Strictly rant time is very late this week - mostly because I'm annoyed again.
The scoring is so inconsistent - you can not convince me that Ellie's dance deserves 3 tens and Annabel's didn't. The obvious one being that the last lift in their routine definitely went wrong which should've been points off. But the judges have decided she's the Dan of this series and they're determined to overscore her to keep her.
Annabel's dance had me in tears, it had Shirley in tears and the audience too! How it only got 35, with no tens I'm not sure.
The other thing that's annoying is that they clearly want Angela Rippon to get to Blackpool at least which means that even though there are other dancers who are just as if not better than her that will be sent home to get her there.
Adam was so good! I genuinely thought he could be the Chris Ramsey of this year where you're not sure in the beginning but they improve so much and could get to the Semi final if not the final. I'm gutted him and Luba have left because I think they could've done so much more

In preparation for the Seren's Study I am currently banging out like Mozart on a piano, here are all the episode titles and synopses of Odd Squad UK!
The four missing titles will be added when I can find them. Can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks...maybe a few months at worst. Will reblog this post when they're added!

The Assistant
Jing Yuan x GN!Reader
Tw: stalking, death mentions, poisoning, framing for crimes, slavery, injustice, corruption of the judicial system, power imbalance, abuse of power, conspiracy and betrayal, yandere themes
Spoilers to the Luofu/Xianzhou main story
Povtober 2023, Day 23 [Masterlist]
Tumblr media
A personal assistant who got sent over to the Luofu as a "get-well" gift between the Generals, that's who you are, or more like what you are.
Does it sound cliche? Does it feel dehumanizing? Being gifted over between others.. That's the fate of the closest workers between the generals in the alliance.
The strictly confidential informations the assistants are prior to are forever bounding and disposing of those who couldn't take the pression are but everyday matters. You knew what you were signing up for with this salary, hadn't you?
After the incident in the Ambrosial Arbor, the seat of Divine Foresight on the Luofu was a mess, even with Fu Xuan acting as a temporary General and Qingzu doing their best to handle all of the chaotic matters, one couldn't help but see how unruly it truly was.
The bedridden man was sentenced to rest in his private residency and could only lay in bed and watch as everything unfolded, seemingly not worried at all, but not everyone were completely sure the Jing Yuan would really stay in bed, and that's where you come in.
Send to yet another Xianzhou ship this month, this time to take care of the recovering male. The main focus of your job became entertaining the Dozing off General, preventing him from, at best - leaving the bed and at worst - leaving his house.
And soon you found out that this man really liked to tease you. Loved it even, much to your frustration.
Here you were running from one corner to another, with exactly: numerous herbal and fruit teas, a bunch of immortal delights, starchess boards, medicine, tons of snacks, books, some scrolls etc.
But the worst part was, when you thought that he would finally be still, when you closed your eyes, even for a brief rest, the man had already dissapeared, giving you yet another headache.
For a man supposed to be in bed-rest he certainly likes to run around..
You ran in your shoes, their sound reverberating through the whole mansion, looking for a place where the man could be in all the while praying to the Great Arbiter for the days to pass quickly so you could come back to your ususal more mundane duties. More preferably with another general..
Taking care of Jing Yuan is in fact way more lethal than it seems.. If even a hair were about to fall off of his head while under your care.. A shiver had went up your spine at the mere thought of the consequences that would await you, making you run even more faster.
...
The clouds were high on the sky, moving slowly without any rush, the sun was shining nicely and the little breeze was dancing along on the skin.
Long gone were the days where the General has been strictly forbidden from leaving his bed, now that the doctors had started allowing him to move freely within the range of his home.
This was also your most unideal situation. The piercing gaze of Jing Yuan was a force to be reckoned with, even when bedridden but now with him constantly on his feet, it subjected you to way more of his unnerving stares. Look, it's not that staring at you is an uncommon occurence, it's just that the way he seem to see right through you with that unwavering focus!
Every time you looked back, you could see either nothing at all or Jing Yuan doing some mudane things. That really made you think that you were just hallucinating and everything was fine, and it really was.
Until one day, he had asked you to make him a dinner. Which has never happened before, with him asking the cook to prepare the meals all of the previous times. Even the chef himself has seemed surprised, but then for a fraction of a second you could see a "so it is the time" look in his eyes.
You hadn't got any reason to refuse, too tired and not in the mood for arguments after endless hours of running after his whims, you swiftly started preparing the meal without a word. In the middle of the preparations one maid asked you for assistance, which you quickly agreed to after all, helping eachother always pays off, right?
The task was quickly finished and with heartfelt gratitude from the woman you came back to the kitchen, where you finished the meal in literal minutes, and went ahead to prepare the table.
The general is getting better and soon I'll be able to come back, you thought with cheerfullnes, no more feeling uneasy with the General presence and no more additional duties except your usual paperwork.
After you finished all of the preparations and finally went to search for the man, you were surprisingly unable to find him. After hearing a sudden thump sound behind you, as you wanted to turn around all you saw was darkness and then as you were falling out of conciousness you heard some faded voices of the other staff personel.
...
"No, I didn't! I had no idea it was there!"
After waking up you found youself inside the Luofu's Court room. Futile were your tries at defending yourself, all of the evidence was pointing towards you. But what evidence? You truly hadn't done anything!
Sadly the Judges weren't as merciful and the presented evidence indeed was all pointing against you. Worst situation ever, you thought as you silently cursed the mansion personel under your breath and to think you were going out of your way to be kind to them.
Taking the chance to poison the Luofu's General? How could you! - The crowd seemed to scream, their judging snickers and stares piercing through you like the most precise daggers.
No one believed your try at defence, no one also was listening to you explaining the truth - that you were framed, and yet everything fell onto the deaf ears.
But if Jing Yuan has ineed been poisoned then why is he standing in the corner of the room?! Are you the only one seeing him?! As you started to process the thought the verdict has already been set in stone. Your sentence was...
Becoming Jing Yuan's slave?! But that shouldn't happen?! If they believed that you tried to hurt him, why would you ever be allowed to be close with your almost victim! Has the Judges lost their minds?!
Why not death? Was that not the only end for those who betray the trust of their position? Of your position? Being an assistant for Generals is not a piece of cake for Aeon's sake! Besides weren't slaves and slavery frowned upon on the Luofu? Why this out of all the sentences?
The side spectators, the witnesses had also became shaken up to their core! A person trying to murder their leader will get scot off free and be close to him?! Do you want to give them another chance?! Have you lost your mind!?
As the main Judge has started to hit the gavel, the furious crowd has started to dispersed with time, spewing rumors and conspiracy theories along their way out. Looks like the press will be having a field day today..
But only two people were aware of the true nature of that verdict, one had a smug smile, watching with intent eyes from the corner while the other got a pouch filled to the brim. And only a gist of people knowing the truth about the evidence, a secret to be kept forever.
All for the sake of the Luofu! All for the sake of the General..!
Looks like you won't be assigned to anyone else ever again..

My thoughts on Maomao and her parents
Spoilers for Maomao's backstory and maybe for some future instances in the LNs. Also this is not a proper analysis, do not expect much structure, lol
One of the saddest things to me in this story is that Maomao probably craved Fengxian's love until the very end, regardless of what she is saying. After all, who wouldn't want to feel their own mother's love, right? Maomao keeps saying that she doesn't know how to love, however I believe this is simply a coping mechanism for her. We know that she loves Luomen, her sisters, the Granny, even Xiaolan and Loulan (yes, I do think she loved them). Hell, she also has "certain affections" for our beloved red flag, as she herself states in her mind. Yet she doesn't classify any of that as love proper. Instead, she comes back to the cut tip of her pinky and repeats her favorite phrase about how she left that feeling somewhere in the past. There where she also left her mother, who is now just the woman who gave birth to her. Still, she administered Fengxian's medicine time and time again. Still she set up the perfect opportunity for Lakan to find her. Still she danced for her under the night sky with a heavily injured leg. Still she bowed to her remains and played her last game of go for her. I don't think she had it in herself to love the woman who pushed her away, but part of Maomao wanted to love her, I believe. And to be loved back. Granted, Luomen and the women at Verdigris house did their best to raise Maomao, but it wasn't enough to replace what could have been.
If anything, our dear apothecary is probably more frustrated than anything. She doesn't hate her parents, no. I would go as far as to say that she actually feels bad for them ( I mean, who wouldn't). Of course, she would never admit that, which leads to her other coping mechanism, namely her extremely abrasive language when referring to Fengxian and Lakan (come on now, breeding mare and stallion? Girl, chill). She would rather feign indifference, lest she has to confront her feelings, which is her least favorite thing to do, as we know. After all, it's these two people's feelings that got them all to that state. If even such intelligent people could make such a blunder because of feelings, why would she want to feel love or be loved? This is also reflected in the scene where she is telling Jinshi that she wants to be executed with poison. Jinshi answers that he would never execute her. Maomao's answer? It doesn't matter what he wants to do, it only matters if he CAN do it. To me, this is a direct reference to her parents' story. Lakan wanted to be with Fengxian, but couldn't. Fengxian wanted to reach out to him, but couldn't. It all ended in ruin because of that damn feeling called love. Of course, this is also why Maomao just refuses to even consider that she can love (btw, I don't mean strictly one type of love, this is a very vast and complicated feeling with many facets, and I mean all of them here). So she simply claims that she doesn't, yet her actions tell a different story.
Now, I have never been in a similar situation, so I do not claim to know what a person like Maomao would truly think and feel of this. But I think that deep down she wonders what it would have been like to have been loved without being hurt. For her cries to have been met with warmth and not with silence. For her mother to have hugged her instead of having chased her away. And maybe Fengxian wanted the same, but knew that it was not possible. Maybe she was ashamed and disappointed in herself. What good would it be for that child to love her? The child, whose destiny might turn out not too different from her own. Indeed, in the end, no matter what anyone wanted, Fengxian could only become the woman who gave birth to Maomao. And Maomao could only learn to accept that.

Gaze - jayvik fanfic. Spoilers for season 2 act 2 !!
_______
Viktor held the man’s gaze, dimmed out iris’s that sunk into the other’s fear stretched pupils. He thought it ironic really,
and oh so painfully familiar. It wasn’t the first time they had done this dance. Viktor on the precipice of death, his eyes void of any sense of life, and Jayce’s eyes screaming in anger; silent but heavy and begging.
come back to me..
they would sing his refrain.
______________
The first time it happened, Viktor was on the ledge, staring out into the distance. The scientists focus was straining, Irises that dulled and washed across his ill stricken face. His mind was buzzing a chaotic whirl of overlapping thoughts that ricocheted and collided around with meaningless direction.
He didn’t know how to stop the static, and with one shaking foot he stepped closer to the edge.
“Am I interrupting?”
The voice was louder than Viktors thoughts, like a drizzle of rain that washed away the rot festering in the mans mind. He stumbled away from the ledge, twisting around in fright and whipping his head towards the sound aggressively.
Jayce.
Of course it was Jayce.
Their eyes met, Viktors who once shared the same bright innocence and untamed brilliance as Jayce’s, now pooled in twin voids. Empty, dull, hollow.
His partners eyes were different. Large and Wild, colourful. The golden- brown hue dancing over them. Viktor had seen them before, committed them to memory, but he was always fleeting, averting his own gaze as to never over indulge, even as Jayce watched Viktor closely, but now? He couldn’t look away. Jayce’s honey eyes, mixed with Viktors abyss, peering into them was like when the sun mixes into the dark of the night, sunsets swirling through the sky.
Jayce’s eyes widened with that shaking fear, and stepped closer to Viktor.
He didn’t utter a word, he had no need.
His eyes spoke for him.
come back to me..
they sung in refrain.
__________________
The second time it happened Viktor convulsed awake, eyes darting around the dimly lit room, a rising panic that spread soaring heat across his chest. The hospital.
but how did he? His thoughts were cut short, as a deep breathing echoed in his ears, turning to look at the noise, he adjusted his eyes.
Jayce..
this was becoming a habit.
“Jayce?”
Viktors voice shook out in laboured breathing, almost too quiet and foreign, he couldn’t recognise it as his own.
Jayce’s head shot up, body on autopilot he grabbed a hold of Viktors hand.
“Viktor! You’re.. thank god.. you’re ok!”
Bright, wide eyes that glimmered with tears, staring back into the hollow resignation of Viktors own. He shuddered under Jayce’s gaze. Over-analytical pupils darting back and forth. Viktor often wondered what it was Jayce was searching for when they locked eyes, and he smirked to himself, wondering if Jayce saw something in them that Viktor couldn’t. He doesn’t remember how Jayce had managed to move closer to him, but his partner before him sat on his knees beside Viktors hospital bed, never once letting go of the mans weak hand. His other hand was on Viktors cheek, warm and slightly clammy, rubbing small soothing circles on his face. They never once looked away from each other, the silence was deafening and deep across the small room. It was the most they’d ever touched, Viktor tried his hardest to keep Jayce at arms length, to keep their relationship strictly business, friends. And nothing more, but with each passing gaze, eyes lingering, searching for any sort of emotion. It was hard to stay away.
Jayce was weeping now, wet tears spilling from his brown eyes, Viktors brows furrowed, placing his own hand on top of Jayce’s. Wide eyes pleading with the man below him.
Stay with me..
they sung in refrain.
_______________
I guess this is the final time
Viktor sighed. Eyes locked on Jayce’s
but it was different this time.
Jayce’s eyes held the same golden brown colour that Viktor loved, shades of honey that he dreamt about countless times before. He found himself entranced the heat of the mans eyes drew Viktor in, a moth to a flame. Weak and unknowing. Viktor was unsure wether or not he could breathe, but the urge to hold his breath danced upon him. He resented Jayce and his eyes, resented their maddening addictive capabilities. Even now, as Jayce wield his hammer high pointing it directly at Viktor. Eyes fuelled with anger, resentment, hate. Viktor couldn’t look away.
“Jayce”
“Please.. don’t say anything”
Viktor nodded weakly, they had done this dance before, all be it better circumstances. Fear stricken, hungry, wide.
Empty, cold, a void.
Begging to be seen
Begging to be heard
Jayce shuddered at Viktors cold gaze, analysing them intrusively, perhaps he thought if he looked hard enough he would be able to enter Viktors mind.. find out exactly how he thought and felt about Jayce, if there was anything left to feel.
It was different.
Jayce’s eyebrows furrowed, stepping closer slightly, Viktors eyes had light in them. The last time he had seen his partners eyes light up with such wild curiosity was back when they made their first breakthrough with Hextech. This was a different kind of glow,
he could see the Hexcore within Viktors eyes, corrupting, changing yet glowing nonetheless. And Jayce thought it beautiful.
“Jayce…”
Jayce was sobbing now, emotions in a whirlwind, twisting and sinking around his scattered brain. He screamed, activating the hammer. Even the blue light of magic, had corrupted in tendrils of white and green rot. A blinding flash shot throughout the room. Viktor falling backwards and hitting the wall, slumping against it weakly. There was a hole where his heart should have been, before the hexcore changed him, when the only thing it beat for was the man before him. The glow in his eyes disappeared.
He held his gaze on Jayce until he couldn’t no longer.. Jayce let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Goodbye Viktor..”
come back to me..
Viktors eyes would sing his refrain,
but there was no response.

some more detailed thoughts about Venom: The Last Dance
spoilers ahead
Two theories about why we didn't get Toxin from Pat Mulligan even though it was teased at the end of Let There Be Carnage:
First, more likely, the writers just didn't see a way to write Toxin into the script and needed a way out of the corner they painted themselves into.
OR, they wanted to leave one more symbiote "out in the wild" since the others all ended up contained at Roswell, perhaps for use as a future villain, plot, or cameo somewhere. So they split up Toxin and Mulligan without confirming that Toxin died somehow, so they can use him again
(it's also possible that the actor's contract ran out, so they needed to kill off Mulligan in some way but didn't want to get rid of Toxin entirely)
On that note. Green is FUCKING COOL and I love the way they take shape. The serpentine, almost underwater way that they move is beautiful, and really brings us something unique compared to the other, more strictly-humanoid symbiotes we've seen. Wish we could've seen some more long-term things from them
I do love all the other symbiotes they brought in, and how we see both comic symbiotes like Lasher and Agony and a few new ones like Green and Twin
I've seen people theorizing that the tan-colored symbiote is Phage, but it's really not?? That one was like a symbiote-Sandman almost, it was tan with big clublike fists, while Phage is bright orange and has spurs along its back and shoulders. It's okay for it to be a new symbiote, guys. Not everything has to be one-to-one from the comics, especially if they're all gonna get wood-chipped in the end
LOVE that we got Agony, and I especially liked the tie-in with the lightning strike and her reaching out to Sadie like she did her brother
Lasher was probably my favorite of the additional symbiotes, I wish they didn't get wood-chipped. I'm glad Sadie survived but I would've liked to see a more long-term bond from them
The xenophages' design is badass, I love the way they move and the CGI rendering is absolutely amazing. They are VERY cool!
Was not as much a fan of how much they obliterated the new symbiotes, I know that's the point and that they're meant as symbiote hunters but it hurt my soul to see so many new and interesting characters just mutilated over the course of ten minutes. The big fight scene was so cool but I wish more of those characters could come back again rather than being killed off so suddenly
I do think Venom will come back. I know everyone's going to say that, but they set up the "viral shedding" way at the beginning and put it in one of those containment tubes... and then Teddy grabbed the tubes
(plus, even if Teddy ONLY grabbed the Agony tube, we do see the cracked-open tube with the cockroach during the post-credits scene. my theory is that the new Venom will bond with the cockroach, scuttle himself along to the bar guy and bond with him, then get his ass to New York somehow)
now for some non-symbiote related thoughts lol
LOVED the opening scene. I think it's going to be a divisive one because of how much verbal exposition there is, but to me it feels like those first two pages of a comic book before the title splash, where we get those full pages with the yellow exposition boxes to outline the story.
The fight scenes were super fucking cool across the board. Again, very comic book. They're using the symbiotes in a lot of new and inventive ways - the first fight that's mostly tendrils, the river fight where Venom jumps from a fish to a frog to Eddie, all of the new symbiotes we see and how they mesh together to hold off the xenophage. It feels like they give us something new with each Venom movie, and that's something I really appreciate. It's not all scratch-and-bite, there's a lot of creativity there!
I don't know if the casting director did this intentionally, but they've definitely blocked out the theories that Venom and TASM exist in the same universe - either that, or Curt Connors and Martin Moon are just freakishly identical in this universe (both played by Rhys Ivans), which I suppose is a possibility
All in all, very curious to see if they decide to go anywhere else with these movies, give us more of Agony and Knull and see if Venom will in fact come back, or if they'll really just leave things here for now. Either way, I respect it. I think they've set up a lot of neat things with this one and would be intrigued by more, but I also definitely respect the decision to leave things here instead of dragging out the series past its dues.

What We Know About Okyann
(as of the second beta; last updated 8/27/23!)
Kayo Tomiyama, codename Okyann, is a 44 year-old housewife, and family friend of Wonder's who is very talkative. She joins the team as a "Phantom Idol", or cognitive teammate.
Notably, Kayo's design changed drastically between the two betas- in the first beta, this was her appearance:
Tumblr media
Her Japanese voice actress is Atsuko Tanaka.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a text icon appearing for her in the data, and with Kayo being a Phantom Idol, she's likely to be a Confidant of Wonder's eventually.
In the story, Kayo appears on three separate occasions. The first time, she runs into Wonder in front of his house as he's heading to school, and gushes about how he's grown up so handsome since she last saw him, and mentions Wonder's mother. She goes on to talk about how her "Darling" also went to Kokatsu Academy, and mentions the directions to get there. She eventually lets Wonder leave and head to school.
The second time, she comes across Wonder in Shibuya, shortly after he's returned from going to Kiuchi's Palace for the first time. When he asks her about a crafting table (which he needs to make infiltration tools), she mentions there's a secondhand shop in Yongen-Jaya that might have one, and rambles on a bit more before continuing on her way.
The third time is again on Wonder's way to school, where she asks about his health. She fusses over this, and brings up the problem with phantoms, saying she'd have some more peace of mind if she knew he had medicine, recommending Tae Takemi's clinic in Yongen-Jaya to him. After a moment, she admits she doesn't actually know what medicine would help with phantoms, or much about them in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kayo is very friendly and outgoing, seeming to be the type that loves to chat and gossip (even to her friend's son, if he happens to be nearby). She seems attached to her "Darling" (likely a family member, possibly specifically her husband), and mentions them in at least two of the three conversations you have with her in the second beta.
Translated information mentions that she used to be a fashionista when she was younger, and her phantom thief attire and attitude seems to suggest she was specifically a gyaru (or, at the very least, had an interest in gyaru fashion), as Okyann's hairstyle, darkened skin tone, manner of speech, cellphone decoration, and dancing are all directly associated with gyaru.
Tumblr media
Her Persona is Cleodora (based on a water nymph with the gift of prophecy in Greek mythology), and functions as a navigator.
While she doesn't strictly have a melee or ranged weapon as a navigator, P5X does have tools that the navigators use for their abilities, also obtained through the weapon gacha, and hers are flip phones.
There's also some information from the game data that may be spoilers, so I'm putting it under a cut.
A Shadow Kayo 3D model was found in the second beta's data, along with pieces for her Shadow's portraits in both betas' data. It's likely she is a future Palace ruler, though it's unknown when her Palace will come up in-game if so. Her first beta "original design" may actually have been an altered version of her Shadow's model and portraits.
First beta Kayo portrait with the corresponding Shadow version:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shadow Kayo's 3D model:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is possibly her Shadow's more monstrous form also has hints in the data, as there is a "chiyome" battle portrait in both betas' data, and Cleodora was mislabeled as "chiyome" in her own battle portrait in the second beta's data.

If you're seeing this, this means I've finally completed Mario & Luigi Brothership! 🎉🎉🎉
And that also means that as a vet and long standing fan of the series I get to critique it as such! Hooray!!!
I'm going to leave my thoughts under the read more, since I don't feel like dividing up any potential spoilers with non-spoilers, and so that people can read at their leisure. That said:
DISCLAIMER!!! WARNING!!! These are wholly my thoughts and feelings and do not reflect how I think other people should feel! I am not here to debate my opinions on it and I am not here to preach to, make fun of, or force my views onto someone else! This is strictly just to share my experience!!! Basically meaning like... please don't type a mile long paragraph on my post about why you disagree with me or be weird about it and vaguepost. I wont read it and I won't acknowledge inappropriate behaviors towards a simple request. If a comment has either "but" or "except" in it you've already failed.
That out of the way, I know it's a miracle that this series even got a new installment and that a new company is handling it, but if you're going to put "Mario and Luigi" in the title I'm going to judge it just as I would any other installment of the series. Said company allegedly had old developers from Alphadream on the team overseeing the project so its hardly an excuse. I am not this hypercritical when it comes to many other series, just this one and a few others. It stems from a place of extreme passion and love for the game.
Be prepared for the nitpickiest of nitpicks and high praise over the most simple of things! HERE WE GOOOOO!!!
The things I like about the game:
The Charisma. The writing is so freaking cute, the characters are extremely likeable, and even the cutscenes have so much personality. I was so worried it was going to be as stale and tired as Paper Jam was but I was thankfully proven very wrong, and for that I am grateful
The battle plugs are a really fun addition! I adore the variety and freedom to experiment. I was initially very iffy about it because some of the seemed very cheatsy and hand holdy (cough cough easy counter/auto excellent/auto luigi) but I was swayed otherwise with the compromise of it having limited uses and needing to charge back up.
Speaking of. THE BATTLES. OH MY GOD THE BATTLES. The input flows so nicely it doesn't feel delayed anymore (to me at least). The bros moves are fun and badass. I was on the fence because the way the bros attacked are different than in most of the installments, but it grew on me. Heck even the boss battles have their own personality and I love it
Hatch me if you can. OMFG. AS A YOSHI FAN IM EATING SO GOOD. I AM FEASTING. HE LOOKS SO BADASS. IHFHFHSJG but yea I really like that bros move
Also DORRIE. DORRIE IS IN THIS GAME? OH MY GOD YEESSSS.... 🥺💖 I also find it funny that the islanders reacted with very reasonable terror. They're like "OH MY GOD A GIANT FUCKING DINOSAUR STAY AWAY KIDS IT MIGHT EAT YOU" and the bros group is just like "Nah its chill this is our good friend she dont bite" HDHFHGHDS
The reefs are a very cute addition and as an artist I adored Rumbla island with all my heart. I love Maykit and I love Issarock. I love Twistee Island, and Dyode, and auuuughhghgh <3
The enemy designs are freaking amazing and adorable and oiugh 💞💞💞 I love that Capnap made a comeback unironically one of my favorite enemies from DT, and Krode is such a clever dericitive of the Treevil enemy.
Optional expert challenges that are actually difficult??? Yes. YES. YESYESYES. I FEEL HEARD.
Bruuuhgh the little rhythm games make my entire week. I love rhythm games and I love music and I love dance ajhdjajfjs it was appreciated even if it's a very minimal part of the game.
I kinda loved the Shark Bone encounter on Allsand Island? I love enemies that force you to run away. Honestly it gave me a well needed reality check haha, I was getting too confident in my abilities. It was the first and only time I had a game over.
I originally started out disliking the UFO field maneuver in place of the brother's flying twist, but once it got its secondary function I honestly couldn't stay mad at it. It had the same charm and brand of ridiculousness that made me fall in love with the Yokai Watch series so I couldn't help but laugh.
Glohm as a status effect is actually ingenious. I was legitimately thinking to myself "why don't they just do that to the bros and make them ill-cooperative. It would take apart their dynamic entirely". I was pleasantly surprised when it became the case later in the game, and it does just that. Their strength hinges on their bond, so destroy that bond, and you hinder the bros immensely. I genuinely love how genius that is, that's scary. But in a good way. I was slack jawed for a whole two minutes during the fight with Zokket when you're basically pitted up against your Glohm possessed brother.
The main villains are scarily efficient. I know that it's 100% on purpose, but you don't realize just by how much until you think about it. Usually it's normal for the bros and co. to be 1 step behind the antagonists and know exactly what their next move is. But not the Extension Corps. You're almost 5 steps behind them at every moment and you have NO clue what they're doing throughout most of the game. When interrogated about their plans they're literally like "why tf would we tell you" AND I LOVE THAT OMG I LOVE SMART VILLAINS... The trade off is that they have no sense of foresight which is understandable when you act so quickly you don't worry about consequences. as someone who has a villain OC who is absolutely hellbent on saving time and being as efficient as possible, so much so that it influences him to be very opportunistic in nature and utilitarian in terms of strategy, who lacks foresight completely, the rep is very appreciated here.
Speaking of the villains, the main big baddie is... hollly shit. I wasn't expecting some evangelical psyche horror. This is quite a few more echelons above the Dark Star, heck, as much as I like the guy Fawful has NOTHING on Reclusa. Not even the Shroobs were quite as deranged. They were just looking to cultivate. Fawful was just conquering for the sake of getting the adoration he deserved. But nah, Reclusa is hellbent on destroying the world through a slow burning rot as everyone is forced into isolation, into their own little worlds, blissfully unaware of what's happening around them. Forced into a position of helplessness where they are none the wiser. Saying Reclusa is basically a primordial god of sociopathy and isolation isn't even an overstatement. Not for revenge or anything, no, but because of his nature of being the embodiment of hatred skewing his view of an ideal world and forcing that belief onto other people. Hell, he even manipulates the one of the few people that could stand against him by using her care taking nature against her. It basically turns into Persona 5 the Mario game and I am so here for it.
It takes you like 3 tries to actually confront Reclusa just to fight him and almost lose. Once you DO square off, there's like... what, 4-5 different phases? That's crazy to me. Not to mention Reclusa nearly SUCCESSFULLY downed the bros FOR GOOD. the only reason they're alive is because Connie showed up just in the nick of time and that ALMOST DIDNT EVEN WORK because she showed up moments before it would have been too late. All of this happens within the game that Reclusa debuted in and that counts for a lot considering it took Fawful 3 games of buildup to get where he was. But Reclusa did """Die""" in his starring game so minus points for that one chief (/hj)
Holy crap they made it so the normal Magikoopas wear orange to distinguish Kamek. I'm not sure if it was THIS game that made that change, but I've been wanting it for years and it's a trope I hope continues because honestly magic turtle gramps is so underrated and badass.
ALSO HIS INTRO WITH BOWSER IS... CHEFS KISS. I was slackjawed watching that entire cutscene. Offandon Island too, the interaction with Buddy as he runs off, only for you to discover the flag with Bowser's coat of arms... MWAH. Legit made me gasp. He comes in SWINGING.
There's so many animations and so much tiny attention to detail that it's incredible. Legit has me floored as an artist. Even the title screen changes towards the end of the game. if ykyk. Reclusa searching and the screen going 👁️ 🇲 🇱before popping up and laughing at the player.
I appreciate Starlow got more positive limelight this time around. Honestly people misinterpret her so badly. They mistake her love language in the form of playful bullying for malice and its disgustang. She's a bit brash and standoffish at times yeah, but she's gone out of her way to apologize or acknowledge that she was wrong, humbling herself when need be. I blame Paperjam for doing her a massive disservice, the dialogue in that game was SO mishandled. Heck, she still "makes fun of" Luigi by not acknowledging his name. OR. so it would seem at a glance. But when things get serious and someone does get antagonistic towards the bros she acknowledges him by name pretty quickly and jumps to defend him. Showing that YES, THIS IS DONE ON PURPOSE, BUT ITS IN GOOD FUN... And her just waltzing in and visiting Bowser to give him a get better gift as a "friend" while he's still injured, despite the fact that he claims he doesn't like her, is a good reflection of her personality. Having the gal to place a meaty piece of spicy chicken on his head TO HIS FACE so playfully just like "boop!". C'mon thats endearing asf. If you honestly hate her for having a distinct personality you must be really fun at parties.
I love how we get to see more of Bowser's good nature shine through here. He's one of Nintendo's best and most classic villains because he's... not really a villain. He's a conqueror at best. Sure he's selfish and hot tempered. He's a tyrant and goes about getting what he wants the wrong way. But we see in SMRPG and BIS that he's a loyal leader who cares about his minions. In most Mario Party games he doesn't take from someone who has nothing, rather he donates to those in need. We see in this game that he's a loving father, marching straight over to Zokket to beat his ass for kidnapping his kid even though he himself was mortally injured. We see him and his minions actually caring for an island that was in trouble, giving them food and very adamant protection against Zokket's forces. We love to see it.
I love the entirety of the bros get VRd sequence. Like, it's clear from the get-go something is wrong. Through subtle dialogue text you can tell that the bros want to go back to Concordia, and that they aren't happy they're back in the Mushroom Kingdom. NPCs making comments about Concordia and how nice it was, the insistence that you smile for everyone, the urging you to continue forward with the programmed illusion, the manipulation into trying to get you to stay there with them forever. It gets even worse come the second sequence. You go into the castle and it starts all over again. You don't even see the castle's interior. It's planned laziness. laziness in a way I can accept from a development standpoint. They COULD have made the interior of Peach's castle, but they made it so much more freaky with the groundhog day vibes. It also adds to the slightly outdated tech feels. Supposedly Reclusa is ancient, but modern VR can harbor hundreds of massive maps. Reclusa could only muster the one liminal space for hundreds, possibly thousands of individuals. Not to mention its what little of Mario's world Reclusa must have seen given thats where one of the few portals opened. But anyways, the dialogue becomes progressively more stale with each sequence. You can feel Reclusa's impatience in them. They start mentioning Concordia less and less as Reclusa fights it, pushing himself to the point that the simulation starts to break down. NPCs start getting progressively more out of character until you're able to basically activate debug mode and hunt Reclusa down. Even the hidden items felt like a nod to off-map items that just haven't been loaded yet. You corner Reclusa until he's finally had enough and ushers you to enter the castle, where you're met with an empty void, a spiraling red carpet to freedom with the only thing standing in your way being a hollow mirage of you dear princess begging you to stay... I feel like they should have included a game over if you said yes but I digress, absolutely amazing part of the game.
The things I care too much about™:
The pacing is ABYSMAL. And this is coming from someone who enjoyed Dream Team as a slow burner. It takes way too damn long to get the first bros move, and the time between getting each bros move is also wayyy to gd long. There are moments where it feels like there's just. Nothing. There's too much nothing going on. It's monotonous and not in a good way. At the very least, progressing and getting to see the next cutscene or character interaction is enough to keep me engaged... just barely. My ADHD was struggling w this game ngl.
It's way too handholdy. Yeah, a grown adult is griping about a kids game being too easy, whomp whomp. A tale as old as time. And it wouldn't be an issue if they weren't very clearly trying to pander to their original, older audience as well with references and nods to past games. Honestly this is a gripe of mine that isn't exclusive to this game, its happening to a lot of modern games. At the same time it's as simple as adding a difficulty setting towards the beginning of the game that changes some of the functionality. Similar to what Dream Team did. I'm also under the firm belief that kids deserve better. We shouldn't be dumbing down video games. Kids aren't dumb. A game being difficult is so much more rewarding when you finally beat it. Volo's battle as well as Drayton's battle, Gigantamax layers, and 7 star raid dens are some of the most genuine fun I've had in a Pokemon game in a loooong while for that exact reason. Meanwhile, I've still just barely had to buy any items from the store. Get rid of that stupid fucking heal block so I can actually enjoy the charm of getting a back massage. Is that so hard... at the very least I do appreciate the fact that it ramps up in difficulty towards end game and they include the DX Glohm fights.
Not the biggest fan of the choppy animal crossing esque voices? I know for a fact it was definitely due to time constraints because Starlow as well as some of Bowser's minions don't even have anything like that 😭 but tbh they should've kept it simple, like what they did for TTYD remake. It would have been less disjointing. Or at the very least they could have taken the BIS samples and put a reverb over it, even that would have made it better.
I'm... honestly not the biggest fan of the red shell attack being able to hit flying targets. Do I like how quick and smooth it is compared to the green shell? Absolutely, I do, but it could have just as easily been applied to the green shell as well. Heck, I kinda like that it mirrors the respective bros' fighting style. It's meant to add more variety I know, but... that shouldn't be the case. Functionality wise they're supposed to mirror one another. That's how its always been. And for them to need to change the red shell to hit arial foes does more harm than good, because it speaks volumes about just how long it takes to get a new bros move to serve the same purpose. It would have been so nice if the red shell just swept in from the other side of the screen similarly to Luigi's green shell, but on the opposite side.
I don't like the copius amount of nostalgia catering. A little less than half of the bros moves being returning bros. moves from past games make me sad in a mournful sense. The one bros move that should be an exception to this they managed to mess up in my eyes. The returning moves did grow on me a little because they're genuinely fantastic recreations for this game, but I really wish they stuck to making more original bros moves. The ones that DID stem from this game I thought were genuinely outstanding. The amount of references just... it'd be fine if it were few and far in between but it's like a quarter of the game and it makes me wanna vom after a while. It's like trying to forcefeed me copius amounts of bitter sweet sugar.
Why. Why God why, Luigi's select button not the B button. WHY is it the A button. It took be a while to get used to it and even towards the end of the game I STILL fudge the attacks on occasion. Years of muscle memory down the shitter. Nuff said.
THEY TOOK MY FUCKING LEVEL UP ROULETTE BONUS >:( I know it's such a small thing to gripe about but there should be NO REASON that it's gone! It's been there for every other game, so what the eff!!!
I hate that there's no penalty for holding up your hammer forever while defending. This isn't recent, I think it's been a thing since BIS or DT...? I can't remember at the moment. But its always been something I disliked because you can already cheese the jump dodges by pressing both buttons at the same time. Having the hammers break as consequence felt like an appropriate buffer to level it out. They could have just as easily made that a feature of the easy counter plug instead of making it standard.
There's also no penalty to getting surprise attacked from behind in the overworld. Given you can still do the attack of opportunity in the overworld for some extra damage, it feels cheap as hell. You don't get stunned, you don't take damage, nothing. Perhaps the most damning thing is Luigi doesn't even count as an overworld hitbox for you half of the time >:/ a chunk of the time Luigi being run into by an enemy just. Doesn't count because of the jank semi-automation.
Luigi being semi automated is a load of garbage tbh. It messes with the platforming and the flow of things. I honestly want to know how hard it would have been to swap the model's properties. Like have him be connected to Mario normally, and when a section comes up where you need Luigi to branch off, just have him disconnect and do the thing he's deliberately programmed to do, and then have him approach and snap back to Mario when he's done! Him being fully semi automated feels so obstructive for no reason. Esp when you're exploring and Luigi gets caught on something, so you have to backpedal during a very important platform segment because of something beyond your control.
This might actually be a surprising one given I adore the tall green bro but... I. dislike. To put it nicely. The fact that the game is so luigi centric. He deserves his time in the spotlight, but not like this. It feels so shoehorned in like. Dream Team was an exception because it was deliberate and it was the Year of Luigi. It was expected. It's called Mario and Luigi BROTHERship for a reason. It's not "Luigi and Luigi Luigiship". The charm of the Luigi logic wears off quick. It feels so forced to me. Like, we've done silly solutions and hijinks like this in the past, but they always did it together as a team. They put their heads together and came up with a solution. It never was just Luigi's logic, it was the bros logic. Which would make sense, because it's CALLED BROTHERSHIP. ITS ABOUT THE BROTHERS! ITS ABOUT BONDS SHARED WITH EACH OTHER! AUGH!!! I don't want to see the same 10 second cutscene just to watch Luigi push some chubby kid through a hole in the wall when it would be just as charming, if not moreso without it! To this game's credit though, Mario fucking killing a guard on Onandoff Island with a barrel being completely his idea was a refreshing and hilarious change 😭
I hate the fact that there's still no penalty for running away, and in some cases the game even encourages you to do so. On top of making battle skill redundant, it takes away from moments like Allsand Island. When you're practically forced to run away because of the Shark Bones? Even having something as simple as dropping coins as your punishment, which the game puts a lot of emphasis on with rare and expensive items, would be good. As much as I like my fleeing to be involved and engaging, even just the chance to fail alone without doing anything else would be better.
It's good to see the bros ball making a comeback but it... feels horrible to play? It's very slow in the overworld which defeats the purpose it had in Pit. You shouldn't have to wait to get a faster option. However, I'd like to think these are foreshadowing a remake for a certain game that deserves it but... with how sales have been for the game I'm not sure that'll happen soon.
The battles play well enough at the expense of the overworld feeling empty and playing slower. At least half of the time they do, the hitboxes are jank asf. Sometimes the enemy's moves are too merciful, sometimes they're merciless. Some of the timing is dreadfully slow so that the Glohm enemies can have more normally paced attacks that you can actually dodge. The balance is very poor overall.
The fishing kinda sucks. Ngl. I'm someone who adores fishing mini games. I got very excited to see a fishing game in Brothership. I was quickly let down. I sailed across several different seas, interchanged between both bros as well as bait. Hardly any variety in fish like I was promised. And I did this DOZENS of times. Not only does this one feel highly confusing with not much direction, but it's the least engaging fishing mini game I've ever played. Even the cartoon Sims fishing games are more fun. I'm saying this as someone who enjoys chainfishing in PKMN XY. At the very least, it was neat to see it utilized as a side quest tool, but that's not saying much. If there is something unique you can get while fishing I'm not sticking around long enough to find out. The game itself is already 30-50 hours long.
Even with the fast travel that you get for Shipshape backtracking can still be extremely sluggish for much longer travels. It's not too damning, just means I can put my Switch down and focus on something else for about 3 minutes.
Not sure how I feel about the strangely anti anti-social propaganda? I know WHY it was done obviously what with the game being "the power of friendship tm". This is such a minor gripe of mine and I'm absolutely overdramatizing it but I found myself relating to Reclusa in SOME cases. I say some cuz uhhh yeah Reclusa is (purposefully and thematically) a complete sociopath. But his final words being "UGH. People." had me laughing and shouting "SAME". The sentiment that having to worry about other people is just too exhausting had me nodding. That's why I drift towards stronger, more independent people or people who are introverted and reclusive like me. I'm not mad about it I just found it funny.
I wish we saw/got to know more about Gorumbla and the extension corps. Gorumbla has a very mysterious backstory as a character that we just never tap into and the Extenshun Corps is kinda just like...??? why did they join Zokket to begin with? Even in one of the journals Zokket wrote he was like uhhh idk. they will die by my hands tho. It was explicitly stated they just joined for some reason. They weren't created like the other troops. And then after all the trouble they caused they go back on it and help you fight Reclusa before turning a new leaf. So what was. the point?????? HUH. And why do they look drastically different than everyone else? Why does Gorumbla look like he comes from a different world entirely like the bros? So many unanswered questions... And unfortunately I only speak English so I can't read flavor dialogue from other games even if I wanted :(
Adaphne. She's successfully passed Broque and Bedsmith on my disliked characters by a landslide.
Other thoughts and overall opinion:
I started out heavily disliking the game, but I desperately wanted to enjoy it so I stuck with it. Maybe it was because I was still mourning the death of the past gen's developer team. Maybe it was because I had grown oh so slightly resentful towards the series from personal reasons. But regardless I gave it the chance it deserved and I'm glad I did. It's an excellent addition to the series. I'm not going to pretend like its not an attempt to revive the series for future cash grabs. It only happened because of the recent successes of The Mario Movie and the remakes for TTYD and SMRPG. But for what it is, its an absolutely amazing game.
I wish they would have continued development potentially until the release of the next console. Not only would it have given them more time to refine what they were trying to build, but they would have had better hardware to work with. That isn't to say that it doesnt already have a lot, by god it does. I'm actually really impressed with how much content it has. But there were very small details that felt like they wanted to do a lot more with but didnt have time. Overall I want to see the series continue to thrive, but the market for M&L games is niche as is. Traditional RPGs are past their prime time with the ever dwindling attention span. Brothership kinda flopped on release day, so if this series is to see a resurgence... only time will tell. I hope with Christmas on the way it'll see more attention.
Also I know another complaint was that the game has "too much dialogue" and I find that funny. I'm sorry but if you complain about an RPG having too much dialogue you immediately lose all rights to critique it lmaooo "Role-playing" is literally in the name. My gamer in christ do you know, by definition, what that means. 😭
In conclusion If you love saccharine sweet character interactions then the game is for you. Ironically my complaint isn't that there's too much dialogue, its that there's too much in between just to get to the meat and potatoes. A lot of my dislike towards it came from the game having a chronically slow start. It isn't till the near end where you really get into the good stuff. And when it gets good, it gets REALLY good. If you have rampant ADHD like me you might be better off watching a lets play and forming your own opinions, But I encourage you to push on because to say the ending had me sulking is gracious. It had me ugly crying throughout the entire credit sequence.

Absolutely fuck off, there's no way Ellie should have won that. Leighton and Nikita had an almost perfect finale, Bobby and Dianne done so well and didn't make any mistakes and she wins?
I hate it, fuck it.
I'll see you all next year when hopefully I've calmed down
