Faye Webster Delivers at Sold-Out Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday Night

Faye Webster – Radio City Music Hall – February 26, 2025
Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Faye Webster may not yet be a household name, but she certainly has been raising her profile by making President Barack Obama’s 2020 favorite-songs list and appearing at a variety of festivals last year, including Bonnaroo, Coachella and Governor’s Ball. Continuing this momentum into 2025, Webster graced NPR’s Tiny Desk stage with a string quartet to embody the inspiration for her fifth studio album, Underdressed at the Symphony. While it would have been intriguing to see her perform at Lincoln Center, she instead took the stage at the equally iconic Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday night for a sold-out show.

With an oversize T-shirt hung above the stage and laundry machines lined across, Webster arrived backlit by a spotlight for “But Not Kiss.” That T-shirt served as a focal point for imagery to supplement each song. Oldie but goodie “Right Side of My Neck,” off 2019s Atlanta Millionaires Club, drew one of many infectious sing-alongs, while Matt “Pistol” Stoessel took deft command of the pedal steel. Webster had just a few words with a simple “What’s up, New York City?” and otherwise was focused on her music.

Emblazoned in red lights, “A Dream with a Baseball Player” enraptured the hall as saxophonist Annie Leeth blew warm, buttery tones. Webster discarded her blazer for the sullenly confessional “Jonny,” and the upbeat, rocking “Lego Ring” put a stamp on the set as drummer Charles Garner remained to say thanks and goodnight. The singer would return with her best friend and bassist, Noor Khan, for the Auto-Tuned “Feeling Good Today,” before the full band rejoined and concluded the show with “Kingston.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

Once upon a time at a taxi rank
"Once upon a time at a taxi rank", a review of Obett Motaung's 'A Streetcar Named Desiree' at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria, until 24 November 2024.

Do we think that after returning to Gotham, Jason had a major sense of derealization not only because he obviously died and missed a few years of a life, but also because both, LoA and All Caste was a very, very secluded, quiet places. He travelled around, but *still*, most part of his recovery was inside the very bubble-wrapped places hidden from the rest of the world.
And then he returns to Gotham for the first time, and it is huge, loud, buzzing in day and night, and the people pass by him, the world continues its daily life, and he just stands here, overwhelmed. Lost. Not exactly belonging here any more, but also having no other place he belongs to more than this town.
#do I also think Gotham is his comfort town because of how eerily unchanging it is?#like for all mess in this town it never really changes#the same dirty alleys luxury theatres and the building that are on a constant reconstruction#Gotham is weirdly stuck in one state for decades now#and Jason likes it because at least something hasn't changed after he passed away#am I reaching? be honest#jason todd#red hood#batman#dcu#dcu comics#dc universe#batfamily#batfam

So I was reading Siddig's biography on his fan page and it struck me that this guy was a small-gig theatre director in London before he did any acting. And he said he was fully planning to go back to it after any acting gigs because he didn't "trust acting–not for an exotic actor" like him (1990s? So fair). But y'all don't understand how funny this is to me.
Imagine you're desperate stage actor in an equally desperate production with an equally desperate director. You're all working for pennies. It's cool stuff, very free-spirited. But, y'know. Bills. Your director is also stupidly handsome. And apparently he's gone to acting school so it doesn't suprise anyone when he announces that he'll be gone for a few weeks to do a small acting gig. It's chill, the business is tough so good for him. He comes back and fully intends to just continue the pennies-work you've been doing. Then he's like "there's this other gig and the only other person in the running isn't even an actor so I might be cast lmao" and everyone gets a laugh and then he actually gets cast in this miniseries. And you're like 'damn my director is landing some acting on the side, if these huge brown eyes get snatched up we don't have a director anymore' and THEN
this BITCH get's talent-scouted by some dude from some hotshot American production company and everyone has heard of Paramount Television so next thing you know your director is throwing a farewell party with cheap cake and everyone's making jokes about how he'll be earning big bucks for a season or two and he better buy them better cake when he comes back because HE'S ALWAYS PLANNED ON COMING BACK
and for the next six years you watch your director slash mensware seller (he also takes shifts at the local bar) who lived off welfare like all of you did slide into The Star Trek Collective and prance around the screen in a tight little suit with blue shoulder pads. And sign autographs at conventions. There's even a fan magazine.
So what I'm asking is at what point was someone like "we should probably hire a new director"
#but maybe this is super common in london theatre circles#maybe it was just “have you heard of Siddig lately?” “Idk I think he's in the States” “that's nice”#bizarre lifestyle my dude#i love it#star trek ds9#deep space nine#ds9#ds9 textposts#shitposts#julian bashir#garashir#alexander siddig#siddig el fadil

you know the thing about The Menu (2022) is that so many people came out of it being like "haha eat the rich" and yeah, sure, but really the chef's issue wasn't with the rich people, I mean he hated them and wanted them dead yes, but his issue was that he had let the world of ambition take him so far from the joy of cooking that he once felt, from the art that he loved to make, because he let himself chase status and exclusivity, when really he could have been making his art for everyone, at a certain point he did not need to be cooking for rich people he could have found people who appreciated his food because they loved food, he could have leaned into the art he loved instead of the art he was expected to make with the set dressing he was expected to make it in, and that is a critique of capitalism, but it's not an "eat the rich" type critique, it's not just rich people who have had their relationship to art changed by capitalism, we all have in one way or another, think about the phrase "consuming content", we are consuming, not savoring, and what does it mean to be an artist when being an artist means being a content creator, being consumed, and what artistic principles can you really afford to have when you need to make money to live, but what principles will you forget to pick back up when you have the money, how far gone from yourself do you have to be to no longer be able to go back? What does it mean when you haven't cooked a burger for yourself, for your friends, for someone who loves a burger, because you're always, only cooking for those who can afford you? What do you cook for yourself? Do you savor it? What art do you make when no one's watching? Can you still make art when no one's watching?
but the other thing about The Menu (2022) is that they literally don't eat the rich people. Look at me. They do not eat the rich people they are all burned alive, guests and staff, and that's Different
#mary emma talks#the menu#the menu 2022#you might think from this that I recently rewatched the menu but actually i just saw one gifset and went into a fugue state#so if any of this is wrong remember it's based on me watching it in the theatre which was what#a year ago? over a year ago?

yes, yes i know edgeworth’s big wet eyes and loser boy personality have captivated us all, but listen. listen.
phoenix wright
phoenix “genuinely unable to reconcile the girl on the stand with the girl he dated for eight months, a cognitive dissonance so profound it’s ultimately explained by them being literally two different people, but which he first sits with for five years and does not talk about at any point to anyone” wright

phoenix “overnight loses his career and reputation and sense of identity while gaining an adopted, probably pretty traumatized eight-year-old daughter, and rather than leaning on his friends for help, or getting therapy, or taking any time to process any of this, he *checks notes* spends seven years dedicating all his free time and energy to investigating the weird fucking circumstances around it and maintains a friendship with the guy he suspects was behind it all” wright
