You started DISCOURSE between my husband and I on this, lemme say! Husband is solidly on the Harold side, and I’m solidly on the Ben side. Both of us agree that Leland sucks as a dad (it’s canonical that he cannot deal with a baby. sure, that baby is the Antichrist and might be a bit different than an ordinary baby, but still!!!! my dude was considering smothering lil Tim with a pillow!!!).

I don’t think Harold would be a bad father. He cares, and he’s got money so he can provide for his kid. But he’s so reclusive that it would be hard on any small child—though perhaps a small child would encourage him to get out into the world a bit more? I’ve worked with lots of littles and they don’t do well with limited spaces. They need room to explore and develop, and if Harold is spending most of his time with them in the library…plus they make sooo many messes. I guarantee you that his toddler would mess up the books on multiple occasions. But he would care, and that’s honestly the important bit. So I think he’d be a decent dad. Be hard for him to keep up with a younger kid, though. Probably would do well with teenagers.

Ben, on the other hand, is a good dad when Alex is younger. It’s really only when she’s a teen that they have problems, and it’s not for a lack of caring on Ben’s end. He very clearly loves Alex deeply, which is why her murder affects him so much and serves as a bit of a catalyst for his character growth. And in his eyes, separating her from Karl was legit to protect her from getting pregnant and dying. Was that the right way to go about that? No. My dude. Just talk to her about safe sex and the risks and stuff.

And again, it’s pretty canonical that when she was a kid, they had a lot of good times together. Teens are hard to deal with when you’re used to treating them like kids, and it’s gotta be tricky for any parent to look at their 16–year-old and still see the three-year-old or whatever. Not that that’s an excuse! But I get it.

So I honestly think Ben is the best dad, followed closely by Harold. Do not trust Leland with a child ever. Do not trust Leland with a person ever. Do not trust Leland ever.

Mun Commentary Interlude: One of the things I see as core to Legault's character is his deep regret from killing Aesha (the woman mentioned in his Matthew support quote) transforming into this inner drive that I can best label as "whatever I do, I've learned that I have to live with myself afterward." This is why he admires Heath for sticking to his principles from the get-go instead of needing the guilt of going through with heinous orders to recognize how impossible it is to keep living the same way afterward. It's why he has to try to reach out to the Reeds, even knowing that he won't sway them. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if he didn't try. The Jaffar and Nino supports are there because I think it's interesting how he asserts to love is to be human, but to be human is a deadly weakness to an assassin—and how he so clearly has loved and continued to love [he loves the Reeds, he loves Nino, he loves what the Black Fang used to be, he loves Heath (a flirtatious exaggeration, but one grounded in genuine admiration whether romantic or not)], and so clearly considers himself weak. And because of that weakness, he doesn't see himself as fit to care for Nino, even if he cares about her.

"Bold'a you to think you're owed a response," Linus growled out, giving the kid a proper once over after he'd been given a name. Still wasn't ringing any bells, so if this kid was somebody, Linus wasn't going to give a rat's ass about it. "Well, Erk from Etruria, I don't really see how anythin' 'bout me or my kin has anythin' to do with you." And with those words, said with an annoyed sort of finality, Linus did let the boy go -- releasing him to stumble back to his own footing as he turned to act like he was busy with something else. But the kid just wasn't taking the hint... Sighing loudly, shoulders slumping, Linus brought his attention back around to Erk. "Do I look dead to ya now?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Listen, I don't know ya and ya sure as hell ain't one of the F-- I don't know you. I don't know where ya got it in your head that you know me or my brother. We ain't never been to Etruria." He wasn't as good about keeping quiet about certain topics as Lloyd was, but Linus did try to catch himself -- it was just hard to try and figure out where this brat knew him from without giving something up.

"No. You don't look very dead." Erk dusts off the front of his uniform where he had been grabbed, frowning as he noted the wrinkles it in. His cape is also slightly wrinkled, but it often was, so he did not care so much about that, "But that is not an indicator if it happened or not."

He kneels, picking up the tome that had been dropped when Linus grabbed him.

"I don't suppose I did not know you, other than in passing. But I was..." He pauses, wondering what exactly he was meant to say to explain how he knew of Linus and the Black Fang, "I was a part of Eliwood's army, for a time."

It is not at all a sufficient explanation of what he had actually been doing, but he does not care to tell the whole truth right now.
