😖"

So to sound normal™ to her coworkers, Yor tries to come up with some issues she has with Loid:

Anyway, after Yor's WILD IMAGINATION about killing Loid, Camilla and the other girls tease Yor some more about her being kissed by Loid that when she got home and was greeted by him, well...:

She completely freaks out and faints, but Loid catches her...!!

And that was Mission 79, a super fun and funny chapter with some crazy stuff thrown into the mix...!! 😁 I just adored this chapter so much, it's probably a new favorite of mine and it's got me excited for what is next to come out this madman's (Endo's) mind...!! 😆

On a side note, I wanted to release this review a lot early today, but some personal stuff came up... And even though today hasn't been best for me, I still wanted to brighten someone else's day with this silly little review of mine, like what this chapter somewhat did for me today...! 😊

So after..... 200 more days without TwiYor interactions, we finally get it 🥰🥰🥰

Anyway, this chapter made me LoL-ed with the way Endo trolling with us 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, I know the policy of Mangaka (or any of professional writters) may not read fanfics to avoid copyright things yada yada....

But it also a common thing that professional writters/publishers to have social media/internet team to monitor fans reactions or fandom in general.

And I have to give kudos to Endo's team here. It seems to me that they managed to summarize current sxf fandom favorite tropes, and give the reports to Endo. So Endo can troll with us 🤣🤣🤣(this purely my speculation. Let's just treat this as joke and something fun, ok?).

Let see how many fan-tropes Endo been using in this chapter:

1. Yor interact more with her coworkers

This character develooment of Yor is good. Because she interacts daily with Anya and Loid, her social skill is improving. Good work, Yor!

2. Yor's coworker invites her to diner, only to gossip about her marriage life

Honestly, I didn't expect Yor to finally have a common chatty chatty office life with her coworkers (I always see them as not good). But look at that, they finally warm up to Yor. Good things start to happen to Yor and I couldn't be more happy! Well, these three still has intention of humiliating Yor, but less intense? So that's a development there.

3. Her coworkers giving ideas of welcome home kiss

Endo said: not now 🤣🤣🤣 But buuuuttt...maybe sometime in the future?????

4. Nest? ABO reference? I'm not a fan of this tropes but.... hmmm.

5. Thorn Princess vs Twilight!!! One of fans favorite!!

Endo said "Only in Yor imagination"

The Problem of Normality (Pt. 2) - Yor in Chapter 79

Due to Chapter 79 and the recent discussions on Twitter, maybe it’s time to continue overthinking about Yor’s characterisation (yay).

To me, how Endo plays with the idea of normality has always been very intriguing, because basically this is a story about a bunch of people trying to act normal in order to hide their secret identities. In a post-war police state where the sense of normality feels so fragile at times. Endo is a comedy genius to give this exceptional spy the best family ever - these two biggest weridos (affectionate) who know nothing about normality. Yor, especially, struggles with grasping the meaning of “normal”, which can easily be found in OED:

As I’ve mentioned in part 1, she is marginalised because of her assassin job. That’s why she tries so hard to “become normal”, and of course, as a result hilarity ensues. 

Normality, however, is the most difficult thing to achieve. Especially when you are hyper-aware you are not sure about what you should really do in situations, and when you feel that you are being observed. 

We talk about normality as if there is a set of doctrines, but no. Normality can be chaotic, as shown in Chapter 77 and 79. It’s just a range of behaviours and reactions that can be comprehended - even when they seem kind of out of place, it should still fit the bill as long as it is within the range. We don’t see how far and wide the range goes. But it does feel like an invisible boundary that you shouldn’t step out of.

One of the many interesting things in Chapter 79 is the different notions or versions of normality which confuse and frustrate Yor.

Yor tries so hard to look normal in front of her colleagues, but still processes it using her old ways - what was “normal” for Yor? She would receive orders/permissions from the Shopkeeper, and she would go straight to her target.

What’s kinda scary is it almost hints how the Shopkeeper maintains control by justifying killing for her:

Why did she become an assassin in the first place? She wanted to protect Yuri, the only family that was left for her. The shopkeeper would “help” her “if it will help make the world a more beautiful place”. Of course from the cruise arc she already knows she doesn’t really care about “the world” - this is just something the Shopkeeper likes to tell her.

Her purpose is gone when Yuri grows up, has a job and moves out. To hide her secret identity as an assassin, she marries Loid.

And so she comes to Loid.

Loid represents a new kind of “normality” in her life. He’s everything she isn’t. He’s charismatic. He’s good at people. And he’s always there to help her and make her feel better.

She goes to him if she ever needs advice on people’s problems.

And of course that panel with the transparent bubble.

So in her imagination, Loid is trying to tell her that’s not normal - but “he” is fake. Both of them maintain a false sense of normality by becoming a fake family. Didn’t she marry him so she can continue to work as an assassin?

Loid has been her go-to when it comes to “normality”, but he fails this time. Because it is not normal to have a perfect husband. He becomes part of her abnormality. They then started to fight.

At last, Anya appears and interrupts her imagination. 

Anya wants to keep the family together. She’ll do anything, including eating sweet omelettes. That’s when Yor gives up and runs back. It goes back to why she becomes an assassin. 

Chapter 79 echoes with Chapter 53, but in a totally different way. She likes to be an assassin. She finds purpose in it. But what if her job, or her need to act normal in order to keep her job, goes against her “purpose”?

The Shopkeeper and “Loid” both speak artfully - Yor doesn’t necessarily understand all of their intentions, but she does admire their words. They represent the two different kinds of “normality” she’s had. But these two versions of normality can easily be challenged - because “killing ish wrong”, and the perfect husband is fake.

It’s Anya who speaks to her. Yor fully understands Anya’s intentions. Yor kills because she wants to preserve something precious for her. She killed to keep her family together, and in Chapter 79, she stops killing because Anya pleads with her - Anya wants to keep the family together.

I’ve always thought Yor saw herself in Anya, and Chapter 79 kinda confirms that.

When did Yor want to be “more of a mother to” Anya? After the school interview. Anya said she wants to be with her papa and mama forever.

Yor could empathise with Anya more than anyone. After all, Yor did become an assassin to keep her family together. She got married and pretended to be normal because she didn’t want to worry Yuri. She did it for her family. And we can all see how hard Anya tries just to do the exact same thing.

And of course, now Anya’s family is becoming her family. She truly cares about Loid,

Just as Loid is starting to truly care about her.

Of course in her very drunken state she still thinks she’s doing it to “be normal”. But this is no longer an act for their colleagues or neighbours. If it’s not really for others, what or who is it for to “act like a normal couple”? Why do Loid and Yor still insist on becoming the lovey-dovey/perfect spouse for each other, especially when they now very consciously know “normal” relationships are imperfect and chaotic?

Just kiss already.

But really, he doesn't have to do all these, it's not really necessary for his mission. He doesn't have to act like a good husband to Yor in private, like there's no one to show, their neighbors aren't around to nitpick every little thing he'll do, and Yor wouldn't complain if he do the bare minimum because she's fully aware that their marriage is fake. As for him being a good father, he has to act like a good father in front Yor so she doesn't suspect that he and anya aren't really blood related father and daughter, so I get that part, but his relationship with Yor, I understand that he has to act as a good citizen around her so she won't suspect a thing, but he can just do the bare minimum as her husband since they're not a real couple and they're not really married. At this point, I'm convinced that he's doing all of these because he genuinely enjoys it and he wants Yor and Anya to have an easy life and be happy while using the excuse that it's necessary for the mission.

I really hope this doesn't come off as hate, I just wanted someone else's input - I feel like the eden kids have become more of the main characters than the forgers have. I know we just finished an important arc with them but it feels as though every other chapter is centered around them. We haven't had a chapter with the forgers together since Anya got rescued and that wasn't even a whole chapter. it feels as though the manga's shifted from its core (a spy dad, assassin mom, esper child and a dog that can see the future). I guess this could just be because of the update schedule though making everything feel slow paced and some plotlines random at times. Again, I hope this doesn't come off as hate. I still love and enjoy the story, and was curious to hear the opinion of another.

Your feelings and frustration are totally valid. A lot of us got into Spy x family because of the Forgers (and some of us Twiyor specifically) and miss seeing them. So, let me tell you how I see things both as a writer and as a reader.

As a writer: I'm not worried about where sxf is going because I've written plenty of stories and I can see the seams (meaning the construction of the story). However, I know not everyone is a writer, so this illustration may be useful for everyone:

The beginning of sxf had a great exposition of the characters and the story. This is the part where the readers fall in love and get attached to the characters.

I know it's been going for 79 chapters, but in my opinion, we're barely leaving #2 (conflict) and entering #3 (rising action). Endo set the conflict and not quite started the action yet. So we're just entering the middle of the story.

In my experience (both as a reader and writer), when the middle of the story begins is not the most exciting part and, depending on the story and author, the middle can feel long.

In Spanish, the middle a story is called "nudo", which means "knot". This is where the story gets tangled and very complicated. In fact, the more complicated, the better, because it means that it'll be hard to resolve and the stakes will be high during the climax.

The purpose of the middle of a story is to point towards the climax. This is where the author has to build the tension to get there, where the conflict gets thicker and thicker.

Now, has Endo been doing this?

YES.

Evidence of this are the whole bus kidnapping arc: where he told us how the SSS and government behave towards its citizens (even when they're children). THIS will be key in the story. And the latest 78 doggie competition chapter: where Handler and Twilight literally talk about the main plot of the story.

This reminds us the main plot is still about Donovan Desmond and Project Apple. This doesn't seem random to me. And the fact that we've gotten so much Eden makes me think that Eden is key in the main plot too.

As a writer, his job is to point out to the main plot and head to the climax. If he's been doing that with Eden chapters, that means that's where we're going.

The way I see it, Twilight, Yor, and Anya (Spy, Assassin and Esper) are the main characters, but not the only characters. Because of its cuteness and wholesomeness, it's easy to think of Spy x Family is a simple story about a Spy who adopts a little girl and falls in love with an assassin.

It is not.

This is a monster of a story.

Think of it as a big tree. Stories like this have many branches (secondary characters and side stories) that are connected to the main plot and serve to lead the plot towards the climax. Examples: Lord of the Rings, Fruits Basket, Attack on Titan.

My point is that in these Monster Stories, the plot may not always focus on the main characters, but in the end, everything, every little branch and side story came together to let the main characters rule the story and get to that explosive climax.

And I believe that's what Endo is doing here.

Is it the most exciting thing in the world right now? No.

Sometimes development can feel like a total drag; especially if chapters come out every two weeks and we're all eager for more.

As a writer, I recommend patience. We'll get there, it's just going to take some time.

Now...

As a reader (and a fan): *Big sigh* Yes, I miss the Forgers (and Twiyor) so much and every time there's a new chapter I feel sad we didn't get any interaction.

Yes, I want to see the romance, the pinning, the angst, the first kiss. ALL of it!! At least give me the Forgers shenanigans...

But there is no point in getting upset about it.

Yes, we're kind of in a dry spot in the story, but personally I'm still enjoying it. I'm so grateful for all the good friends I've made thanks to Spy x family. On top of it, I've been having tons of fun writing fics analyzing, and discussing things with other fans.

There's so much talent in our fandom and during this dry season, it's the fans with their gorgeous fanarts and awesome stories what is keeping the fandom engaged and happy. There's no need to feel bored while we wait for the Forgers to come back (and Twiyor to kiss!), let's wait together. Let's have fun together!

One last thing worth mentioning...

I've said it before. It's okay to take a break. There is absolutely no hate in this advice: If the story is becoming too frustrating, if it's detrimental for mental health, if it's becoming more of a bother than a source of happiness, it's okay to take some time off. It's okay to get into other things, other stories and other fandoms. And it's okay to come back after a while to check up on any progress and it's okay to move on too.

My thoughts on Spy x Family Chapter 79

So, as I've been more active on the SXF fandom and specially here on Tumblr, I thought I could make a short (spoiler: it was everything but short) post of every new chapter coming out. It's not really an in depth analysis, rather a personal view on the chapter as someone who is amazed by this manga and everything related to it, so let's go.

Quick disclaimer, before we start. I'm doing this in English, as I believe it's easier to reach out to others (rather than in Portuguese, my mother language), so, if you encounter some grammar or spelling mistakes, it's probably due to me being a bilingual mess, sorry about that.

I absolutely loved the fact that it was Sharon who noticed about Yor being more communicative with them (and it was her the one doing a lot of other things I will be mentioning here later) which really surprised me. It's really fun to see how the relationship of Yor and her colleagues are improving (and considering chapter 1 and 2, that was a hell of an improvement, specially Camilla).

Okay, I relate to Yor a lot. Mainly because I recognize someone with low self-esteem when I see it. And the fact that she believes it's a bother to be more communicative with others and apologized has got me, but I'm glad Sharon said what I was thinking (girl, you are a precious baby, why a bother?). It's also nice to see Sharon worrying about Anya.

This part is absolutely awesome. Sharon asking if Yor was coming with them, leaving Millie and Camilla surprised. It was definitely a first, as Millie said, so it got me even sadder when I realized that Yor was not at all expected to be invited, which makes me believe it's something that has happened before. And it happened a lot, her being left out by her colleagues. Totally breaks my heart (cause I believe Yor is a peanut and deserve to be protected, if you haven't noticed it yet), so I'm really glad to see some improvement.

I love the fact that she worries about calling Loid. Specially because she doesn't need to pretend for him, okay, sure, she wants to appear normal, to not be seen as an assassin, but with Loid her guard is getting down and down, which is very good (ship wise). I truly believe that her calling him wasn't for the looks, but due to her actually worrying about him or Anya waiting for her to have dinner. It's really cute.

She is so adorable, what the actual heck? Okay, moving on.

Someone pointed this out (I don't know who, I'm really sorry) about their drink glasses. While Yor has a quite small cocktail-ish glass, Millie, Sharon, and Camilla have big beer cups, which, again, is a detail. However, I absolutely love Endo's sense of detailing on this manga, to show Yor's weak for booze in subtle ways.

Yor immediately blushing after Camilla simply asks if her and Loid are getting along is pure gold. I truly believe it is not solely her drunk blushing (since it goes all over her face and chest sometimes, while on this she is blushing only on her cheeks). Then, Millie realizing it, puts more fire on it (poor Yor, yet go Millie, at least this time).

And Yor coming up with something that I value her for thinking about, which is a child perception of intimacy in her home, is awesome.

It's cute how she thinks that about Loid, it's actually quite cute. Something NOT CUTE is Camilla and Millie still thinking crap about Yor's marriage. Specifically Millie, she wants to tell Yor to dump her hubby, why tho? Is everyone in freaking Berlint wanting Loid? (can I judge them? Yes! But also no!). Girly Yor, I'm ready to be jealous and defensive for you.

Yes, Yor, he is absolutely perfect, he does everything. Can we, please, talk about the "why don't you take a hot bath?" part? No? Overreacting much? Okay.

Please, Yor, no one believes you hate everything about Roid. Opsie, Loid. It's pretty much the opposite, actually. Who are you trying to fool, girl?

I believe this bit is self-explanatory. I laughed so much my tummy hurt. No much else to say here. The incoherency of Yor's drunk mind had me rolling.

LOOK. AT. THAT. MAN! Woof. Is this how Loid is 24/7 on Yor's head? Cause, girl, I'm worried about you. Truly. Other than that, can we please talk about how comic is her with that knife? How non-threatening it looks? (I mean, kinda, look at those eyes).

No comment, they are being so nice here. I'm surprised by Millie, mostly. They can be good friends, it just takes a while and more intimacy to be built around them, I believe, hope I'm not wrong.

Poor Yor, not even a welcome home kiss? That's a valid statement, Sharon. You rock! Sharon is the number 1 twiyor fan and nothing can change my mind about it.

Her mind is so fried. Again, poor Yor!

Too many things happening here! First, Yor's colleagues recognizing she is actually fun to be around and probably Sharon suggesting that they should invite her out again some time. I'm truly happy about the end of this chapter, her co-workers wise, because It's such a big improvement. Yor would not communicate with them, and they would be so bitter with her (specially Millie and Camilla). Look how far we've got! That's some major improvement and I'm proud.

Now, to the most important thing ever of this chapter, the kiss attempt! Okay, a little before that, when Loid asked if she had a good time. Am I overreacting to the bare minimum, or there is something else about him? He is so adorable and such a great husband (for the mission). Look at that confused little face.

I bet all the 25 cents I have that Endo was cracking up drawing this face. I laughed way more than I should, oh, poor Yor

It's been 79 chapters, my folks, and we got a tiny bit of happiness. They are so adorable! Look at them? Kiss NOW. One thing I noticed is how big Loid is compared to Yor, look at his body, at that hand size difference. That's… Quite nice, it's all I'm going to say about it. (Is it hot in here? No? Okay).

The second bar is up and rising!

Even though Yor has a tremendous high tolerance to pain, I would not be surprised If she woke up to a big bulge in her head in the morning. And worse, probably she won't even remember a thing, which takes us to the scale zero again. Damn it, it's hard to see these two idiots realizing they are so in love for each other. However, this chapter was all my heart needed. We begged for twiyor, Endo laughed at us and prolonged our suffering. I want more of that, sir, if you don't mind.

My hope is Anya bringing up this on the breakfast morning. That would be quite interesting.
