Now that the story is finished, it's time for an update:

All mentions of love and dead/death in Purgatory by @zuppizup, colour-coded, in order of occurrence.

(idea of course stolen from here or whatever the original is)

In total there are 99 mentions of dead/death and 62 mentions of love, and this is the distribution over time:

Death could take an early lead with an 8-mention streak and managed to carry that lead across the finish line – not least thanks to the last dozen chapters that upped the stakes and contained some big big feelings.

For both love and dead/death, the very last chapter was the strongest one, with 14 occurences each. Together with chapter 42 (where a 17-mention streak of dead/death started) and chapter 50, this last chapter accounted for 32% of death mentions, while just two chapters – 48 and 52 – contained 34% of all the mentions of love (21 out of 62). The longest love streak, consisting of 8 mentions without any death in between, was also mainly contained in chapter 48.

But, despite being outnumbered, love of course wins, making up the last two occurences. ❤️

I'm glad you asked, because recently there has been some research on this!

And the answer is: Definitely more than they drank water, even though not all water mentions were actually about drinking water, and Rayllum frequently tried to engage in different shower activities.

From the beginning, coffee took a comfortable lead and could usually maintain a share of almost 80% of coffee/water mentions. So far, coffee got mentioned 268 times, water only 81 times (although the 48th chapter reduced the coffee share to 76.8% of coffee/water mentions).

Coffee did also perform without any major hiccups - only four chapters so far (8.3%) did not contain any mention of coffee, and from chapter 5 to chapter 32 there was a 28-chapter streak with at least one coffee mention per chapter. Conversely, 17 chapters (35.4%) did not contain any water.

Working on the final chapter of Zoom-mates. Since I started writing that, Callum’s love of poetry is canon and, considering a bunch of that fic was inspired by Arctic Monkeys' songs, I need to find a way to incorporate the John Cooper Clark poem "I Wanna Be Yours" into the wedding chapter.

We did it guys! Minthara is in the top 100 most mentioned video game characters on Tumblr, sitting comfortably at rank 55!

With Astarion at rank 1 (cause of course), Gale at 5, Shadowheart at 6, Karlach at 8, Lae'zel at 9, Wyll at 12, Halsin at 16, Tav at 19, Gortash at 47, and The Dark Urge at 67. Baldur's Gate 3 is also the most talked about video game on this platform, as well as the 6th most talked about thing on all of Tumblr!

I wish Minthara was higher, but you know what, I'm happy she's on there at all! It is also interesting that she ranks higher than Durge and that Durge is that low on the list. It's also pretty interesting that there is such a discrepancy between Durge and Gortash as Durgetash is also the 67th most talked about ship on the platform. It is quite an achievement that our favorite drow is even on that list at all.

It is all just making me think back to some of the more dejecting AO3 statistics with Minthara almost being a blip, practically a statistical outlier in some ways. Even some insignificant side characters got more attention and adoration than her, or had numbers that would compare to her. But Tumblr is a much bigger platform than AO3, containing a much wider array of topics (including fanfics). So for Baldur's Gate 3 and Minthara to stand out that much is really saying something! Reading these statistics on Tumblr does go to show that one platform does not represent the entire fandom and that AO3 is only a piece of the picture.

113 mentions in total (including 7 instances of calling the readers "lovely" in the chapter notes ☀️) and it looks like love is getting stronger over time, but where lies the majority?

The answer is dead/death, here are the relative frequencies:

Love had a good run, catching up over the course of the story and reaching a high point of 47.9% by chapter 41.

But then chapter 41–43 happened, with 8, 9, and 7 mentions of dead/death, including a 18-mention streak which is probably not surprising for any of the readers (in contrast, the longest love-streak is 7 in chapters 29–32).

Dead/death have a 67 to 46 advantage over love now, and I have little hope for Rayllum that love will prevail when it comes to quantity – but surely they can make up for it with intensity!

(feel free to make other requests, I'm looking for practice projects anyway, but of course I can't promise anything)
