My somewhat silly temporary solution to my monte carlo carpet uprooting itself (and possibly getting uprooted by shrimp):

It's just a stainless steel mesh to hold down the carpet and give it a chance to grow. I'm not yet going as far as to weight it down with anything. It's high propped high enough that shrimp can still crawl underneath it, and the mesh means the monte carlo is still getting plenty of light beneath it. It looks rather silly in the aquarium, but it's fun to watch the shrimp crawl over it as they show up EXTREMELY well.

Hopefully in a few months the monte carlo will bush up and spread beneath it, and end up at a critical mass that the shrimp can't dig up once again.
