05x08 - Steamers
Ted visits the hospital to try to take the statement of a man who was attacked by 'Steamers'. (Idiots who carry knives around and wave them at their victims to harm them/put them in fear of being hurt to steal their belongings)
The Steamers scared the life out of the poor bloke and have left him scarred for life after slicing his face. He doesn't think he would recognise them again as it was so quick but might recognise their voice. Afterwards, Ted heads to Wormwood Scrubs.
Dashers visits a snout and gets a lead on the gang. They're expected to visit a restaurant known for being busy during weekday lunchtimes. The snout doesn't know names but wouldn't tell them even if he did as he's scared of them.
Burnside arranges back up from TSG and 6 Sun Hill undercover officers - 4 in the restaurant and 2 outside. He warns them that it's short notice and refuses to let anyone pose as a waiter because they'd end up dropping plates or tripping over their aprons. "What do you think of the tie?" He asks Dashers. "I'd have to see the suit." "I'm wearing it." Dashers quickly covers with "Great. It's perfect."
Ken is sent to visit an estate to investigate a bad smell from one of the flats. "What sort of bad smell?" "...That's what I want you to find out." Tom sighs. "Go along and have a look - or sniff."
Ted promises to help a prisoner when it comes to his trial if he'll give him the Steamers name. Ricky claims 'Steaming' is for kids and 'people who get off on frightening citizens' and it's not a big return when people see their faces. They've done 6 restaurants and 2 pubs so far. "Your boys aren't doing very well then, are they, Sgt!"
Ken meets the residents who reported the smell. They've just got back from the shops where they'd purchased air fresheners to try and deaden it. There's a handy hole in the window of the flat so Ken leans in to take a sniff and soon regrets it.
Ted asks Ricky about his brother and claims he's about to arrest him as he has a witness. Ricky scoffs and says his brother is 'a good boy' but Ted claims he's getting in with the wrong crowd. Ricky warns Ted not to try to play him for a fool. He won't tell him anything.
Tony, Malcolm and June are amused at getting a free high class meal on the job. Taffy is less amused as he's stuck out in the car!
Jim: Is this what's known in the trade as a 'steak-out'?" 🤣 Mike reminds them that the suspects are known for using blades so to keep their wits about them.
Ken breaks into the flat via the toilet window. He's overwhelmed instantly by the smell. It doesn't take long to find the source - an elderly man has been dead for at least a few days. The division doctor attends and tells Ken. "He's dead. Not that you need me to tell you that. Good day!" and leaves! Ken calls it into the station and asks for him to contact the coroner's department to remove the body.
The restaurant being targeted is called 'La Paradis'' Tony claims that it's not his idea of paradise - with Dashers' only response being to correct his pronunciation! Tony's really not impressed - he can't find anything that interests him on the menu so asks the snooty manager for plain steak and chips. The manager asks if they're going to pay him or will he have to contact the Commissioner's office. June says they'll pay and claim it back through expenses later.
Ken reports that he's found an ID as well as correspondence. He's also found evidence of drug use in the flat and bruises on the body.
Ted tells Tom he doesn't want the dead body job and to assign it to Mike. Unfortunately he has no choice as Mike is at the Steamers job. "That's my case, what are they doing on it without me?" Ted growls. "If Dashwood pulls this off it clears up five of my cases!" he suspects it's Burnside up to his old tricks. Tom stops him and tells him he has to attend as the only CID officer.
"...You sure about that?" Dashers frowns at June's plate, not liking the look of her meal. Amusingly, the manager was polite to June and wished her 'Bon appetit'. He simply glared at Mike. 🤣
Malcolm asks Tony if he likes shellfish. "I don't, why?" he asks as his meal is put in front of him. "Tony, that's prawn cocktail!" "Oh no!"
Outside Taffy is moaning about them getting a free meal and him and JimJim being stuck outside. "Makes you sick, doesn't it!"
By the time Ted arrives, Ken has had to move outside for some fresh air. He explains about the bruising and hasn't yet spoken to any other neighbours. He has found out that 6 squatters used to live there until Sunday when they did a flit in a blue van. He's given all the information to Tom who is following it up. The man doesn't appear to be a user despite drug ephemera found around him so Ken suspects it belonged to the squatters. Ted returns to the station, cheered up that he might have a murder on his hands.
Mike wants to leave when he finishes his meal as there's been no sign of any Steamers. June refuses as she's only just been served her dessert. Mike warns her she'll 'pay the price'.
The next morning, Ted is happy to hear no one showed up at the restaurant. He asks if they're going to return that day. Mike confirms they are, but it'll be the same team plus Frank. Ted accuses him of stepping in his shoes and calls it his case, calling Mike a Grammar School Ponce. Mike reminds him it's an open case that needs solving. "They're mine in that I've dealt with five of them! If anyone's going to get their hands on them, it's going to be me!" He insists that he won't let him or Frank shut him out.
Jim tells Ted that one of the squatters was caught when he returned that night and is in Custody. Tom tells him there's no known form. Ted growls that he wants to know as soon as Burnside gets in - whatever he's doing. The squatter tells Ted that the dead man was a former teacher who lived on the estate. He was lonely and used to come up for a chat and an occasional drink or smoke a bit of weed. That time he arrived and soon after 'made a noise' and collapsed onto the floor. He was already dead so they legged it soon after to avoid getting blamed for it. Ted asks why they didn't call an ambulance and instead left him to decompose. The squatter tells him that he's mad. "So were you - or one of your mates - when you hit him!" The squatter claims that none of them hurt him - he just died. Before he can continue Tom pops his head in to let him know that Frank has arrived and is due to go straight out so he has to talk to him immediately.
June is feeling rough after overdoing the rich food. She doesn't think she's going to be able to do it again, rushing off to the toilet. Later, Viv lets Mike know that June has gone home sick and he arranges for Viv to take her place.
Frank tells Ted that there's no conspiracy, he wasn't there when the information came in so they acted on it whilst the reasonable expectation for a result was there. Anyway, he tells Frank, it wasn't his snout that gave the information so he should have put himself out more. "I'm not taking this lying down." "There are people who think that's your favourite position." Frank drawls, driving off.
Officers take their place again at La Paradis. This time there is more backup from uniform and TSG dotted around the area. Taffy is inside sat with Tony. Mike forces Malcolm to move from Viv's table to go to the bar instead - and to keep off the alcohol. Viv tells Mike she's too nervous to eat so he suggests 'Next time, off duty... when you've got more of an appetite.' "I thought you'd never ask, Mike." Bit of a change from The Chief Super's party when he shot her down in flames. Frank and Jim take their places outside the restaurant.
Ted turns the screws on the squatter who tells him that he and his friends picked the man up as a sign of respect but repeats that he was already dead. He insists no one hit him and the man wasn't a junkie. Ted tells him that they know at least one of the squatters was taking heroin and suggests there was an argument. The squatter claims he returned only to find out if the man had been found. They legged it because they they'd be found with the drugs if they reported his death but he had an attack of conscience. Tom calls Ted out to tell him the results of the post-mortem. The man died from a heart attack. The bruising to his face was because of the position he was left in as the blood pooled in that position. Ted suggests charging him for failure to report a death but Tom doesn't think it's worth it. "I prefer a happy ending, fewer forms to fill in." Tom smiles.
The gang of Steamers arrive at La Paradis and threaten the customers with knives. Mike announces the police presence and one of the Steamers tries to stab him. Viv tries to tackle him and the others pile in and manage to grab a couple. Ted arrives just as Malcolm gets a boot to the face. He runs over and helps him arrest the man. The team wrestle the gang to vehicles as the snooty manager approaches them. "Who's going to pay for all the damage?!"
