OMG I'M DYING FROM THIS. 😂 It's time for a Gen-X deep cut of nerdery.
I'm a big fan of the 1986 TV series Starman, which was a continuation of the 1984 movie with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. IMO it's aged well (both the movie and the show). Good acting, writing, and production values. The TV show is generally family-friendly 80s, so don't expect anything edgy. There's some good social commentary, though.
Why am I telling you this in a Tuvok reblog? Because I first saw Tim Russ as a guest star in a Starman TV episode. When I saw him as Tuvok years later, I said, "Hey, that's Tyrone, the pimp from that one ep of Starman!" Paul (the alien in the TV series) got thrown in jail for double parking and unwittingly arguing with the cop who told him to move, IIRC. Tyrone was his cellmate. He's really funny.
My dayjob beckons, so I'll try to find some screencaps later today.
Tuvok 1D option 1………..? 👉👈 if u want…

SUPER GIANT (1957), aka THE GIANT OF STEEL.
The very first appearance of Japan's first cinematic superhero, Super Giant (aka Starman in the US), released as part one of a serial on July 30, 1957. The second part, Super Giant 2 (aka Super Giant Continues) was released two weeks later, on August 13.
Both chapters were later edited together, dubbed in English, and released to American TV in 1965 as Atomic Rulers of the World. Super Giant was renamed Starman for that film (and its subsequent sequels).
Super Giant was created in response to the American television series Adventures of Superman. That show was so popular in Japan at the time that Emperor Hirohito reportedly wrote Superman actor George Reeves a fan letter.
Super Giant is an artificial being created by the Peace Council of the Emerald Planet, sort of a pre-Star Trek United Federation of Planets. He is constructed of "the strongest steel," which endows him with super-strength and makes him nigh indestructible.
The Peace Council also gave Super Giant the Globe Meter, a device he wears like a watch that allows him to fly through space, detect radiation, speak and understand any language, and disguise himself as an ordinary Earthman.

Physique: Husky Build Height: 5′ 9″ (1.75 m)
Dennis Dirk Blocker (born July 31, 1957-) is an American actor. He earned his first regular TV role on Baa Baa Black Sheep (1976–1978), playing pilot Jerry Bragg. From 2013–2021, he starred as Detective Michael Hitchcock on the Fox/NBC comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His best known film credits include Poltergeist (1982), Starman (1984) and Prince of Darkness (1987).

A cute, bald and cuddly daddy, I think he has developed into a more fuckable daddy than his dad, Dan Blocker of Bonanza fame. What? His father was a big old bear that look like he'd just fuck you and leave. Dirk looks like he’d stay and cuddle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lets see… he was born in Los Angeles, CA, earn his bachelor of arts degree so he could teach K-12. Is married with two children. Honestly I don't even know why I mention it any more. I must be genetically predisposed to only being attracted to straight guys. Still, I can dream.
Tumblr media
RECOMMENDATIONS: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV Series) - Numerous times shirtless. There’s… Johnny! (TV Series) - Open shirt and short shorts. MAS*H (TV Series) - Open shirt.

Having grown up in the 2000's, I must say that 60's and 70's sci-fi was my jam. Haven't watched Classic BG or ST:TOS in years, but I kid you not, I think of them almost every day.
I miss when sci fi was allowed to be goofy and weird and long running, with a lot of daily life plots and silly costumes and fun real sets.
nowadays it's trying so hard to be prestige television, and intelligent, without realizing that the best sci fi could be that AND ridiculous. it's all CGI and brooding and people being sad on sad looking gray planets.
I also dislike how modern sci fi is dystopian this, dystopian that.
you know, farscape is technically a dystopia, but it still let itself be a fun one.
maybe your dystopian sci fi needs puppets.

Absolute Justice (it's hard to be historically accurate when the setting is 40 years later), Part 1: Society
youtube

[All images are owned by DC Comics and Warner Bros-Discovery. Please dont sue me]
[NOTE: All comic images are courtesy of DC Continuity Project unless overwise noted]
This episode is likely a love letter to the heroes who started it all for DC Comics (or, as it was then known, National Publications) and for the most part are all but ignored in movies and TV (Stargirl being the most obvious exception, though that was more a series about what happened after they disbanded) I would love for DC to green-light a movie or series based on these heroes (as opposed to their legacy)!
First, a bit of history…
In World War II, National Publications had a number of super heroes in their various titles after Superman made his debut in 1938’s Action Comics #1. In 1940, National decided to bring many of them together…
Tumblr media
(Thanks to GameSpot)
…forming the Justice Society of America (JSA), dealing with major threats to the United States (they closed the plot hole of “why don’t the JSA just go to Europe and deal with the Nazis?” by giving Hitler a mystical artifact that prevents them from doing so)
Throughout the War Years, kids flocked to newsstands to read the latest adventures of the JSA. However, once the War was won, their popularity dropped off (to the point that Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman were the only National super heroes still regularly in publication) Then the 60s brought out the Silver Age and, eventually, the Multiverse where the JSA was still active.
However, Time Marches On, and it became harder for readers to suspend disbelief that heroes that were active in the 1940s were still vibrant enough to continue fighting crime (especially with Legacy Heroes such as Jade, Obsidian (Green Lantern Alan Scott’s children), Huntress (the daughter of Batman and Catwoman), Power Girl (the Earth-2 version of Supergirl, who debuted about the same time her Earth-1 counterpart did), and Stargirl (the successor to the Star Spangled Kid) fighting alongside the previous generation as adults (or, in Stargirl’s case, late teens). By the time Crisis debuted in 1985, the JSA should have been at least in their 60s.
This made it very difficult to have members of the JSA appear in modern television…unless you changed their history, which brings us to the subject of this review. If you would like to watch it, it’s available on Hulu or behind your favorite paywall.
PREVIOUSLY ON…
Clark has left Smallville for Metropolis and has joined the Daily Planet while protecting the city as the blue and red being known only as “The Blur” (since the writers weren’t allowed to make Clark Superman during the series) Along the way, he has encountered others like him and they have formed a team, with Chloe coordinating them under the moniker “Watchtower”.
However, events transpired that caused the team to disband, though Chloe does her best to keep the team going despite Clark not wanting to be involved.
Now, on with the show!
We open in Metropolis with Chloe calling Clark trying to get him to rejoin the team when the streetlamps around her suddenly go out and she sees…
Tumblr media
…a man with a glowing rod land in front of her. He introduces himself as Sylvester Pemberton.
[HISTORICAL NOTE: Pemberton (AKA the Star Spangled Kid)…
Tumblr media
…was never a member of the JSA during the Golden Age, but was instead a member of the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Due to time travel shenanigans in the 70s, the Kid found himself 30 years out of time. He inherited Starman Ted Knight’s Cosmic Rod and joined the JSA at that time]
Pemberton knows about Chloe’s involvement with the team. He claims to be an ally, but before he can explain what he wants, the temperature suddenly drops. Pemberton tosses her in a dumpster and it is tossed around…
Tumblr media
…and spears of ice penetrate the dumpster! When things calm down and Chloe finally emerges, she sees the dumpster covered in ice and Pemberton dying of extreme frostbite!
Roll the opening credits!
Clark arrives at Metropolis General to check on Chloe as she’s released after being treated to minor frostbite. They then discuss Pemberton. Chloe sees one of the nurses hand a police officer Pemberton’s effects, including his phone, so she gets close enough use her phone to clone the data from his SIM card. Meanwhile, Clark sees a distraught teenage girl crying about Pemberton. Clark tries to comfort her, but she sees his press badge and lashes out at him.
Tumblr media
After she leaves, Clark and Chloe compare notes. Chloe reveals that Pemberton knew she’s Watchtower and describes what she saw from the dumpster.
Chloe then reveals that Pemberton’s last phone call was with someone named Wesley Dodds. She tells Clark to use his contacts at the Daily Planet to find out what he can about Dodds.
Speaking of Dodds, let’s check in on him. We find him asleep in his chair where he dreams Pemberton’s death.
[HISTORICAL NOTE: Wesley Dodds was known as the Sandman (not to be confused with Neil Gaiman’s title about the living embodiment of dreams)…
Tumblr media
…who has no actual powers but wielded a gun that discharged sleeping gas]
He then dons his old costume just as he receives an intruder…who ices up his costume (and likely the person under it)
Back at the team’s headquarters, Oliver Queen (AKA the Green Arrow) makes an appearance (and thus far is the only one to do so since Chloe contacted everyone following her meeting with Pemberton)
Chloe briefs Oliver about Pemberton (and his rather extensive criminal record) and the girl at the hospital: a high school Sophomore from Nebraska named Courtney Whitmore.
Chloe discovers Pemberton’s staff is in police evidence, so she dispatches Oliver to retrieve it.
Meanwhile, Clark has tracked down Wesley Dodds and has arrived at his apartment, but is too late. Dodds was frozen to death the same as Pemberton. On the table, he sees something scrawled in blood:
Tumblr media
Chloe uses her contact at the Medical Examiner’s office (Dr. Emil Hamilton) to get more information on Dodds and Pemberton. The ice pulled from Pemberton’s wounds had human DNA inside.
Emil mentions the note left on Dodds’s table, leaving Chloe to speculate what it means. Chloe goes to help dig up information about the “JSA”.
Meanwhile, in a barren room, we get a first glance at the Big Bad…
Tumblr media
…and his next victim.
Later, Clark and Chloe go through the Planet’s archives…

[HISTORICAL NOTES: Let’s look at the people mentioned in the film, as (with one exception) they are not featured elsewhere in the episode but (with a different exception) were major players within the Justice Society:
Tumblr media
Al Pratt was the diminutive hero known as the Atom. Unlike his Silver Age counterpart, he couldn’t shrink, but he eventually gained atomic powers.
Tumblr media
Ted Grant was known as Wildcat, and mainly was known for using his pugilist training to fight crime. He was responsible for training many heroes, including the Silver Age Black Canary.
Tumblr media
Jay Garrick was the speedster known as the Flash
Tumblr media
Alan Scott was the Green Lantern. Unlike his Silver Age counterparts, his Power Ring was magic-based, not from an alien power source
Tumblr media
(Thanks to writeups.org)
Abigail “Ma” Hunkel was known as the Red Tornado and was mainly used as comic relief. She never officially joined the JSA, but occasionally worked with them.
Carter Hall we’ll discuss shortly.]
I have to wonder how this footage was taken, as Grant was working out in his gym when he was arrested. Did he regularly film his training?
Later, Clark arrives at the address of Carter Hall, a museum inside a brownstone in the middle of Metropolis, only it looks like no one has lived there in some time. As Clark looks around, Hall enters the building and takes an immediate dislike to him.
Suddenly, Clark hears muttering elsewhere in the room coming from a man who introduces himself as Kent Nelson before continuing to mutter to a bag in his hands, so he takes a peek.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, the helmet in the bag twists and stares right at him!
With that, Hall tells Clark he’s overstayed his welcome, so Clark leaves. As Clark leaves, Nelson approaches Hall, saying the helmet thinks Clark can help them, but Hall doesn’t think so.
Meanwhile, Oliver has gotten into police lockup, but Pemberton's staff wasn't there. Where could it have gotten to?
Tumblr media
Yeah, that makes sense.
Oliver confronts Whitmore about stealing the rod, but she immediately swings at him with it.
Oliver attempts to defuse the situation by mentioning that Dodds has also been murdered. However, Nelson appears out of nowhere and vanishes with Whitmore.
Later, Oliver and Chloe go looking for Pemberton’s car. Thanks to a bit of judicious hacking, Chloe discovers his car should be in the alley she and Oliver have entered.
Once they find it (not that hard; how many star-spangled vehicles could there be? Plus it's right in front of Ted Grant’s old gym), Oliver finds a journal in the glove compartment and discovers…
Tumblr media
Well, Pemberton certainly knew a lot about Clark and Chloe! There are also entries for the rest of the team, including their identities.
Meanwhile at the Brownstone, Whitmore begs Hall to do something about whoever killed Pemberton and Dodds.
Tumblr media
Later, Chloe may have tracked down a lead on their frosty killer.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Markent is recovering at Metropolis General psych ward from injuries suffered years ago (or at least that's what the reports say)
[HISTORICAL NOTE: The Icicle was a foe of Green Lantern Alan Scott before joining a group known as the Injustice Society. He was later killed during Crisis]
Tumblr media
Meanwhile at the brownstone, Hall finally decides to get off his duff and tells Nelson it's time to open the bag.
youtube
(Thanks to TheDoctorOfFate)
[HISTORICAL NOTES:
Carter Hall was the winged warrior known as Hawkman. He and his wife Shiera were reincarnated Ancient Egyptian royalty who learned the secret of the mysterious Nth Metal that allows their winged harnesses to defy gravity.
Tumblr media
Kent Nelson has a mystical bond with the Lord of Order known as Nabu, whose consciousness is channeled through his helmet. When Nelson wears the helmet, he becomes the sorcerer known as Dr. Fate]
Tumblr media
Back at Metropolis General, Clark and Chloe arrive to talk with Markent, however…
youtube
(Thanjs again to TheDoctorOfFate)
Later, Chloe checks in with Green Arrow, who reports a sighting of the Cosmic Rod from satellite imagery and has found it, along with Whitmore.
Tumblr media
…and she’s changed outfits.
[HISTORICAL NOTE: Whitmore became the Star Spangled Kid primarily to annoy her stepfather Pat Dugan (AKA Stripesy, Pemberton’s sidekick (yeah, a teen superhero had an adult sidekick) after Pemberton renamed himself Skyman. Following Skyman’s death, she acquired the Cosmic Rod, rechristening herself Stargirl]
Tumblr media
Green Arrow realizes Whitmore is making herself a target for whomever is attacking her friends. He drops down and starts asking her where Clark was taken when he’s bathed in a jet of ice as the killer reveals himself, and it’s not Markent.
Tumblr media
The killer and Whitmore (who has officially called herself Stargirl) have a staff battle with the Cosmic Rod and an ice rod the killer conjured. The two are at a stalemate (guess the killer’s new at this, since he couldn’t handle a rookie), so he sends ice spears flying at her!
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Green Arrow’s still in the neighborhood. However, Stargirl doesn’t seem pleased that Green Arrow saved her life, since someone promised her the first shot at Pemberton’s killer (You got your first shot; you blew it) Who is that someone? The same someone who snatches Green Arrow off the ground and unceremoniously dumps into the team’s HQ through the window:
Tumblr media
...Hawkman
However, Green Arrow manages to grab something off of Hawkman that hints that they’re holed up (and have Clark) at the Brownstone. He prepares to assault the brownstone, asking Chloe to call in the others.
With that, they call the desk of Detective John Jones (AKA J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter)
Meanwhile at Metropolis General, Markent has a visitor…
Tumblr media
So, the killer is Markent’s son
Tumblr media
…the second Icicle.
But what about Clark?
youtube
(Thanks to Granny Smith)
[Pictured but not mentioned elsewhere in the show: Hawkgirl, Hourman, Black Canary, and Mr. Terrific, and the Spectre. Nice to see them at least represented]
[NOTE: The above clip includes the beginning of part 2, which will be covered in Part 2 of this review]
As I mentioned at the start of this review, the JSA was active during World War II, so even the youngest members would have to be in their 80s. I peg the surviving original members as in their 40s (possibly 50s), which would put the JSA active in the late 70s, 40 years after their comic book counterparts.
Tumblr media
WHO is the Justice Society?
WHY is the Icicle just now getting his revenge?
WILL this finally get Clark into his Captain Underpants look (no, that will have to wait another season and a half. Sorry)
These questions and more will be answered in the exciting conclusion!

some context for my latest skit
I should explain the context of the skit I wrote for Annie/Atsuover's birthday, and why Sheridan sent her a card.
see, in the AU, Sheridan saw Annie as his daughter, despite her still having her parents. this also plays into a take of the Swap AU that exists.
I came up with my own take of the Swap AU with the Revival AU thrown in.
here's who swaps with who:
Annie swaps with Garcy
Sheridan with Lucks
Masa with Marco
Lamar with Sofia
Lucinia with Evelyn
Theo with Bo
you get the idea
as for the other characters,
Wren would swap with Winston (which would make the most sense)
Steven and Glitchy Red would both swap with Mike and Blue Tears (Mike would have a shiny Squirtle)
you get the idea
given this would be similar to the Revival AU, Annie would be adopted by Sheridan, fall in love with Belle (Tari's swap) befriend Desti (Axol's swap) in the afterlife (she died from Alcohol poisoning, and a failing liver) and met the SMG2 crew
Regarding Steven and Glitchy, Steven would be swapped with Mike, Mike went insane after losing his Blastoise Dewdrop in a failed trade, so he strangled Steven, becoming Strangled Blue, or "M!k3" as his inner madness. However, Dewdrop gets reincarnated as a shiny Squirtle for Mike, and he calls him Dewey. As for Glitchy, he swaps with Blue Tears, since Blue and Red are polar opposites.
since X and FM become Spudnick recolors in the Swap AU, Enzo becomes one as well, (Starman's not in the AU for very obvious reasons)
As for Wren, he and Winston swap, so Winston becomes a washed up Splatfest champion and Melony's idol, while Wren becomes the TV Adware, making a simulation for Winston. the Simulation in question would also be Pirate themed, (I remember seeing a picture of the Swap AU having a pirate themed simulation instead of a western theme, which I liked)
for the trio's, Annie becomes pals with both Otis (Swap!SMG0) and Desti, while Garcello befriends Niles and Orange (Swap!Meggy)
Annie and Desti are also a trio with Belle (this'll be shown in the Revival AU too, as the three are also close)
regarding the Meta Runner crew, Lucinia and Sofia are cousins in the swap!AU, and Sofia wants nothing to do with her spoiled cousin. As for Evelyn, she and Lamar are step siblings, both are close, as half the time, the two just had each other. As for their friendship with Annie, they plus Marco met her when she was real young, so they became her older siblings.
As for Annie and Sheridan's relationship, in both AU's, they got along well. In the Swap AU, she's his daughter, and Sheridan fully supports his daughter, both in her dreams, and her transition. Annie's gone by Annie since she was little, she barely remembers her birth name, (rather, her dead name) so Sheridan has always known her as Annie, and he loves her. In the main AU, the two get along well, in fact, Sheridan has Annie as his assistant when working in his lab. She's also hurt when the truth is revealed.
Some things do stay the same from the main series, such as Sheridan's love for coffee, Garcello smoking, and Annie drinking "The Liquid" however, she gains The Liquid after her revival, allowing her to become her Liquid form. Garcello's cigs aren't deadly, but can turn him into a ghost.
That's all I have right now guys, I made add on in the future.

They're remaking what?!?
According to IMDb, Shawn Levy (Arrival, Stranger Things, Night at the Museum, Deadpool 3) is producing and directing a remake of the 1984 scifi/adventure/romance Starman which John Carpenter directed. The film starred a very young Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. It's aged well.

I love this movie.
I love the TV series that followed it even more, warts and all. It wasn't perfect but it had heart. It's mostly been forgotten. 😢 Not by me, though. I've written a lot of fanfic for it. Gotta create the content no one else will.
Do not fuck this up, Levy and everyone else involved!
If anyone wants to watch the TV series, last I saw you can find all of it on YouTube. Message me if you want links.

This is HYSTERICAL. FWIW, I immediately thought the round blue thing in the top image was the silver sphere from the 1984 movie "Starman" and the TV series the followed it in 1986. Yes, I'm Gen X and a huge fangirl of that obscure movie/show. See my AO3 for proof.
I never thought the round blue thing was a condom.
I love D&D and RPGs in general but am unfamiliar with "A Spy in Insengard." It sounds fun.
I do have sex, thankyouverymuch. 😂

McPherson is best remembered for her role in the 1980s TV series Knight Rider as Bonnie Barstow, KITT's mechanic. She appeared in season one and was absent from season two. A-T-4 162 3 More Sleeps
1984 was a stellar year for horror franchises. Comedy horror classics Ghostbusters and Gremlins both began. Arnold Schwarzenegger punches the big screen in the Science Fiction horror The Terminator. The slasher Friday The 13th attempted to make part 4 Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter it's, well, final chapter but it would put out another six films in the series and have a reboot. Wes Craven has a busy year releasing, The Hills Have Eyes Pt. 2, Invitation To Hell, and introducing us to Freddie in the first episode of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Another Stephen King short Children Of The Corn is adapted and would go on to spawn eight sequels, a remake and a reboot
What was the master John Carpenter doing in 1984? He made Starman
This is a blog about music though and there was some great music made for horror movies that came out in 1984

Poster for Planet Prince: The Terrifying Spaceship, released on May 25, 1959. This was the second half of a two-part serial; the first half was released the previous week on May 19.
These two short features - Part One was 57 minutes long, Part Two was 64 minutes - were produced by Toei. They were adaptations of the Planet Prince television series from Senkosha, much like Toei had done with Senkosha's previous series Moonlight Mask (Gekko Kamen).
However, unlike the Moonlight Mask films, the Planet Prince films featured a hero not at all resembling his television counterpart.
The television Planet Prince was Senkosha's answer to Shin Toho's theatrical superhero Super Giant (aka Starman in the USA), with a similar costume and superpowers. Over 49 episodes his costume changed a bit, but he looked like this:

I think we can all agree, the two versions of Planet Prince look nothing alike. Well, except that they both have the same number of arms and legs and noses and whatnot.
In 1965 the two Toei Planet Prince films were edited together into an 85 minute-long TV movie for American television entitled Prince of Space. This is the version seen on Mystery Science Theatre 3000, and was released on DVD with the Sonny Chiba (as Iron Sharp/Space Chief) film Invasion of the Neptune Men (1961).
Anyhoo, in no way should Planet Prince/Prince of Space be confused with this guy:

This is Prince Planet, the hero of a 52-episode animated series that debuted in Japan in 1965. An English-dubbed version hit American airwaves the following year.
Prince Planet was, like Super Giant/Starman and Planet Prince, and alien endowed with incredible superpowers (Although most of his came from his pendant) who came to Earth to protect its inhabitants from various threats.
The series did not last more than a year, however, because of two reasons:
It was black-and-white when color TV was rapidly gaining popularity; kids had more colorful choices for their viewing pleasure.
Parent groups complained about violence in the series, especially when Prince Planet seemed to have no qualms about killing his enemies. I have not seen this series, but I really, really want to just for that reason alone.
Finally, in 2012 there was a theatrical reboot of Planet Prince, appropriately entitled Planet Prince 2021.
Tumblr media
I have not seen this film yet, though I did see the trailer a couple of years back and wasn't very impressed; it seemed the filmmakers were going for a goofy, "look how silly we can be" vibe, much like Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit (2008), the sequel/reboot of The X From Outer Space (1967).
I will seek out this film and view one of these days, though, if only because it features one of the last performances by the late Jirō Dan, who was Ultraman Jack's alter ego, Hideki Go, for decades.
Also, the costume looks kinda neat, in a low budget sorta way, although I'm not crazy about the sneakers.
