How to clean cutting boards and butcher block counters
A friend on discord said they'd appreciate a cutting board care tutorial so here it is!
Note 1: sometimes wooden counters are treated or sealed. You can still clean them like this but the oils and wax will not absorb into sealed wood.
Note 2: when working with wood, always go with the grain. Follow the lines of the wood when cleaning, oiling, waxing or anything else.
Note 3: this is a messy process that takes hours. I usually do it in my underwear to keep from getting oil on my clothes.
First Step: Clean!
You can use dish soap and hot water on a cutting board but doing it super often can dry them out and cause cracking. I pretty much only use soap if I cut raw meat or something super sticky that won't rinse off.
For countertops I use distilled white vinegar and scrub it with a rag. This won't get the stains out but if I wanted stainless countertops I wouldn't have one made of wood.
Tumblr media
This little cart thing is from Ikea and is like a portable kitchen island or countertop. It's raw wood and I use it to cook so it's got all kinds of food stains, even though I wipe it down regularly. I've already cleaned it with vinegar in these photos, but it's been a few months since I've oiled and waxed it. You can see how pale and dry the wood is.
Second Step: Oil!
You want to use mineral oil. It is odorless, flavorless, very unlikely to cause allergic reactions, and cheap. Don't buy cutting board oil. It's just overpriced mineral oil. Don't use a food oil like coconut or flax or almond. They will eventually go rancid and make your cutting board smell rancid. Buy your mineral oil at the drugstore from the laxatives section.
Tumblr media
Drizzle that shit on your wood. Be sparing to start as you can always add more.
Tumblr media
Rub it in with your hands. You want the wood evenly soaked with oil. Rub it into the whole surface and into the sides as well. If you're doing this to a cutting board, make sure to get every side and edge.
Bare hands work best and the oil will leave your hands so soft. If you use a rag (not recommended!) please be aware that oily rags can spontaneously combust and dispose of them carefully.
Tumblr media
I love how the color changes to a richer darker brown as the wood absorbs the oil.
Tumblr media
Once you have a nice thick coat of oil on your board, let it hang out for an hour or so to absorb as much of it as it can. If any spots look dry, add more oil. (I admit I skipped the wait this time.)
Step 3: Wax!
Cutting board conditioner is so expensive but really it's just a mix of mineral oil and wax, sometimes with some kind of fragrance added. You can make your own at home for way cheaper, either in the microwave if you're making a small batch or in a double boiler if you wanna make a big batch. You can find a ton of tutorials online for this by searching for "cutting board conditioner recipe" but basically you just melt the wax (beeswax is the best IMO) and mix in some mineral oil. The ratio of wax:oil is a preference thing. I like around 1:3, my sister uses 1:5, I saw someone online who prefers 1:8. Find your own ideal.
Tumblr media
I also use mine as lip balm and cuticle cream.
But however you acquire the stuff, it's time to smear it all over your over your cutting board, just like you did the oil. If you're using a softer blend than mine, you will likely need to wipe up any excess oil before waxing.
Tumblr media
Rub it in until you have a smooth even coat.
Tumblr media
Let it hang out and absorb for another hour or two. I waited about 90 minutes this time. Then wipe off any excess wax with paper towels until the surface is no longer tacky.
Tumblr media
Your board or counter is now ready to use again!

You can’t tell me that Ryunosuke was mentally okay after having to spend nearly two months in the room where his best friend died after desperately having to prove that he wasn’t the one who did it. He felt like he had to pick up his dead friends dreams and belongings because it would be suck a waste for them to be abandoned. He took on a whole career that he explicitly stated terrified him because he couldn’t stand letting Kazuma or Susato down.
Anyway there’s some psychological horror to being trapped in the room where someone you loved died just feet away from where you were sleeping for weeks and weeks with the only thing to occupy your mind being relentlessly studying to replace him.
The only picture he had of Kazuma was the crime scene photo staged to look like he was implicating him for the crime and he wouldn’t be able to just throw it away.
You just cannot tell me this guy didn’t suffer some amount of psychological distress and constant nightmares on the way to Great Britain.

Shen Jiu should make dark jokes about his time as a slave but no one gets the jokes coz everyone thinks he is a spoilt young lord from a noble family.
(Except, Yue Qingyuan. He gets it. He is currently screaming, wailing inside coz sometimes SJ is a bit too detailed JUST to make him feel even MORE guilty.)

Theory that solves(?) "founding of Hyrule" timeline inconsistencies:
Origin of Hyrule no. 1: Skyward Sword. Zelda, Link, and the Skylians settle the surface world at the game's conclusion. Notably, their dress looks nothing like the Zonai era.
Tumblr media
Origin of Hyrule no. 2: Tears of the Kingdom. Rauru and Sonia are the king and queen who founded Hyrule. Notably, Zonai mechanisms and architecture greatly resemble the pre-Skyward-Sword-era Lanayru mining tech and symbolism, though Skyward Sword's art direction is more cartoony than TotK, so that has to be taken into account.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's where it gets cyclical. If TotK's forgotten era came first, then:
Zonai influence should be ALL OVER Skyloft
The Gerudo should not exist, because they're (implied to be) descended from Groose, a Skylian; at the very least, there should have been a whole Gerudo culture in the Sky
Where did the Secret Stones go?
We should have seen Zeldra flying around in the sky, let alone Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra
But if Skyward Sword came before all things Zonai, then:
The Lanayru Mining Facility (assuming it to be Zonai in origin) should not exist
Hyrule should have already been founded by Rauru's time
Of the two, Skyward Sword being first on the wild surface makes more sense. But if that's the case, there are even more questions:
Where did the Secret Stones come from? Are we to believe that Hylia gave them to the Zonai, since the Golden Trio have already left the Triforce and departed?
What about the Zonai themselves? They supposedly descended from the heavens. Were they just up so high that the Skylians couldn't find them? Did Hylia cleave the ground twice? Did they spontaneously appear up there like mice in grain bins?
Why is there a whole Temple of Time with bells that Rauru, one of two of the LAST of his species, woke up and went to sleep to? In fact, why is there an entire kingdom's worth of structures already built before the Sky Reckoning?
My solution:
The Zonai did exist pre-Skyward Sword, and did descend down from the sky ages ago. They built the Lanayru Mining Facility, utilizing the power of Timeshift Stones in their work. This is not Rauru and Mineru's era.
The Zonai are among the people that stay behind to fight Demise alongside Hylia, while the Skylians were sent up to Skyloft. The people of the Surface are entrusted with the Secret Stones as weapons against Demise, with the caveat that they keep them hidden. That's why they're called Secret Stones despite being well-known to Ganondorf in TotK, it was PARAMOUNT that Demise not know he could get any stronger.
The war ends. Just about every civilization is obliterated by it. The Zonai retreat as far from Demise's seal as they can to lick their wounds. They take the sages' Secret Stones with them, so as to not be caught unawares and lose them to Demise when he eventually reemerges.
Skyward Sword.
The evil is defeated, the Skylians come down to the Surface. That's the signal that it's safe to return now. Shortly after the Skylians officially start to settle, the Zonai, who know how things work, help them build a proper civilization.
Time passes. The Surface is officially a bunch of scattered clans with varying degrees of territory. People are content, though nothing is particularly efficient. The Skylians take on Zonai fashion and building styles as generations pass. The Zonai themselves dwindle.
Rauru, married to the leader of the Hylians, looks to unite the scattered clans under one banner in the name of prosperity and shared resources, idolizing the pre-Skyward era where the gods walked the land. He and Sonia officially name the place Hyrule, and any clan that signs treaty with them is considered within its borders. Mineru, meanwhile, has made her first construct models based on the Lanayru Mine Robots of old, which add to the appeal of joining Hyrule as its subkingdom territories.
Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda's first 12 memories.
Between the Master Sword going back in time and Zeldra's ascent, Zelda and Mineru get to work with as many constructs as possible to protect the Sky Isles they plan to send upwards. They need a TON of Zonaite, and recycling is a priority, leading to the gachapon machines.
Zelda knows enough about her kingdom that she knows where the land is particularly rich is where the people of her time settled, and Zonaite is shown to enrich soil greatly. This is why all the old Zonaite mines are underneath the towns in modern Hyrule, despite changing geography through other eras, and Tarrey Town's new-ness.
Zelda ascends.
The secretive Sheikah clan, having seen the Blood Moon's rise when the Demon King took power, realize that Demise isn't, in fact, all gone. They decide this means that their job serving Hylia isn't truly done, and return to help the fledgling kingdom as best they can. They bring the knowledge of the Master Sword of Skyward Sword days with them.
Ganondorf first shakes the seal he's under without form, leading to the first Calamity and the initial rise of Calamity Ganon. This is 10k years before BotW. This is also the first documented use of the Master Sword to seal the Demon King away, recorded in the tapestry.
The Sheikah are forced to abandon their technology. The Yiga/Sheikah split happens.
Literally all the rest of Hyrulean History happens after this.
Breath of the Wild.
Tears of the Kingdom.

fsa is placed at the end of the four swords subseries timeline and as such ganon canonically never breaks out of the seal of the four sword despite him being able to break out of seals in multiple other games. i like to think that the reason for this is because the four sword just straight up ate him over a long period of time. like from inside the seal

saw a post about how people want will solace to have a gun because they don’t recognize the value of his healing powers which can be true but also
the whole thing in pjo is that for demigods fighting = autonomy and independence (which is why percy screams at the begging IT SUCKS TO BE A DEMIGOD) the idea is that the camp makes demigods safe (by teaching them how to fight) and any other type of labour isn’t that much valuable because they > don’t teach them that it is < / > they don’t live enough to need them <
The Harpies are the ones cleaning instead of themselves, the Ambrosia will heal instead of actual doctors (which puts a hell of pressure on Will when the ambrosia is not enough because he needs to treat those who are severely injured AND the light injured who already took way too much Ambrosia)
And I don’t think this was on purpose RR was just like “oh shit someone and something needs to do this boring stuff”
I think the camp should have an equilibrium going on like teach those kids valuable life skills (what is safe to eat in a forest how do I cook make themselves clean the dishes how do I treat an injurie without ambrosia ((this one for wills sake too)) how do I guide myself without a gps) and also what kind of fighting suits you because yeah in a world where monsters want to kick your ass you need to know how to defend yourself not because this is what makes you valuable but because it what makes you SURVIVE

Fanfic prompt: the blood moon rises but unfortunately shadow and the chain miss each other by a day
So he gets left behind in Wild's Hyrule gets in a fight with a hinox
And the Yiga hear of a massive explosion in a forest and immediately go there in case the hero is there
But instead they find a toddler who has absolutely no trouble with massacring the hinox population (because the blood moon brings back monsters stronger and that would apply to shadow)
The Yiga soldier decides that he will be smart that one time and retreats to tell his master about the situation
And kohga gets interested because another hero has appeared
From nowhere and he is all by himself with the other heroes missing
Then he decides to make a grand entrance
But then regrets it because that darkness coming off the kid
Is a sort of darkness he has only experienced once before
The day he encountered the calamity In all its glory
With the calamity gone nothing should have such powers anymore
Whoever that child was he was the closest thing to the calamity in decades (blood moon aside)
So the entire Yiga clan immediately starts warshipping shadow and invite him to their humble hideout
And shadow decides that they are definitely evil but also if Vio managed to play the role of a villain then he could do it even better
And makes it his mission to be the best overlord they could have ever had and give those weirdos a redemption arc
But quickly sidetrackes when he finds out that he is at full power
The Yiga see their new lord pull out a bomb and bomb an entire crater in the desert
When he shapeshiftes into a perfect replica of kohga and crawls up a wall with shadow power
They quickly learn that he very well could be the next calamity
They then at some point awkwardly ask him where he got such power
When he told them that he is ganon's secret love child
They don’t even doubt it and change their suits to purple
The races of Hyrule main while are in genuine fear because the Gerudo heard a massive explosion in the Yiga's hideout
The Yiga stopped eating bananas and began Making evil root beer (?)
And the hinox population has moved to the desert
And they are wearing purple
So obviously the world is ending
When the chain appears back they hear that the calamity returned from the dead and is causing massive destruction but most importantly the chain sees the entire world think that the world is ending
Just because the Yiga stopped eating bananas
And arm themselves for the apocalypse and the potential end of the world
Because what did dink do to make the Yiga willing to drop their addiction
When it turns out to be shadow four was ready to hit him for the stunt
