Is she Lucy Westenra, or is she just a vessel for the writer's barely disguised fantasy of a women being punished for her promiscuity? Is she really"Bram Stoker's" Lucy Westenra: a naive, innocent 19 year old, with a cheery personality and a bright future ahead of her? Or has the writer instead just slapped her name on an OC that behaves nothing like her, and- with none of the grace or decorum that Lucy's tragically short story deserves- sexualized her slow and agonising death as much as possible, whilst very unsubtly doing their best to blame her for being murdered, so that we won't object to her being killed again later in an even more gruesome and sexual manner?
#every dracula adaptation gets every character wrong- but the way Lucy is treated in particular makes my blood boil#she's not stupid for being naive. she's not stupid for fixating on marriage. she's 19. A TEENAGER. she's allowed to be young#of course she doesn't have much life experience! that's why it's so tragic! when she dies we mourn the person she was meant to become#and regardless of however adaptations try to spin it; she did not want to be killed. she wasn't aware of dracula like the other characters#she didn't deliberately let dracula kill her. she didn't ask to be a vampire. she wasn't in love with dracula or anything like that#she died not understanding what was happening to her. she never lost her naivety. and that makes it even more tragic in my opinion#anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk#i think my old dracula hyperfixation is reigniting and i don't have the strength to stop it lmao#lucy westenra#dracula#bram stokers dracula#dracula daily#lit student screams into the void

Look it is very important to me that everyone knows that Sophie is also fucking nuts in the book. Everybody always talks about how absurd Howl in the book but Sophie is right there with him.
She's so determined to be the normal sister that she's just actually convinced herself that the magic she is clearly, visibly, blatantly performing happens to everyone. Just. You know. Not anyone around her. The curse wore off weeks ago and she's just totally sure she's happier as an old woman. Her sisters have initiated some complex long-game tomfoolery to switch lives and Sophie also thinks that this is the most logical choice.
Sophie does not move in with a romantic mythic man who treats her right, she moves in with a runaway doctoral candidate who immediately dates her sister and drags her into his family drama. She and Howl are both so afraid of romantic commitment they accidentally trick themselves into becoming life partners. They kill the witch of the waste mostly on a whim, and they argue about which one of them is more impulsive for doing so the whole time.
#please understand that Miyazaki tones them both down so far they're actually a love story#they seem like sane people rather than college students#but yeah sophie and howl are both balls to the wall in the book. they're insane. they're losing their shit. all the time. everyday#howls moving castle#howl pendragon#sophie hatter

Thinking about the fact that Mabel and Dipper didn't know they had two great uncles.
Yeah they are 12 and at 12 I had a shotty understanding of my family tree- But really? Nobody brought up their great uncle? Stanley? Especially since they'll be staying with his twin brother, Stanford?
Shermie never went to Stan's fake funeral, which to me means the twos relationship was strained on some level. If Shermie is older that means his view of Stan was poisoned in some way, that even as kids they weren't close. If the Shermie is younger then he never even got to meet Stan and all he knew about him was how he failed his family. Hell, people probably barely mentioned Stanley TO Shermie.
The fact that Stan had become a black stain upon the Pines family name makes me so vividly upset. Stanley faked his death and the family just- seemingly decided to strike him from the record. To pretend he didn't existed to spare themselves the sadness and shame.
Stanford and Shermie Pines. The only children worth mentioning of Filbrick and Caryn Pines.
It was never Stanford that was lost to the world. It was Stanley, ever since he had to leave New Jersy- it was always him that had to be struck from the record. Change his name, change his state, change his affiliations, destroy the remains of ghost that was Stanley Pines. Kill him so the family doesn't bring him up, doesn't ask questions, stops asking "Stanford" about his twin.
I just keep thinking about the fact that since the day he made one single mistake all the way up until Ford walks out of that machine- Stanley Pines was killed and did not exist. And Stan himself had no one to blame, he had to play the part in his own demise- He is the only one who ever knew Stanley was alive and has been for decades.
He lives in the multitudes of every personality he's ever taken, all in the hope that he himself can stop being Stanley Pines.
#gravity falls#grunkle stan#stanley pines#STANLEYYYYYY#STANLEY THEY COULD NEVER MAKE ME HATE YOU STANLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#sharky rants#Just. Imagine the fucking shame you have to live with#the shame that you can never be yourself. That anything you were is unwanted and forgotten#The shame of just BEING- Of taking space of- of /breathing-/#Imagine the world; your friend; your family; your colleagues being so ashamed of having known you#that you feel more comfortable with a persona to present.#You feel more comfortable stealing the identity of someone you care for deeply if only to help#If only to feel capable for once. To feel like you belong- Like youre doing something good for once#Imagine the shame that brings you to be comfortable not being yourself for 40 years.#ALL CASE YOU BROKE ONE FUCKING PROJECT??????? COME ON#I mean- the deeprooted shame was started from earlier. He was 'the stupid twin“; 'the troublemaker”; “the cheat and thief”#This was a long time coming#But those werent MISTAKES- The one time he genuinely made a Mistake he lost everything#Like he really mattered so little to the people around him#and he cant really blame them.#My cousin is a genius. Hes smart and academically achieved since I was a baby.#The only thing I had that he didnt was my ability to draw. to be creative. The guy for the longest time had a better social life then me too#I used to get brought to tears seeing his accomplishments- seeing people praise him. The shame lived in me any time I had to see him#The shame that I was the black sheep of the family next to the golden standard for a son- for a student- for a friend.#when I was none of those things#And Im lucky he was my cousin- cause if he was my brother that would have haunted me EVERY DAY rather then once or twice a year#Im better with it now; Im more content with who I am- But trauma dump aside-#I very very very much understand Stans shame in being the stupid one. The unachieved one in a family full of achieved people#the shame thats angry at him for being better. at the family for treating him special. and most of all at yourself that you cant be better#its a visceral feeling that I sadly understand

I CAN USE MY LAPTOP AGAIN
This is my response to the student relations who refused to answer my mails and calls through friday to monday only to just reply with "Go to the IT" and to the IT team who were nowhere to be found during work hours and caused me to waste half my day in campus:
#i understand not wanting to work during weekends#but if you were just going to give a 3 word replay couldn't you do that before I had to contact the head of my department#never use your student mail to get windows 11 guys

getting to know at least one professor is so important. not for networking reasons or whatever but because it makes you feel like their special little henchman & gives you a terrible motivation to impress them and say stuff like "you tell em boss"
#this one goes out to MEG i love you MEG#(<- the humble megalodon)#just kidding . meg is cooler than a megalodon. this sounds like a big claim but i promise it's' true#meg the other students in these class dont understand you like i do. they think youre grumpy and theyre wrong.i will slay them in your hono#they dont kjnow even know about your business-only cat ears.

the thing about some of these emerging problems with like, students using chatgpt to get “facts” that turn out to be completely made up on the spot is that it’s a problem solved as simply as DON’T FUCKING USE CHATGPT. there’s a repeated attitude like we don’t have the CHOICE to disengage from ai, the gig economy, amazon, etc and while that may be true on a certain level, the notion that these things have inextricably wound themselves into our lives to the degree that willingly engaging *directly* with them is impossible to resist is flat out bizarre to anyone who uses them the absolute minimum amount possible. we are not ALL shopping at shein monthly or doordashing a single iced latte every morning! you can and should understand that your actions are your own damn problem!
#someone is gonna jump on me for saying ‘students’ and act like the 15 year olds doing this are just being raised with this in the water and#I UNDERSTAND! BUT! I would really love to help them kick the habit before it becomes something they carry to adulthood and PLENTY OF ADULTS#have picked up the habit at much less impressionable and forgivable ages

one of the things about being an educator is that you hear what parents want their kids to be able to do a lot. they want their kid to be an astronaut or a ballerina or a politician. they want them to get off that damn phone. be better about socializing. stop spending so much time indoors. learn to control their own temper. to just "fucking listen", which means to be obedient.
one of the things i learned in my pedagogy classes is that it's almost always easier to roleplay how you want someone to act. it's almost always easier to explain why a rule exists, rather than simply setting the rule and demanding adherence.
i want my kids to be kind. i want them to ask me what book they should read next, and i want to read that book with them so we can discuss it. i want my kid to be able to tell me hey that hurt my feelings without worrying i'll punish them. i want my kid to be proud of small things and come running up to me to tell me about them. i want them to say "nah, i get why this rule exists, but i get to hate it" and know that i don't need them to be grateful-for-the-roof-overhead while washing the dishes. i want them to teach me things. i want them to say - this isn't safe. i'm calling my mom and getting out of this. i want them to hear me apologize when i do fuck up; and i want them to want to come home.
the other day a parent was telling me she didn't understand why her kid "just got so angry." this woman had flown off the handle at me.
my dad - traditional catholic that he is - resents my sentiment of "gentle parenting". he says they'll grow up spoiled, horrible, pretentious. granola, he spits.
i am going to be kind to them. i am going to set the example, i think. and whatever they choose become in the meantime - i'm going to love them for it.
#writeblr#i was doing a lot with high school students. over and over again#other teachers kept asking me what i was doing differently - why the kids listened to me. i am not particularly foreboding#and i have a pretty firm personal policy of never reacting in anger#godhelpme.#i was always kind of taken aback#because in general the kids were pretty easy. i explained i needed to keep everything “PG-13” because this was my workplace#and it was kind of their workplace#too. besides#i love swearing#and since i couldn't swear#neither could they - so if they were going to say “fuck” or become violent#they needed to choose a really specific time#because we only get “the one”.. sure enough - nobody wanted to waste the one very specific “fuck” utterance. kids listened.#i think just because - that rule makes sense. the kids understand that i don't want to be unfair to them#that censorship is stupid#but that i'm under these rules too so like let's ride it out together#also i look young and tbh between me and u nobody wants to make the nice english teacher cry#the way these kids defended me to their friends was really genuinely so heartwarming bc the Grouchy Frat Boy#would be like MISS RAQUEL DOESN'T DESERVE THAT KIND OF AN ATTITUDE BRO DON'T TALK BACK TO HER

Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as “so bland he's tempted to throw salt on himself” and “all he could do is lay around and wait for death” (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on “Shen Yuan isn’t lazy” is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

Neurodivergent podcast-fan culture is being able to wax poetic for hours about the most miniscule of details in any given episode of The Magnus Archives, whilst also having to rely on transcripts to tell me what the sounds i'm hearing in The Magnus Protocol are actually supposed to be and then retrospectively working out what the fuck just happened on my 2nd or 3rd listen
#idk if it's just me but gaining a surface level understanding of the plot of tmagp is taking twice as long as it did with tma#i think it's because i struggle with overlapping sounds- which is purely a me problem i know- but it's still really annoying tbh#if it weren't for the transcripts i probably would've given up on following the wider oiar storyline by now#the magnus protocol#tmagp#tmagp 28#the magnus archives#tma#lit student screams into the void

Be honest, what are your thoughts on appledash? Do you hate it or its more of not a big deal
Not a big deal to me. I like it, I see all the appeals, I just personally like Rarijack more.
#ask me#anon#if you wanna know why i like rarijack more i just think they're a healthier depiction of a domestic and longterm relationship#appledash gives me the vibes of gfs that'll eventually break up#because from s1 to s8 their relationship and communication with each other on serious things never really matures or grows#they were competitive and petty in s1 and they were competitive and petty in s8#arguably worse cuz in that s8 episode their dynamic becomes so toxic they almost cause a student under their care to drown#both of them have a superiority complex that's constantly conflicting with each other and it never really gets resolved#but with rarijack there's a very clear arc of development you can follow in their character#and multiple episodes show how they'll argue and eventually come back together and apologize and communicate and work to better things#you can watch them grow to like and understand each other. in s1 aj scoffs and makes fun of rarity's work in fashion#but in a later season (after some conflict) aj says that she doesn't understand fashion but she knows it means a lot to rarity so it means#a lot to her too. and that's what love is to me. “it didn't mean anything to me until it meant something to you”#it's genuinely really sweet and i'd argue rarijack /feels/ the most romantic out of all the main 6 ships. through arguing they grow closer#which is how it's supposed to be in relationships that last! you argue to work out your interpersonal problems and understand each other#(which is why it's genuinely kinda baffling to me that appledash ended up being canonically married because they never gave me those vibes)#but it really doesn't matter. they're cartoon horses! have fun with them

"Severus was mean to his students."
Ma'am, Severus was a man in his thirties with three jobs, responsible for teaching seven different year groups, grading their assignments and exams, performing his regular teaching duties, working as a spy for Dumbledore (constantly risking his safety and life to infiltrate the inner circle of the most dangerous man in history), working for the Order of the Phoenix, and keeping an eye on a group of reckless brats who spent 24/7 putting themselves in danger because they were incapable of accepting the word “no.” As a result, he constantly had to put himself at risk 24/7 to make sure they didn’t end up dead. And in the midst of all that workplace exploitation, for which he received literally zero incentives or rewards, those same kids, who had him at his wit’s end because he was already drowning in underpaid work, were the ones backtalking him, suspecting him, stalking him to see what he was "up to," or simply challenging him constantly.
I mean, it’s not that I don’t care that Severus’s treatment of his students was questionable—it’s just that I’m 28 years old, with a job, debts to pay, bills to manage, and adult responsibilities. The mere thought of having not one but two extra jobs, on top of all that, which also put my life at risk, and having to deal with the nonsense of a bunch of insufferable kids, honestly gives me major anxiety. So, I can understand why another adult, ten times more overworked than I am and with triple the responsibilities, wouldn’t have the time, patience, or energy to be nice to kids who either just added more work to his plate (Neville) or only contributed to his stress and frustration with their awful attitudes.
Severus wasn’t a poor, innocent soul or a victim, but he was a dysfunctional adult with an overwhelming workload and terrible working conditions who was completely fed up with everything. And honestly, no one can understand that better than other dysfunctional adults with too much work, low pay, and a similar level of frustration with life.
#imagine having three jobs#full of classes#exams or homeworks to check#then having to spy the most dangerous man in the world#then have to put an eye on a little brat who is always putting himself in danger#like you have at most two or three hours of sleep every fucking day#and then you are in class and some student is basically being a mess#i mean#the stress#the anxiety#the anger#i totally can understand#severus snape#pro severus snape#severus snape defende#severus snape fandom#snapedom

"Homeschooling should be banned, it's only ever used by insane conspiracy theorists who think the public school system is run by the devil and doesn't even teach kids basic literacy or social skills and [three paragraph rant that just tells me you've never sat down and talked with a homeschooled person in your life]."
#this isn't a dig at people who were homeschooled by shitty parents#that happens and it's awful#but I see these rants and all I can think is#''you're doing a pretty solid impression of the 'kneejerk aggression towards a system you don't understand' that you claim to be opposing''#yeah if I zero in on the cases of teachers abusing students and kids taking their lives due to bullying#the public school system starts looking pretty fucking bleak too!
