I see what do mean and I understand the redemption arc is important but I think there's a way to still have him be a dick and do shitty things without having him a would be a would be rapist even if just by implication. It's been a while since I've read the book but doesn't Lillian agree to marry Sebastian at some point and changes her mind? Just have her go through with it after a night with Westcliff. Again I don't really think it would change *that* much. And the Westcliff stuff....there are ways to do that scene without it being dubious consent. I feel like it would be a standard adaptation change. If the rest of the story and characters stuck to the essence of the books what would be more important to me. And tbh this is the type of change that something like Bridgerton could and should have done re Daphne and Simon. But again that's just me. Btw you don't come off as harsh this is just a agree to disagree.

It's been a while since I've read it too, but he actually explicitly asks her to marry him after finding out she's slept with Westcliff and offers to take any potential child as his own--and she turns him down, despite the risk of being an unwed mother hanging over her head (I mean, probably not heavily because if she was pregnant with Westcliff's baby, she was going to end up married to Westcliff one way or the other). Because she doesn't like the idea of passing off Westcliff's kid as someone else's, and pretty early on she also realizes that Sebastian is not it for her. She doesn't realize exactly how threatening he is until after he drugs and kidnaps her--but she knows she doesn't want to be with him. And I think she also logistically knows that there's no way marrying Westcliff's BFF is going to be.... an easy thing for her, just because Westcliff is already losing his shit at the mere thought of it.

I mean, Sebastian aside--there's just no way that you can write a Lillian who elopes with Sebastian willingly and then marries Westcliff right after... without completely ruining who she is. She is defiant and she is naive, but she's not *stupid* and she's not cruel. I think not only does Lillian know she and Sebastian wouldn't work--she also knows that it would be cruel to him (I mean, in her mind, as she doesn't know how shitty he is at that point) to marry him and pine after his best friend. She knows it would be cruel to Westcliff to marry his best friend--she's mad him, but she's also in love with him. You very literally don't elope with your lover's best friend if you love them, lol. Even if you're mad. And you especially don't do that if you're as set in who you are as Lillian Bowman. What would motivate Lillian to do that? She has all the money she needs, she isn't excited by a title (and hell, Westcliff has a better one than Sebastian anyway). Sure, she could be pregnant by Westcliff, but why marry some guy she doesn't love to give her baby a dad when the actual dad is right there and also would probably murder Sebastian before he let him raise his kid?

The only way St. Vincent gets there--talked to a Lillian stan friend of mine and I agree with her--without physically forcing Lillian is blackmail. And if Lillian is not going to this marriage willingly, and the marriage doesn't actually stick unless it's consummated (which I think, even if it's not explicitly stated, a lot of people know via cultural osmosis) the implication is that she is going to have forced or otherwise coercive sex with St. Vincent.

For me, I think there are just things that can be adapted and things that can't, and I'd rather these really important points stay as is than see an adaptation that compromises them. Like, I don't really need an adaptation. Probably, at least half the cast would disappoint me. Probably, I'd think it looked cheap lol. I'm really happy with where this series is in my head. I think there are series you could adapt with far fewer dramatic changes (Fifth Avenue Rebels has always been one for me, I also have lately thought The Scoundrels of St. James could be--I mean, that shit can get dark, but the heroes are never *that* dark themselves.). Most likely, The Wallflowers will never even be on the table for an adaptation--but if it was, I'd honestly be kind of afraid because I just don't want something that altered. I think you could, fwiw, have Westcliff and Lillian's first time be totally consensual, but I don't think the St. Vincent thing could be changed without proverbially shaving Lillian bald as a character, lol.

In the same sense, I don't think Bridgerton should have been adapted at all. To me, if you have to rip out such foundational bones of a story (good or bad) to adapt it, just.... adapt something else?

pretty much just echoing what other anons are saying about the absolute lack of nuance that armys have fostered where anyone who has a negative opinion about anything the members do is just an uncultured hater who wants the entire wrath of stan twitter to fall on x member.

while i do think black armies are absolutely correct about the virtue signaling and pearl clutching that white armies tend to do when it comes to sexual references in hip hop/rap outside of bts and agree that it is largely based in racist stereotypes. i think the “bora glasses” are causing them to miss the point of a lot of the uproar. its not about lyrics being sexual bc this (for the most part) did not happen with latto’s verse. in addition, a lot of them hate to admit they find this language attractive bc its the kind of stuff we have been socialized to expect from men since we are little girls. i am latina and grew up around reggaeton (heavily influenced by rap and hip hop) where a min. 80% of the music is extremely degrading and objectifying of women. even as a queer adult woman in her late 20s while i acknowledge this issue with the genre (and have heard much more explicit things) a lot of that music is extremely nostalgic to me. so i understand the cognitive dissonance but i cannot accept that from men i expect better from (not JH obviously lol).

and yes, i do think this is a bad look for JK even if he didn’t sing or write that part bc either he’s aware of the meaning and has no problem with it or is that oblivious to not even know what someone is saying on his own damn song. the fact that an alternate version even exists with this collab tells me that the check cleared before someone in a board room went “actually maybe not”.

despite my deep respect for BTS throughout the years, at the end of the day I will always acknowledge that they are men. they are not some sexless unicorns raised in a place with no misogyny or gender roles, they are men and like most other men they engage in behavior that often betrays the respect of most women whether consciously or subconsciously. we simply may not see it bc they are celebrities with pretty curated online personalities. now, that doesn’t mean i think they’re secretly chauvinistic pigs but despite my respect for them i always keep a degree of distance bc they *could* be.

i will add that the “bora glasses” are a hell of a drug. the double standards when it comes to the members vs other celebrities is insane (and i dont even like most celebrities lol). i know not a single one of these armies would think twice about talking shit about a song like this if it were from anyone else and that’s what really disappoints me about what our spaces have turned into.

I really appreciate your perspective on what the previous anon said , given your own personal experiences and culture. I'm obviously not the best person to speak on this subject.

I agree that the "bora glasses" are a real thing. It seems to me that even "normal" Armys are complaining a bit about the song, however, which is good. But I don't know that the solo version exists simply because Hybe foresaw the original would upset people. They likely wanted to recreate with 3D what they did for Seven - two versions counting as one, or at least another version to boost streams apart from the instrumental. Since it didn't make sense to have a clean and explicit versions again, and because maybe they knew some fans hadn't liked Latto's verses or Seven being a feature, they used the same strategy they applied to TXT's Back For More recently, and recorded a solo version.

I also agree that BTS are men, so, like all men, they're probably a lot more insensitive and ignorant to sexism than we imagine, and say or do a lot of things that would disappoint us (though I don't believe they're secretly chauvinistic pigs at all).

Thanks for this analysis-it definitely makes me feel better.

As someone who had a hella abusive parent (very much like Filbrick) who loved when she could brag about me or when my accomplishments made her look good... and at best ignored me when I wasn't The Best™️ (and usually threw in all kinds of abuse for good measure), Ford isn't chasing wealth.

He's chasing his father's genuine approval and affection.

He's been top of every list in just about every objective measure- but he has something that marks him as Different, something he cannot truly hide. Something that will always be mentioned in the same breath as all his accomplishments... and to a narcissistic parent who uses their kid's achievements for status? That means the kid will never be good enough, no matter how many awards they win.

When you're autistic, it's hard to read social cues and hard to make friends with neurotypicals, and it's canon that Ford has very few friends. This also means he doesn't have a lot of chances to hang out with other kids, and crucially, to watch other kids with their parents- to see how their parents treat them. He has no frame of reference to help him realize that the way he (and Stan, albeit in a different way) are treated by their father is not normal, or even acceptable.

He has no example to show him that having to earn love from your parents is Fucked Up Actually. He knows that he doesn't grasp social unwritten rules, and accepts that the way he is treated must just be the way it's supposed to be.

Getting into WCT on a full ride, with a world-renowned invention? Ford believes that maybe, THIS could be the thing that finally makes his father look at him with real approval, with actual love, and unconditional acceptance- despite his six fingers.

I know this, because it's the same exact reason that my autistic ass spent years getting straight A's, taking AP courses, scoring as high as I could, getting scholarships to college, double-majoring, double-minoring, and getting my graduate degree with merit from one of the top 150 schools on the planet before I was 25.

I thought those things would finally earn me love and acceptance. "Maybe this new/next achievement will be the magic thing that gets me love and acceptance."

And Ford follows Filbrick's "dream" for him because he thinks "this might be the thing that makes my dad actually love and accept me", even if he was only thinking it subconsciously.

Having that sort of treatment as a kid really screws with your head, and permanently rewires your brain. Ford was behaviorally conditioned to seek out recognition, because it was that recognition and external praise that made his father acknowledge him as a son... Even when he's an adult, conditioning is no joke, and compliance runs deep. (This is something Bill absolutely takes advantage of.) Breaking the patterns of abuse and fixing your own trauma is very hard... even more so without a trained therapist or psychiatrist to help you through the process.

I'm not surprised that Ford still struggles to deal with a lot of issues.

Incidentally... growing up with an abusive and narcissistic parent tends to prime people to become victims of partner/domestic abuse, and makes them more likely to not question horribly unbalanced power dynamics in romantic relationships... because that's what they're used to.

The way Filbrick treated Ford did a lot to prime him for Bill.

Bill gave Ford what Filbrick never did: attention. Bill told Ford he was special. He accepted him.

In more modern pop-cultural psychology terms, he "love bombed" Ford... and to someone who spent most of his life desperately seeking that affection and acceptance, it's a hell of a drug.

Bill did what people who are terrifyingly good at abuse and manipulation do: he figured out exactly what Ford wanted, and he gave it to him... and the minute Ford was addicted to it, he yanked the rug out from under him... because he knew his victim would do ANYTHING to get it back.

Ford is complicated. Is he a ✨ soft pure uwu smol bean ✨? No. But I like that about him, because I see so much of myself and my history in him. He feels so much more real, because real people are complicated, and dealing with and healing from abuse is not linear. It's a fucking roller coaster and sometimes abuse victims end up making bad choices. We have survival skills and some shitty coping mechanisms, we take two steps forward to take three steps back. We push people away because it's easier than the stress and anxiety of waiting for someone else to hurt us. We are often far from perfect, and healing isn't usually a pretty journey.

The fact that he gets to have a happy ending, to reconnect with people who meant so many deep things to him- friends, family, lifelong partners- and gets to live in a home he created, with people who love and support and accept him? Makes me feel like that ending is one I can have too.

I understand why Ford made the choices he did, especially as a 17yo with his back against a wall who only wanted to have his father love him. He's had enough people tell him he's not good enough- I'm not about to say he's not a good enough abuse victim.

I love Stan, but it's the other way around. Stan is the beloved one. Ford is the one everyone lambastes for *checks notes* being an autistic-coded abuse victim that has flaws.

You...you realize he was still mad at Stan because of the betrayal aspect, right? Not because of WCT? (Also I'm pretty sure he knew it existed). Stan was like. The one person Ford thought he could count on. Then Stan betrayed him. It turned out that he DIDN'T love him unconditionally like he thought. (No, Stan didn't ACTUALLY betray Ford, and Ford is WRONG about the idea that Stan doesn't love him but Ford has no way of knowing that).

Ford haters learn media literacy challenge.

We have now reached the ableism that Ford haters tend to spew--that is, demonizing him for his neurodivergent traits. Ford isn't emotionally intelligent and has low empathy, so clearly that means he prioritizes work over family and doesn't care about Stan or the twins (objectively untrue).

Yes, clearly the guy who stopped working immediately to play a game with his great nephew prioritizes work over family.

Then that last bit--more gross victim blaming.

this is long but if this is how the fandom behaves during a small controversy, i don't wanna be here to see the day joe does something that pisses people off for real. and it's going to happen because he's human but all this fame thrown onto him will begin to rot his image a little bit. i like one of the most controversial person out there: courtney love. she's accused of horrible things daily and she has had her share of controversy and brought public humiliation onto herself when she was on drugs. but she's an amazing musician and she's brilliant. she also stands for very noble causes and calls out hypocrisy. she was recently calling out the rock and roll hall of fame for their sexist behavior towards female musicians. the reason i'm saying this is because my tolerance for controversy is pretty high. i know the artists i look up to are flawed and they will make mistakes. putting this pressure on joe to be perfect and ideal, to be the greatest man on earth is only going to hurt him and push him away from you and by you i mean his fans. i'm gonna be honest, since i began following joe's career and all, i do believe his this amazing man, very kind, very brave, very talented. but he does have a small vibe to him, that naughty kind of vibe. like he acts impulsively and then has to deal with the consequences. that's NOT a bad thing but it's something that will get him into trouble one day or another. i think some of his fans need to work on getting a thicker skin or stop stanning him so much this won't be the first time he's involved in a controversy. he's only starting. sure he had amazing works before st but let's be real, st turned his career around. he's not joseph quinn, he's THE joseph quinn, the actor who portrayed eddie, the beloved metalhead who sacrificed himself in the end. i get the impression sometimes that because of rpf fics and stuff, some fans have a very idealized version of joe in their heads and when they see the real thing or see something that shatters this version, they spiral. i'm not saying they're wrong about being mad at this charity. i'm really not. i'm just saying that it's that time. joe made a mistake. did he know? probably not. but i don't see him addressing it. he doesn't use social media, he does seem to truly hate it. do i think he sometimes browses his insta? yes, all the time. but he doesn't post, he carries a camera around and takes a lot of pictures and he's never posted them. at least not on his insta. so i don't think he'll say something. it took a year and a con and a very silly girl to corner joe so he would address the verbal abuse grace has suffered. that question was out of place but that's what it took him. he never decided to make a post about it, he never even implied he knew about it. i hope i'm very wrong but the only way i see him addressing this is if a fan asks him about it. it's just a choice. like, if he had no insta we wouldn't even get the crumbs we get and there'd be no way to even tag him on important posts. so he chooses to be silent. don't think it's a bad thing, i have a tendency to let the dust settle before i decide to dust it again. but yeah, guys, thicker skin. he's gonna mess up even more because he's human and he's flawed and he's in a business that showcases all of his mistakes and we live in a cancel culture. we know exactly where he stands. there's a video of him screaming 'fuck donald trump' during a protest, there are pictures of him celebrating the fact gay people could finally get married...he's good. you gotta know this and stand your ground, if you can't do that, then having a celebrity as an idol is a big mistake.

I am extremely EXTREMELY pissed off. There is a reason I've only started to listen to kpop casually now. All except for maybe ATEEZ and mx/wonho.... Maybe stray kids too. Fucking hell being a kpop stan is exhausting. Watching fans tear each other apart, tear other groups apart, tear THEIR OWN GROUPS apart..... And honestly, though I know it's not ALL koreans, but AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of them are so blinded by herd mentality that they don't realize that they are starting to throw a bad light on their society.

When you prioritize punsihing people for smoking weed, having prescription medication from other countries, or being in a RELATIONSHIP over the rampant alcoholism that is their drinking culture, the HORRENDOUSLY LAX LAWS regarding rape, CHILD rape AND CHILD pornography, AND non-consensual filming WOMEN during sex......?????????

And the fact that ONLY A FEW of them seem to understand when the media releases these weed and relationship "scandals" that ALMOST 99% OF THE TIME they're trying to distract from something bigger going on??? And that because of their herd mentality, it WORKS???

With Wonho it was the MNet rigging scandal, the 97 line with the club thing was the Nth Room trials, and now with BoA and Ilhoon???? Weren't there JUST EXTREMELY HEAVY criticism for media award shows about 1) how they're still going on despite the rise in cases, and 2) how MAMA especially treated the idols by making them wait out in their cars in freezing temperatures while the actors presenting the awards got private rooms and catered food for them? Or how about the condemnation of that asshat who raped that little girl to the point that she's now in a wheelchair is BACK IN THE SAME CITY that she lived in instead of STILL being under lock and key??? I even heard there was a bribery case regarding the president's son??????????

And now that this is released, the GP has shifted focus from allllllll of that to BoA and Ilhoon. Poof. Like smoke in the wind.

Look the US is in NO WAY better with half the shit we've got going on here, but at LEAST the majority of us know not to trust half the shit that comes from ANY media's mouth, REGARDLESS of which political party you're in. We also know to MIND OUR OWN FUCKING BUISNESS when it comes to celebrities, and we show them compassion when they seek help for their issues. We're not roses and sunshine, but at least the good majority of us know when the hood is trying to be put over our eyes and mercilessly taunt and ridicule those that fall for the kool aid.

Top 10 Most Underrated K-pop Songs of 2020 (Idol Edition)

2020 was shit. But oh boy, at least the music was good.

And it took us a good while to decide on these lists.

Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2019 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high but deserves your attention!

Like last year we have a separate post for Top 10 underrated non-idol tracks in 2020 and a list for the Top 10 K-Dramas in 2020 in our opinion, which will drop in the coming days.

Some of the artists have escaped the list in recent years to stardom (like N.FLYING, SF9 and OH MY GIRL), so hopefully, it happens again!

This is in alphabetic order NOT in the order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome. Also, all MVs are linked in the song titles because Tumblr won’t let me share that many videos in one post.

APRIL “LALALILALA”

APRIL is a very well-rounded girl group but their talents have been squandered by DSP’s mismanagement in recent years. With DSP seeming to try again and with member Naeun’s meteoric rise thanks to acting in webdrama hit “A-TEEN” and the internationally loved K-Drama “Extraordinary You”, “LALALILALA” seemed like the song to finally give APRIL the awards they deserve. Except it did not, which is an absolute shame because “LALALILALA” is easily one of the strongest girl group tracks this year. The futuristic synths and snappy drum instrumental made for a delightful pop track and reminded us of DSP’s heydays of churning out similarly pristine and impactful tracks for KARA and Rainbow. If you were a fan of past DSP girl group bops like KARA’s “Pandora” and "STEP”, this is the song for you!

Cherry Bullet “Hands Up”

Whoever thought of putting “Beethoven” and “girl crush concept” together should get a raise at FNC Entertainment because it worked. Sampling Beethoven’s famous piece “Für Elise” in different parts of the instrumental using different instruments ranging from synths to different keyboards, the producer was able to provide rookie girl group Cherry Bullet with a hip-hop heavy girl crush banger that is catchy and fun. Also, it is clear the girls of Cherry Bullet really enjoy this song, exuding confidence and charm in the choreography and overall performance. After a few listens, you would be nodding to this addictive song and body rolling to the chorus. If you are a fan of girl crush songs, you have to listen to “Hands Up!”

Cignature “ASSA”

Honestly, we are annoyed with C9 Entertainment scrapping the highly talented girl group Good Day after merely one song and their relatively strong run on KBS’ “The UNIT” and re-debuting only some of the girls in Cignature under their sub-label J9. However, we cannot deny that “ASSA” is a powerful track. It is many things at the same time - it covered the quirky girl group demographic with the cute and somewhat bratty sounding introduction where the girls seem to be talking and singing at the same time, then a somewhat mature buildup came out of nowhere with a more raspy and charismatic delivery on the vocals front before an aggressively girl crush drop begins the chorus carried by the members feeling themselves (specifically their hair) with attitude. If you love the quirky sound of fromis_9 and Oh My Girl but also want some OG girl crush energy like 4MINUTE, “ASSA” is your song!

CSVC “No Mercy”

Okay, CSVC is not really an “idol” group in the traditional sense. A project group made up of 4 indie artists (CHEEZE's Dalchong, Stella Jang, Lovey and Park Moonchi), CSVC tries to recreate the 90s girl group sound of legends like S.E.S, Fink.L and Baby VOX and we are here for it. Not only do all four members have the pipes to carry the early K-Pop sound that has heavy RnB influences, they went all out in the song production with the retro reverbs littered throughout the track and new jack-swing inspired intro. The MV was also a love letter to 90s K-Pop girl groups with the intense use of flares, extreme use of lighting, the “futuristic” sets seemingly made of tin-foil and the members all donning all black or all white outfits. If you are a huge fan of 90s K-Pop, CSVC’s “No Mercy” is the song for you!

ELRIS “JACKPOT”

Honestly, we have no idea what the hell HUNUS Entertainment is doing with ELRIS but even with the mismanagement, they continuously give ELRIS great songs and “JACKPOT” is easily one of the best girl group songs of the year. It builds up from silky vocals to strong rap, which is followed by wonderful harmonisation before we dive into a two-part chorus which made use of the members’ strong vocals as well as gave us catchy moments to sing along to. The music video is also a delight, with the girls dancing on a stage built to look like a roulette. The addition of the 2 members also made ELRIS’ already powerful stages even more impactful. We have been hearing rumours of disbandment but we hope it is not true. If you want to listen to the definition of a well-rounded and fun K-pop girl group track, ELRIS’ “JACKPOT” is THAT SONG!

IMFACT “Lie”

IMFACT is truly a strong boy band with great vocals and strong song production skills of their own yet they CONTINUE to be SLEPT on. I mean being managed by Star Empire Entertainment does not help but it is ridiculous how little domestic and international support they have. They have a distinct sound which they continue in “Lie” - electropop infused with K-Pop song structures and a generous use of unique drums patterns. If you love electropop and K-Pop, it is time to stan IMFACT and check out this amazing song!

NATURE “Girls”

Maybe n.CH Entertainment go a boost in Mnet money after taking on the job to manage TOO after Mnet’s “To Be World Klass” show because their budget really went up and it shows in NATURE’s “Girls”. This song is truly a masterpiece. The chorus is like what you would expect of a club banger EDM track but the verses are made up of clean vocals exhibiting anguish and longing over a relatively simple beat and the bridge was orchestral instrumentals mixed with the drumming of a marching band and the loud chants of the girls. The music video is also simple yet haunting. If you like the darker tracks of 9MUSES and RAINBOW like “Sleepless Night” and “Black Swan” but also the electronic sound of Berry Good in “Don’t Believe” days, this is the song for you for you!

ONEWE “End of Spring”

We need more bands making it in mainstream K-Pop and ONEWE’s “End of Spring” gives us another reason why we think so. “End of Spring” is a breath of fresh air in this year of mainly 80s retro dance tracks and hip-hop heavy pop songs in the K-Pop world, as it instead went for a pop rock sound more reminiscent of American pop rock acts like Train in “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” and One Republic in “Counting Stars” but with a dose of the energy in a teen summer party. If you enjoy a fun pop rock song, ONEWE’s “End of Spring” is the song for you!

OnlyOneOf “dOra maar”

OnlyOneOf is a rookie group with a lot of potential given their heavily alternative RnB and overall escape room-esque sound. They had many great songs in 2020 with wonderful music videos but our favourite here at K-Pop Timeout has to be the MV-less “dOra maar”. This laid back and smooth song showcases each member’s unique vocals and sounds more like a top Korean RnB artist experimental collaboration than a K-Pop boy band song. Also, it is always fun to see K-Pop artists take inspiration from art and culture of different countries (the titular Dora Maar is a French photographer and the lover of Pablo Picasso). If you are mostly a Korean RnB fan, OnlyOneOf’s “dORa maar” might be your gateway drug into the idol scene!

Weki Meki “COOL”

Fantagio seems to be a bit unsure about which sound to give Weki Meki, as the group swings between aggressive and catchy girl crush songs to more generic cute summer songs like a pendulum. They should really consider keeping Weki Meki with the sound they found in “COOL” because the girls really carried this supermodel runway power walk song with poise and confidence. While we have seen boy bands dabble in the runway model sound such as IN2IT in “Snapshot”, SF9 in “Now or Never” and KNK in “Sunset”, we have actually rarely seen girl groups going for this expensive sound. Additionally, the music video for this song is powerful, with the scene of the girls facing each other and vogueing in a long dark room being highly memorable. If you love power girl crushes or any of these boy band songs we have mentioned above, you would really like this song!

There were many strong debuts this year and I would like to mention 2 underrated rookie groups to look out for in 2021!

Male - E’LAST “Tears of Chaos”

While more and more male groups are debuting with either badass or cute images, E’LAST decided to enter the K-Pop world with a highly orchestral sound. And the boys have the talent and visuals to carry such a dramatic and theatrical concept. Their label E Entertainment, also seems to have every intent to do the most for these boys, as seen in the production quality of their MVs. With these boys already dropping new material right now, you all should keep an eye on them!

FEMALE - woo!ah! “Bad Girl”

With many strong female group debuts this year, you may have missed woo!ah!, from the small label of NV Entertainment. This small company in fact is led by SM China’s former CEO and this person certainly has an eye for talent because woo!ah! is a very balanced 5 member girl group that has a lot of potential to make it big. In fact, the group is beginning to develop an international following, with “Bad Girl” reaching #1 in the Vietnam's biggest music platform, edging out both aespa’s “Black Mamba” and BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls”. They have already followed up with B-Side track promotions so check out these underrated rookies!

Rob Zombie; "Why it's time to step outside the confinements of his own box."

For close to four decades,

Rob Zombie has brought nonstop psychedelic grooves and a rockstar presence while gracing his own music and the silver screen with gut-churning, drug-tripping visuals. He not only commands quite the presence in films (whether his own successes or others’), but also makes appearances within many other horror soundtracks. There’s no denying that Zombie is a bloodied savant who has stayed incredibly consistent.

Let’s take a dive into his music before getting into his film library. From 1985-1997, White Zombie released six albums (between studio and compilations). La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One didn’t break into the Billboard 200 chart until a year after its 1992 release. Shortly thereafter, it became the hot and groovy bong success of the band, going on to sell two million copies. Astro Creep 2000, their final and fourth studio release, was their first and only album to chart within the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 in 1995. Up to this day in 2020, “White Zombie” has been featured in 47 TV, film, and video game soundtracks, from Beavis & Butthead to Pen15 to Bride Of Chucky (which includes a personal favorite moment of mine), amongst many others.

After the disbandment and separation, Zombie continued on his solo journey. He has gone on to release six studio albums, with a seventh on the way in March 2021, titled The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy. A multitude of hits—eight to be exact—sat within the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 records.

Zombie’s extensive film career is a “Super Beast” on its own.

He has been very vocal about gaining inspiration from 1920s-1980s horror culture. In many interviews, he’s cited Stan Lee, Bella Lugosi, Alice Cooper, and Steven Speilberg as being responsible for molding the brain that we know today.

Some of his influences include:

George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978)

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

The Shining (1980)

Zombie’s upbringing in the carnival industry alongside his family is another key influence.

In 2000, Rob made his directorial and (very memorable) screen debut with House Of 1000 Corpses.

It took three years to be released because of quarrels with major production companies regarding the film’s majorly aggressive themes of torture, blood, violence, sex—not to mention his arrogance with MGM, fighting to get rights back from Universal. Eventually, Lionsgate bit the bullet, albeit with the major stipulation of having Rob edit it down much further so House could pass with a “tame” R rating.

In 2005 and 2019, the franchise’s next two installments—Devil’s Rejects and 3 From Hell—were released. The franchise is heavily influenced by the shocking, sickening, and unforgettable ’70s classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It follows a family of psychotic, sadistic, and bloodthirsty (if I’m being honest) necrophiliacs. They kidnap, kill, torture and brutalize anyone who gets in their way. At the end of Devil’s Rejects, they somehow manage to survive a police shootout, escape prison, and waltz on into Mexico (as seen in the franchise finale 3 from Hell).

Look, it’s all complicated.

Look, this is a remake that you either adore or hate with a burning passion. If you’re a horror fanatic, you know what’s up with the original.

I personally adore Zombie’s take. The fact alone that he gave us an entire background story as to why Michael became the psychotic slasher that we’ve come to know and love. Plus, with an increased suspense and gore factor? Worked incredibly well and did justice (in my opinion).

The film made me feel bad for Michael, with moments of child Myers in therapy, particularly his love for making masks to pass the time while he was locked up and the touching family moments between him and his mother Deborah (Sheri Moon).

Add in the supporting cast of Michael McDowell (Loomis), Brad Douriff (Sheriff Leigh), Scout Taylor-Compton (Laurie Strode), etc., and I honestly think that it came together very well as a remake.

The films rated relatively low, but they did gross higher than the budgets that they originally had to film on. Again, I’m not going to give much attention to the higher-ups of critical perception—it all comes down to personal taste.

“Lords of Salem” (2013)

A film that’s centered within Salem, Massachusetts,

this film—you guessed it—tackles witches, occultism, possession, Satan, and all the usual topics. Heidi (Sherri Moon) is a radio DJ who gets sent a mysterious record that’s labeled as being from “The Lords.” From then on out, shit gets a little dicey and admittedly, very disjointed. You can’t fault the cast here, and I loved the visuals that they were going for. However, with set schedule conflicts and multiple rewrites, which led to essentially running out of time to film? As a whole, what looked great on paper just couldn’t be done justice.

My FAVORITE sequence within the film (SPOILERS):

I can forgive the disjointedness solely because of how mind-boggling and brilliant the film’s history and proper visuals were. Also, we got to see Dee Wallace, Judy Geeson, and Patricia Quinn as creepy and badass witches who moonlight as Heidi’s landlords. Also Meg Foster who leads their coven? Can we talk about what a femme-fueled power cast that is?!

Like I said prior, the film gets a little wild. If you’re...well, buzzed prior to watching, it may make a little more sense.

“31” (2016)

[Synopsis from IMDB; “Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, hellish compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.”]

Here, we clearly see that Zombie is invoking his childhood growing up within carnivals. In a 2013 interview with LA Weekly, Zombie divulged more about it:

“When we were kids, my parents would [work at the carnivals], and me and my brother would get dragged along to these things all the time and have to work.”

He went further on to say;

“Yeah, and it's not the nicest world. As a kid, you get exposed to the crazier underworld of the carnival. Me and my brother, when we were very little, we'd be inside the haunted house playing all day. So, already, what people are paying money to be scared [of], we're just playing in because it's fun. We saw the inner workings behind the machines.”

Set in 1976, Zombie stays true to his nods. Again, depending on taste, this is a huge hit or a wild miss with mindless homicidal violence, campiness, and climbs across the monkey bar of standards that we’re used to seeing from him.

So at this point, you’re probably wondering why I think that it’s time for Rob Zombie to step out of the confinements of his own box...

It’s no secret that Zombie sticks to only a small group of tropes:

Slashers, families or groups of homicidals that lack remorse, the occult, etc. There’s no shame in sticking to what you know. Hell, Zombie has seemingly cracked the code over the past two decades that he’s been in the film industry that so many directors still don’t seem to get.

IMO, despite whatever you personally feel about the films mentioned above- I feel like we’re living a freaky groundhog day repeat within Zombie’s filmography.

Now, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? Look, I’m not saying that Zombie has to change anything. However, I would love to see him tackle some other nuances that we’ve already seen from him in small doses.

- Children: We haven’t seen Zombie exactly take on what horror films depict kids as. Sure, he made a breakout and impeccable choice with young Michael Myers (Daeg Faerch) back in 2007. I personally would adore to see a reimagined (NOT remade) Children of the Corn on acid, one we all know Zombie can tackle and turn every existing view on its head.

- Witchcraft, The Occult, Satan, Voodoo: Zombie genuinely had a phenomenal concept (on paper) for 2012’s Lords of Salem. It was unfortunate that they ran out of resources and ran into unfortunate circumstances on set while filming.

The film wasn’t a total tank, though, given how inspiring and insane all the visuals were throughout the 1 hr, 41min film. I am absolutely positive that, given a full-force opportunity, Rob could rectify the mess that was out of his control. We completely saw that he provided visuals that left quite the impression, and he could take those taboo subjects by the goat horns.

- Animals (not the human form): It’s no secret that Rob and his wife Sherri are ethical vegetarians. It would be so tongue and cheek to see them take on such topics as animals getting their revenge, or even vegetarians torturing carnivores. This twist on the formula would make for an interesting viewing.

2.) In regard to time periods,

Zombie stays within—and pays homage to—the 1970s and 1980s quite a bit. Obviously, those are the eras that Zombie personally loves the most when it comes to filmmaking. However, it would be very interesting to see him take on current day settings.

Zombie has such a unique viewpoint. Given changing climates in politics, human decline/growth, the economy, etc., he would do work that could easily put Ryan Murphy to shame.

3.) He could also do with some different casting every now and then.

Let me preface this by saying that I adore every repeat casting choice that Zombie has made for his films.

Of course chemistry is a huge thing, and sticking to his friends is a very smart choice. However, he also has the potential to make new stars, boosting the power of those that may be under the radar. He can support those new stars with cameos from classic actors that we haven’t seen in awhile. I can’t begin to even fictionally cast those who fit the bill, but I do believe that with the “Zombie Touch,” he can bring so much more fresh air to the usual casting.

There’s no doubting what Rob Zombie is clearly very good at. Despite mixed reviews from the horror world and critics, it’s time that his fans open their eyes to new possibilities. Of course, there are die-hards, but digging your feet in further doesn’t allow the growth of horror and its ever evolving themes.

This theory has been on my mind for a very long time—since 3 from Hell came out. I’m sure, in his usual fashion, we won’t be seeing any new films from Rob anytime soon (what with his new album set to release in March 2021, not to mention the toll that the pandemic has had on Hollywood.)

Still, it never hurts to challenge the set standards and ways.

loona truly has songs for everyone though. me and an irl are the hugest loona stans and curiosity is literally the only overlap in our respective top tens like,,,that’s how you know a discography is diverse, and more importantly, good as hell.

eclipse and butterfly (and girl front to some extent), two (three) of their other top tier songs, seem to be the biggest gateway drugs to becoming an orbit lol.

i feel like orbits make stanning loona out to be more difficult than it actually is...like i really enjoy the lore and find it fun but all of the complicated stuff is pretty much just fan theories and you can enjoy them thoroughly without it. that being said, i think if someone is new and invested in stanning loona, watching the solo mvs in order is really worth it...what i wouldn’t give to experience all of them like that for the first time again :’)

checking out the three subunits it also important for orbit culture imo,,,1/3, odd eye circle, and yyxy are so musically rich and diverse i think it’s really fun to see their progression, plus it helps to understand group dynamics!

why you should stan:

the girls themselves. somehow the members of loona only give off the polished idol aura onstage. offstage, they basically seem like your neighborhood pals, burning chicken nuggets, drawing ugly pictures of each other and cheating at board games. they’re all very casual sort of people, and you can tell that their friendship is genuine.

beyond their personalities, their music...like i said, they’ve pulled off so many concepts it’s just so cool to see where they go next. idk if any other orbits get this feeling but when i see loona, even if i don’t like something that they put out, i still feel like they’re on the cusp of something great. i love my underrated flop* groups but loona is definitely not one of them. it honestly feels like current orbits have arrived early to the party, and now we’re just waiting anxiously for the other shoe to drop. i’m legitimately excited and happy to see where the future takes them.

i don’t want to go into detail about the lore because it’s kinda a lot, even though they reeled it in a bit for their last two comebacks but lemme just say. if lore with an actual point and story to tell rather than some vague artsy bullshit is something you’re into, you’ll like them a lot.

watch loonatv! it’s not essential to watch *all* of it, but you meet the girls one by one which eliminates confusion about names, personalities, subunits, and stuff. they also are doing a new series called loona logs, which are just vlogs filmed and edited by the members! i really like them, as they’re more substantial than other content and allow the members to just be themselves :)
