Man who is secretly an alien but also the worst liar on earth
COMMISSIONS OPEN
The 40’s superman radio show honestly has so many jokes that still hold up, this is more or less an exact interaction from one of the episodes
I may or may not have couple mini comics sketched up for this show 👀👀
Text ID under cut;
4 Panel digital art mini comic of 1940’s radio show Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen
Panel 1 - Clark Kent is a blur on the left side as he uses his superspeed to arrive. In front of him on the right is Jimmy Olsen he's taking a photo.
Panel 2 - Clark is now fully in focus and looks very uncomfortable. Jimmy looks up at Clark and says "Hey Mister Kent, I didn't see you come. Say, how'd you get here so quickly, anyways"
Panel 3 - Clark holds up his left hand swatting off the question, he looks uncomfortably off to the side with an obviously strained smile and replies "ha ha ha... Never mind that." In front Jimmy looks at him questioningly.
Panel 4 - Clark points to the right with conviction as he shouts "what's that over there!", His glasses shine blocks out his eyes. Jimmy follows Clark's finger.

So I recently listened to some episodes of the 1940 Superman radio show and, um...
I was not expecting to start crying at the first episode.
Like, the rest of the episodes are fun 40s superhero adventures, but the actress voicing Lara is gutwrenching at the end of episode one
It made me appreciate the ending of Superman: Birthright a lot more at the very least
Here's a link if you're interested (and if you don't like the format just google superman radio show and like 5 options will pop up)
(Also this archive says it’s from 1938 but everything else says 1940 so I'm assuming they accidently looked up when superman was invented)

Not to reveal too much about my recent-ish media consumption but it's been weird jumping between different adaptations from different eras
Like in the radio show, Superman is really secretive about his existence and if I didn't know any better I would say that it was to protect his identity as Clark Kent, Reporter For A Great Metropolitan Newspaper. I think they were still treating it as a possibility that someone could recognise him (but he also straight-up threatens criminals not to tell anyone after exposing himself so is he that worried about it?)
And then I started watching Superman & Lois and it took me off guard it that nobody recognises him without being told? Like when we start, Jon and Jordan just have no clue that their dad is Superman even at 14 years old. When I saw Jordan's introductory scene where he's beating Superman up in a video game and Clark was disappointed, I thought he was just being an jerk! It wasn't until later in the episode where Clark and Lois started talking about it that I realised they hadn't told them. And later on I was surprised again that John Henry saw Clark with Lois and didn't know he was Superman? Or Lana not recognising Clark upon seeing Superman up close? They’re playing at the cognitive dissonance explanation without spelling it out, a trait this shares with most other modern adaptations but felt especially jarring here.

Remembered another really good point.
Superman did more to fight racism in the real world, than anything the proheros did for their own world
Seriously a Superman radio show was used to out a lot of information that the KKK did not want getting out, even causing them a drop in membership. He exposed information included codewords, rituals and the details of their bigotry, which was based on the collected information obtained by activist Stetson Kennedy in 1946!
Media does influence the real world, and what's the message MHA is spreading, especially involving this topic? It's sure as Hell not hold bigots accountable for their actions
If the mutant plot line is about racism, would it be fair to say that ending was unintentionally racist/used racist elements? I’m not saying Hori is racist or anything, but the story ending basically telling the mutants that they would get somewhere if only they work together “peacefully” with Shoji getting an award for that? It feels, to me, that it’s emphasizing being the “good” minority and then good things will happen.
A lot of racism and other forms of discrimination aren’t from active effort, but lack of effort and consideration
Now focusing on how much bullshit this argument is, Martin Luther King Jr. the pinnacle of peaceful protest for civil rights, was assassinated for it! He had multiple direct attempts on his life, and numerous death threats! The government hated him the whole time he was alive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Martin_Luther_King_Jr.#:~:text=As%20early%20as%20the%20mid,recognition%20part%20of%20his%20philosophy.
The Black Panthers also played a massive role in getting equal rights. And protecting their communities from unjust violence. https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/black-panther-party-challenging-police-and-promoting-social-change
And a big part of both platforms was not being convenient for their oppressors. Being convenient makes it so the oppressors have no reason to change anything because they benefit from it

It’s time for a, “things I sent to my twin’s inbox but she said I should post myself because I never post my own work and she’d like if I stopped spamming her inbox with ideas but I forgot about it and just kept it in my drafts notes for months and now finally I’m posting the fucking things.”
Or for short:
DP X DC PROMPT #7:
————————————
Danny visits metropolis and people are deadset on believing that Danny is either Clark’s little brother or his nephew from Illinois… despite that Clark can literally not be related to him. Not that the people at the Daily Planet know that, but even the ones who do know are giving him a hard time.
“I’m adopted Jimmy!” Clark threw his hands in the air in frustration. “You are very aware of that.”
“But he looks just like you Clark, you even talk the same!” Jimmy peaked around the corner, catching a glimpse of Danny talking to Lois in the employees lounge.
“He has a upper midwestern accent. I’m from Kansas, Jim. Not all midwesterners know each other!”
“So?”
“Jimmy. You know damn well why we can not be related.” Clark subtly gestured to his cheap “I believe in aliens” mug. Jimmy was Clark’s best friend and most of the time he really appreciated the kid’s keen eye but Jimmy also seemed to be constantly dead-set on figuring how to give Clark a headache.
“But he looks like a mini you! Have you asked him if he has a spare spaceship lying around anywhere?” Jimmy snarked as he glanced over to Danny and Louis who were finally heading back from their break.
“Jimmy, I will put you on the moon and leave you there.”
“Alright sheesh. I get it, I’ll drop it.”

Daily Diana #17
I am going issue by issue through Wonder Woman (1987—) and drawing my favourite outfits on a very vague daily schedule.
And we’re back, baby! My schedule has lightened and I finally have capacity to draw again. Very happy about that. This was issue 17, the beginning of a new arc (kinda). Lots of fun outfits :)

This DESTROYED the KKK in America for a time. Members came home to find their kids pretending to be Superman and beating up “the Clan” and had something of a “are we the baddies?” moment.
Clan of the Fiery Cross by George Putnam Ludlam
A baseball dispute provides a thinly disguised Klu Klux Klan with the pretext for violence... but the anonymous terrorists have underestimated the crusading staff of the Daily Planet.

August 1940. Perhaps the most important Superman story never published: In the summer of 1940, Jerry Siegel wrote a complete script for a 26-page Superman epic (the length of two normal Superman stories of this period) in which Superman is weakened by a passing meteor of radioactive metal from the destroyed planet Krypton, here called "K-Metal." That alone would have been noteworthy, but that's far from all. Later in the story, Superman reveals his true identity to the survivors of a mine cave-in, including Lois Lane!
Tumblr media
The other three witnesses are subsequently killed, but Lois now knows the truth. She and Superman then have the following conversation:
LOIS: Now I begin to see. Your attitude of cowardliness as Clark Kent-- It was just a screen to keep the world from learning who you really are! But there's one thing I must know: Was your--er--affection for me, in your role as Clark, also a pretense? SUPERMAN: THAT was the genuine article, Lois! LOIS: How foolish you were not to let me in on the secret! You should have known you could trust me! Why-- Don't you realize-- I might even be of great help to you? SUPERMAN: You're right! There were many times when I could have used the assistance of a confederate. Why didn't I think of it before? LOIS: Then it's settled! We're to be--partners! SUPERMAN: Yes -- partners!
It isn't quite so easy, however. After returning to Metropolis, Lois tells Clark, "I just remembered how long you've secretly been laughing at me! I don't like to be laughed at, Clark Kent-- But-- I'll assist you… Only for the good of humanity, however!"
Most of the art for this story was completed, or nearly completed, by Joe Shuster's shop artists before National-DC pulled the plug. The exact reasons are now unknown, although the most likely explanation is that the story just seemed like too much of a shift in the established dynamics of the Superman strip, which was by then running in newspapers and on the radio as well as in the comics. K-Metal, renamed Kryptonite, resurfaced in a 1943 radio storyline, which borrows some elements from this script, but Kryptonite wouldn't appear in the comics until 1949, and it wouldn't be until decades later that Lois Lane really and truly learned the secret.
For background on this story, see Mark Waid's article in ALTER EGO #26 (July 2003). The Superman Through the Ages website has a nearly complete recreation of the full story, done by modern artists (in color) based on the surviving pages of original art and Siegel's script, which Waid had carefully retyped using the same kind of typewriter Siegel used.

Kinda part 2 of this? (not really but it’s also fanart of radio Clark)

ID under cut;
Image 1:
3 panel vertical comic of 1940’s radio show Superman
Panel 1; Superman is hovering over a lit roof window, he’s smiling and holding up his right hand in a fist saying “there’s the skylight!”
Panel 2; Close up of his fist as he punches and breaks the window with a *krrk* sound effect
Panel 3; back to full body shot of superman now with his hands on his hips and smiling triumphantly over the now destroyed window as he says “there WAS the skylight!”
Image 2;
A digital drawing of Superman in the centre of the canvas sitting crisscrossed his left hand waving and his right neatly in his lap as he beams at the viewer. There is a hard yellow light coming from the audiences right hand side and a yellow dotted rectangle in the background to help highlight Clark. Text with an arrow pointing to Clark on his left side reads “nuisance to property everywhere”

[ID: a screen recording of episode 5 of the Adventures of Superman (radio show). In it, Clark Kent has been kidnapped and shackled by a villain. Alone Superman chuckles and says to himself, “Haha—handcuffs, eh? It's a good thing for you I wasn't feeling playful!” before breaking them. END ID]

Gail Simone's New 52 Batgirl run was the only comics run I ever truly followed as it was releasing and naturally I quit when Burnside happened lol. I did follow Superman Smashes the Klan as it released in issues before it became a collected graphic novel, and even listened to the Klan of the Fiery Cross old radio show arc in anticipation!
I read a ton of Batman comics sporadically in college and generally that's how I read cape comics nowadays. Pick a character, read a random comic run/graphic novel.

Just saw your tags about Dick & Clark meeting first, where is this from?
the old time radio the adventures of superman show from the 1940s! unfortunately most of the serial was lost - we only have episode 2, 4, and 5, out of a 12 part serial. they are number 432-434 in this archive, if you wanna listen dick shows up in 433/part 4!
in brief, batman goes missing on a dangerous mission he refused to let dick in on, and dick, after trying everything, ends up writing a letter to superman asking for his help, and sends it to the planet. clark finds dick unconscious on a boat and rescues him, and they start working together to find bruce! and then the rest of the episodes are lost so we have to piece together the rest of the plot through secondhand sources :,)
