The morning arrived with a cold autumn light, its soft beams slipping through the heavy curtains of Bruce’s room, casting pale streaks across the dark space. 

The air was crisp, carrying the scent of rain from the night before, and the quiet hum of Gotham waking up barely reached the thick walls of Wayne Manor. Bruce stirred slightly, his body still aching from the explosion, though the pain medication dulled most of it to a manageable throb. 

He had fallen asleep sometime around midnight, exhaustion finally pulling him under after fighting it for hours. And yet, when he shifted against the pillows, adjusting his sore muscles, he was met with a sight that left his stomach twisting in something far more unsettling than pain.

Clark was still there.

The man hadn’t left his side, not for one second. 

He was still in the same clothes from the day before, his tie loosened, his white button-up wrinkled and slightly unkempt. His broad frame was slouched into the pillows, taking up more space in Bruce’s bed than he probably realized, his long legs half-tangled in the sheets. 

And his hair—God, his hair—was a mess of dark curls spread across the pillow, soft and wild, some strands clinging to his forehead. The dim morning light made them look even softer, highlighting the rich brown dark hidden beneath the black.

Bruce should have pushed him away last night. 

He should have been colder, harsher, done something to convince Clark to leave and never look back. That would’ve been the logical, safer choice. 

But he hadn’t. 

Instead, he had let Clark in, let him stay, let him crawl into his bed like it was the most natural thing in the world. And now, as Bruce watched him—his face peaceful, lashes fanning against his cheek, full lips slightly parted in sleep—he felt something heavy settle in his chest.

Clark looked unreal like this. Too perfect, too effortless.
