I think a good portion of the fandom set themselves up to hate fjorester when the show was airing in two distinct ways.

Most people did not view jester as an actual character and instead viewed her as a vehicle to progress other characters stories and a prize to prove that "my favorite is the best actually"

Most people did not engage with fjords story at all. They saw him only as his flaws and it's one of the few examples I can think of where a male character got the unfair treatment normally reserved for women in fandom.

It's very clear when people talk about fjorester and the slow build of their relationship whether everyone understood them as characters or not.

Jester would not have been ready to get with fjord earlier than Aeor because she was dealing with a lot. Why would you want a romantic declaration to interrupt a story centered on Jester herself and her dynamic with Artie? There's also the fact that it's clear she was figuring herself out beyond romantic entaglements and it wouldn't have been fair to her as a character to saddle her in one when she was still getting to the end.

Then you have fjord, who was not ready to take the step. Who similarly was growing and learning, wanting to do better. He needed time to acknowledge his faults and overcome them. Beyond the fact that post Avantika I legitimately believe fjord and jester had to go from square 1 and rebuild a friendship, fjord had never had any proper romantic experience. People don't talk about be fact that both he and Jester were on very similar footing when it came to figuring out romance.

To throw romance in before it was time would be to do a disservice to fjord and jester as characters. They got to discover themselves as people and that's so much more important.
