“Elena, what’re you doing?” Penelope asks, seeing her daughter pacing the living room.
“Freaking out?” She spat out.
“Why are you freaking out?”
She freezes. “Well…”
Penelope urges her to talk. She eventually does after several seconds of pondering. “You know the first date I told you about a few days ago?”
“Yeah, that’s tonight.”
“Right and I just feel so…nervous.”
“I get that, I remember that feeling. But you have nothing to worry about, baby. Trust me on this, y/n really really likes you so much. Even your abuelita can tell.”
“Of course she can.” Elena cracks a smile, “y/n’s just so…perfect.”
“Good. Because that’s how you should feel about someone you want to be your partner. They should be perfect for you. We all have flaws, we all have different strengths and weaknesses, but your partner should be someone that’s like…made for you. You know what I mean? If it feels right, it feels right. If it doesn’t, you’ll know.”
Elena takes a deep breath and says, “Thanks, mami.”
“Anytime, kiddo.”
“Okay, I’m gonna go get ready.”
“Will you be home by nine p.m.?”
“Yep!” Elena exclaims right as she enters her room to go get changed.
“Okay, have a good time!”
After pondering over several outfit options, Elena finally got changed and left the apartment with everything she needed, and just about enough time to spare.
While sitting on a bench in the park, you saw her walk up to you right on time. When you both locked eyes, she picked up her pace. “I’m sorry, have you been waiting long?”
“Oh, no. No, I just got here literally like, five minutes ago.” You assured,
“Oh, okay.” Elena chuckles, “Good. I uh, brought the snacks. And the mat.”
“And as agreed, I brought us the drinks.”
“Ooh.” She giggles, and you couldn’t help but do the same— while you took the beverages out of from the tote bag. Elena lays the mat on the grass under a shady tree, then you both sat down and just dug into the array of snacks she brought.
You were pretty nervous, and she admitted that she was too, so things got a little awkward and giggly for awhile. “Hm?”
“I asked, if you’ve ever kissed anyone?”
“Please? Me?” She cackles, munching on a cheetos puff.
You squinted, “Yeah, you. Are you telling me, you of all people haven’t had your first kiss?”
“Uh, I think especially as someone who’s spent most of her life in a deep dark closet, nope.” Elana sighs, then laughs a bit.
“Didn’t you date Josh?”
“He wanted to kiss me but honestly? I couldn’t do it. He’s nice, apparently cute, but I just wasn’t feeling it.”
“Oh.” You nodded.
Elena looked over at you, taking a swig of sparkling water as she does, “What about you?”
“Oh, hell no.” You immediately said.
————
“Really? I would’ve thought guys would be all over you.”
“Yeah, well…ya thought wrong, honey.”
She grins, “Okay, sorry.”
“No, no.” You bite back a smile, “Don’t be sorry. We said that we should get to know each other. That’s what we’re doing, huh?”
Elena puts down the can, now gazing right into your eyes. “What?” You ask, mouth stuffed with a few gummy bears.
“I wanna give you a kiss.” Elena reveals quietly. You gulped, exhaling harshly, “You do?”
“Yeah.” She confirms with a nod, shifting slightly so she could face you properly. “Can I kiss you?”
You nodded, dropping the bag of gummies carelessly onto the mat. Smoothly, her hand slide up your cheek, cupping it as her lips met yours for the very first time. You do the same…your hand instinctively found its way to the nape of her neck and that’s where it lingered until the two of you mutually pull away.
You let out a sharp exhale when you’d broken away, in shock that that’d happened. “I really like you.” Elena reveals, “So, can I see you again some time?”
“Oh, yeah.” You nodded, unable to hide the quickly forming smile.
“Okay.” She answers, voice near a squeal, “I’ll text you.”
“Or you could call me?”
“If you’d like that, sure!”
You laughed breathily, totally just crushing on the girl sitting before you.
“So, after this, I could drop you off? If you want?”
“If you want to spend more time with me, just say so.” You joked. She burst out laughing, “I actually do. And as much as I would love for you to sleepover at my place, my abuelita would be all up in our business and my Mom will just freak out.”
“I get it.” You shrug, “I never get privacy at home either.”
Later that evening, Elena drops you off at home. “Thanks for tonight. I had a great time, Elena.” You flashed her a smile.
“Anytime.” Elena mirrors your smile, “Good night, y/n.”
“Good night, Elena. See you again soon.”
