@dcviated asked:
I was gonna send an IC ask but I keep imagining Honey as the protagonist of one of those 'run a store to get out of debt' games. How do you think she would prioritize (or, did, I guess) upgrading and expanding the business? Did she have any band-aids (so to speak) while waiting for other things to come together?
I'm playing in this mental playplace with you and I gotta say, I would KILL to play this game; she feels like a very natural fit for that protagonist role, especially considering her narrative typically shifts directly from 'finishing up magic school' (or something to the same effect) and moving straight into starting her business. Typically, I'm charitable enough to assume she doesn't have student debt or other similar some-such to worry about, but it would be a cute narrative to explore... mmm.... well, let's get into the meat of the question:
If Honey had started from a less-than-advantageous position and didn't have the savings/means to go from zero to her idealized vision of Charmed Confections from the start, the first thing she'd set her mind to figuring out is consistent, high-quality supply sources she could form good business relationships with.
Playing the market and probing all of the options in that respect is something which takes a surprising amount of time; as much as possible, she'd probably try to sort stuff like this out before she opens her doors, but with payments due and pressure mounting, things can only be delayed so long. Until a better wholesale arrangement can be made, she's probably just making supply trips herself and buying in smaller quantity—more micro-manage-y than she'd care to be, but it's not the end of the world in the short term given that she's not exactly cranking out the volume of goods she aspires to, from the start.
That's probably one of the hardest things for her to curb, at first, despite knowing the necessity of it: given as she is to flights of fancy, Honey wants to make good on every blessed thought which crosses her mind, every experimental treat and obscure, foreign pastry or candy; but filling a shoppe with a visual assault of outlandish options is a sure way to run into the red fast.
So she starts with staples, the more familiar things, albeit with a bit of a twist or general personal touch: pain au chocolat, but also some with a honey-pistachio filling, soft caramels with pink himalayan salt or maybe a hint of cayenne, etc. etc. The pre-made options start simple, select, with a more pronounced emphasis on by-request/custom orders as she's getting her footing. This means not keeping more expensive or niche ingredients on hand and letting anything go to waste, purchasing specialty materials (and perhaps equipment) only when a custom order invites it and ensures the cost will be covered, in kind.
To that end, she also dedicates a lot of her initial focus to good ol'-fashioned marketing. Doesn't have the spare bones to commission much, so it's all self-designed, printed, and distributed, but that's hardly a detriment in her case—she's probably not even fully settled in to her new neighborhood before she starts showing up at food fairs, wedding expos, craft markets and other some-such with a table, a booth, some fine samples of her sweets and a portfolio of the fancier sugar-sculptures, cakes, and other specialty orders she's made (or mocked up) in the past. Always! Stay! Plugging!
For someone whose philosophy centers around a life of luxury, hedonism, and well-cultivated laziness: she works herself like a dog in that opening season. The 'band-aids' employed to keep her growth, aesthetic, and vision on track while she was still working to make connections and establish her customer base, waiting for commerce to really start flowing—quite simply: it was to do everything she possibly could, herself.
All the signage and decorations? Made by hand. The same delicately manicured hands which begrudgingly committed themselves to building some of her own custom display stands, custom bits of furniture. Many a tear to be shed, many a furrowed brow while trying to spacial-reason her way through the process, but precision measuring is one of her strongpoints, and while she won't soon be trading her preferred fabrication tools of spatulas and candy maker's shears for power tools full-time, she makes do, and does better than expected.
Presentation and environment are important. You can have some of the most delicious goodies in the world in stock, but it won't matter if nobody notices your existence in the first place—people have to want to come in through your door and spend time inside. In that respect, I think one of the first 'upgrades'/'expansions' she'd prioritize is making room for a small seating area, a bar, stationed within view of the front windows; so people not only have a place to sit and immediately enjoy their treat, (basking in the scents and ogling more potential prizes to take home), but also so they can be seen by passers-by. There's no promotion more powerful than seeing someone else enjoying themselves (aka, y'know, FOMO).
From the very beginning I think she also tries to situate herself either in a stand-alone building with lot space to expand into, or (depending on setting) a sort of strip-mall/street with an additional empty storefront beside it, hoping to work her way up to enough profit in time to buy out that additional space as well.

Watched the FOP Christmas episodes and it gave me thoughts about elves. And Sammy. Might also talk about Goldie headcanons I have because the spellmentary kids, while underutilized, are fun to think about.
So here's my incredibly elaborate Sammy Headcanons! (Dedicated to @wreckrinho because u are the Sammy sweetsparkle guy to me.)
First and foremost, I like to think that this elf named Jeff from The Temp (Oh Yeah Shorts) is Sammy's dad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that in mind, I just want to clarify first that Sammy is 100% an elf and nothing else as far as I can tell. Some elves just seem to naturally have wings for some reason, even though they don't fly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minus the one scene in School of Crock that I remember where Sammy does fly. But I'm willing to brush it off considering flying isn't something that he actually does often.
Tumblr media
I personally am not a fan of a good portion of season 10, but if I have to use it to make a point, than I will. Between the different types of elves there are in this show, there's no way he's a forest elf considering the only notable forest elves look like this. (From the episode Spring Break-Up, season 10, episode 21.)
Tumblr media
I like to think Sammy's one of Santa's Elves and becomes a toymaker/sweetmaker in the future. (Taking my Headcanon of who his dad is into account, Jeff hates working for Santa and Sammy does too.)

Bengali Sandesh: A Sweet Story of Tradition and Taste
Bengali Sandesh (or "Sondesh") is not just a dessert—it’s a piece of history, a culinary tradition, and a symbol of Bengali culture. Made from simple ingredients, this delicacy captures the hearts of food lovers with its rich, melt-in-the-mouth texture and delicate sweetness. Today, let’s explore what makes Sandesh so special, how it’s prepared, and the unique flavors that keep people coming back for more.
A Little History of Sandesh
The origin of Sandesh can be traced back to 18th-century Bengal, where it began as a simple sweet made from sugar and chhena (fresh cottage cheese). This was a time when sugar was newly introduced in the region, and Bengali sweetmakers eagerly experimented with it. Over the years, the art of making Sandesh evolved, with many variations emerging to cater to diverse tastes and festive occasions.
In the early days, the dessert had a relatively simple form, but as Bengali confectioners became more skilled, they began crafting elaborate designs, flavors, and presentations. Sandesh soon became a symbol of celebration, often enjoyed during festivals, weddings, and religious ceremonies. Even today, it remains an integral part of Bengali culture, a treat you’ll find at sweet shops, family gatherings, and celebrations across Bengal.
The Art of Making Sandesh
Making Sandesh is truly an art, as it requires precision, patience, and the finest quality ingredients. The base of Sandesh is chhena, the fresh cheese made by curdling milk with a bit of lime juice or vinegar. Unlike paneer, chhena is softer, which gives Sandesh its smooth, creamy texture.
Here’s a brief outline of how Sandesh is traditionally prepared:
Preparing the Chhena: Full-fat milk is boiled and curdled with lemon juice or vinegar. Once the whey is drained, what remains is soft, crumbly chhena, perfect for Sandesh.
Mixing with Sugar: The chhena is kneaded to a smooth consistency, then combined with sugar or jaggery for sweetness. This mixture is gently cooked on low heat, being stirred continuously to achieve the right texture—soft, smooth, and slightly grainy.
Shaping and Garnishing: After cooking, the Sandesh mixture is molded into different shapes—rounds, squares, or creative floral designs. Traditional molds may also be used, giving Sandesh beautiful embossed patterns. Many variations are garnished with slivers of pistachio, almond, saffron, or a touch of cardamom powder.
Tumblr media
Types and Flavors of Sandesh
Sandesh comes in an array of flavors, and Bengali sweetmakers have a knack for experimenting with both traditional and contemporary twists. Some popular varieties include:
Plain Sandesh: This is the simplest form, with pure chhena and sugar as the main ingredients.
Kacha Golla Sandesh: Soft and crumbly, this type is made without cooking the chhena extensively, keeping it light and fresh.
Gur (Jaggery) Sandesh: A winter specialty, this Sandesh uses date palm jaggery, or "nolen gur," which gives it a unique caramel-like flavor and beautiful golden color.
Chocolate Sandesh: A modern twist on the classic, this version incorporates cocoa powder or melted chocolate for a fusion treat.
Bhapa Sandesh: This steamed version is slightly firmer and often flavored with cardamom or saffron, resulting in a delightful, melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Fruit-flavored Sandesh: Some variations feature fruit purees like mango or pineapple, giving the Sandesh a light, fruity taste.
Nutritional Benefits of Sandesh
Though Sandesh is a dessert, it offers some nutritional benefits too. Chhena, being a good source of protein, calcium, and essential amino acids, makes Sandesh a somewhat healthier dessert option compared to others. The dessert is generally lower in fat and sugar, particularly when traditional sweeteners like jaggery are used. The addition of nuts like pistachios and almonds further enhances its nutritional profile, providing healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Sandesh in Festivals and Celebrations
In Bengal, Sandesh is a must-have during festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and weddings. It’s also common to see Sandesh gifted as a token of love, respect, and celebration. Many families in Bengal have their own treasured Sandesh recipes passed down through generations, adding a touch of nostalgia and heritage to each bite.
How to Enjoy Sandesh
If you’re new to Sandesh, try starting with a plain or jaggery variety to get a taste of its authentic flavors. Pair it with a cup of tea or coffee for a classic experience, or try it with a glass of lassi or sweetened yogurt for a refreshing combination.
For those with a culinary interest, making Sandesh at home can be a rewarding experience, as it allows you to experiment with flavors, fillings, and garnishes. Whether you choose a simple plain version or a more complex flavored one, you’ll experience the joy of crafting a Bengali sweet that’s been cherished for centuries.
The Lasting Charm of Sandesh
With its rich history, versatile flavors, and delicate sweetness, Sandesh is more than just a dessert; it’s a cultural icon that continues to hold a special place in Bengali hearts. Each bite offers a blend of tradition, art, and the distinct taste of Bengal’s culinary heritage.
So, the next time you come across this delightful sweet, remember that Sandesh is not just a treat but a testament to the rich history and love of sweets that Bengali culture celebrates.

( inspired by this post, if i were a betting man )
@dcviated / Diluc said:
"There are however, some things about Mondstadt... that I hope never change." That's a loaded glance Diluc is casually passing over at you, Honey.
She rather likes a lot about this land: from the generally jovial mood of its people and the at-times sleepy pace of life, centered around simple trades and shared celebrations; to the wind which sweeps down from the mountains to caress the valley, carrying dandelion seeds and whispers of songs from afar.
That doesn't mean she struggles to listen to his counterpoints and criticism of his homeland; rather the opposite, the sweetmaker lends her ear eagerly as Mr. Ragnvindr reminisces on how the nation, and the city itself—rising in fachwerk facades around them on any given side, pale bricks and dark, saturated timber—have changed over the years, and levies some stern words against those things which he saw needed more adjustment... it is proof, in its way, that he cares very deeply for his homeland, on some level—that he should expect better from it, and its people.
As he goes on, her gaze wanders from him to the sights around, taking inventory of the windmills which turned, stirred by the warm summer breeze, and the merchants who milled about the lower quarter of the city, going about their daily business; occasionally flitting down to a little sketchbook she has under one hand, taking inspiration from their surroundings, and their conversation, to scheme some new showpiece for the store window.
It's in one such moment where he quiets, then makes his contrary remark, and the meaningful pause which comes after draws her attention back up to look at him before long—obligingly curious, at first, to seek his meaning.
Tumblr media
Only, of course, to find that meaning laid out quite clearly in his gaze.
Loaded, indeed; with quite enough force to see an uncharacteristically nervous laugh bubble over candy lips, and a flushed color claim the tips of pointed ears... but she's only shy for half a beat, before her expression slips somewhere gentler, soft cheeks rising to make crescents of lavender eyes—taking him in, in turn.
❝ ...yeah. Me too. ❞

This has been on my December TBR since November, so I really wanted to get it finished. I knew that would be difficult to do in my current state so I just bought the audiobook. Review: The Miraculous Sweetmakers: The Frost Fair by Natasha Hastings and Alex T. Smith
Tumblr media
I am delighted to be a part of The WriteReads blog tour for this heartbreaking, magical winter adventure that I know will capture so many of your hearts.
In 1683, the Great Frost swept through the streets of London, freezing the River Thames solid. Thomasina’s family have been selling sweets for generations while her friend Anne works at a new apothecary in town. Rumours of a magical Frost Fair appearing at night sweep through the city and strange, grey-skinned people seem to be showing up. Thomasina and her family are still mourning the death of Thomasina’s twin brother Arthur four years before and Thomasina would do anything to bring him back. Could the new wave of magic and wishes that the Great Frost has brought be the key to restoring happiness to the Burgess family or is serious danger afoot?
Tumblr media
Thomasina still hears Arthur’s voice and talks to him all the time. She feels a huge amount of guilt about his death and it was heartbreaking to watch her really take the blame for it. However, Arthur’s presence is always there and it’s clear that he never really left her or her family’s home and hearts.
Tumblr media
There are some delicious descriptions of sweets and food in the book that really bring the world to life. I loved entering the sweet shop and the apothecary as my nose was filled with the most wonderful scents. Even the cheese pie that Thomasina makes later on in the book seemed so delicious and made me incredibly hungry. This is certainly writing that touches all five of your senses!
Tumblr media
I loved some of the physical descriptions that Thomasina gave, particularly of the shady Dr Silsworth. The fact that he resembles a ‘mouldy apple’ felt so authentic to how a child would describe an unsavoury character’s appearance and I couldn’t help but laugh because I somehow knew exactly what he looked like. It’s a little bit Roald Dahl-esque to describe someone as a mouldy fruit and I really enjoy that brand of dark, child-like humour.
Tumblr media
There is some discussion of 17th century treatment of women who didn’t conform to societal norms. They were either considered mad or witches and sadly, Thomasina’s mother falls victim to vicious rumours like this, when she’s actually just overcome with grief for her son. The way that these women were taken from their homes and families, locked away in places like Bedlam and allowed to be spectacles for curious members of the public is such a horrendous thing from our past but it’s an important chapter that everyone should remember and learn from. So, I really appreciated seeing it visited in a historical fantasy story for children.
Tumblr media
I can’t deny that there is a huge amount of deep sadness in this book. However, Thomasina is an incredibly kind soul who accepts people as they are and she is determined to rid other people of their judgements too. I loved the overriding theme of love and understanding that rang throughout the book within Thomasina’s character and that these things came out on top at the end.
Tumblr media
I really loved all the Scottish folklore references that cropped up. Thomasina’s mother grew up in Scotland and loved to tell her daughter stories from her culture. Celtic mythology isn’t explored in children’s fiction very often but it is one of beautiful, winter imagery and ethereal, mystical magic. It fits the whole atmosphere of this book perfectly and I think I’d loved to see more of it. Hopefully in future instalments, I will!
Tumblr media
The Frost Beasts are truly mesmerising and I really enjoyed watching them run and leap around the Other Frost Fair. There are some stunning visuals in this book that thoroughly transport you into the beautiful but dangerous world of Father Winter. Icy worlds are often both incredibly alluring yet deeply unsettling and the world-building definitely achieved that.
Tumblr media
The Miraculous Sweetmakers: The Frost Fair is a thrilling, heart-rending, magical ride that is tinged with tragedy and threat. There are some really lovely characters and themes of friendship, courage and kindness are all championed. It’s a fantastic winter adventure for younger readers but everyone can appreciate the heartwarming yet bittersweet taste it leaves on turning the final page.
Tumblr media
The Miraculous Sweetmakers: The Frost Fair by Natasha Hastings and illustrated by Alex T. Smith will be published by HarperCollins Children’s Books on 27th October 2022.
