Ooh fic recs! It's been a minute.

On what should be a routine mission to disable an abandoned Hydra base, Steve is captured by persons unknown. Getting him back should have been the hard part, but that’s just the beginning of a new danger facing the planet.

Summary: Death threats are an unfortunate side-effect of being Tony Stark, so he's learned to ignore them. The problem is, when someone really wants you dead, hiding your head in the sand just kinda exposes your ass. But it's not just Tony's behind on the line. Whoever wants him dead wants him to suffer first, and they're willing to do anything to make that happen. Tony knows there's only one way out. To save Steve, the Avengers, and the general public, Tony has to die. Of course, death isn't always the end, and Tony does what any other self-disrespecting scientist would do: he finds a way to fake his death and avenge his own murder. The trouble is, terrible decisions usually have a terrible price, and this one is no different. Tony has a chance to save the day, but the cost may be more than Tony was ever expecting to pay…

Reasons why I love it: What a cool fucking concept!! Tony would absolutely have a contingency plan that he's worked on for years in advance, in case he ever needs to fake his own death. And the way he does it is absolutely genius, oh my god, the Steel Corpse kicks names and takes ass. I love the villain reveal, and uncovering the motivations behind the threats on Tony's life is really interesting. The identity porn is top notch, and all the angst and grief that the team goes through after presuming that Tony is dead is absolutely heart-wrenching. Don't even get me started on Steve, I'll fucking cry. This fic is beyond amazing, and I highly encourage you to read it, if you haven't already!

For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.

Summary: Being trapped in a horrible world where some things are like home, and some things are terrifyingly not, is bad enough. But when it becomes clear that the people here come in pairs - and unpaired people are a threat - Steve and Tony are forced to pretend that they're a pair too, if they ever want to make it home alive.

Reasons why I love it: Enemies to Lovers at its finest. The concept of a world where everyone exists in bonded pairs is so fucking cool, and Ferret explores it in so many different ways. I love how Steve and Tony - reluctantly at first, later with a nice dash of co-dependency - adapt to this concept, and how it shapes their relationship with each other. I really enjoyed all of the OCs throughout the story. And the whole thing with Fred, oh my god, it's fucking brilliant. Plus, the entire aftermath once they make it back to their own universe is so gripping, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen. This fic is wonderful, and I highly encourage you to read it, if you haven't already!
