This year- especially as we reach the end- has been pretty rough on me. After having a pretty amazing creative blast through the last of summer, I feel like I just...collapsed. And I've been basically been struggling to get out of this pit I'm in. What better time to resurrect an old fan game idea, eh?

So this is Surface Level...originally, I had conceptualized this story a few years ago as, "The Middle Ground." and it had a wildly different story to it. Originally it was a sequel showing life on the surface and humans and monsters interacting. But ehhhh, it didn't really pan out. After playing the amazing Undertale: Yellow I got inspired to radically redo this entire story. Now it's become, "Surface Level." A story about a human and monster falling in love...or maybe becoming bitter, hateful enemies. Love, and Hate are core themes of this story, and unfortunately, I cannot reveal much more at the moment, since I'm still trying to organize it. I have a clear(er) image of how I want this project to go, but nothing concrete enough to share. Beyond these little snippets of art I've made.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to go anywhere with this idea, but it's still been an enjoyable creative exercise!

I want to give my opinion about the part two of surface level

I really really like how it ended, I think that having a part two would make the ending more complicated and less... enjoyable, lets put it that way

Maybe the word I'm looking for its convincing, because how to link the parts, does Y/n call J back? Or does she just want to use him as prey? And if she did want him as her prey how would J stop her from killing her? They can't live happily ever after, Joker won't stop being what he is and Y/n needs the water to survive.

Don’t get me wrong, I could make a second part work, it’s just (like you said) tying up the loose ends takes away from the story's mystery✨

Y/n needs water to survive. The ocean is her home and Joker has to begin his chapter in Gotham City. It wasn’t gonna work out from jump street. For example:

One could argue that Y/n could be held poisoner inside the Iceberg Lounge in Gotham (owned by The Penguin) or even his Museum that houses peculiar wonders. Joker “recuses her” but at that point you would view humans as the enemy and want nothing more to do with them.

Back to square one. You would view Joker as prey, not the young man you respected all those years ago. Joker changed a lot. He's not even Jack anymore and Y/n would instantly know that since you can sense people's hearts. So... not a happy ending.

Another example:

Taking a slice out of Little Mermaid and turn Y/n into a human. Well then it isn't a AU anymore. It'll be just another Joker x reader only you are adapting to the human world. And you kinda already know everything unlike Ariel. Y/n is ancient and knows the human language, culture, etc. All you'll need to learn is walking, the art of creating vocal speech, and learn restraint from eating humans.... 👀

Sooooooo we getting dark, not a HEA. Keeping the ending ambiguous preserves the storyline.

i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one

his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.

ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

ok yknow what Edit: i shouldve made it even more explicit at the end of this post, i hadnt thought i would need to since i started the post with this, but i think a few too many people are missing my point so i just wanna clarify. i shouldnt have said 'really clashed' and left it at that because yeah they did, but it wasnt just their opposite methods of communication, it is also very much that toshiro was experiencing microaggressions via laios. it may have been unintentional on laios's part, but it still happened and wore him down, made it harder for him to communicate on top of both the more subtle social cues that he was raised with and his own communication difficulties. i also want to say that the fandom reaction to toshiro and the complete ignorance of this point is also racist tbh or at the very least ignorant. i understand that the anime did not cover this panel, and neither did the manga, as this was an omake, but im gonna be real with you guys. there are enough context clues within the story to clue you into this. if you didnt pick up on it thats ok, but i think this is a good lesson in picking up subtext in the stories that youre watching and/or reading. kui shouldnt have to explicitly say 'by the way laios was racist to toshiro' for this point to be understood, and at the very least, when the author portrays a character in a sympathetic light (as kui clearly does) it should make you question Why they are doing so and what makes them sympathetic, rather than youre immediate and only reaction to be 'well i hated what this guy did/said so i hate them and they suck'. idk exactly how to finish this, just. idk. question your biases and gut reactions to things you see in media and stories, and think about whether or not theres subtext that youre missing.

Not exactly the most...erm, "flattering" pieces of art I've done in awhile. I'm no stranger to doing chicken scratch to hastily get ideas down, but it's been awhile since I've utilized MSPaint for it. Having said that, there was something quite cathartic doing things this way! Just jotting down some silly ideas and whatnot.

Anyways, this is more concept art stuff to go with my other Surface Level concept art. I'm starting to get a clearer view of this idea in my head and might be able to make some serious headway into it!

Jason Todd in Love…

As Red Hood, he’s talkative, sarcastic, aggressive, and cocky. When he’s with you, he’s tender and gentle. He’s eerily quiet and strangely calm. Every whim is followed without protest, and he hangs on every word.

Jason’s always looking for ways to touch you and will constantly pull you into his lap where he’ll give you soft kisses on your shoulder and neck. He just likes to watch you exist: he watches quietly when you’re getting ready, attempting to cook, etc. He loves how you’ll trail your nails up his arm and across the top of his back as you pass him on the sofa.

He loves you because you ground him: You’re real, you’re here and you’ve never left. His world slows down with you and, when he’s getting in his head and slipping away, you snap him out of it. You stand up to him. You talk your shit and force him back to you. “Don’t do that. You’re trying to talk yourself out of this.” You grab his face, forcing him to look at you. “You want me, yes or no?”

“Yes.” He’ll answer softly. “Always.”

“Then you have me.” You push him away from you. “Don’t try and find a way to ruin it. I will kick your ass. Got me?” You stare at him, arms folded and waiting for an answer.

He’ll give a smile before answering. “Yeah, I got you.” He looks at you honey eyed and apologetic.

“Good.” You move into his arms and place a gentle kiss on his cheek. “Now, go sit in the kitchen. I made us breakfast.”
