I published a story!!
Tumblr media
If you're interested in reading, it's available on KU.
Stars in the Sky is a high heat short romance between two wildly famous superhumans - Maeve Black, an A-List actress with the ability to manipulate gravity, and Patriot, America's greatest living superhero. Though the pair have always shared somewhat of an antagonistic relationship, they find themselves drawn to one another when they become overwhelmed by the swanky Hollywood party they're attending.
I've always wanted to write a superhero romance, focusing on the drama of the interpersonal relationships of the characters rather than having the main focus be on the action. I've held off on publishing very much in this genre since I know there isn't a huge market for it, but if I'm being true to myself, it's what I want to write, so I may as well publish and share with likeminded readers. If this doesn't find an audience, at least I had fun writing it!
There's been a lot of gritty twists on classic superheroes as of late in both comics and on TV, and as I eat it all up, I'm throwing my hat into the ring with my own take on the edgy superhero trend.
***
Stars in the Sky does not have a happy ending. It leaves our main characters feeling a little lost after a fleeting moment of connection. This is because while this short story can be read as a stand-alone piece, it’s meant to set the stage for a superhero flavored romantic drama I intend to follow this with.
The short story takes place some months before the drama kicks off, and it follows our protagonist, Maeve, on her mission to improve the lives of her fellow superhumans.
Patriot will return in the drama as a major character, alongside another major character who does not appear in the short story—the man who originally set all of this in motion.

Time travel, save the world... and fall in love.
Oasis has been the superhero SwordBright for longer than anyone might expect. All went well for a while, and then the world got destroyed. So now, back in time in their 20 years old body, they need the help of their local super villain if they want to prevent all this from happening again.
Karry is technically an eldrich god-monster trapped in a human body, but she’s been pretending to be the super villain «The Vampire Queen» for decades now. It’s fine; people fear her and her nemesis is an idiot child with a sword, which makes her job quite easy. But then Oasis shows up at her door, asking her help with preventing a tyrant from rising to power, and all her carefully laid plans start to crumble.
Time moves ever onward, and sometimes, there’s nothing but a blurry line separating heroes from monsters.
Hey all! Do you like free books? Do you like time travel fix-its? Vampires? Nonbinary Canadian superheroes?! Then you might like SwordBright!
Read it for free now on Tapas! More than 50k words already (that’s the lenght of a small novel!) and more coming soon.

✩🦸‍♂️💜Review:
Where have superhero romance novels been all my life?!?
I thoroughly enjoyed this new genre of writing that Zapata explored in ”When Gracie Met the Grump.” It was really easy to become fully immersed in the fictional world she created because it is modeled after our own with the only difference being the presence of superheroes. As a huge Marvel and DC Comics fan, I was immediately intrigued by the Trinity, the Zapata equivalent of the Avengers and the Justice League. Gracie’s interactions with The Defender after he crash lands in her yard slowly reveal bits and pieces surrounding the Trinity’s relation to mankind and each other, their unique abilities, and the thinking behind who they choose to save. Zapata’s choice to withhold information until the very last moment maintained a sense of mystery that kept me engaged to the very last page.
Aside from the superheroes, another aspect I loved about the book was the relationship development between Gracie and The Defender. The two start out as strangers and quickly become “temporary friends” when they are kidnapped by the cartel. With The Defender out of commission, Gracie prioritizes his needs over her own to nurture him back to health and increase their chances of escape. Gracie’s willingness to care for him despite her precarious situation is what ultimately convinces The Defender to let down his walls and let her be “best friend number 20” (in actuality, she holds the number 1 spot).
While he still gives Gracie a hard time on occasion with his grouchiness, The Defender proves to be a big softie by the novel’s end. I love how protective he is of Gracie, how he goes above and beyond to ensure she feels safe, and how he finds ways to make her dreams come true after living such a sheltered life. Most of all I love how Zapata took her time establishing the intricacies and depth of their friendship before gradually delving into their romantic relationship.

Book Review - Worth the Fight
Title: Worth the Fight (Base City Romance: Book 3)
Author: Ellie Roth
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
Thanks to BookSirens and Ellie Roth for a free advance review e-copy of this book, I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Continuing the battle for peace in Base City, this book focuses on superhero Ice Queen, real name Ashley Qing, her Police contact and lover Taylor Jameson, and his ex-girlfriend, Coyote gang member Jolene Turner, who is currently utilising the Morningstar DP-11 suit. When a new threat arrives in Base City these three need to work together.
What I liked: The relationship dynamics were great. And I still love the overall story. The second half of the book was much more action packed than the first half, and the previous book.
What didn’t work for me:  The pace was too slow for the first half, I just kept losing interest following Ice Queen and Morningstar tromping around the Island and it didn’t get much more interesting when Taylor joined them.  Also I still don’t get Jo’s commitment to the Coyotes, yes they were currently seeming to do good but they still came up as drug dealers and criminals.
Final thoughts: A good addition to the series, if a bit lacking in action for the first half. Who would enjoy reading this: Those who have read the first two books of the series.

Review:
Alejandro Alvarez is many things: a superhero, a single father, a widower. One thing he is not is a computer expert, so when, on the anniversary of his wife's death, his powers overload and destroy his office, he has no choice but to call the Heroes IT Department.
Sarah Bailey answers the call. Quick witted, fixer oriented, and nomadic, Sarah has applied for an IT position at the Heroes Organization on a whim. She never expected to meet its leader...or that said leader's power would cause every piece of technology in his office to explode. Still, Sarah is undaunted, and gets to work.
Sparks from broken electronics aren't the only kind flying as Sarah works. She and Alejandro have undeniably instant chemistry. But is that enough to combat Sarah's transient nature and the disparate parts of Alejandro's life that he desperately tries to protect her from?
Poorly Wired Circuit is a wonderful read. The relationship between Sarah and Alejandro is believable and their reactions to the situations they find themselves in are understandable. Alejandro's powers are not used by Page as a crutch or a plot device...after that first meeting. Sarah's struggle with settling down is realistic and her growth as a character is well earned and delightful.
That being said, the secondary, action oriented plot, the non-romance focused part doesn't take precedence in the story until halfway through the book. There's little hints of it sprinkled here and there, but it doesn't hit you until later in the story. So if you are expecting an action packed superhero romance, this is not the read for you.
However, if you are looking for a book that is rich in its descriptions with a sucker punch second act, Poorly Wired Circuit should earn your steel of approval.

The hero looked around the alley and startled as they saw two amber eyes staring right back at them. They cautiously backed away, hoping that the villain would at least give them a chance to explain.
"I've been waiting." The low rumble of the villain's voice brought goosebumps on the hero's arms. They were truly in trouble. The villain's usual jovial mood and happy demeanor were nowhere to be seen.
Oh no, they were truly in trouble.
"Look, I-" The hero fumbled, wringing their fingers nervously. "I know I messed up. It was just too nerve-wracking. Going against my mentor...I tried but honestly the pressure caught up to me. I was thinking that I was all alone but I was still trying, but then the media showed up which meant it was live and everyone was-"
"How is your leg?"
"Huh?" The hero stopped blabbering and looked at villain's face. The villain's face did not give away any signs of anger but it almost seemed...worried? No, the shadows from the street lights must be messing up villain's face.
"Your leg. I watched the broadcast and you took a terrible fall. Let me look at it."
The hero hurriedly stepped back as the villain reached for their leg. Was this some other kind of punishment for messing up? The hero had often heard rumors of the villain's brutal methods. Was this one of the tortures?
"Hero" The Hero stilled, shaking in fear as the Villain stood in front of them, daring them to take another step. They flinched as the villain bent down to observe their leg. They felt a warm hand rest on their knee. Oh lord, were they going to snap their knee?
The hero relaxed as they felt warmth seep into their leg from villain's palm. Right, they had heard about villain's ability to heal. The warmth seemed to be pressing a comforting hand to their back as if beckoning them to take rest.
The hero felt their body hit the ground but felt no pain. No, they felt as if they were in heaven, floating through clouds while angels sang in their ears.
One such angel looked down at them and shook their head. They ruffled hero's hair and whispered, "What am I supposed to do with you?" The angel was truly beautiful.
Oh, the hero must be in some kind of trouble.
