#supergirl redesign

I actually really adore Supergirl, and it's been so long since the last time I've drawn her. This was a little re-design for fun, and I'm so pleased with how it turned out!

Like Superman's trunks, I've gone back and forth on whether I like the idea of the skirt on her costume, and I think I have landed on digging it. I love that she goes into battle looking cute and kicking ass in a skirt.

As a juvenile being of pure energy, Karazor-El spent most of her days downloading her education from a neural node. Krypton was a cold and sterile place, without a lot of warmth or affection. Still, her parents mustered up enough paternal concern to send her away in their only experimental stasis rocket, saving her from their planet’s destruction. Intended to go to Earth like her cousin, Kal-El, a miscalculation resulted in her only arriving and awakening years later, when he had already grown and taken the form of a human. Fortunately, this left him in the perfect position to help her get acclimated to her new life.

At first Karazor was bewildered, and even a little bit disgusted, at the strange and primitive world she was to make her home. Under her cousin’s tutelage, however, she soon began to see the beauty in humanity. She admired their messy yet simple lives, their laughter, their joy, and above all, their love for one another. Eventually, she decided to use Superman’s old birthing matrix to take on human form herself. Now she lives among the humans as Kara Kent, and fights crime as Superman’s sidekick, Supergirl.

Kara still has a lot of trouble navigating emotions and social interaction. She can come across as borderline robotic, not to mention her almost childlike naivete (although in terms of scientific knowledge she is one of the smartest people on the planet). Still, she strives to be as righteous a hero as her cousin is, protecting her adopted home from ever experiencing the sorrow and pain of her old one. And for the most part, she succeeds!... though her loving yet exasperated cousin might say she’s still got a few kinks to work out.
