So it always frustrates me how everybody seems to misinterpret Kirk's "Let me help. A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over I love you."
Because Kirk (and the novelist) are not saying that "let me help" means the same thing as "I love you". He's saying that those three words are recommended over I love you. It ties in thematically with the episode, and honestly with Kirk's entire character arc throughout the show and the movies.
In this episode, Kirk must choose between his love for Edith (I love you) and his duty to serve (let me help), and just like the novelist he refers to, he chooses the latter over the former - this time to devastating results. And it's a choice he makes time and time again. "No beach to walk on" in order to serve his iron mistress. "No hand to hold" in order to serve on the Enterprise.
It's beautifully heartbreaking foreshadowing for the choice he must ultimately make at the end of this episode, as well as a beautiful thesis statement for his entire character arc

made me think of the parasites from that one Star Trek episode
Many entities located in a newly discovered area of the Far Plane. Entities form a body of water 2 around them that acts as both a vehicle and shield, allowing them to climb the walls of their environment. When they get to the ceiling, they fall back into the water 2 and start the cycle again.

In honor of me watching 2x01 with the iconic boob window shirt rip (taken from my notes), I’ve decided to reveal what I’ve been doing. I have been taking down each episode as I do a watch of TOS to see how many shirt rips actually happen out of curiosity. Here’s my season one statistics.
State of Star Trek Shirts - Season One TOS
Season Two’s Stats
1x01 - Perfectly intact but Kirk wears a slutty bed robe.
1x02 - Intact, but he is willingly shirtless for a scene.
1x03 - Kirk’s shirt gets torn at the end, shoulder and chest exposed.
1x04 - Somewhat willingly shirtless (and incredibly sweaty) Sulu! And Kirk shoulder rip, right at the end.
1x05 - Evil twin Kirk willingly shirtless.
1x06 - Everyone was intact!
1x07 - Unwillingly shirtless Kirk (technically unwillingly naked)
1x08 - Many shirt rips though nothing scandalous.
1x09 - Intact!
1x10 - Instantly shirtless and sweaty Kirk, opens with it. He fucking walks through the halls shirtless.
1x11 - No exposure.
1x12 - Double no exposure.
1x13 - Triple!
1x14 - Quadrouple! Shit’s getting boring.
1x15 - A Yeoman does get her uniform torn and has to hold up the top half for a while, and Kirk’s own shirt is torn all across the shoulder and chest, exposing titties. He gets all dirty and sweaty too, of course.
1x16 - Perfectly fine once again!
1x17 - Man, boring. Intact.
1x18 - Entirely fine despite a fight in the desert.
1x19 - Intact shirts. Sigh.
1x20 - Shoulder rip down the chest! Plus no undershirt so the silly cropped uniform keeps exposing him.
1x21 - Sigh, intact.
1x22 - Intact.
1x23 - Intact, ladies and gents.
1x24 - My stats are gonna be boring. Intact.
1x25 - I think people exaggerate. Intact.
1x26 - All good.
1x27 - Once again.
1x28 - Intact. Lame.
1x29 - He’s fine! So many shirts!
Keep in mind it’s possible I missed one here or there. Now, complied data.
Out of twenty-nine episodes in season one, only nine had a shirt rip or a shirtless Kirk. Now, that is a lot of shirt rips, but I am a little surprised at it.
That is ~31% of season one.
I wanted to make a pie chart and will continue with this as I watch the remaining two seasons. If I’m missing an episode, please let me know and I’ll fix my data. Do with this information what you will I guess, I just wanted to track stuff. XD

Jump through the time hole, but beware policemen and mechanical rice pickers, maman! McCoy's gone mad, but Kirk is madly in love with Edith Keeler -- too bad she has to die to save the future, maman. It's a real sad situation.

[tv review] tos 1x26-1x29 (1967)
1x26 “errand of mercy”
a landmark episode since it introduces the klingons, though the circumstances are somewhat underwhelming. still, kor is an incredible antagonist and it would’ve been nice to see him recur! his chemistry with kirk is sizzling even if you don’t decide to read anything into him asking if the enterprise’s captain has a tongue upon first meeting him.
though the klingons were treated largely as an allegorical parallel to the soviet union, we aren’t given any kind of coherent political ideology at any point in tos, and none of their later fleshing out in that regard will ever particularly resemble communism. their early portrayals are also uncomfortably racist, with many white actors in brown/red-face and given fake facial hair of the kind generally used for “evil asian” characters at the time.
although the episode as a whole is somewhat underwhelming, kor is such an effective antagonist that it still makes for a compelling watch even today. b-rank
1x27 “the alternative factor”
“what is the worst episode of any star trek series?” is not the kind of question you expect to have a definitive, obvious answer but if you think it isn’t “the alternative factor,” i’m going to assume it’s because you haven’t seen “the alternative factor.”
i always worry i’m overhyping how good the good episodes are and how bad the bad episodes are but i worry about that 0% with this one. this is the WORST one. d-rank
1x28 “the city on the edge of forever”
i know my ho-hum reaction to this episode is tantamount to sacrilege. it’s cited by many fans and critics as the best episode of tos, and i kinda get why that is, but it just ain’t it for me.
like, it’s a good episode. captain kirk nervously stumbling through an explanation of himself and spock to a police officer was cute and hilarious. “i see you’ve noticed the ears…” i just think a lot of people’s more enthusiastic reactions rely on kirk’s romance with edith keeler and the necessity of kirk allowing her to die to avoid supposedly allowing the nazis to win world war ii.
i mean, for the record, the nazis were not going to win world war ii, and the united states did not belatedly enter the war to stop that from happening. by the time the u.s. entered the war it was clear that the soviet union was going to singlehandedly defeat the nazis. the united states joined the war because they were terrified that communism would spread uncontrollably if they allowed the soviet union to liberate all of europe. this parallels their decision to commit the first (and, thankfully, so far only) acts of nuclear war against the people of japan to force a decisive surrender just before the ussr was going to enter the pacific theater.
the thing is, this isn’t even why the story falls flat for me. i can’t say i found their romance especially compelling anyway. even when i was more credulous about the surrounding context, i never really found edith to be kirk’s most compelling whirlwind romance of the week.
i’m not saying this is a bad episode. there’s plenty about it that i enjoy. i just think it’s one of the top, say, 15 or 20 or so best tos episodes rather than at or near the top of the list. b-rank
1x29 “operation: annihilate”
this is so silly and dumb, it’s one of those “either it clicks or it doesn’t” episodes, and for me it totally clicks. giant flying brain cells attacking a colony? hell yes. i’m here for it.
we even get some continuity/deep lore with kirk’s brother having been mentioned in previous episodes and finally appearing, albeit as a corpse. and there’s plenty of kirk/spock shipping fodder to be had. b-rank

I love the relationship between Kirk and Edith SO much. You can genuinely see why he falls in love with her - she's intelligent, resourceful, forward thinking, insightful, and can see right through him to the very heart of who he is. And you, as the viewer, fall in love with her right alongside him. She feels like exactly the kind of person the world needs. She's the kind of person who looks at the world around her, sees a need, and does everything in her power to provide the solution for that need. We need Edith Keeler, and so we fall in love with her as much as Kirk does.
But we can also see why Edith falls in love with Kirk. He speaks the same language that she does, he shares her same philosophy. Instead of laughing at, mocking, or deriding her for her ideals he shares them in a deeply intimate way. She doesn't know it, and never will, but he is literally the result of the fulfillment of her ideals. The people who come to eat at her Mission deride her for what she says. Kirk looks her in the eye, and completes her sentences because he believes in what she says too.

“’LET ME HELP.’ A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He’ll recommend those three words even over ’I LOVE YOU.’”
Star Trek, The City on the Edge of Forever (1x28) The lines above come from the very following episode (1x29).
Bryan Fuller worked for different Star Trek shows multiple times, I wouldn’t be surprised if he intended this as a tribute to Kirk and Spock… ?
The first one seems quite obvious since the original line is truly iconic, but the second is a way more subtle, as probably very few people payed attention to those lines and their potential double-meaning. It also might be a mere coincidence, but given Fuller’s reputation (his Star Trek background and his… affection towards Hannigram) I don’t really think so.
And what better than a tribute to the original space husbands™ through Hannibal and Will?
(edit: see also this)

Rating Star Trek TOS costumes because why not! (part 4)
This Side of Paradise (1x24). Even in post-scarcity utopian space communes, it seems we can't escape traditional gender roles (or date rape). Pretty boring but I am fond of the lavender/forest green color combo of Leila's outfit and the ubiquitous black boots that TOS loves so much. 5/10.
The Devil in the Dark (1x25). Maybe I'm playing it fast and loose with the term "costume" here but I couldn't leave her out! The Horta is the peak of TOS's arts-and-crafts practical effects - it's clearly just a repurposed old rug, like I'm not even sure they're trying to hide it. And she's an icon, the realest bitch there is, love her, 100/10
Errand of Mercy (1x26). They look like they're going to a renaissance fair but Kirk's doing the bare minimum because he's really just there to support his boyfriend. Love Spock's little cape and matching tights and tunic. 8/10 for him, 4/10 for Kirk (do better, Captain).
Remember when the Klingons were barely-disguised yellow peril caricatures? 😐 Not even the golden sash with the sloppy fringe can save this hot mess, 0/10.
The City on the Edge of Forever (1x28). Every time TOS puts Spock in a hat, I cheer and clap my hands. Kirk is also pulling his weight in that cute butch flannel, I am a fan of everything that is going on here, 9/10.
This outfit is not very accurate to the period but it is cute, fashionably monochromatic, and as far as I'm concerned Edith Keeler can do no wrong. 8/10.
Operation -- Annihilate! (1x29). I had a hard time getting a proper shot of this outfit because Aurelan spends most of her limited screentime freaking out about her dead family (seen on the left) but that patterned blouse/coveralls combo is pretty adorable and her hair looks so good! 7/10.

Star Trek TOS Spock Whump List
First Officer Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy.

1x2 Charlie X - both legs broken (very brief) then healed
1x4 The Naked Time - infected by alien virus, cries
1x16 The Galileo Seven - stranded on alien planet, crewmembers argue with him, sacrifices himself to help others escape (they don't let him) leg trapped by boulder, rescued, limping
1x29 Operation -- Annihilate! - infected by parasitic alien that attacks his nervous system, intense pain, fought twice, restrained, temporary blindness, worried friends
Season 2
2x1 Amok Time - extreme physical and emotional stress that will kill him in 8 days, fought, brief sadness
2x5 The Apple - poisoned, runs into force field, struck by lightening (second degree burns on back) pain
2x7 Catspaw - chained up in dungeon
2x10 Journey to Babel - difficult decision, gives blood, sedated, recovering in sick bay
2x19 A Private Little War - shot by primitive gun, helped to walk, unconscious, sick bay, worried friends, slapped in the face several times

2x21 Patterns of Force - whipped, bloody marks on back, handcuffed, imprisoned (TW: this episode has depictions of Nazis)
Season 3
3x1 Spock's Brain - brain is stolen, surgery to put it back in (yes, it's just as strange as it sounds)
