✩🦸‍♂️💜Review:
Where have superhero romance novels been all my life?!?
I thoroughly enjoyed this new genre of writing that Zapata explored in ”When Gracie Met the Grump.” It was really easy to become fully immersed in the fictional world she created because it is modeled after our own with the only difference being the presence of superheroes. As a huge Marvel and DC Comics fan, I was immediately intrigued by the Trinity, the Zapata equivalent of the Avengers and the Justice League. Gracie’s interactions with The Defender after he crash lands in her yard slowly reveal bits and pieces surrounding the Trinity’s relation to mankind and each other, their unique abilities, and the thinking behind who they choose to save. Zapata’s choice to withhold information until the very last moment maintained a sense of mystery that kept me engaged to the very last page.
Aside from the superheroes, another aspect I loved about the book was the relationship development between Gracie and The Defender. The two start out as strangers and quickly become “temporary friends” when they are kidnapped by the cartel. With The Defender out of commission, Gracie prioritizes his needs over her own to nurture him back to health and increase their chances of escape. Gracie’s willingness to care for him despite her precarious situation is what ultimately convinces The Defender to let down his walls and let her be “best friend number 20” (in actuality, she holds the number 1 spot).
While he still gives Gracie a hard time on occasion with his grouchiness, The Defender proves to be a big softie by the novel’s end. I love how protective he is of Gracie, how he goes above and beyond to ensure she feels safe, and how he finds ways to make her dreams come true after living such a sheltered life. Most of all I love how Zapata took her time establishing the intricacies and depth of their friendship before gradually delving into their romantic relationship.

When Gracie Met the Grump by Mariana Zapata - blurrypetals review
originally posted nov. 27, 2024 - ★★☆☆☆
Mariana...what were we honestly going for here? This was kind of a mess, and the slow burn didn't even work for me. The slow burn didn't work! In a Mariana Zapata book!
This was unbelievably weird and boring. I can appreciate that Zapata tried something different by trying out the superhero angle, but it simply did not work for me, partially because everything else about this story was exactly the same as every other Mariana Zapata novel: it's got a grumpy male love interest and a sunshine female protagonist forced into proximity of each other, they fall in love but don't acknowledge it until the very end because the girl believes there's no way he could possibly like her.
And Zapata has done these tropes well before! The Wall of Winnipeg and Me is one of my all-time favorite books and it has the exact same tropes as these. I think I'm just getting tired of Zapata writing the exact same kind of thing over and over again with the exact same main characters who act the exact same way...it's way past novel and into annoying by now. I can't even tell her last 3 female main characters apart from one another, they're all the same person.
Then on top of it all, with the elements where she did branch out, you can almost see how uncomfortable and uninspired Zapata was while writing it. It almost feels like she did this on a dare after watching Invincible and wanting to fuck Omni-Man the whole time for some reason. It was so rough, so unimaginative.
I also mentioned this in my review for The Best Thing but she vastly overuses the word "fucking" as an adjective in this book again. It got on my nerves so fucking badly this time around. I know she wasn't always like this, but it makes me genuinely wonder what her word count would be if she wasn't allowed to swear. She needs a much better editor, please. I am not someone who minds cursing, really, but it was the sheer abundance that got so badly on my nerves.
This is easily my least favorite book of hers. I know she can do better, she has done better, but with this book, she tried pushing herself out of her comfort zone and instead was so clearly uncomfortable with it that she did the exact same thing she always does. I have a suggestion for the next one, Mariana: maybe the girl could be the grumpy one for once, if you have to write the same damn trope over and over again. My god.

Do you have any book recs for romance or romantasy for someone who just can’t get over the post fourth wing reading slump? (and who has read basically everything on ao3 and absolutely loves the masterpiece that is sitq) 🥰
A lot of people move on to Sarah J. Maas and really love it! I don’t think they’re quite the same vibe as FW, but similar enough! A Court of Thorns and Roses is her most popular series, but Throne of Glass is my personal favorite (and the only one of her three series that’s completed).
I also love The Serpent & the Wings of Night (Carissa Broadbent), One Dark Window (Rachel Gillig), and A Darker Shade of Magic (VE Schwab). The Coven by Harper L. Woods is more paranormal/dark romance but I really liked the morally gray MMC. I just finished The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen and liked it pretty well, too! For cozier romance, I really liked Emily Wilde’s Encylopaedia of Faeries.
If you’re into YA, an oooold favorite (like, 90s/early 2000s lol) is the Night World series by LJ Smith. It’s been a while since I read them all so maybe they don’t all hold up as well as I remember, but they’re soulmate tropes, interconnected standalones in the same world. And they’re quick and easy reads.
As for contemporary romance, some of my favorites are Love, Theoretically (Ali Hazelwood), The Dead Romantics (Ashley Poston) and You With a View (Jessica Joyce). Mariana Zapata writes veryyyy slow burn romance, but I’ve only read From Lukov With Love and When Gracie Met the Grump (and liked them both).
And for good measure, a few books I haven’t read yet but have heard good things about and plan to get to by the end of the year: The Crimson Moth (or Heartless Hunter, depending on where you are I think?), The Courting of Bristol Keats, and The Book of Azrael.
Thank you!!! 🥹🫶🏻

Some people say that the opposite of love is fear. But the truth was, without fear, there can’t be love. If you can’t worry about losing something you find precious, it probably isn’t all that valuable to you in the first place.
