Peter David had a campaign that ended a while ago, and it saddens me that it has restarted and that he and his wife are struggling so much. Sadly he is not the only comic writer suffering in poverty in their elder years.

reading yj in true publication order is legit insane bc bart was really going into a superhero team after waid, messmer-loebs, and co. pretty much ironed out that despite max being the zen master of speed and everyone’s mentor/uncle-figure… max was not ACTUALLY equipped to be a father. if anything, he shoulda been a weekend caretaker at best, but between him and wally, bart was completely screwed. him joining yj off the heels of max’s repeated failures at connecting with bart just makes so much sense cuz it’s like…. bart learned a LOT under max, but even after 40+ issues together, max still didn’t UNDERSTAND bart because he WAS NOT a good foster parent and he shouldn’t have been a parent at all! and max knows that… helen too. and i suspect bart did too, but he forgave him for it just like he’s forgiven most ppl in his ‘family’ for their transgressions.

bc what choice does bart really have at the end of the day? he’s still a refugee and his mom still can’t bring him home, so he’s got no choice but to make the best out of a shitty situation bc otherwise he’d have to admit that maybe he was better off dead. which is truly heartbreaking when you get to the yj piece of his story bc even the others look down on him and don’t treat him the best all the time. but he loves them anyway, bc what and WHO else does bart allen have left? when you’ve been ousted from your own century AND forced to live with people who’ve made it clear numerous times that they don’t want you there, what else can you do but put on a smile and brave through? you don’t even love yourself, but you love others SO much and willing to sacrifice yourself for it. you didn’t even get a lightning rod until 20+ years AFTER your debut. bart allen, the man that you are

actually the funniest flash character in history is mason trollbridge. he was just some bland carpenter dude. he was wally’s old man best friend. they moved across country together. wally LIVED with him. he had a supervillain son that was never followed up on. he was in almost every issue. then waid took over and he disappeared without a trace and was never heard from again

half-cooked bart analysis!

i think bart’s thought bubbles are pictures instead of words cause if they were words we wouldn’t understand them and they’d be functionally useless.

i think because bart is a different kind of speedster, than wally or barry or jesse or johnny or max or jenni or the crumbs we get of the tornado twins, his thoughts work different. bart was born with his speed. he didn’t get it later in life like the others did. and his speed made everything in him too-fast, and wally fixed the physical, his aging and his body, but that doesn’t change the fact that his mind is still whizzing at uncontrollable & unfathomable speeds. i think he thinks in words, sure, but fast enough that it looks like leaps from point to point and manifest as just pictures, which is the conclusion/cultimation of the thought that we see. which is why i find his pov particularly hard to write—i can’t convey his thoughts in pictures, so i have to find a way to do it in words, but i can’t, just because of how his thinking works. i can never get it down, and it always seems. off to me.

tldr: we get pictures for bart vs the words other spedsters get because his brain physically cannot give us words that are legible to us. if we were given words, they’d make zero sense. hence pictures, which convey clear thought. it’s for our convenience vs it being bart’s entire thought process. + in early impulse, he definitely was thinking and/or feeling A Lot constantly, because he rarely spoke & bart isn’t at all a stationary character unless something is horribly wrong. if nothing external is happening (and there was, he used his speed and had very expressive and often exaggerated body language, but this is in reference to speaking specifically) something serious internal must be.

or as wally put it, the single synapse theory. but i like to puzzle it out anyway.
