Column Jacketing: Types and Benefits Explained
Column jacketing strengthens columns and improves their load-carrying capacity. Engineers add materials around existing columns to boost their strength, stiffness, and durability. This method helps repair and upgrade structures to meet modern safety standards. Jacketing of columns increases their resistance to seismic forces, making buildings safer during earthquakes. It also improves the…

spent some time in r/aromantic today and it's got me thinking that we have got to stop saying, "sorry, i'm aromantic i don't/can't feel that way about you" in response to confessions. number one bc what are you sorry for, but number two bc why do we have to use orientation to get out of an obligation to feel a certain way about somebody? ultimately i think behaving as though we need to justify not being attracted to someone only ends up reinforcing the idea that we need to justify not being attracted to anyone

I think when it comes to studying Jewish history it’s really important to remember that, especially when looking at the medieval and early modern age, regions that were “tolerant” of Jews were not just doing it out of the kindness of their own hearts. Framing it like that is both just sort of fundamentally nonsensical and generally detached from reality. Jews were, for the most part, only ever being “tolerated” because of an economic incentive. It’s because they were actively bolstering the economy and therefore the people in power were materially benefiting from Jewish labor. Tolerance wasn’t a gift, it was an inequitable social contract that could be voided by the social majority at any time they wished, for whatever reason, with very little warning.

for me the "Miguel as a cult leader or the ruling class" readings start to fall apart the second you try and argue for there being actual material based relations between the characters, or being able to successfully segregate the spider society into a very basic upper class/under class (labour force) structure.
because like. you don't accidentally end up with these kinds of power structures. they're function as they do in order for power and material resources to flow a certain way and pool amongst certain groups of people. but trying to apply that to spider society honestly just falls apart for me the second you try interogate that reading.
the key point is miguel doesn't materially benefit at all from the labour of spider society - he IS part of their labour, and the only thing that labour contributes towards is limiting the danger of villians running around. He runs around on missions personally and does what looks like admin work monitoring the Spot, as well as reviewing missions and delegating additional workload to other people as a leader. this is not a guy utterly removed from anything we can try classify as "labour".
Even if you want to argue his "material benefit" (very much stretching the definition lmao) to operating the society is social legitimisation of his own spiderman identity (something he seems to be self conscious of, if exploding at Miles in the train chase seems to be any indication) by virtue of the good he's doing, that starts to fall apart the moment you consider miguel has functionally isolated himself from that structure. in what we're shown, he doesn't engage at all in a casual manner with the wider society. he's holed away in his lab feeling sad and guilty - both emotions atsv takes specific care to portray in a way that highlights their genuine nature, by virtue of him always grieving alone and away from the eyes of others.
The very fact that he doesn't engage in a system he built to help spideys, that he doesn't take advantage of something that can help share the emotional burden he's bearing, forms the basis for the suppressed resentment he offloads onto miles ("And all this time, I have been the only one holding it all together!"). This character feels functionally isolated in his emotional burden BECAUSE he's isolated himself, because he doesn't confide in others. he does not materially benefit from spider society (aka his position as leader is not bound or enforced by something like wages, nor do you get a sense anyone else in the society views him that way) nor does he socially benefit from them, because he's isolated himself from engaging with them.

omegaverse has such a fascinating set of assumptions by the people who consume it and specifically posit it as queer friendly because obviously the first question is queer friendly for who, and in what way? And the answer is almost always friendly for cis people, in a way that approaches gender from a cis perspective— I’ve read some/a lot omegaverse, depending on your definition of a lot, and it often ends up regurgitating the same structures of gendered oppression and bioessentialism that people who write omegaverse argue they are breaking away from. There’s a lot I find interesting about how omegaverse as a kink trope (and one whose origins are founded on junk science to begin with) Does end up exploring gender, but not in the way that its authors argue: the amount of fics that use he/him pronouns for an omega character (lol) but then always refer to said character as a wife/queen/etc., the burgeoning proliferation of omegaverse where someone’s status as an alpha or omega ends up confirming their sex (ie when I once say someone say “the brilliant idea that all omegas have pussies,” pardon the language) leading to a blurring of gender and sex where transness is ultimately unable to exist in any meaningful way (I say this as in: omegaverse in these cases often posits a world where there IS gender-related strife, but also one where the facets that determine gender are both immutable and never questioned, but never need to be), but the fantasy of something “transgressive” and yet familiar remains the main drawing point— your favorite yaoi can now have missionary sex with a pregnancy fantasy! There is also the fact that I’ve seen people often argue that omegaverse exists as a way for (cis) women to depict misogyny and oppression familiar to them in an environment that does not harm them, because now the oppression is targeted on lithe twinks, and I’m sure that’s, to an extent, true? But not to a meaningful extent, when the vast majority of omegaverse fic is porn and when it refuses to interrogate the aspects of the societies depicted that allow it to BE both escapism and exploration. I realize you did not .. like… ask for this essay in your inbox but it’s a topic I find super interesting as someone who is interested in fanfiction trends and also analysis of those trends. Haha
NO I LOVE THIS SHIT. everyone should come into my inbox forever critiquing different aspects of popular escapist fantasy because it's interesting to discuss! "fiction/fanfiction trends and analysis of those trends" is something I'm in discord servers discussing like 24/7 actually lmao
also fully agreed with what you said abt bioessentialism and transgressiveness. omegaverse is also Massively intersexist and relies a LOT on the supposed transgressiveness of bodies with both penises and vaginas in order to sell its fantasy. there's a lot of fetishization of nonstandard bodies wrapped up in there! and of course all held together with the idea that an omega body and an alpha body must exist in certain ways, and interact sexually in certain ways.
imo, it's a way to have the idea of trans, intersex, and gay people, but not actually think meaningfully about how they exist in relation to power structures. sure, everyone is gay, everyone has a body that would likely be considered intersex in our world, but in THAT world, that's just the norm, and a norm mandated by the laws of the universe at that. people are still functionally heterosexual and cisgender and perisex by the norms of the universe. is this progressive? is this really the sort of world that's safe for lgbt people to see themselves in?
i also hate the argument that it's progressive because cisgender women can process their own oppression. firstly, as you said, they don't challenge it generally, but displacing misogynist oppression onto fictional gay men is not progressive either! i have a friend who is a gnc trans gay man and we talk a lot about how fandom stuff, esp omegaverse, makes him feel alienated and fetishized by the same people who claim that it's inclusive of people like him. i think if you're writing fiction ABOUT gay men but not even attempting to consider whether that fiction is something gay men would like to read, you've gone wrong somewhere!
I will say, however, that I do think there are trans people who do like omegaverse. ive seen other nonbinary people call omegaverse "gendery!" but that doesn't mean that it IS doing anything with its gender stuff, or that it's genuinely transgressive. in my opinion, it just means that there are trans people who aren't processing that it's a fantasy of the same power structures that exist in the real world, just reinforced and with the targets shifted. and like... sure, it's nice to see yourself, or something like yourself, treated as the norm in a fictional universe. doesn't mean that it's actually good lol.
(note to all of this: I am a perisex nonbinary lesbian, and I don't feel I'm fully familiar with how this affects intersex people, or gay/trans men. if anybody thinks i'm off base, or even just wants to weigh in, they're welcome to! this is just stuff I've noticed from reading this kind of fanfiction.)

Congrats on the Ribbons, do you get other prizes? Bc I’d expect the dogs to get like an edible ver of a ribbon or so if not like a gift certificate for a dog food brand
Typically no. Clubs provide flat ribbons and rosettes for qualifying runs and placements, but only occasionally does someone sponsor or donate prizes.
Pichael is heavily compensated for her involvement in any and all activities we do. She gets an entire boatload of snacks regardless of performance. This past trial the special treat was 🌟 cheese 🌟 and she was Thrilled. She also got a new octopus toy <3

so I feel like I'll be wrestling with this forever
This pageantry of strike/counterstrike that ensues throughout Nancy Jane Smith’s interrogation betrays a proclivity to imagine political conflict, which is to say “affilial” (meaning, political and institutional) struggles, through filial (meaning, family) frames. Questions of citizenship and state power that would ordinarily be categorized as affilial dilemmas, questions of institutional power, are displaced onto questions that would ordinarily be categorized as filial, questions of family loyalty. The interrogation weaves a tapestry of articulations, “connections, transfers and displacements,” between affilial frames of reference and filial frames of reference in which the stability of the White family becomes hegemonic throughout the interrogation, while questions of political power (Nixon’s war machine and the scourge of capitalism) become secondary, at best. What this framing mobilizes is a deep unconscious saturation and naturalization of White family authority as state authority, wherein “characteristics of the family are projected onto the social environment” in such a way as to allow for “no disproportion between the life of the [White] family and the life of the [state].” (Frank Wilderson, Afropessimism)

“Miguel cheats on Xina and is so callous in his explanation of said act because it comes from a place of self sabotage” is one of those readings where I really like it’s implications and agree it’s plausible for Miguel to do that, but also think it’s harder to textually support.
The difference in Miguel’s reaction between Xina vs how he handles Gabriel is. Incredibly stark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think reading self sabotage here with Xina only really works with the cruelty of mocking Xina as she leaves or making a face at her that doesn’t seem to hint at remorse if you read that self sabotage as being either unconscious, or a deeply suppressed. Which are plausible for the character as I’ve said; but I’d argue aren’t supported within the textual presentation we are offered here into Miguel’s supposed emotional state.
Compare and contrast to the confrontation with Gabriel. Miguel is still being a dick, but it’s not the active aggravation like towards Xina, more a sense of condescending pity.
Tumblr media
Most critically, you have the time to taken to offer small insight into Miguel feeling guilt at Gabriel trying to forgive him and retreating from that. It’s a reaction no one other than Miguel is privy to and hints at that feeling being aggravated and then suppressed. Most notably, it’s just. Not something we see replicated in his interaction with Xina.
Tumblr media
I don’t think any of this particular reading I’m offering here negates the obvious regrets Miguel holds regarding Xina into the future of 2099 though.
Like regardless of whether you choose to read it as active disregard or an unconscious self sabotage (or both), it’s very obvious Miguel holds a lot of regret regarding tarnishing that friendship (and the unspoken love that was present there) and this manifests in one of the most notable ways through the ambiguity to his reaction to Lyla’s confession.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like. You can essentially read quite a plurality into Miguel’s deflection/bemusement here. From his deeply complicated relationship to love and self hatred, to the fact that Xina becomes retroactively intrinsic to Lyla and that aspect offering the scene a completely new dimension, tinged with palpable regret.
I think it’s entirely plausible, given the ambiguity where Miguel’s reaction comes from to argue for that being present within this scene given not only its presentation, but that guilt over Xina is something we see present in Miguel.
#I don’t know if this is anything I’ve just been mulling over it#tldr I like the self sabotage reading and think it’s in character but I have my doubts about it being something you can substantially#evidence in the text#it’s weird because like. I think PAD’s authorial intent of Miguel just being a misogynist here actually makes the most sense w the#way the scene is presented. but because PAD is so allergic to having people criticise Dana the SINGULAR time Miguel verbally condescends#abt Dana is trying to bait Xina’s pride where he essentially implies she’s always been leagues smarter than Dana#which like. okay. but why wouldn’t that pattern of behaviour and thinking manifest literally anywhere else in that relationship#if you’re intending me to read this as a critical aspect to why Miguel is involved w Dana in the first place#(real reason seems to be just. this bizarre aversion 2099 has with actually having the cast react to Dana’s actions as more than#those of a hapless ingenue#) I’d like to be yknow. shown it more????#so you’re just sitting there going why tf was Miguel so needlessly cruel to Xina because you just don’t. imo. get that much of a tangible#establishment of condescension being a cornerstone to Miguel/Dana’s relationship#so ur just like well that was needlessly cruel. and bizarrely so given how palpable Miguel’s regrets are now#so ur just left there w a scene that is structured in such a way as to characterise Miguel as supposedly#being genuinely callous to his ex lover and best friend#BUT because the condescension isn’t reinforced at all beyond that one line#appears like a bizarre one off that hints at deeper if unacknowledged feeling in Miguel#and it’s THAT tension imo between the authorial intent and it not being that well executed that actually provides the most fertile soil#as it were. for the reading that it’s a self sabotage#which again let me be clear I do enjoy and think is plausible#I just think PAD fell ass backwards into creating the circumstances that imply it sbxhxjcjc#tunes talks 2099#long post
