I think that you all should know something about the 21 day pattern in Behavioral psychology Yuan talks about in EP08 of the Unknown-

First of all,this 21 day pattern states that- Twenty-one days of task completion, then voila, a habit is formed.(It's proven false though but People wanted it to be true so much so, however, that the idea began to grow in popularity.)

There are 3 phases in this 21 day theory

Phase 1: THE HONEYMOON

This phase of habit formation is characterized by the feeling of “this is easy.” The honeymoon phase is usually the result of something inspiring.

Phase 2: THE FIGHT THRU

Inspiration fades and reality sets in. A person finds himself struggling with the positive habit completion and old habits seem to be right around the corner. The key to moving to the third phase of habit formation is to win 2 or 3 “fight thru’s.”

Phase 3: SECOND NATURE

Entering second nature is often described by feelings of “getting in the groove.”Once in second nature, the following are 3 common interruptions that will send a person back to the fight thru:

THE DISCOURAGEMENT MONSTER: An individual allows negative results discourage him or her into thinking, “This isn’t working, and there is nothing I can do.”

DISRUPTIONS: An individual experiences significant change to his or her current pattern (e.g., vacations, holidays, illness, weekends).

SEDUCTION OF SUCCESS: An individual begins to focus on positive results and begins to think, “I’m the special one. I have finally figured out how to have great results with not so great process.”

I personally think that they both are in the 'Fight thru' phase.

Some slight angst in the turn of the century au i realized.

1910s was kinda a rough time to be German in america. There was a lot of anti German sentiment in part cause of WWI but also just Germans being associated with beer and alcohol as the prohibition movement picked up and anti immigrant hatred going around.... And there was a history of anti German feelings due to the German empire's imperialism (yes very hypocritical of the US) causing many to feel like Germans were evil. There were even some places in the US where you were not allowed to let your kids speak German in public.

Even hiding his mutation Kurt may not be able to escape being treated with mistrust....

Welcome to 2hell! I made it through first year with awesome grades, and now I’m back and out for blood. The goal for this semester is to regain the little networking ability I had and try some new challenges. My law review application is pending and I’ve drafted cover letters to apply to moots. It’s good to be back.

Project : Disrupt

Week : 27th Nov - 1st Dec

Artist Research : Kevin Kerslake

Kevin Kerslake is a photographer and film maker, most known for directing music videos and films with rock bands and artists such as; Nirvana, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Sonic Youth, and The Smashing Pumpkins. These music videos are memorable for their ‘off the wall’ visuals, that Kerslake commonly includes.

Although his work for Nirvana strikes me the most, as the chaos of the video captures the messiness of the grunge scene.

Below are two separate clips from Nirvana’s music video for ‘Lithium’.

Kerslake used live footage from Nirvana’s concert in Paramount Theatre, Seattle, in 1991. The camerawork differs throughout. In some clips it’s shaky, while in others there’s steady close ups of the musicians’ guitars and face. Some clips are slowed down, while there are also moments of speed in the video.

There’s an intimacy, as it gives the sense that the viewer on stage along side Nirvana.

The footage is layered on top of itself, meaning we see multiple concert clips at once. These disorganised visuals supports Nirvana’s grunge aesthetic.

Kerslake’s directing abilities influences my project for ‘disrupt’, as I’m planning on shooting my own video. In a similar fashion to Kurt Cobain in ‘Lithium’, I want to break the guitar that I made previously. I’m inspired by the way Kerslake takes raw concert footage, and edits it through layering and playing with speed. To create something that reflects Nirvana’s image in rock history.
