July 1987. They can't all be winners: The success of the Keith Giffen/J.M. DeMatteis JUSTICE LEAGUE spawned a variety of spinoffs, some of which worked better than others. Some, like this four-issue DR. FATE miniseries in 1987, were so odd as to defy easy analysis. The mini begins with Nabu, the bodiless, immortal entity who gives Dr. Fate his power, learning that his fellow Lords of Order have decided to abandon the mortal plane to the forces of Chaos, as the body of Fate's human host, Kent Nelson, whom Nabu has kept ageless for almost 50 years, begins to fail. Unwilling to admit defeat or relinquish control, Nabu attempts to groom a new host: a 10-year-old boy named Eric Strauss, magically aged to adulthood and caught between Nabu's manipulations and the sanity-destroying threat of Typhon, a Lord of Chaos who has taken control of Arkham Asylum. However, Nabu hasn't figured on Eric's attachment to his stepmother Linda, who has a role in the destiny of Dr. Fate that neither Nabu nor Typhon has anticipated.

This is primarily a supernatural horror story, and a surreal and sometimes disturbing one — it's not always clear what you're looking at, and there's enough gore, grue, and body horror that you're probably better off not asking! How much of the action is real or hallucinatory is often left ambiguous, including a pointless appearance by Fate's now-former Justice League comrades in #3. The plot, which builds on ideas from an earlier Dr. Fate backup series in THE FLASH in 1982 (which Giffen pencilled, although it was written by Marty Pasko and Steve Gerber), is also disturbing in another way: It hinges on the fact that Linda Strauss is in love with her stepson, and is destined to mystically join with him to form a new, bi-gender Dr. Fate — which might have been a cooler idea if not for the age-gap incest overtones.

Astonishingly, given all that, the miniseries was successful enough to spawn an ongoing series, written for its first two years by DeMatteis with irritatingly cutesy art by Shawn McManus, that played these elements for schticky comedy rather than cosmic horror, infused with a heavy dose of DeMatteis's woolliest mysticism. A subsequent change of direction by William Messner-Loebs (returning Kent and Inza Nelson) was less divisive, but also less interesting, and the book struggled along for another year and a half before expiring. DC had been trying to make Dr. Fate a headliner for a surprisingly long time — even including him in the last round of Super Powers action figures in 1984 — but the ongoing series ended up basically wrecking the character's commercial prospects for a good while, prompting the otherwise inexplicable Jared Stevens big-gold-knife era of the 1990s.

Warframe has quietly become the best free-to-play game on PC

When Digital Extremes first released [Warframe] in 2013, people immediately wrote it off because it was a free-to-play game. "It was a cuss word at the time," creative director Steve Sinclair joked with me when we spoke before the presentation. "No one even wanted to talk about it." Today, Warframe regularly sits in Steam's top 10 most played games just under esports titans like Dota 2 and trendsetters like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. And, as I found out when I reviewed it two months ago, Warframe absolutely deserves every bit of its success.

In an industry saturated with hostility and toxic developer-gamer relationships, it's nice to see Digital Extremes build a franchise off being nice to their audience.

This whole lawsuit with comic creator heirs and families against Marvel reminded me of how the What-If...? show director mentioned that they had pitched an episode with the Rocketeer fighting alongside Cap but that Kevin Feige rejected it.

Not many people know this but The Rocketeer started as a comic created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens (who also helped revive Bettie Page’s career). But even after he passed away, Dave Stevens’ estate retains ownership of his work on the Rocketeer, they can print merch, make new comics and content with the character, make an artist edition of The Rocketeer comic with this being the cover (because no way would Disney let that happen if they had control of the character). I think Walt Disney only has the rights to doing shows and movies about The Rocketeer, I am not sure if  they pay Dave Stevens’ estate when they make something based on his work (they did pay Dave Stevens when the original movie came out because he was involved and was also a co-producer).

That said the recent The Rocketeer kid show acknowledged that it was based on The Rocketeer comic by Dave Stevens so maybe Disney does pay their estate.

So if The Rocketeer was in What-If...? There’s a possibility that Disney would probably have to pay Stevens’ estate which might be why Kevin Feige said no.

But the point of this is that Disney does not have the complete rights to The Rocketeer and that Stevens’ estate gets to profit from Stevens’ creation.

This is what the creators’ estates of the creators and the creators themselves want, they want to be able to make a living of what they made or what their loved ones made. It’s awful how Rocket Raccoon got extremely popular yet his creator, Bill Mantlo, was full of medical bills due to his disability and his brother Mike was unable to help pay for it and had to resort to a Go Fundme. It’s sick how comic creator William Messner-Loebs was homeless and disabled for years meanwhile DC reprinted and profited from his work.

Jack Kirby placed a lot of importance on his family and most of his beef with Marvel and DC was mostly because he needed the money to take care of his family and I’ve no doubt most of the creators who worked for the Big two had their family in mind too.

Going back to the Rocketeer, back when Disney still hadn’t bought Marvel and Dave Stevens started publishing his Rocketeer comic. Marvel sued Dave Stevens for the trademark of The Rocketeer name and it was for the stupidest reason too. Marvel argued that they had a trio of Daredevil villains called “The Rocketeers” that were created before Stevens ever did his character and Stevens spent years of his life and money out of his pocket to fight them. His Rocketeer movie with Disney was even delayed because of Marvel’s lawsuit.

If Marvel was willing to do this to a comic creator then yeah I have zero problems with comic creators and their families suing Marvel and Disney for the complete rights to the characters they made.

And before anyone brings this up yeah I’m aware that Stevens didn’t make his character for Marvel/Disney and that some of the estate and creators that are suing Marvel/Disney did. But considering Marvel did a lot of illegal shit like issue paychecks to their creatives with vouchers on the back saying that the one signing it renounced all rights to whatever they created. Which made it so a creator couldn't sign the paycheck without also signing the voucher.

Again IDGAF that they’re getting their asses sued.

Indie Game Spotlight: RAWMEN

Get ready to eat your heart out with this week’s Indie Game Spotlight. RAWMEN is a light-hearted, soup-slinging, third-person food fighter packed with puns and explosive portions of hot, steamy fun. We are inclined to agree with Steven Messner who says it’s a “multiplayer game where you play a customizable naked man and run around hurling spoonfuls of ramen to defeat your opponents. I feel like I don’t need to communicate the appeal here." So we asked Dustin Mattock and Eric Keshishian of ANIMAL to spill the tea (er…soup) on RAWMEN. Read on!

Rawmen has been likened to Splatoon, but with naked men and soup. Where did this idea come from?

We were at Tsujita Annex here in Los Angeles and came up with an idea for a Ramen-themed video game. The original concept had players serving soup to patrons by chucking it at them from a distance, which would lead to even weirder situations and chaos. We didn’t have the resources to develop clothes, so we stuck with naked character models for our prototype. People enjoyed the comical nudity and we made the joke "Oh, Ramen! We thought you wanted a game about Raw Men." And that’s how the name came about. 

Following the fun of soup flinging and mess-making, we developed a multiplayer battle scenario within the same theme—which proved to be so much more enjoyable! We get asked a lot whether the game is a gimmick built around a pun, but it’s quite the opposite. Gameplay always comes first. We put a lot of effort into creating engaging and satisfying gameplay mechanics as a top priority. The aesthetic, sound design and overall feel are all developed to complement this foodie world.

We drew inspiration from some of our favorite cartoons: Rick and Morty, Adventure Time, Futurama, The Simpsons. We greatly admire the interjection of adult humor and themes in these shows, it creates an entertaining product that’s enjoyed by audiences of all ages. We aim for the same qualities in RAWMEN, with nuances and humorous subtleties sprinkled throughout the world.

What type of gameplay mechanics can we expect?

RAWMEN isn’t just about pure, food flinging chaos. We believe in teamwork, and that comes into play with some of the game modes we’re designing. Our newest addition is “Claim Chowder,” where you and your team battle the opposing team for control of broth-gushing ramen pots that drop randomly across the environment. It’s already a favorite within our community.  

We also have a wild set of random pickups in-game that transform gameplay mechanics on the fly. Each item has unique actions and characteristics that suit various gameplay scenarios. 

Mobility and sliding contribute hugely to the action-packed feel we want players to experience. Jumping, sliding, and performing tricks while flinging food at your friends all make for really fun gameplay. This type of rad skate, or surf, style mobility is a design pillar of our game mechanics, and we hope to reflect that in every game mode we develop.

Do different types of soup in the game have different properties, like more damage, etc.?

Yeah, totally! Right now, there are actually lots of different types of food—Matzo balls, Naruto, and Dim Sum, just to name a few. Each weapon has different properties and effects. Some are extremely volatile and pack an explosive punch, while others may stun or disorient opponents, or even make them scream deliriously.

Weapons aren’t the only means of mischief, though. We have great plans for our utility items as well.  For example, our “Bro Back Mounting Backpack” forces opposing soup saviors to work together and share points as a team, piggybacking straight into Hell’s kitchen together. Utility items like this are distributed randomly around the maps, making encounters dynamic and often leaving players in sticky situations.

What do you hope players will take away from your game?

We'd like players to come away from the game with their friends' pride, a good laugh, and silly conversations. If you walk away from our game with a big smile on your face, chatting with friends about the stupid shit you just saw—even if you hated it—we feel like we’ve succeeded. We hope the passion that has gone into the game translates into fun and laughter for everyone who plays it.

Otra cumbre para Messner y Wielicki

El Premio Princesa de Asturias de los Deportes ha sido este año para dos mitos de la montaña, el italiano Reinhold Messner y el polaco Krzysztof Wielicki, en reconocimiento a toda su carrera. Messner es quizá el mejor alpinista de todos los tiempos y uno de los grandes aventureros del último siglo. Siempre fue un visionario y rompió muchos de los límites de su deporte: fue el primero el subir los 14 “ochomiles” sin oxígeno y el primero en ascender solo al Everest, ha atravesado la Antártida, el desierto de Gobi o Groenlandia a pie, fue parlamentario europeo, es propietario de varios museos en el Tirol, ha escrito decenas de libros…y fue protagonista de uno de los episodios más polémicos en la historia del alpinismo cuando perdió a su hermano en un accidente al intentar escalar la Vertiente Rupal del Naga Parbat (la pared vertical más grande del mundo). Para el que no conozca la historia, aquí tenéis el link a la película dirigida en 2010 por Joseph Vilsmaier.

Por su parte, Wielicki es miembro de la sociedad internacional The Explorers Club y entre otros muchos hitos, consiguió hacer las primeras ascensiones en invierno a tres ochomiles (Everest, Kangchenjunga y Lhotse) o completó la primera ascensión en un solo día al Broad Peak.

Sin duda, ambos son grandes ejemplos de superación. Nuestra más sincera enhorabuena a los dos.
