I'm not sure about what you mean with zebras, there's no zebras in the movie.
But this sure was a super charming romp. It was fun, the characters were very likeable, it's pretty quotable, and it even got the US Army seal of approval, which is hilarious when you think about it.
Sure, sometimes it gets a bit too stupid, and there's a couple of cringe-inducing moments in the middle, but the overall result left me with a smile on my face. Just for that I can recommend it.

the boy in striped pajamas: my sentiments
rating: 9.8/10
warnings: spoilers ahead + emotional damage (be prepared)
Tumblr media
this was in my bucket list for quite some time, and i’ve only gone around to watching it a few days ago. to be frank, i’m still recovering, and i’ll probably never truly recover from this drastically touching cinematic masterpiece.
Tumblr media
bruno was the son of an auschwitz’s commandant who moved his family to the countryside for work duties. in my eyes, bruno’s character was so beautifully human. unbothered by the atrocities currently happening, he remains curious and compassionate within his little bubble of innocence. he questions unashamedly, about the strange horrid smell coming from the “farm's” chimneys, (from the burning of jews), about the numbers on shmuel’s so-called pajamas (a jewish boy whom he had befriended).
Tumblr media
unfortunately, purity never sustains in our blood-wrenched world. in the end, bruno’s death was a karmic result of the nazi regime, and his father’s ignorance and failure to protect him. it saddens me deeply knowing he died believing his father was a rightful man. he died thinking he’d find shmuel’s father in the concentration camps. he died so unknowingly. what breaks me the most, was he died gripping the hands of his beloved friend, shmuel, inside that gas chamber. i’m not lying when if i tell you i cried for three hours straight after this movie. it’s infuriating, knowing this wasn’t just made-up, stuff like this has happened, and honestly, they’re still happening! how could anyone let these children be stripped away of their humanity and futures like this? how does ethnic identity completely decide your social mobility? how is it justifiable in any way for genocide to even be worshipped?
Tumblr media
therefore it’s such a provoking thought knowing if we could just entirely eradicate everything we’ve known about something and approach it through our intrinsic nature, perhaps we would've been so much more connected to our roots: to merge into a mere species, the human race. sometimes i wonder if current and past societies removed all the societal structures, the ingrained bigotries and biases within themselves, would racism and exclusion of marginalized groups ever exist in the first place? would i be able to kiss a person without the fear of being discriminated against? would the gender wars between man and woman become an incomprehensible notion? would we be able to finally collectively strive for the common greater good? would the generation of our offspring still have to worry about whether they’re going to be competent enough for the work market? so many questions and none can be answered. so many voices and none were heard. so many potentials, but none fulfilled.
Tumblr media
overall, the film articulately depicts the true horrors of war and the tragic consequences it enforces. every scene was so raw, so full of emotions and authenticity. i would watch this again, probably just to feel something, even if i might be more emotionally damaged from being reminded of the devasting aftermath of bruno and shmuel’s forbidden comradeship.

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS ⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆
Just finished 'The boy in the striped pajamas' and they could at least put like a little warning like 'oh, this book isn't historically accurate at all' . If you are an adult, sure, you know that they couldn't lift up an ELECTRIFIED FENCE or steal from the warehouse. But if you are a kid (and I know that there are a lot of kids out there that have read this novel) or have zero knowledge about concentration camps, I feel that you should at least put like a note or something.
In some points of the novel, all the inaccuracies made me feel like the author was trivializing the pain and suffering of all the prisoners.
Where did Shmuel get all his free time of? And how did Bruno walk like 2 kilometers without being seen by any guard?
Well, I guess the point of the book is to tell all the atrocities from a kids point of view, but...

racing stripes zebra
Tumblr media
Rating: ƱƱ (unsatisfactory)
I saw this movie as an impressionable child and it gave me wildly incorrect ideas about horse racing and the wisdom of going anywhere near a zebra. lets leave the zebras for the savannah where they thrive and focus on the real issues like riding horses

i also think the reason courtney’s arc always gravitates around teams and family and community themes is because stargirl is by nature a social creature; stargirl is created out of courtney’s yearning for community and understanding—something she feels she left in california, something she feels she (courtney whitmore) can’t have anymore, but an alternate version of her (stargirl) might be allowed to. and it’s kind of sad actually because if they’re not shoe-horning her into some romantic relationship, her emotional development over any given arc always follows this pattern where courtney (as courtney) feels like she can’t rely on anybody and everybody relies on her (as stargirl) and always ends with her learning to rely on someone but this narrative cycle also never ends. it repeats forever and ever. this is the only emotional plot they write for her (outside of giving her a love interest, which i could argue is just the same thing in a different font but w/e)
i don’t know when this post got so negatively charged actually i apologize i think it’s fascinating how stargirl is inherently a social creature because she was born of courtney’s need for community but i am also tired of seeing her go through the same emotional developments run after run because there are so many interesting narratives and developments that could be done with her and it feels like every issue and run just goes through the same motions. which yes. that is in fact just what comics are like i suppose. still i’d like to see something new and interesting with her. i think it’s possible that because of her genesis and the inspiration for her as a character there’s a sort of fear to take any risks with her, resulting in this endless loop of same-shoe-different-foot stories
moreover on the relationships arc point i do think it’s interesting how her love interests always fall for stargirl first, and it reinforces this ‘stargirl gets what courtney can’t have’ theme; mainly interesting because courtney sees herself as so enmeshed with stargirl that it’s rarely introspected on in any meaningful capacity and yet it’s so blatantly prevalent throughout her narrative. not to tie it all together in a neat little bow but it’s also because she’s rarely given room to be introspective; between the fear of tarnishing the memory of a real life woman and the inherently socially hungry creature that is stargirl, her arcs and narratives are almost bound to fall into the trap of being more about stargirl’s companions and the people she rescues rather than focusing on developing or even embellishing her as a character in her own right at all

Final Thoughts
So, these past few books I have found myself in a huge reading slump. I have found myself with no motivation to pick up any of the books that I have had on my TBR. It took me far too long to finish the last two books that I have picked up. (At no fault of the books.) Life has been busy and has left me too exhausted to read. #momlife lol
I will be giving this book a 4 out of 5 apples. This is the first young readers book that I have picked up in a long time. The story was very engaging, and the characters were written in a way that would definitely resonate with this book’s target demographic. The characters were simply written in a way that would be easily digestible for young readers; but not too simple where adults couldn’t enjoy the book as well.
I found Bruno to be a very endearing character. His naivety at times was maddening; but this gave us a little insight of how German parents might have shielded their children from much of what was going on at the time. His parents never really addressed with him where they actually were, why they were there, and also what was happening on the other side of that fence. The staff in the house were too afraid to answer Bruno’s questions or even voice how they truly felt for fear that they might find themselves on the other side of that fence. This book did a great job of showing us that hatred is a taught behavior and we all have the chance to choose to teach our children kindness.
I really enjoyed reading the boy in the striped pajamas. In my opinion it is a very important book that everyone should read. It is an easily digestible novel of a very dark period in history that helps open discussions for young readers. I can not wait for my two sons to be old enough to share this book with them.

TIGER STRIPES - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Dark Star Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Zaffan, a carefree and rebellious 12-year-old, faces a life-changing experience as she begins to undergo the physical transformations of puberty. Struggling to maintain normalcy at school, Zaffan grapples with denial and attempts to conceal her changes. However, the situation escalates when her friends confront her, triggering a chain reaction of mass hysteria across the school, with teenage girls collapsing in fits. Amidst the escalating hysteria, a visiting medical officer arrives to address the mysterious occurrences. Believing Zaffan to be the source of the problem, the officer takes drastic measures, performing an exorcism in front of the entire community. Zaffan endures extreme methods that bring her shame and physical pain. Driven to the edge, Zaffan finally decides to unveil her true self, exhibiting her wrath, rage, and beauty, leaving a profound impact on everyone.
REVIEW: In her film TIGER STRIPES, filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu leverages Malaysian myths and folktales she grew up with to create a captivating narrative that intertwines tales of outcasts and monstrous women. The film boldly collides with contemporary culture and explores the struggles of young women seeking individuality and independence in Malaysian society. TIGER STRIPES stands out as an exceptional tale that reinterprets mythology, delivering a fresh and impactful message that will resonate with audiences.
The story of TIGER STRIPES revolves around the tumultuous life of Zaffan, whose wild nature has a profound impact on her home life and school relationships. In contrast to Stephen King's "Carrie White," Zaffan actively rebels against the forces in her life that try to suppress her. It is her untamed nature that draws other girls to her. The onset of her period acts as a catalyst, triggering a literal and figurative transformation that leads to unexpected consequences and ostracism from her peers. Her friends and mother become "the wicked ones," akin to the characters in Cinderella, adding a fairy tale element to the narrative. Beneath the surface, a more sinister force is at play, which Zaffan attempts to conceal. Throughout the story, Zaffan's journey is presented as a vivid nightmare, as she grapples with her emerging nature. The distinct setting and cultural differences from Western culture create a unique and fresh atmosphere. The narrative skillfully balances peer pressure, school life, and Zaffan's home situation, allowing the viewer to empathize with her while also experiencing a sense of horror. Zaffan's mental and physical struggles mirror a traditional hero's quest, with parallels to Irena Gallier's journey in the 1982 film "Cat People." The viewer cannot help but feel compassion for Zaffan's loss of innocence. In order to live authentically, Zaffan embraces her true nature, regardless of the consequences, and accepts her fate. The question remains: Was Zaffan's transformation a result of an external force drawn to her life force or a manifestation of her innate heritage?
Amanda Nell Eu skillfully intertwines comedic moments into her work, maintaining a sense of childhood awe while acknowledging the challenges of adolescence and the transition to adulthood. Certain elements in the story brought to mind Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories for Little Children," evoking a similar sense of wonder and exploration.
In stark contrast to the adolescent protagonists, the adult characters are portrayed as clueless figures of authority. Depicted as bumbling fools or charlatans, they appear to have lost touch with their cultural heritage and the natural world in favor of a few modern, Western conveniences. It is therefore unsurprising that they are ill-prepared to face the challenges posed by Zaffan.
Amanda Nell Eu's artistic vision for the film's aesthetics and pacing is exemplary. Despite the challenges of shooting a genre film largely during the day, she effectively builds on Zaffan's experiences through the use of striking practical effects. Zaffan's full transformation scene is a standout, capturing a sense of Malaysian mythology while maintaining a natural feel. The film's energy is sustained by a brisk editing style that avoids lingering too long on any single shot. Eu skillfully employs a combination of practical and in-camera effects to create numerous shocking moments. Her young actresses' energy and enthusiasm are palpable, adding to the film's overall vitality. Composer Gabber Operandi's intriguing score is used sparingly and often blends seamlessly with the sounds of the forest. The film's cinematography is particularly impressive, with stunning visuals of nature and the forest.
The movie benefits from the captivating performances of first-time actresses Zafreen Zairizal and Deena Ezral. They possess natural talent, imbuing their characters with originality and staying power. Zafreen Zairizal delivers a dynamic and heartfelt performance as Zaffan, showcasing an emotional depth and physical prowess that is a true tour de force. Her classmates also bring a natural touch to their roles, enabling the viewer to intimately connect with their lives. Shaheizy Sam excels as Dr. Rahim, a villain with a touch of Disney-like sleaziness. He creates a character that the audience will love to despise.
TIGER STRIPES is a unique film based on the director's weird sense of humor and her personal traumatic experience during puberty. It transforms body horror and shaming into a positive portrayal of the "monster." Created by a first time feature film director and by two actresses making their acting debut, the film is a delightfully haunting creature feature influenced by Malaysian mythology, folktales, and classic monster movies. It's refreshing to see a filmmaker with a distinct perspective and enthusiasm for the genre. Think “Teen Wolf,” but with spicier girl power! Amanda Nell Eu demonstrates her talent as a filmmaker and leaves me eagerly anticipating her future projects.

I FIINALLY finished Watchdogs stars n stripes (it only took so long cuz id read a chapter a night SOME nights) heres my shortened opinion on the book I personally liked the plot, I thought it was an enjoyable thing to read. HOWEVER IT WAS WRITTEN LIKE HOW I WROTE ESSAYS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL I DONT WANNA EVEN COUNT HOW MANY TIMES IT WENT "(char) said". That was like one of my only major issues was how it was written but for the price I paid for it used and my bar being oh so low for video game books, I got what I expected. I did rlly like the character interactions and again the plot (luv u Scotty). I did feel like some things were rushed a little or could've just been fleshed out a bit more but that didn't bother me that much, I have a running imagination I can fill it in myself Overall I give it a 8.9/10, Would probably actually read it again
