From the DVD commentary, episode 1:
Neil: Maggie Service over there was actually the longest serving member of the cast because she was at the original read-through a year before we actually started shooting, I did a read-through of the script and Maggie played Sister Mary Loquacious and a number of other people in it.

Mr. Bates vs The Post Office (2024)
One of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history where hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.
This show is all based on a true story and it will make your blood boil and make you very angry at the injustice. This is still ongoing and you will not believe how long it has taken for the innocent postmasters and postmistresses to get this level of coverage. A must watch. If you are not in Britain, it will still be worth watching if you read up a little bit on the 'Horizon Post Office Scandal'. It really is just so wrong what has happened.

ScreenPlay: Road (BBC, 1987)
"Everyone's worried sick for you, you know. You can't just do this!"
"Why not?"
"Oh, come on. We all feel like this some time. But life must go on."
"Why?"
#screenplay#road#alan clarke#jim cartwright#single play#1987#neil dudgeon#jane horrocks#andrew wilde#william armstrong#willy ross#mossie smith#barbara keogh#moya brady#alan david#david thewlis#lesley sharp#susan brown#tim dantay#i throw around the word masterpiece a little too liberally i suspect‚ and have used it several times to describe works by Clarke; but it's#inescapable here. a seminal moment in british television‚ and one of the single greatest play adaptations ever screened‚ simultaneously#fiercely loyal to its stage origins without being tied down or encumbered by them. Cartwright speaks glowingly of Clarke as a collaborator#and it's not hard to see why: his restlessly prowling steadicam moving from derelict house to derelict house allows Road to fulfil its#destiny as wandering theatre‚ something the stage could never quite achieve. a fierce polemic on thatcherite britain and the aching poverty#and waste of a ruined generation. not that this is pure naturalism: a few minutes in Andrew Wilde‚ having tormented his sister‚ turns to#the camera and screams and suddenly you know you're not watching just any old kitchen sink drama‚ this is something different‚ this is some#kind of primal howl. two sinister young men dress in sharp suits ready for a night out; two young girls argue with their respective family#members; an older man reminisces hopelessly about times past; a young man is starving himself to death in a condemned house. and in the#dead centre‚ Lesley Sharp delivers one of the most devastating‚ affecting monologues ever written‚ as she stalks the desolate streets and#tries to keep herself from going mad with the grief and the horror and the pointlessness of it all. tv was a medium created for such scenes

“The female companions in the classic series never did anything but scream and twist their ankles”
#i find the common perception of the classic ladies as weak to be absolutely hilarious. my first thought is ‘feral’.#classic who#susan foreman#barbara wright#vicki pallister#sara kingdom#dodo chaplet#polly wright#victoria waterfield#zoe heriot#liz shaw#jo grant#sarah jane smith#leela#romana i#romana ii#nyssa#tegan jovanka#peri brown#melanie bush#ace mcshane#no katarina due to her unfortunately dying before she could do anything. i love her and would include her if there were anything to include.#liz also didn’t get very long to do a ton but i think science is pretty cool so she still gets her awesome points

New Scotland Yard: Papa Charlie (2.7, LWT, 1972)
"You realise, of course, that anybody, no matter what their rank or position, anybody who was at that meeting - who had sight of this - is now under suspicion of passing information to that gang, don't you?"
"Yes, of course."
"Someone's working on the inside. Could be anybody. Could even be Sergeant Ward - or perhaps you?"
"No."
"Well, we'll see. I intend to find out who it is. And I'm going to give myself one hour in which to do it."
#new scotland yard#stuart douglass#john reardon#john woodvine#john carlisle#sally home#tony melody#michael turner#alison king#michael stainton#john caesar#victor brooks#susan brown#ken barker#les clark#derek ware#john hartley#dave carter#max faulkner#alan chuntz#clearly an attempt to do.. if not a 'bigger' episode exactly‚ then one with greater impact. shot entirely on film‚ we follow Kingdom during#the transport of a high profile prisoner (a gang boss) whilst simultaneously we see that his wife (hello Mrs Kingdom! back after her sole#previous appearance way back in 1.9) being kidnapped and held to ransom. it's...hmm. it's fine enough i suppose but it feels very unlike#the show to date; actually this feels almost like a watershed moment‚ the point at which heavily scripted‚ thoughtful cop drama ceased to#exist in the UK and was gradually replaced by greater emphasis on action and violence and hardness: the start of things like the second#iteration of Special Branch‚ into The Sweeney‚ into The Professionals. those shows were all capable of intelligence and nuance at times but#the focus became unmistakably Action and Spectacle (imo to the detriment of the genre). i might be egging this too much bc the ep still#finds some time to wrestle with moral quandries (but again‚ rather waves over Kingdom's unusual brutality in 'interviewing' a prisoner#suffering from Chekhov's Heart Complaint). Turner guests as another Chief Super‚ and would replace Woodvine in the 4th season#not as the same character i believe‚ but it's a safe bet this guest spot was instrumental in his later casting

In the shrinking sunlight of early October, life in Central Appalachia's forests and fields shows no signs of slowing down. A proliferation of asters and goldenrods fuels an insect feeding frenzy, at the same time ensuring that a late season eruption of seeds before the first frost will bring new life in the spring. From top: dog tooth lichen (Peltigera canina), also known as felt lichen, whose lobes are tipped by red apothecia ; large cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon), which dot wet mountain meadows and bogs; crooked-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides); brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba), which blooms later than black-eyed Susan and has three-lobed basal leaves; a bumblebee (Bombus) taking nectar from purple-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum), also known as swamp aster; an American hoverfly (Eupeodes americanus) similarly drinking from purple-stemmed aster; blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium); question mark butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis); and wrinkleleaf goldenrod (Solidago rugosa), also known as rough-leaf goldenrod.
