“Do you think, they followed us?” Dean asked pantingly, as he slammed the door of the drafty hut behind them.

“Sure hope not,” Castiel answered, equally out of breath.

In another world it was mid October, the air was growing cold again; the first storms had already hit their camp. Winter was coming. But since Sam accepted Lucifer as his vessel, they only had one season, and it was called war.

“Damn those Croats!” Dean was looking through the gabs in the wooden wall, searching for any persecutors. “It’s getting dark … we should get the sigils up and stay the night. There’s no way making it back to camp in the dark.”

“Whatever you say, my fearless leader.” He didn’t care whether he lived or died. Neither did Dean, but unlike Cas, he had people who counted on him.

Dean was shooting him a disapproving glance, but he chose to ignore it. Silently they started to decorate the miserable hut with sigils of red paint. Not so many years ago, these sigils would have pained Castiel, making it impossible for him to stay. But these times seemed an eternity away. His perception of time had become somewhat disturbed. Maybe it was the drugs.

“All done,” Cas declared after finishing the task. “Want some?” he asked, already lighting the joint. He had been craving it since morning, but they were on a mission. And on missions he was always (mostly) sober. It was a promise to Dean after he first started taking drugs.

“Yeah, sure, why not?” Dean was settling next to him on the rotten floor, deeply inhaling the smoke.

They were relaxing into each other, waiting for the sun to set and the night to come; ignoring the cold slowly creeping in from outside.  

“Looks like we have some time to kill”, Castiel mentioned after a while of silence.

“Yeah, looks like it …” Dean answered absently.

“It’s gonna be a cold night too.”

Dean slowly turned his head to look into Cas’ eyes. The once sparkling green eyes were tired and visibly numb. “So, you wanna fuck?” Dean asked without emotion.

“Like the world is ending.” Because it was.

Sam and Castiel sat on the couch, an open bag of Halloween candy on the coffee table before them.

"So," Sam began. "Do you wanna watch a movie?"

"Do you mean a porn film?"

Sam snickered. "I was thinking more like horror. Y'know, for Halloween?"

Cas nodded, his mouth an "O" of understanding. "Yes, that does seem more appropriate, given the occasion."

Sam scratched beneath his mane. "I mean, I could put on porn if you-"

"No! I mean, that is not necessary." Cas coughed. "I just want to sit and watch with you. The kind of film doesn't matter." The angel paused slightly between every second word or so.

Sam fought to keep his grin down. "Thanks, Cas. I think I'll go with horror tonight."

Sam surfed through the motel's available channels, landing on Dawn of the Dead.

The two reached into the bowl, their hands meeting on the same Reese's cup. Castiel took his hand away, leaving the candy for Sam. Sam removed the cup from the wrapper and split it into two messy halves. He handed one half to the angel, licking the chocolate smearing on his fingers.

"I just like watching with you too, Cas."

Suptober Day 7: Thankful

It doesn't feel real. For the first time in weeks, the fog is lifted from Dean's mind, and his heart isn't an open wound in his chest. Cas is sitting in the backseat of the Impala as they drive back to the bunker. He's alive. Dean could reach across the backseat and touch him, and he'd be flesh and blood.

They catch Cas up on what he missed, though Dean redirects the conversation when Sam lingers too long on how much Dean had been drinking. What's past is past, and Cas is here and alive. As he drives, he spends more time looking at Cas in the rearview mirror than at the road in front of him.

When they get back to the bunker, after Cas and Jack have met for the first time, after everyone's starting to turn in for the night, Dean drags Cas down to the Dean Cave to watch a movie.

"Dean," Cas protests half-heartedly, "you need to get some sleep."

"I'll sleep when I'm dead."

"That's not funny."

Dean ignores him and grabs an old faithful: The Lost Boys. He knows he's going to fall asleep halfway through, anyway. "'Sides, you missed a bunch of movie nights. Time to catch up."

As they settle into their respective recliners, Dean turns to look at Cas and finds himself already being watched. Cas's soft, steady gaze makes his throat tighten dangerously. He wishes they were laid out in his bed, close enough to share a pillow.

His heart is beating loudly in his chest, a steady repeat of alivealivealivealive. He doesn't have anyone to be thankful to because Chuck sure as shit didn't do anything, but he's brimming over with it.

"I'm glad you're back, buddy," he says almost normally.

Cas's lips quirk into a small smile. "I'm glad I'm back."

Dean forces himself to look away first. He can feel Cas watching him right up until he falls asleep.

Dean flinched at the sound of the bunker door slamming shut. The words, I think it’s time for me to move on , echoed through his mind. He might have gone too far. Cas left and he didn’t say a word. Maybe he’d lost Cas for good, maybe there was no fixing it this time, maybe he’d fractured his world too far beyond repair. He needed a drink.

The whiskey burned as it made its way down his throat; it was a welcome pain. The heat curled in his stomach and he left the map room, headed to his room for a long night of drowning his pain in alcohol.

He didn’t make it to his room, though. Jack’s door was ajar, the way he’d left it before… well, before. It looked so small, so empty, so untouched, almost as if nobody had ever lived there. He pulled the door shut, his heart aching, as he moved on down the hall towards his room.

Cas had been right. He did still blame him for Mary. He blamed all of them. But mostly he blamed himself. He’d failed her after being the only reason she’d been dragged back in the first place. So he lashed out, got violent, and it didn’t fucking matter anyway. Jack, Cas, Mom, hell, even Rowena, they were all equally gone . He had nothing left. Except Sam. He’d always have Sam, but he’d hoped that he’d always have Cas, too. He thought no matter what they went through that it wouldn’t be enough to break whatever bond it was they had.

He pulled out his phone, instinctively opening his contacts and hovering over Cas’ name. That’s what he did when shit went wrong. He called Cas. He could always call Cas.

They didn't give us enough Sam and Castiel scenes in the show. Here's a bitter-sweet one between the two of them, talking about Dean and the whole 'unrequited love' thing. A ficlet the gives a Destiel fan just the right amount of heavy heart.

It’s the Stars that Lie by @seperis

Ok, this fic doesn't need recommandations, but it's still needs public praises. To fully appreciate it, you need to read the fever dream that is Map of the World first, but I love how the author builds on the glimpses that the episode The End gave of the apocalypse!world. The OCs are interesting (and many of them are POC), and the lovely slow burn between Dean and Castiel is spiced up with the fake boyfriends trope.

Since I've Been Loving You - Remaster by tgel210 (AO3)

I like Castiel's first-person POV, Dean being a musician without being a rock star: it feels close to home like my next-door neighbor is talking to me about the love of his life.

Closer than they appear by sunkenfox (AO3)

Dean and Castiel figuring out what their life could be together by looking at Misha and Jensen is interesting. Even more interesting is the concept that like it or not, the Supernatural characters would not exist in their world without the writers and the actors in an other world. That Dean and Jenses share more than a face; same for Misha and Castiel (even if the difference are more obvious between the last two). A story of discorvery on a meta level, hiding inside a cute Destiel and RPF romance.

A wonderful but sad exploration of Sam Winchester throughout his life; from his lack of bodily autonomy to his dying faith in god(s) and humanity. I read this story when I was maybe 16 and re-read it twice or three times in the year after. That being said, I can remember it almost excruciatingly well. I'm a post-apocalypse gal and I crave anything in that genre, so it was doubtless that I'd love this story. But the world-building done in this story? The characterization? The tension it manages to build? It's so gripping and exciting and I remember reading it worried out of my mind for the characters and exhaling the deepest breath as the story drew to a close. It's a not too dense read and an enveloping one, you'll forget you're above ground by the end of it!

Empty Spaces by @schmerzerling

This story made me fall in love with writing again. It's so heavy with how it distributes emotion in its words, but also so soothing too. This reads like watching a glass vase get tipped over the edge of a table and, maybe distantly, wondering if someone will catch it in time. But it doesn't quite matter because the flowers are beautiful and if you're crying then it's about the flowers and not the vase. I highly recommend this story to everyone, heavy as its contents may be. I felt safe reading this, I ached, I adore this story beyond words can capture.

Phantasma! by @thisisapaige

I very rarely read things that are horror inclined (funny as that is given the nature of Spn), and maybe this story is not considered horror either, but it left me just on that edge of eerie and it was exhilarating. Most of the story is sweet, and cathartic, as Dean rebuilds his life outside of his family and finds that in Castiel. But the mystery of it all, the unknown, it left me waiting for the other shoe to drop and this writer was excellent at making that payoff worth it.

The Art of Falling by @zipegs

This story was gritty and ugly and didn't pull back punches when it came to its emotional weight. Recovery is a nightmarish process of relapse and pain and relief and this story embodied this with its characters beautifully. This story was lonely, in the sense that its only two characters yes but it also felt a lot like reading about two characters pitted against the backdrop of everything. The world, the universe, existence. It made me feel small but so vast at the same time, and it was so utterly human (funny given the context of the story). It's a short and beautiful read that left me aching but in a way that was comforting as opposed to alienating.

With The End Came You by @lotrspnfangirl

I adore zombie apoclaypse AUs but so few of them focus on the characters' growth alongside the events of the series. And so few of them do side characters justice. This story was THE exception. Not only does the progression of the characters not sideline the plot and vice versa, but the story handles people so so well. You have those that stick around for long, and those that don't, and it treats both parties so faithfully that I'm left emotional over side characters I've only had a page worth of content with as much as the main characters I'm with the entire time. This is a zombie apocalypse AU that puts people first and foremost, and its so human and such a rewarding story to those that have even the smallest interest in these types of AUs. And the progression of the plot is so smooth and natural, TWD could never (and I love that show so take with that as you will).

Dark As Midnight (And You Don’t Look The Same) by @kassyscarlett

This is a story that follows a young Dean (17 years-old) out looking for a good time and running into an older man that gives what he wants. Not realizing he knows him, that he is in fact his Sammy. This story is so good! Time-travel, the follies of youth, needing to be protected from yourself, and realizing years later what that random encounter really was. It is part of a series, but works as a stand alone. But the entire series is worth checking out.

Coming Out Of The Dark by firesign10 (AO3)

It's a story about others helping one they know is broken, giving him what he needs so he can move on and live the rest of his life. The Richesters visit Sam in the bunker after Dean's death, and give him one final night together, so that he might carry on. It tragic and beautiful and has all the feels. Highly recommend.

I have read this story many, many times. It’s adorable and hilarious. It’s cute and awkward in a way that someone who isn’t sure how to tell about a weird scar or birthmark is. The ending is the best part of the entire thing.

This is a work in progress. It’s great! Zariah is such a great writer in so many genres. This one is about Dean exploring bdsm for the first time and ends up also realizing things about himself too. Poor Dean learns the hard way that it is Cas he loves about bdsm but still. Their connection and energy with each other is felt as you read. Highly recommend reading!

I am not normally one to read infidelity fics; however, this is destiel. It’s the holidays and Cas and Dean get left alone to reconnect. They tried to be a couple at the beginning once Cas came back from the Empty but they weren’t ready for it. Now, years later and they are! The confessions and the hot smut is just so exacting for them. It’s gorgeous! Dean has always loved Cas and Cas still loves Dean. Oh, I’d love to see how it works out but this reconnection is just purely intense and the dopamine is addictive. Good luck. MUST READ!

The Case of Dean and Castiel's Extremely Resolvable Tension by CanonFodder (Tartan_Temptation) (AO3)

This is hilarious and hot AF! It starts out explaining the premise and drives right into it where Dean finally gives in. He is so happy he does too. He gets a wonderfully deserving reward. Poor Sam and his need for eye bleach. Lol!

Objects May Appear Smaller by @valandrawrites

The instant connection of Cas and Dean, and the science of this story makes this a one-of-a-kind a/b/o. Despite it being incomplete, it’s such a fluffy and fascinating read. It keeps you wanting more with every one of the six chapters. I hope one day they get inspired to write more.

I love this story. I love that it’s a different take on Castiel—he’s a gargoyle. It’s such a fascinating story and their connect is seen by the readers but not Dean. It’s interesting how Dean starts to notice and how intense and romantic it gets. Sex and flying are fascinating, man. This is written oh so well!

Three's Company by @luci-in-trenchcoats

Cas x f!Reader that becomes Cas x f!reader x Dean. It shows a very healthy ethical non-monogamy relationship. I love how the Reader initially freaks, I think, and when Cas and them come to talk to Dean, he freaks too. Everyone is patient with each other though. It’s as it should be when introducing polyamory to non-poly experience people. It’s so sweet and wonderful to read. It’s adorable. This is how poly fics should be.

1 - alt universe - different first meeting

my fave!! tommy never leaves the 118 OR they meet on a call before season 7 because tommy is flying the chopper - he's been around so much already - or one of them is injured or trapped/stranded. i just really love them both being firefighters but meeting at an earlier point in canon.

2 - alternate universe - different jobs

not a big fan of their jobs being completely different - like actors, doctors, athletes, ceos etc. (although i have seen a few tumblr ficlets that have me wanting to read 50k of a particular dynamic) but i do love when their jobs are different threads taken from canon (or related media) so: swat!tommy (thankyou swat!lou), mercenary!tommy (thankyou Outer Banks lou), 118!tommy, seal!buck, armypilot!tommy, mechanic!tommy, chef!buck, ranchhand!buck, bartender!buck..

BTW: going to add Royal AUs in here because holyshit i love the potential (and oliver being in Into The Badlands makes me wanna watch) whether set in medieval times or modern times gimme arranged marriage or forbidden love or anything i just need some royal boys or one royal boy and one civilian or soldier or something i need them all.

i have envisioned a few vampire au ideas sparked by some of lou's photoshoots and an audition video he did for a vamp role? but i haven't found any vamp fics yet. i love the idea of older vampire!tommy with human buck. a simple yet delicious concept.

4 - super powers

maybe i'm a little swayed by the fact lou has played a superhero, and also there's a Percy Jackson AU going around that i was surprised by how much i enjoyed it, but yeah gimme superpowers: either one or both of them have powers, could be an X-Men type thing or The Boys or something. i'm very much into the whole antihero and vigilante thing so gimme some angst, maybe some Daredevil or Jessica Jones vibes. i'm also a fan of the clark/superman secret identity thing and the two-person love triangle thing.

5 - sentinel guide

this is the first i'm hearing of this trope but i googled it and i like the sound of it: it would have elements of a Fantasy or Superpowers AU but with the specific dynamic of buck having a power or purpose and either not feeling up to the task or going overboard or needing help and tommy being his guardian or guide, and for their relationship to shift into something romantic even though it's not supposed to, i love that.

6 - modern magic

i don't really like modern magic - i'm more into fantasy worlds and pre-modern magic. something about mixing magic with the digital technology era just doesn't spark joy in me. HOWEVER: i would be into witchy stuff set in the 90s or earlier (i've seen talk of a Practical Magic AU on the dash and i would be all over that even though i haven't watched the movie yet i know enough about it to want it).

7 - soulmates

being a Supernatural fan meant developing a loathing for soulmates and fate because in canon they're tied to a controlling asshole god, so i'm sort of conditioned to evil-eye soulmate tropes. HOWEVER: i absolutely adore the invisible string theory for buck and tommy, but i don't think there's much there to focus on fic-wise. it works as a satisfying narrative thing in the show, but idk.. i'm open to good fic recs for this trope if anyone has them?

8 - fairytale retelling

i confess i don't really understand this trope? i tried googling it and i kinda get it, but i think it would be a struggle to make it bucktommy without getting too ooc? idk. if anyone can give me an example with our boys that'd be great because right now i'm just confused and don't see it.

9 - werewolf

despite being an og Teen Wolf fan, i don't like werewolf AUs for other shows. outside of Teen Wolf i'm just not into it, which is odd i think.

10 - omegaverse

I'm not a native English speaker, but I think I've picked it up at a decent level.

I watched the entirety of Supernatural (pain).

I tried to learn Sindarin when I was 14.

I tried to learn Klingon when I was 17.

My favorite song to play on guitar is Hey Jude, and it totally has something to do with Supernatural.

Sometimes Imagine by John Lennon is hitting something deep inside of my chest.

I consider myself a Star Wars fan (pain).

Batman Returns (1992) is a Christmas movie, one of the best, and you won't be able to convince me otherwise.

My favourite cinematic moment of all the time was and will be the scene of Eorlingas riding down the hill at the Uruk-hai with the blinding sun rising behind their backs and the music so bright and inspiring and powerful; I haven't seen more beautiful (or even matching) moment in cinema in my entire life.

I listen to movie soundtracks a lot. Here are the top-3 movies I love the soundtrack from: The Lord of The Rings (the whole trilogy), the new Star Trek trilogy, and Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3. These trilogies rule.
